It has been brought to my attention that a large number of people probably don't know why Campbell's "monomyth" is bunk when discussing anything other than a piece of modern literature written under the direct influence of Campbell, in much the same way that a Freudian analysis of any story that was not written a) after Freud and b) based on acceptance of Freudian theory is bunk.

If you've studied English Lit and haven't done genuine rigorous dives into the serious studies of folklore, mythology, religion, anthropology and a number of other things, then you may have unfortunately been told by your literature professors that Campbell is not bunk. This is, indeed, unfortunate.

This is a solid takedown of why, both in terms of the fact that even Campbell's theory in and of itself is honestly so vague that it's much like a newspaper horoscope (you could shove anything in there and make it match if you tried hard enough), and then also in terms of engaging with the ethnocentric and also intellectually lazy nonsense it is.

Campbell was a literature prof who fully and completely believed in the Jungian (or at least branch of Jungian) premise that humanity has a collective psychic unconscious that is shared across the globe. He took single versions of stories, many of them in translation, massive numbers of them from cultures he did not know and did not understand, and hacked them up and reinterpreted them, out of context and based on Freudian and Jungian principles, to make a claim about a Universal Human Understanding.

This, of course, is ethnocentric bullshit.†

Now much like Freud was incredibly influential on the European literature of the early and mid 20th century and as such you absolutely should keep Freud in mind when reading, say, Sons and Lovers, Campbell was influential (and sadly continues to be influential) among lit and other creative spaces and is certainly applicable to, for instance, Star Wars and Labyrinth.

But much like Freud, you should not actually apply him to anything that wasn't written under his influence, because in terms of application to anything else, his theory is bunk.

It's also not taken seriously in literally. any. field. outside European lit circles and the visual media/etc that are their heirs. In fact the renowned folklorist Alan Dundes* said at one point, "there is no single idea promulgated by amateurs that has done more harm to serious folklore study than the notion of archetype".

tl;dr: fuck Joseph Campbell, stop letting him collapse the gorgeous array of human storytelling, mythmaking, meaning-making and metaphor into a boring tawdry (heterosexist and hetero-sex-obsessed) pastel, he is bunk.

But he's relevant to Labyrinth bc Lucas was a fanboy and also a producer, and the guy managed to convince a lot of people that he was legit.

†for instance just to start with the idea that there is only one version of literally any major cultural/folklore story is itself deeply silly; this is basically never the case. Even stories we here and now are used to thinking of as having one authoritative version - like the story of Achilles being only the Iliad - does not reflect the actual reality of the people of the time. Or us, for that matter: the cultures between the first written form of that epic and now have all of us reinvented, retold, reinterpreted and repurposed the story of Achilles to suit ourselves a million fucking times. There are a billion Achilles.

Fuck, man, you can't even claim there's only one version or one myth-set for fucking Batman, and he really was made up by one dude less than a century ago.

*who is himself not at all perfect, but who was at least an incredibly serious, dedicated scholar of folklore in its inception as an academic field

Happy Pride! Life update

I went and said I was going to keep updating this blog and then of course just, didn't do that. My apologies. It's been very busy!

So, in very short succession, I was rejected for disability, applied for many jobs, *actually got two jobs*, and am getting married sometime this month for a combination of benefits reasons and also because I've been with the same partner for close to six years and we're pretty happy with that situation. So since January it's kind of been back to back logistics.

I work both as a part time TA for a contract company that essentially specializes in grading student work, papers and essays and short essays and whatnot. That's extremely sparse and ended last month, and will be starting up in the fall again. But it's experience/resume builder and I enjoy it, so that's that. My other job is as a Hospital Dispatch Officer, which essentially just means I work the phones at my hospital and I coordinate Codes/Emergencies. It's pretty dull because I work third shift, but when it's not dull it's very very not dull. Because I work third shift.

Anyways, I really do not have plans to resume rping here. For many of the reasons in the og post. However because I am a big spaghetti brain, my discord is Monalux#7839, and I will still rp on there in private, because that format works better for me.

Still not sure what to do with the blog. Probably just continue collecting art here probably.

Hello, Happy New Year, and Goodbye

Hello hello everyone, how are you doing? How is life treating you? I try to keep tabs on my friends in the same quiet way I always have, but over the years people have come and gone. I think about everyone I have talked to over the years here, everyone I’ve written with, or almost written with. You all matter to me a great deal, which is why I’m deciding to make this post, rather than slip quietly into the oblivion of an inactive blog. I am done with Tumblr RP. It’s been years that I’ve gone inactive for months, come back for a few weeks, then left again. There’s a lot of reasons why. The most recent, and I think the last and final nail of me enjoying rp on Tumblr, is the new post editor. The incompatibilities caused by not everyone having the new update, or some still using xkit, have caused issues in cutting threads, something I really need to do since I am a paragraph rper. It’s not the only reason. Since notifications for Tumblr is a blog platform, not a messenger, I tend to forget when it’s my turn. When I maintained a thread tracker it helped immensely, but in general I’ve found over time I just, do not prefer to write with Tumblr. There’s other reasons in here too. I don’t have as much fun with plotless rp then I used too. Most of the people I once rped with are themselves inactive, or I keep in touch with over discord instead, or have disappeared into the ether, never to be seen again. I am a spoony, and it became a lot of spoons for me to be always trying to start the number of threads I would need to keep my brain interested Tumblr rp. It’s hard to always be the one to approach, and to plot, and to maintain, and I just don’t really have the mental energy to do it. So the couple of you that are still around and use mostly Tumblr, unfortunately, got consigned to the part of my brain struggling to maintain interest because I wasn’t meeting said brain’s stimulation needs. And that’s fair to neither of us. You don’t deserve to be ignored because I’m nurodivergent, I don’t deserve to have to deal with a system I find hard to use. I am not, per say, leaving. This is actually my main blog and I really do not want to move my multitude of side blogs. I figure this is actually a pretty good “hub” for my presence on tumblr. I will make sure my discord link is up to date so I can be found there if you so wish. I am not sure what I am going to be using this blog for now, I haven't decided, but I will be around. Just, I am not taking any new threads, and I won’t be replying to the old ones here. I am willing to move old threads to discord if that would interest anyone, but, if discord doesn’t work for you, then I wish you the best, and may you find what you are looking for. There are no hard feelings here, I understand that not every system works for everyone. Best wishes, Happy New Year, and take care.

If the Internet Archive wins this lawsuit, it could be an absolute game-changer for libraries.

Applying the first sale doctrine to digital content could enable libraries to simply buy e-books and lend them on a 1:1 basis rather than having to constantly renew their expensive contracts with vendors. Most public libraries use a huge chunk of their increasingly-limited funds on these licensing agreements, and if some of those funds are freed up they can go towards local communities. This isn’t just about keeping the Wayback Machine. This is about open access to information. This is about ending the artificial scarcity that tech monopolies have created.
