consider an alternate universe where, instead of maiko, zuko and ty lee develop a strong friendship while mai and azula’s close friendship (that might be peppered with some lesbianism) slowly degrades over time. allow me to elaborate.

zuko and ty lee start bonding on the journey back to the fire nation because ty lee is the only one among the people surrounding zuko who doesn’t bully and/or abuse him regularly, and vice versa.

TY LEE: aren’t you cold? what are you doing out here?

ZUKO: i’ve got a lot on my mind. it’s been so long, over three years since i was home. i wonder what’s changed. i wonder how i’ve changed

TY LEE: hm.

Hello! Thanks for sending the prompt. Oh Jetko, my sweet summer ship. This is going to be an AU where Katara does heal Jet, and he, Longshot, and Smellerbee travel with team Avatar. Longshot and Smellerbee end up with Haru and them when they split up at the Western Air Temple. Jet was off doing... something when Katara found Zuko and Iroh, so the catacombs scene still happened. When Zuko shows up at the Western Air Temple, Jet and Katara both give him a really hard time. Sorry I feel like that was a lot of explanation, I hope you enjoy this!

30. Weak, sweaty kisses because it’s unbearably hot.

Zuko sat on the sand, letting his feet rest at the water’s edge, and stared out at the horizon. He was physically exhausted from another morning of training the Avatar, but his mind was whirring, replaying the events of his field trip with Katara. Combined with the emotions that welled up within him at returning to his family’s beach house, and Zuko knew he had no chance at an afternoon nap. 

Zuko was drawn from his morose thoughts when someone sat next to him. “Hey,” Jet muttered, not looking at Zuko, as he carefully sat within reach without touching him. Zuko nodded and turned his attention back to the skyline. 

“Seems like you won Katara over with your little field trip,” Jet said around a stalk of grass. Zuko shrugged, dropping his hands to the sand. 

“She got the closure she needed. That’s all that matters.” Jet snorted.

“And now she trusts you?” He scoffed. “You can’t tell me that wasn’t why you took her.”

Zuko let out a heavy sigh. There would never be a good time to have this conversation. It was always hot, too hot, to think straight. The comet was coming soon. Zuko had to train the Avatar. There were so many reasons for him to brush Jet off and head inside. Instead, he turned to face him.

“I realized Katara had connected her anger with me with her anger over losing her mother. I knew if there was something I could do to help her let go of that anger, I had to. Regardless of what she thought of me after, she deserved the closure,” Zuko said slowly. Jet still refused to meet his eye, even as he responded.

“I didn’t realize you were so level-headed, firebender.” He spat the last word like it left a foul taste in his mouth. Zuko sighed, his hands fidgeting in the sand.

“I guess there’s a lot about me you don’t know.”

They both remained silent for a few minutes, the crashing waves the only disturbance to the silence. When Jet spoke again, his voice was so soft Zuko wasn’t sure he heard him.

“I guess I’d like to get to know you then.”

Zuko turned, shocked, to face Jet again. “I thought you still hated me.”

Jet laughed, though his eyes didn’t dance with amusement like they did when Sokka cracked a joke. “I wish I hated you. But I don’t.” He finally met Zuko’s gaze, his green eyes boring holes into his soul. “I don’t think I can.”

“Oh.” Zuko blinked, feeling a flush spreading up his neck. If pressed, he would blame it on the heat.

“Yeah.”

“So what now?”

In answer Jet closed the distance between them, leaning over to kiss Zuko. It was a weak kiss, too oppressed by the heat to be anything more, but Zuko still sighed against his lips. He tasted like sweat and grass and mango. When Jet pulled back he met Zuko’s gaze.

“I guess we’ll figure it out as we go,” he suggested. Zuko nodded, tentatively placing his hand over Jet’s. 

He was more than happy to see where Jet led them.

Zutara Month Day 9: Scars

This is the part where I kinda explain how the flowers work cause it do be a bit confusing. Flowers appear on your body whenever your soulmate gets injured. As their injuries heal, the flowers slowly fall off then stop growing. They only stay if the injury leaves a prominent scar. You can pick the flowers but they will come back as long as your soulmate has an injury or a scar. They don't grow back immediately tho and take quite a while to pop up again. I like to think that Katara gets used to picking her flowers because they remind her too much of Kya's death, so only Sokka and Zuko (back in the catacombs) have seen them. Also when your soulmate dies, the flowers wither away when they fall off. I think you'd be able to feel them when they wither, so that's what happened to Hakoda when Kya died. (The flowers he got are hydrangeas from the fic I mentioned)

I actually had another part of this which was a Zuko pov, but this was already taking too long and it's a day late already so I ended up not doing that. But like if anyone wants to see it I could maybe clean up the sketch and post it

It’s so amazing how in Zuko Alone Ehasz not only explores Zuko’s past but also explores the effect that the Fire Nation’s war has had on Earth Kingdom citizens through the lens of someone who has such a complex relationship with the Fire Nation. It perfectly establishes the conflict of Zuko’s arc by putting his values in conflict with what the Fire Nation is doing to the rest of the world. 

