There was a new book the next night.

It was one for numbers.

Unfortunately, Ghost has left early that morning, a mission taking priority. He wouldn't be back for a few days.

Ikun filled out the book, and put it back in Ghosts room. Then, they were on route to the Captain's room.

Hesitantly, they walked in, finding a 'sound asleep' Price along with another book for numbers, this time how to speak them.

And it had a note on the inside that read 'For the demon.'

And off Ikun went, filling out the book.

And there Price was, recording the figure in the darkness for Ghost with his phone.

Ghost just wanted evidence it was the demon, and not anyone else. (Soap had fucked with him before, he wasn't doing that shit again).

Demon! Reader is now named Ikun because reader doesn't fit my preference it just sounds odd.

The kindergarten book was returned a few days later.

Ikun hazardly walked into Ghost's room, handing the book over to him.

In a rumbling, distorted voice that sounded like it came from the last horror movie Ghost watched, Ikun spoke.

"...Its..Good?"

Inside the book, the outlines of the letters were traced with a shaky hand in pencil. It was another night with Ghost's insomnia. So when he took the book, he looked at Ikun, a small chuckle escaping him.

"...It's great."

The figure seemed pleased, as their eyes squinted, and what Ghost knew to be their tail was wagging as they stood there in the shadows.

"...I'll have a new one for you in a few days, alright?"

"...The..same? Or..different?"

Ikun asked, their hands gesturing to the book.

Literally demon reader and friends

Demon! Reader

They finally got the hang of it by month six.

If they didn't bother anyone, nobody would bother them.

It's why they took to patrolling the base at night, watching everything that could go wrong. They'll pop in to different rooms, looking around, making sure everyone's there.

For those who are on missions, they leave small gifts for when they get back, with small notes that are clearly heartfelt, but are written with child like handwriting.

They never learned how to write. Or spell.

But the gesture was clear—they wanted to make sure that everyone knew they missed them.

March twenty seventh, Ghost was laying in his bed. Insomnia kept him from the sweet lull of sleep, preventing him from having the rest he desperately needed.

Reader popped in, looking around before hesitantly walking in, looking to make sure Ghost was there. In their demonic form, of course.

Keeping up a physical form is hard.

Ghost looked at them, before sitting up, Scaring Reader, who quickly left the room.

The next night, Ghost left a small book ment to teach kindergarteners how to write their ABC's.

Demon! Reader

It was never supposed to happen.

At all.

Three months after the failed exorcism, Reader was still there. Watching; lurking in the shadows of the base. They were still scared.

The only sign they were there was the glowing yellow eyes in the corner of shadows.

After a day, they started showing up in a physical form— as in, they thought of what they wanted to look like as a human. And they did.

They wandered around base, getting used to taking steps, using their hands, and all of that fun stuff with this..weird layer coating the void that they were originally.

It was hard. But they did it. The only sign that it was the demon they summoned was the glowing yellow eyes and the sharp teeth, but that changed over time.

Everything always does.

Soap had placed that the team didn't want Reader to get into blocked off with crosses, holy water, and other things related to the Lord.

Reader never dared stepping close to those areas.

Reader did it anyways.

If you summon something, *expect something to pop up.* Reader thought. They never said anything about it though.

They first showed up in their normal form. A humanoid figure that was blacker than the night sky in a city, the only form of color was the glowing yellow eyes they had.

They scared a lot of people that day. They didn't mean to. They didn't mean to at all. *Don't summon something if you're unprepared*, they thought.

The team couldn't figure out how to put them back where they came from; The pits of hell.

Soap started it.

He made a symbol with the intent of trapping Reader.

It worked.

Price called in a Priest, and Reader was desperately trying to to leave. *They didn't do nothing wrong*, they thought.

Once the priest showed up, Reader's eyes were closed tightly, and the humanoid mass was sitting there on the floor, looking like a square. *They were hugging their knees*."

Who wouldn't? The man hardly ever talks to them, and when he does, it's usually instructions, or a thanks.

They wonder what it is makes Ghost tick.

Demons are supposed to be mean, Ghost thinks. Why does this one stay? Why are they on our side?

He wonders a lot about them.

He wonders why they stay each night for a few hours and watch him sleep. He wonders why he even feeds them skulls, but Reader seems to like the skulls, so he's fine getting them...

Ghost doesn't ask.

It bothers them. They're used to giving out favors like it's candy on Halloween for the rest of the team.

Eventually, they show up in the middle of the night in Ghosts' room in the barracks. Their just a vaguely humanoid black mass with glowing, harsh, yellow eyes; but Ghost knows it's Reader.

He always does. He's seen them roaming the halls on the nights the insomnia kept him from the sweet lull that sleep provides. The dreams of the past that it prevented on those nights. He's seen what they *truly* look like.

It's on the night the sleep paralysis kicked in. Ghost could only watch as reader slowly stalked forward and ripped the sleep demon off Ghost's body, a harsh growl reverberating around the room that sounded like it wasn't something..that would come from a human.

The only sign he gives that shows Reader he approves of their behavior is a gesture that could only be described as something of thanks. Or something that resembled it.

The following mission two weeks later, Ghost carries an old bag in his pocket. Looks for the people who weren't shot in the head and cut their faces off, taking off the flesh to reveal what he was after.

Their skull.

He puts it in a bag, and the following night when Reader comes in to check on Him, Ghost sits up and opens the bag, handing Reader the skull.

"....It's a thanks. Don't get used to it." He claims.

It's a lie. Reader takes the skull, devouring it as it dissapears into the black void that they take at night, their glowing eyes blinking gently at Ghost.

"...It tastes good." Is what they reply.
