I have a little story writing exercise I like to do for fun, and I challenge you to try it.

In the first part I start out telling a little fairytale-like story. As I write, I relax my mind and let random thoughts and words pop into my mind (and onto the page) as I write. I see how many weird and specific details I can put in without forming a pattern. Then in the second part, I try to justify it and turn it into the beginning of an actual story. Here's an example:

Part 1: "Once upon a time there was a lobster who yearned to become a tax collector. He loved Tuesdays and mustard and he didn't know what a quinceañera was, but he knew he wanted one."

Part 2: "The lobster had had a normal crickethood, but sometimes he would emerge from the depths to slide through the kelp around the pier and watch the people passing by. And so he learned about them: a young man who threw all his textbooks on tax law off the pier on his graduation day; a boy who whispered to the water that he was glad for Tuesdays, because his grandmother would pick him up from school and sneak him an ice cream when his father wasn't looking; a little dog with short legs that didn't slow her down one bit as she darted away from her owner with a hot dog smothered in spicy yellow mustard; And once, just once, a young girl, in a gown as vast as the ocean and as glittering as all its treasures, posed for pictures with all her friends until the sun set and they left, giggling and laughing away. The lobster knew then that his life on the seafloor would no longer be enough to make him happy. So he scrabbled open the pages of the waterlogged textbook, and began to study for the QTC exam."

i love that Buttons actually just became a bird because that's the funniest thing imaginable but. who's Stede's first mate now? he's captaining all on his own (bc Ed isn't allowed to atm) and his first mate is a seagull that's in a sexual and romantic entanglement with the literal ocean. Stede does not Know How to Sail a Ship. like godspeed if there's a storm gayboy you're gonna have to figure it out or die

Okay but, the way Jim says “Nope” when Ed asks them if they think the vibe on the ship is poisonous. The resignation, the exhaustion, the barely concealed fury. The knowledge that they’re being manipulated and that there’s nothing they can do about it. The recognition that Ed’s gone from being troubled to just being a fucking bully. The unwavering eye contact and the way they position themself slightly in front of Archie. So much character packed into one tiny syllable. Vico Ortiz you are ruining my life.

My favorite part of Zheng Yi Sao as a character is the complete lack of framing as her as "exotic". Period dramas so often will frame Asian women as exotic fetish objects. None of the characters know where China is nor do they care. Shes their boss and facilitates soup, that's all they know about her and all they care to know

lets make a new trope: gay characters who are actually seemingly impossible to kill to the point that all of their enemies are comically frustrated. functionally immortal gay characters. being gay making you immortal. unkillable gay trope.

once again because I cannot stress this enough: I think it’s so important that ed and stede are together even while ed is still working through his own shit. I think there’s this common trope in mainstream media where damaged characters can’t be with the people they love until they fix themselves completely and become the best version of themselves on their own. and obviously people shouldn’t be in a relationship if they’re not in the right headspace for it but the message that it sends, this weird notion that you have to do all the heavy lifting by yourself to grow while completely isolated before you can even begin a relationship, is so stupid!! and so damaging!!

you don’t have to be whole or perfect or have your shit together in order to have love in your life or to be worthy of love. you can be in a relationship even if you’re not mentally at your best, because being with people you love is actually what helps you grow. having someone you love holding your hand and supporting you through the journey is what makes it easier. and that’s what stede does! because ed doesn’t want to wait until he’s worked on himself. he wants to be with stede now, but also being in a full speed relationship is a bit much so he asks to slow down the pace a little which is so perfect because it lets him be happy AND simultaneously have the space and time he needs to do a little introspection. it just shows how relationships aren’t just stagnant once they become committed, relationships can ebb and flow and shape themselves according to each person’s needs. and I’m just so happy and moved that we actually GET that with stede and ed???