Through the flashbacks we’re told how his childhood shaped him into someone who perseveres and never hesitates to fight for people who can’t fight for themselves. Then it places him in a position where no one knows who he is (including him, in a more abstract way) so that he can play hero to these Earth Kingdom citizens without them realizing that he’s Fire Nation. He displays his values in how he saves Li from the Earth Kingdom soldiers but is painfully reminded at the end of the episode that the village’s real *villain* isn’t the group of soldiers, it’s the Fire Nation, and he’s not truly helping anyone if he’s still supporting the Fire Nation’s war. 

This episode is really so brilliant and I could really go on and on about how perfectly Ehasz characterizes Zuko’s family members, advances Zuko’s arc, and builds the world that ATLA is set in. 

Yeah, Zuko Alone is still one of the very best, if not the best, episodes of Avatar. The shocking and disturbing revelations about his family and backstory are riveting, the choreography of his fight with the earthbenders is incredible, and the choice to explore Zuko’s psychological trauma through the framework of a Western is brilliant. But above all, the moment when Li turns on Zuko and rejects him for being a firebender is so important, as it’s the first of many scenes in his path to redemption in which he tries to help but is ultimately rejected by those he saves. It’s such a pivotal episode for his character development, and it’s still one of my favs.

the way she asserts her dominance through nothing but how she stands and speaks..... lures this guy in by pretending she’s asking a simple question.... then puts him on the spot...... and doesn’t even explain a way that he could complete the task........ just makes sure he knows that he better figure it out...... doesn’t even face him directly at all until the end when she’s made her point........ ugh she’s amazing. everything ab her introduction in this episode SCREAMS difficult villain to defeat.

It has come to my attention through various sources that @japanese has taken my Old Friends edit without my permission, did not credit me, and made a joke out of it in this post that now has more than 3.6k notes.  I also can’t tag this person or speak to them directly because they have me blocked :)

I want you all to know that this is unacceptable fandom behavior and that you should do nothing but condemn it.  You do not take someone’s fanwork with their ships and use it as the butt of a joke for your ship and personal headcanon, especially not publicly like this.

The way the Zukka fandom has repeatedly failed at acknowledging that other fans of ATLA have different sexuality headcanons for the characters is a tell-tale sign of their idea of activism and representation in media.  You guys have shown time and time again that you don’t understand what actual representation is, and you would rather target real people from marginalized communities over FICTION than understand that “Hey! We have different headcanons for these characters, but that’s okay because they are fictional and don’t have confirmed sexualities, so we can interpret them however we like in fanon.”

And don’t even get me started on how you have treated Zutara shippers like myself.  You have called me and multiple other shippers “homophobic” “colonizer apologists” “misogynistic” and accused us of being identities that we are NOT or invalidated our own.  You have serious issues that you need to come to terms with as a fandom and change your behavior, because you are doing nothing but hurting people.

This person took my edit, most likely from Twitter, edited into their unfunny meme, and played it for laughs.  It was quite obviously not an official artwork, meaning this person knew that it was fanmade, yet they still decided that it was okay to use and mock.  They did not ask me permission or credit me like I asked y’all to.  There is nothing okay about this and I hope you’re all ashamed of the fucking assholes that your fandom has an abundance of.

I tend to only like levelheaded criticism with no real bitterness on this blog but Kataang has so many bad vibes to me, I’m genuinely shocked that so few people see the issues on the overwhelmingly female site.

Roku and that random prisoner never met Katara, but say she’d fall in love with him because “he’s a nice guy and the avatar, she’s sure to come around.”

i don’t think i’ve ever ranted on tumblr before, so let’s go besties

this is not a structured essay keep in mind this is me raging

i genuinely cannot understand how people see aang giving up the avatar state “for katara” as some kind of fucking grandiose sacrificial gesture he made for the sake of her safety and happiness, or how in the name of GOD it is in any way compared to zuko taking lightning for katara.

how the fuck is aang giving up the avatar state supposed to help katara ???? how does it benefit her in any way ??? him mastering the avatar state was so that he could CONTROL the power that he ALREADY has to use it for good, so he can save the literal motherfucking world. katara would only BENEFIT from him mastering the avatar state. in fact katara is shown to be AFRAID of the avatar state when aang has no control over it. how is that some kind of sacrifice he made to benefit her ??? its DOES NOT benefit her

aang giving up the avatar state stems from nothing but FUCKING selfishness. he literally could not give up his ATTACHMENT to katara. him giving up the avatar state was a result of him literally being unable to let go of katara for the sake of the world. he literally said the words, ‘why would i chose cosmic energy over katara?’ 

and keep in mind, this was BEFORE he realized that she was being attacked by azula (which is a whole other shitshow regarding the extremely trite ‘damsel in distress trope’ but dont get me started on that). is that even a question ??? i wouldnt have a problem with this if aang was TAUGHT that he should value his duties of saving the world after 100 years of suffering over his personal desire to pursue katara romantically. but the show literally praises him for this ??? i fucking hate it anywayssssssss

and let me just be clear i dont have some kind of inexplicable irrational hatred for aang or anything but his character writing is truly awful at times and the way ATLA fans spout these kinds of baseless claims just irks me a little tiny bit 

oh yeah one more thing??? the way this issue just OBJECTIFIES katara like hes choosing katara as if theyre already in a relationship or something ??? as if theres even the slightest sign that katara reciprocates at this point in the story?? hes talking about her as if they are just GOING to be together no matter what, like he always does, like goddddd this pisses me off
