It's Okay, not to be Okay...
"Depression is not a sign of weakness - it is a sign that you were trying to be strong for too long" - Sigmund Freud

In other words, being sad or depressed doesn’t mean you are not coping with a situation. Rather, it helps you come to terms with the negative situation and move on.
Everyone feels sad sometimes, just like everyone can feel happy/ angry/ proud/ indifferent and plenty of other emotions. Basically everyone has feelings, and those feeling are always changing. All we have to understand is whatever the feeling is, it is an important part of us.
Depression causes many physical problems, and it raises to the rate equivalent to the effects of smoking 15 cigarettes per day. But in most cases we avoid or hide our Mental Health Problems, but at present it is as common as getting cold & cough where approximately 1 in 6 adults suffer from a mental health condition.
There are an endless number of reasons for humans in this day and age to suffer from anxiety. And since it is an automatic subconscious response, it is much more powerful than your conscious brain, neither you can control it or solve it with rational means, nor you will be able to rid of it. So, to lower your anxiety levels you need to make it a part of your life, learn to work with it rather than fighting it.
Sadness or depression can often be a result of another feeling, such as anger/ stress/ guilt/ grief/ anxiety/ hopelessness or very commonly loneliness. Sometimes, the other feeling may be so strong that you don’t realise you are depressed.
But after a point the symptoms can move beyond feelings of concern or worry to other physical reactions. Initially you might feel sleeplessness, you may get a stomach ache or a headache, or at times may feel some numbness, but the worst, you can even feel severe chest pains something like a heart attack.
Life is full of situations that may make people feel sad and that is very common. But rather than ignoring it, recognising your sadness, and understanding that it is okay to feel sad. This realisation is a sign of a stable sense of wellbeing.
Taking one step at a time towards a positive you, can make you feel better. This feeling may come quickly or may even take little longer time, but that varies from person to person and their level of depression and anxiety and it's okay to take longer, as you are ensuring a complete positive mental progress.
Few tips that might help you:
Be honest with yourself about your feelings and the people around you. Share the things with someone whom you trust without the fear of getting judged.
Give a thought to whether your sleeping and eating patterns are good for you. Try to have positive thoughts before going to sleep. And I feel there is some truth to the saying ‘you are what you eat’.
Get up and face the day. It's normal when depression strikes, even the smallest task can feel like a giant challenge. Simply getting out of bed shows a level of strength that most people will never understand. You are literally standing up to face your demons, which itself is a huge step.
Exercise or Yoga affects a person's overall health. Did you know that there is a direct link between your physical and your mental health? Well, there is. if you do any form of exercise, it actually treats your mental health too.
Find a creative way to express your feelings. You may also do things that you enjoy, which can bring a positive change in you. Find ways to make your life more pleasurable: like listen to music, go for a walk, read a book, call a friend, do some sketching. Basically taking a "me time" to do whatever you like.
Tackle one problem at a time. It doesn’t matter you start with the biggest or smallest problem, just make a list and begin.
Sit under the sun for some time regularly. Sun light stimulates your body, causing a number of ‘feel-good’ hormones to be produced and secreted. And these hormones improve your mood and increase your sense of well-being.
Help someone else. Just by improving someone else’s life, can lift your spirits.
And most importantly have confidence in urself that you can overcome this negative phase and things will improve. You need to trust that your pessimistic thoughts will lessen with time and effort.
If require, seek help from a professional. There is no shame in taking help specially when it is for your own positive growth.
Instead of ignoring it or postponing the self-improvement steps for tomorrow "Start Today"
It is obvious, that every single thing you choose to put into your body, impacts your overall health and functioning.
All you have to do is believe that you are capable of so much more, than you think and take notice of what you are achieving every single day, a small step today can get you bigger results in future.
Escaping the black shadow of depression is not easy, but with constant positive self care and productive lifestyle, it is very much possible. And acknowledging your small steps towards your betterment, will make it much easier to battle your inner demons.
So be proud of your efforts, no matter how small they may seem initially — but they are the first step towards your healthy mind and a better tomorrow.
