hello new followers you should read this or my Kirk/Spock fic
flesh of my flesh, 2.1k, M. Nancy Hedford/the Companion (f/f)
Supposedly the body suppresses the feelings of your internal organs, filters it all out as so much noise. So that you can't be distracted by your pancreas itching, or the steady squeeze of your heart. The Companion could step past all of that without a thought. She marked each internal organ, every inch of her body, like a lover counting freckles.
(or: what if i was a resurrected diplomat and you were a non-corporeal alien entity animating my body, & we were both girls 😳👉👈)

I know "60s housewives who invented slash fanfiction" has taken on a life of its own as a phrase, but Kirk/Spock didn't really exist until the 70s and THOSE WOMEN HAD JOBS. They were teachers and librarians and bookkeepers and scientists and they damn well spent their own money going to conventions, printing zines, buying fanart and making fandom happen. Put some respect on their names.

kirk: its certainly true that hes physically stronger, taller, heavier than i am. his mind, steely and unshaken, but his heart… his heart is delicate, fragile. like sheets of frozen dew at sunrise on teirzon four…beautiful… how do i know? i see it in his eyes when his gaze lingers a little too long. and i let it. is it wrong that i let it? that i want to shelter him in my arms? kiss him? love him? steal him away from his troubles? or from my own…?
the burly freighter dude missing an eye and covered in tattoos who has been sitting next to kirk overhearing him drunkenly ramble to himself about his love for spock for over an hour now at this random bar: *through tears* you have to tell him how you feel
kirk: you think so…?
several other equally musclebound and scary looking dudes sitting nearby, also in tears: *nodding*

Yes, I'm aware that many people organically arrived at the idea of a romantic relationship between Kirk & Spock and wrote drawerfic and privately shared fic, and K/S grew out of that. Nonetheless, I think that my point stands that Kirk/Spock as a cultural phenomenon--the name, the zines, the conventions of 'slash' as we know & discuss in fandom today--was a product of the 70s, and I think the sources you provide support that, honestly.

Given there's very little detail in canon about how bonds work, people play around with it in fic. Certainly we don't get the impression that Spock has access to T'Pring's innermost thoughts--if he'd known what she was scheming, he wouldn't have brought Jim or Bones to Vulcan with him. Mostly I see people write it as a two-way radio frequency that can transmit emotions as well as language, and either partner can deliberately shield from. (Obviously, taste is personal & you can avoid whatever you like.)
Hot take that will anger people: the idea of the Vulcan marriage/mating bond is horrifying on every level and I can’t read fics that even feature it. The loss of bodily autonomy, the loss of privacy, the sheer invasiveness. Never mind how it also introduces a truly crazy power imbalance when you consider Spock could control it very effectively and Kirk would struggle to do so/ would be unable to do so.
People think giving someone access to the only part of you that can ever be truly private is romantic?????? Literally sounds like the setup for a dystopian novel.
Yucky.
