We Wholeheartedly Recommend: Nintendo World, The Golden Girls

ep. 134: She insisted on wearing my Chico and the Man T-shirt.
Tumblr media
Before Elsa Klensch was Rory’s fashion icon, she looked to...1970s sitcoms? In this ep, Taylor and the Woman (Kyla) take on hard-to-find Chico and the Man. How has the show aged? What is its legacy—if it has one? And what does this reference tell us about Rory and Lane in kindergarten? TBH, some answers are a little fuzzy, but at least we know Charo is going to show up and shout, “Coochie Coochie!”
Other pop culture we ref: Murder, She Wrote; Fame; Laverne & Shirley; Touched by an Angel; The George Lopez Show; The Tonight Show; Cesar Romero; Lin-Manuel Miranda; Prince Harry; Friends

ep. 131: You went with Faye Dunaway in Network. // And Maureen Dowd "come hither" pumps.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This episode is going to make our ratings bigger than Watergate! Rory is taking her fashion inspiration from another 1976 movie and a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist. What is the legacy of the classic Network? What about Maureen Dowd’s pumps say “come hither” (if anything)? And what do these inspirations mean for a journalism panel Rory is participating in? You know we won’t stay in the dark any longer on these questions—we’re as mad as hell we don’t know, and we’re not going to take this anymore!

ep. 130: Solaris? // Good night, and good luck. (George Clooney double feature!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s a George Clooney double feature! In honor of his new rom-com with Julia Roberts releasing today (Ticket to Paradise - read Taylor’s review), we’re watching two movies he starred in (and one he directed) that are referenced in the Gilmore Girls season 6 episode “You’ve Been Gilmored.” First it’s the 2002 sci-fi drama Solaris, in which Clooney is investigating some weird behavior in outer space, and then it’s the 2005 journalism docudrama in which Clooney is investigating some un-American behavior in the newsroom. What is the story of Solaris? What famous journalist is Paris comparing herself to? What did audiences and critics think of these movies? And did the Oscar buzz get to George Clooney?
We Wholeheartedly Recommend: The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Cheers

ep. 124: We're seriously considering Howell Raines-ing her.
Tumblr media
Stop the presses—we’ve got a scandal! We’re trying to figure out what “Howell Raines-ing” Paris means for the Yale Daily News Staff, which means we’re doing some investigative journalism about Raines and his role in the Jayson Blair scandal of the early ‘00s. We watch the documentary A Fragile Trust: Plagiarism, Power and Jayson Blair at the New York Times, and then we ask questions like: How many lies can you tell before you get caught? Can you lose the company car and keep your job? And is the Yale newsroom the breeding ground for the next Howell Raines?

ep. 123: It's Angela's Ashes. It's Sanford and Son!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Get all the deets about joining our Remarkist chat here.
Welcome to our biweekly round up of sadness and misery! Lorelai is comparing Rory’s new apartment to an Irish memoir and a ‘70s sitcom—you know, like you do all the time. How were we introduced to these references by two modern sitcoms? What do Harry Potter actors have to do with Angela’s Ashes? Can you still go to the Sanford and Son junkyard? ep. 121: You graduate already, Doogie? (Doogie Howser, M.D.)
Tumblr media
Um, nope, Jess—Rory did the opposite of graduating. But you know who DID graduate and then some? Doogie Howser, M.D. We check out the Neil Patrick Harris teen doctor dramedy that was not at all what we were expecting. How did every episode of this show feel like a Very Special Episode? What does NPH think of the show now? And does Doogie have anything in common with Rory?
Other pop culture we ref: The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Full House; Chris Evans; Friends; Doogie Kameāloha, M.D.; How I Met Your Father
We Wholeheartedly Recommend: The Stand-In (2020), The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (2022)
