GYST Day (Update 4/7/18)
A guide inspired by YouTuber Kalyn Nicholson on getting your shit together (or at least feeling like it). It’s broken up into a few categories: cleaning, planning, food and self care.
Cleaning
The first part of GYSTing (at least for me) is cleaning. I like to start off with cleaning because cleaning alone can make a huge dent in feeling like you’ve got life together (more or less) because when your spaces become less cluttered and organised so does your mind. Here’s what I do:
I like to start by cleaning up my spaces. Since I live at home, I’ll deep clean my bedroom and any other area in the house that I’m typically located on a regular basis.
Next, I’ll take some time to organise my closet, bags, desk etc.
Change my bedding- ideally, you should change it every week but I don’t do the household shopping so I change my sheets once a month and wash my pillow cases every week.
On the subject of laundry, I’ll sort the clothes and wash and dry them. Along with that, I’ll hand wash any delicate clothes and hang them up using the shower rail in the bathroom.
Planning
After cleaning (sometimes before) is when I do some planning. I’ll gather my pretty pens, planners, bullet journals, calendars, and whatever else I need to organise any upcoming events before I sit down and get started.
I normally start off with my calender’s, bullet journal, and planner. I fill out whichever one (or all three) with any upcoming events or events that passed but weren’t written down.
Next, I’ll make a to-do list of task I need to and want to complete during the upcoming week/month
I’ll also try to review any goals I have and edit them if necessary to see how close I am to reaching my goals and what steps I need to take to reach them.
Manage my expenses. I don’t have a lot of expenses but if I have any receipts sitting around I’ll go through them and add what I purchased to my expense tracker in my bullet journal. Not only does it help me assess where my money is going, but when I need to buy something again I can go through my expense tracker and get an idea of how much money I’ll be spending.
Food
In my house, my mum and I try to create a menu for dinner for the following month. It can be a lot of work, varying from a few hours to a few days to create but it simplifies life. It eliminates the question of ‘what’s for dinner?’ and it makes grocery shopping WAY easier. Just pull up the recipe, write down the ingredients and you’re good to go.
I also like to create a menu for the upcoming week so I know what I’m eating for breakfast, lunch, and snacks.
Next, I’ll take inventory of canned goods, fruits, vegetables etc and then write my grocery list for that upcoming week.
Also what I’ve been pretty into recently is meal prepping. When I go grocery shopping I’ll buy some snacks and fresh fruits/vegetables and on Sunday’s I’ll take about an hour or so to portion them out and prep them so I can just grab one and go when I’m ready.
Self Care
Last but not least, I try to finish up my GYST day with some self care… think of it as a watered down version of a spa day. Once the above tasks are finished I try to catch up on any self care rituals I’ve been wanting to do but haven’t found the time for. It can include but isn’t limited to:
Exfoliating my body, lips and face
Shaving
Whitening my teeth (I use one from the dollar store and it does a pretty good job)
Give myself a mani/pedi
Apply a face mask
Soak in the tub
Colour/paint
Relax
