It's that time of year, everybody
Welcome to the 2023 Midsomer Murders Fic Exchange! If you're new, take a look at the FAQs and don't hesitate to get in touch if you have questions! I may be out of range for a few days (hence the long sign-up time) but I will be back to you as soon as I can!
Sign-ups are open and will remain open until the 25th August. Requests will be distributed on August 26th and final works are due on 21st December.
Remember to read the guidelines and don't offer to write anything you're not comfortable with as you may be paired with someone wanting something similar (eg. don't offer to write 'E' rated fics if you're not comfortable with 'E' rated fics, etc.)
Hope to see you guys there! We've had a lot of amazing stories in the past and I can't wait to add some more to the fandom

Event Guidelines
A Body in Midsomer
This is an event for casefics, narrative fanworks which mirror the structure of the source material (defined by Fanlore here). In the case of Midsomer Murders, these are works based around the solving of a crime. For this event, basic plots will be from the Midsomer Plot Bot on twitter. Fanworks will be posted to AO3 throughout August.
How to play:
Choose a plot!
The plots of your fanworks must be based on an outline from the Midsomer Plot Bot on twitter. You may edit these outlines as you see fit, in particular for sense and cohesion, though in the spirit of the fest, please stay as close to the original outline as you can. If you do not use twitter, the bot also has an online generator here. Additionally the bot’s feed is mirrored within the event discord, and we will provide a selection of summaries via tumblr asks on request.
To sign up, fill out this google form with your handle, preferred posting date and chosen summary. Consult the schedule here (or on the end of this post on mobile) to determine whether anyone else is using your preferred date or summary (more than one participant may post on the same day or use the same summary, but the schedule is intended to enable those who would prefer not to to avoid it).
Sign-ups will remain open until posting starts on August 1st.
Please consider sharing our promotional posts with anyone you think might be interested!
Create your fanwork!
The fest is designed primarily for fanworks which can convey storylines, such as fanfics, podfics or comics, but creators of other fanworks who are interested in doing so are welcome to discuss alternate methods of participation such as one-off or companion pieces. We do not accept AI-generated or AI-assisted works.
You may feature any canon or non-canon characters in any combination, so long as they are solving a murder. You may include whatever B-plots and secondary genres you like, and you may choose how seriously you take your premise. Your rating and content is also up to you, though please remember to tag completed works clearly.
There is no minimum length for fanworks, though ideally they should contain an investigation in its entirety: beginning with a murder, the discovery of a body, or the arrival of the detectives, and concluding with its solution. This can naturally result in longer pieces.
You may contact a mod (or re-fill the google form) at any time to change your summary or posting date.
Post!
Fanworks should be posted on your chosen posting day to the event’s AO3 collection. If you do not have an AO3 account, please either request an invite via AO3, which may take some time to come through, or request an invite code from the mods.
If you are posting art or audio files, please refer to the linked embedding guidelines for help if required.
You may format your fanworks as oneshots or multichapters, as is your preference.
When posting, please provide link credit to the plot generator - this should either be to the website or to the specific prompt you used on twitter. Please also include the text of the summary in an author’s note, if you would prefer not to use it as the fic’s summary.
In our pilot year, we are not requiring fanworks be posted in full during our posting period - if you would prefer to publish as a WIP, that’s fine. Depending on the completion rate of fanworks going forward, this may be revised if the event continues in future. If choosing to post a WIP, we recommend that you use the duration of the event to create a full first draft, and do as much editing as possible, so that you might be able to maintain a regular update schedule.
We also encourage you to post on tumblr (links to AO3 or the full fanwork, medium-dependent). When doing so, please use the hashtag #a body in midsomer, or @smallcoppers in the body of the post, so that we can find your work to share!
If you miss your chosen posting date, please re-fill the form or contact a mod to select a new one.
Once the event is complete, we will be sharing a masterlist of all posted works.
Dropping out
This fest, and all events we run, are intended as challenges for fun and profit (the profit is having made fanworks). You may drop out at any time, for any reason, without judgement or consequence. Please participate in fanworks events for fun, and not at its expense.
To drop out, please contact a mod via discord, tumblr or the original form, so that we can remove your slot from our schedule.
If your posting date comes and goes and you neither post nor contact a mod, you will be assumed to have dropped out.

Discord
We also run an entirely optional creators discord.
While our events are open to those of all ages, the discord is only for those aged 18+.
This server is not mandatory for participants. Joining the discord does not oblige you to participate in our events, and nor are you expected to leave on dropping out or on the completion of any given event.
The server is intended as a space where Midsomer Murders fancreators can engage with and support one another, compare odd and murderous web searches, give and receive feedback, etc.
The server has additional, separate rules beyond those of the fest, which users are expected to follow.
Join the server here.
