Lesbian Misty Quigley who found her place in The Wilderness, being useful to these girls who meant everything to her, and who has felt unmoored, without a purpose since they left The Wilderness. Lesbian Misty Quigley who has been in love with Nat since they were kids, who translates that love into devotion and obsession and acts of service. Lesbian Misty Quigley who asks “when people look at me do they just see someone desperate for love?” because she is desperate. She’s desperate for the approval and validation she’s been chasing her whole like, that she thinks is synonymous with love, but even more so she’s desperate for real love, actual reciprocated romantic love. But she can’t accept that she wants that from women because then she’d have to accept that her worst fears are true: she is different. So she lies and manipulates and stalks and forces her way into people’s lives because that’s the only way she knows how to love them.

This is my favorite Natalie scene because it’s so perfectly representative of her character and morals. She buys something from the vending machine and it doesn’t work, so she breaks the glass with a fire extinguisher and only takes what she paid for.

Nat will do bad things to get what she needs (in this case M&Ms lol) but only if she views it as fair and necessary in some form. The machine took her money, so she’s going to get what she paid for, and nothing more. She has integrity. Even after 25 years, she is still the same moral compass she was out in the Wilderness, which is why she is the character most riddled with guilt.
