aeas Update: Flashback Time!

Hi, I'm back (mostly). Time for an update! Chapter 24 comprises two flashbacks -- one from Act I, one from the Epilogue.

Here's a bite. The rest is on AO3. Enjoy!

It was hard to believe they’d only met a tenday ago. 

The “getting to know you” phase of her relationships with all her fellow escapees from the nautiloid had been accelerated, to say the least, but that was to be expected given the circumstances. 

Her instincts about people were generally reliable, but in Astarion’s case, she hadn’t been quite sure what to make of him at first. His performance of the rake was a bit broad at times, but somehow no less effective for it. He was unabashedly devoted to his own self-interest, and hated any commitment of their time or resources to helping others without promise of payment, with particular disdain for anyone in need. He was also a flatterer, a pragmatist, and a rather brilliant wit. 

He was a predator with a mean streak, possibly a bit of a sadist, but… that rather made sense after he’d started to reveal details about what he’d been through the past two hundred years. 

On her way to her own tent from a visit with Gale, a flicker of light caught her eye as she passed his tent. He was standing with his back to the rest of the camp, looking into a hand mirror. 

Curious, she paused, watching him for a moment.

“Looking at something?” he asked blandly —without turning around.

I don't think younger/newer users fully grasp the shit show that ace discourse was around 2014-17

It was so hostile that, to this day, discussions that begin to derail just enough can make me physically nauseous, some specific mockery trigger crying sessions years later. We lost most accounts with any sort of ace positivity. There was no information, no support, and all this damage was done predominantly by other queer people.

All this to say that you, however you identify yourself, should be engaging with aphobic comments the same way you do any hate. We don't sugarcoat or try to be comprehensive with people who are blatantly racist, homophobic or terfs, so why give it a pass just because it's coming from a queer person? I see how this tolerance goes and it's done enough damage as it is.

An Update

Few things could rouse Astarion to a murderous rage like the indignity of a nightmare. 

If it were only being torn from reverie on the verge of a ragged shriek, he might be able to grit his teeth and move on with his day.

But it was never just that.  

It was jerking awake bolt upright in a cold sweat, tangled sheets plastered to him. It was tension through every inch of his frame as he gasped for air. 

It was the brutal tattoo of a heartbeat bought with blood and pain practically rattling his teeth. 

And now, for the first time since that deranged year immediately after he’d ascended, it was her.
