Before trying to understand CBD’s effect on the immune system, it’s important to briefly discuss the immune system itself.
Every minute of every day, we are exposed to an endless stream of diseases, infections, viruses, and bacteria — all of which would ultimately kill us or make us unwell if it weren’t for our built-in immune systems that keep all of these invaders at bay.
The immune system is a network of cells, organs, and tissues that work together to destroy foreign cells or particles, thus keeping your body strong, healthy, and ultimate: alive! The key players who make this happen are white blood cells.
There are two types of white blood cells: lymphocytes and phagocytes. Lymphocytes are more commonly known as B-cells and T-cells, and they destroy antigens (toxins or harmful foreign substances). They also help your body remember these foreign substances so that your immune system can respond quickly and appropriately when it detects another invasion. Phagocytes help absorb and neutralize the invaders, preventing them from spreading and causing more damage.
In addition to protecting your body against toxic invaders, your immune system is also responsible for detecting and eliminating cells that aren’t working properly. Once found, the immune system initiates apoptosis, or cell death, so that the defective cells do not multiply and form tumors and irregular growths.
The Endocannabinoid System and The Immune System
Studies about immune responses regulated by cannabidiol have shown that CBD can influence your immune system through its interaction with the endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system, present in all mammals, helps establish and maintain homeostasis (i.e. balance), between the various systems functioning within our bodies. Our bodies produce endocannabinoids as needed to help modulate or regulate cell function, including the cells in your immune system.
How does CBD Affect the Immune System?
Studies have confirmed that CBD has anti-inflammatory properties, and it can function as an immunosuppressant and immunomodulator. Immunosuppressants are agents that can suppress or prevent the immune response, and immunomodulators are agents used to help regulate or normalize the immune system.
CBD As An Immunosuppressant
Immunosuppressants are agents that can suppress or prevent the immune response. They can help to treat autoimmune diseases such as psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, and Crohn’s disease, and some treatments for cancer also act as immunosuppressants.
Here’s a quick breakdown of how CBD works as an immunosuppressant:
CBD has anti-inflammatory properties, which can reduce the immune system’s inflammatory response. Inflammation is a vital response that isolates infected areas and prevents toxins from spreading.
CBD can promote apoptosis, or cellular death.
CBD can prevent proliferation, or rapid cellular growth.
CBD can modulate or suppress the function and secretion of cytokines. Cytokines are large groups of proteins, secreted by specific cells in your immune system. Their function is to signal molecules that regulate your body’s immunity, inflammation, and white blood cell production.
CBD can also suppress the production of chemokine, which is a group of cytokines that act as chemoattractants. They lead immune cells to an infection site so that the white blood cells can attack and destroy invading microbes.
CBD can suppress T-cell production and function, ultimately suppressing the immune system’s ability to remember foreign invaders.
That’s a pretty extensive list! But for a healthy person, at first glance this list might look more like the things you’d want to avoid. Ideally, you don’t want to suppress your body’s inflammatory response, as toxins could then spread throughout the body. You don’t want to promote unnecessary cell death, nor do you want to stop healthy cell growth. You surely don’t want to suppress the proteins that signal your immune response and lead white blood cells to where they need to be. And you definitely don’t want to hinder your T-cell function and thus hinder your body’s ability to destroy antigens and remember those attackers.
So how then, is CBD good for your immune health?
Because CBD works as an anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressant, it may not be a necessary immune supplement choice for a healthy person. But CBD for autoimmune diseases can be an excellent choice for treatment.

An autoimmune disease is when your immune system does not work properly. Instead of attacking foreign microbes and antigens, your immune system mistakenly attacks healthy cells, tissue, and/or organs. Hi,my name is David Around 4 years ago i was in a bad place. CBD doesn’t usually cause an intoxicating feeling, but research suggests it, too, may help ease arthritis symptoms.
These two chemicals both show potential in easing pain, but in different ways. Choosing a product rich in THC, CBD, or both could make a difference in the kind of pain relief you experience — if any.
Here’s what experts say about the differences between THC and CBD for pain relief.CBD and THC activate different cannabinoid receptors in your body that can stimulate or inhibit brain chemicals and cause certain effects.
“We know a lot more about how THC works in terms of the molecular mechanism [than CBD],” says Steve Alexander, associate professor of molecular pharmacology at the University of Nottingham Medical School, who researches cannabinoids.
“THC activates certain cannabinoid receptors, one of which is in the nerve cells and the other is in the immune cells. When it activates the one in the nerve cells, it reduces the sensation of pain,” he adds.
The high that THC provides can also play a role in how people experience pain. “A little bit of euphoria can help us not care that we’re experiencing quite as much pain, much in the same way that other pain medications work,” says Angela Bryan, PhD, professor of psychology and neuroscience at the University of Colorado Boulder, who has studied cannabis and health.
CBD is much less understood than THC by researchers, although there is anecdotal evidence that it may provide pain relief in some people.
So On a review done in 2018, it assessed how high CBD is when it comes to relieving chronic pain. This review looked at several studies done from 1975 to 2018. These studies tested countless types of pain, such as neuropathic pain, cancer pain, and fibromyalgia.
Constructed from these studies and a handful of research, experts concluded that CBD is genuinely useful in lessening pain and did not cause any adverse effects.
So that wonderful plant seems to be making a giant leap in the medical world as trials and research is done. So once what was deemed so illegal and could send you to prison could really be a massive saviour in many people's lifes when it comes to pain and illness.
