open to group one in the event
Anxiety is hardly anything new to Sümeyye, but that did little to soothe the nerves that currently filled her belly. Both groups that had set out had been gone for over a day, with nothing to signal their return any time soon, or even the fact that they were still alive. While Sümeyye had chosen to remain at the beach, something she couldn't bring herself to regret, the longer they waited the more anxious she became. She paced the sand back and forth, arms crossed against her chest as the sun began to set in the distance. Another day gone. How long was it suppose to take?
With a huff, she abruptly switched course from her pacing, instead choosing to drop herself onto a nearby log that had been situated by the camp fire. Only a moment of silence passed though, before the Turkish native found herself speaking. "Do you think it's safe?" Her attention turns to the person closest to her, eager for some kind of mollifying response. "Out there." She gestured vaguely to the island around them. "They're alright, aren't they?"

What would likely be to no one's particular surprise, Sümeyye didn't really know what she was doing. This was so far beyond anything in the realm of her expertise, she thought she probably looked like a fool to the other survivors. But even so, if there was one thing she was determined to be, it was useful. Though she had chosen to stay behind from the two expeditions that set out, afraid she would be more of a hindrance than assistance, that didn't mean she couldn't do anything to be helpful. An SOS sign seemed like a good place to start, on the chance that a plane might fly overhead.
"Oh." She's pulled out of her silent mulling, studying the materials at hand, by the sound of another person's approach. "I don't know. I think so?" Her cheeks burn in mild embarrassment. "I was just... going for things that seemed large enough to make a sign out of." So far, all Sümeyye had was a small pile of sticks she had gathered, and even that had taken up a decent amount of her energy. "I think we need more stuff. We should probably make it really big, right?"

OPEN ONLY TO: MEMBERS OF GROUP ONE (IN THE EVENT)
Riley truly didn't have a large thought process when it came to choosing to stay on the beach rather than going on an expedition. Just figured their skills could still be of more use on the beach than on these random expeditions. Plus, it had been a long month, really mentally draining on her and they needed 'Riley time.'
But she could feel some judgmental eyes when they just were sitting around so, eventually, got up and tried to find the simplest thing to do for now. Building the SOS sign. She walked over to someone else, who looked like they were trying to get started, and asked, "So are we using rocks or sticks, or what is it that I can get and do to help?"

There are certainly those better equipped for this kind of fate than Sümeyye. She had never even been camping before, all her outdoor experienced could be narrowed down to her time walking to and from campus. As such, she didn't know quite what she was doing out there, only that she was determined to look after the camp to the best of her abilities. Including making sure the fire didn't go out. Dark eyes snapped up sheepishly after what must have been at least her fourth time poking at the flames, a faint flush bloomed at her cheeks. "I just don't want it to go out." The thought of being to blame for losing an important resource was terrifying. With little else to offer the group, she only wanted to be as useful as possible.
Sümeyye's hand reached up to tuck a strand of hair that had fallen loose back behind her ear. "I've never tended a fire before, just what I've seen in movies." She admitted, a bit shyly.

Liyana hummed quietly to herself as she flipped through one of the magazines she’d found in the wreckage. Most of it was too waterlogged to read, but she enjoyed trying to decipher what the articles had been about before it had taken an extended swim. And when she got bored, at least she could flip to page 24, where her mom smiled back at her, arm wrapped around her father as he held his head high, a smug look of success on his face. Sure, they were a little streaky and wrinkly and her mom’s face was blending into her dress, but it was something.
As she flipped to the next page, she spared a glance over her shoulder to the rescue fire to double check it was still burning just to notice someone bent over the fire, poking at the logs. “Aren’t you hot? It’s like, a hundred degrees.”

history.
Sümeyye was the youngest of two, born into a traditional lower middle class family in Seyhan, Adana Türkiye. Her parents, while loving, were very strict, with a set idea in mind of how their daughter's life would go. For the longest time, Sümeyye did not fight them on it. She was the dutiful daughter, helpful around the home and studying hard at school, rarely ever arguing back against anything put forth to her. She had her freedoms, her hobbies, a love of music and art that would pull at her attention from time to time, but at the end of the day she was always back home to help serve dinner on the table. It was a fate Sümeyye was fine with, at first. Something similar to her parents' marriage, her mother a stay-at-home bride who took care of the house and children. She seemed well suited to it, never showing open desire for anything more.
It was a boy, in the end, that changed the trajectory of Sümeyye's life. His family was money, well above her standing, and yet he took interest in her anyways. He was charming and fun, sweeping the young woman off her feet in a secretive, fairytale romance. Neither family would approve of the match, and so it was kept to themselves, stolen away in private moments to enjoy each other's company. It was foolish thinking, that the world would eventually just fall in line for them to be together, but Sümeyye was young and naïve and in love enough to believe it could conquer anything. When he proposed they run off to get married, she responded with an enthusiastic yes. Everyone else would come around, surely, once it was a done deed. She thought wrong.
While they had gambled everything for love, the reality of that choice set in quickly, sending the romance crashing down. Her husband's family threatened to estrange him if he did not dissolve the marriage, cutting him off from all their fortunes and resources that had shaped his entire life thus far. When it became clear their threats were not bluffs, he folded to their demands and returned home to his family house, leaving Sümeyye behind. Their marriage was annulled within a manner of weeks, a dirty secret to be swept under the rug. The time after her marriage was a miserable period for Sümeyye, choosing to stay at home in her bed more oft than not. It was only the time when her parents began pushing a new marriage, a more suitable and family-approved option this time, that finally snapped her out of it.
Whatever she wanted of life, she decided it was to no longer be a simple housewife. Particularly to someone not of her own choosing. Instead, Sümeyye chose to pursue university, to have something more in her life. All her time and energy was poured into her studies, and her dedication was rewarded with the chance to attend school abroad on a scholarship, landing Sümeyye in the United States for the first time in her life. It was a whole new world for the young Turkish native, but a part of her relished in the opportunity to have a clean slate more than anything.
present day.
It was the holiday break that took Sümeyye to that flight to Sydney. Her roommate at college had also been a foreign student, Australian by birth, and had invited Sümeyye to spend the New Year with her family. It seemed like a good idea, at the time. Better than the thought of going home did, and the chance to see somewhere else entirely new sounded thrilling. If only she knew just how much it would be.
skills.
In way of survival, Sümeyye's skills are few. She's lived a comfortable life, and while her family was never particularly wealthy, they kept food on the table and a roof overhead. Most of her skills are sociable rather than practical, though she is a rather good cook and a decent sewer.
