“I am the man in this situation even when you try to cut me down to size. My toes are manly.” Christian shot back. An air of normalcy wafted through the tight space of her room. The constant beeping of the machines had fallen on deaf ears in exchange to take in every raspy word that she uttered. Christian had been left in this void for weeks with nothing but silence to keep him company. His hand curled around hers, tightening it’s grasp to reminder that he was never going to leave. “I know and it makes you the toughest and purest of us all but we have to follow codes to prevent things like this. We could have lost you and all of those people at the same time. Where would we be then?” Christian knew the haste in his motions to pull her into his arms would fair out two ways: a snarky comment or a stray hit to his side. He didn’t care. Maggie needed comfort and he needed her.
“I’ll tell you everything I know.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“i just woke up, i don’t want your damn toes to be the focus of the first conversation i have,” maggie tries to joke, but really -- toes are not exactly the thing she wants to focus on right now. in fact, her mind is already racing through the memories of that day that she still has access to. most if it’s a blur, she can remember tommy merlyn helping that man and firestorm flying in, but beyond that? it’s foggy, and there’s nothing worse than having incomplete memories. all she has to go on right now are the words of others, and currently the only person within talking distance isn’t exactly being open about those particular events. “protocols and classroom theories go out of the window the second civilians are put in grave danger, you know this. i’ve seen you throw yourself in the middle of things far too many times to count, and that’s exactly what i did.” at least, that’s what she thinks she did. she always puts civilians and their safety above her own. there’s no shadow of a doubt that she almost got killed in the hopes that it would prevent the death of an innocent. being a fragile human has not and does not ever change that fact for maggie sawyer. “you’d be in the same place you were before i even came onto the scene, christian,” she then states, immediately reverting back to downplaying her importance in anyone’s existence. “there’s --” her attempt of a new sentence is muffled by his shoulder as she’s scooped into his arms and, for once, she doesn’t stop him. “i hope you remember this,” she mutters into the fabric of his shirt. “it’s not gonna happen again.” after a pause, maggie uses what little strength she has to pull back from the hug so that she can see his face again. “just tell me the truth, okay? even if -- even if it’s bad. am i still able to be a cop?”

The call through that a Detective Sawyer wanted to see her had been a little unexpected, but Lena had schooled her surprise with as much as grace as she could manage before calling her through. She shot Maggie a small smile, barely able to get out a greeting before Maggie was holding something out to her - belatedly, she realised, it being covered in gift wrap and bottle-shaped. “Oh.” She replied, unsure how to respond for a moment as she took it from Maggie’s outstretched hand and carefully pealed away the wrapping paper, intent not to rip it. The Luthor Manor had an entire cellar filled with wine bottles, there were plenty in her liquor cabinet at home, and she even had 2 stored in a locked drawer of her desk for particularly long nights in the office - but she still held it as reverentially as if Maggie had handed her a 1990 Romanee-Conti. “Thank you, Maggie. You really didn’t have to.” She shook her head, putting the bottle down on the desk between them as she rose to stand up. "It wasn’t any trouble. If anything I wish I could have done more - for both of you. But it’s good to see you back on your feet.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“yeah, i know. i just... wanted to, i guess?” maggie isn’t even remotely sorry that she was the one to arrest lena - at the time she thought it was the right thing to do and the evidence pointed to it. now, bygones are pretty much bygones. they seemed to have moved past that enough for lena to show up at the hospital and comfort maggie’s best friend, the least the shorter woman could do was show her appreciation in the one way that she could: alcohol. “you did more than enough, i can promise you that. i, uh -- i guess i’ve never really had anyone that’s shown up for me, you know? it kind of -- it threw me through a loop.” she shifts awkwardly. “it’s not just for me, though. you kept christian from doing something stupid and that’s not an easy thing to do. you’re one tough woman, lena luthor. it’s... impressive,” she chuckles. “but thank you. i’m, uh -- i’m glad to be on them, too. i don’t do too well with staying still. being in that hospital, it was -- yeah, it wasn’t pleasant, and i’m guessing i didn’t exactly make it easy on the staff there, either.”

“It’s not-” Patty started trying to refute Maggie’s words, cutting herself off as she pursed her lips, trying to figure out the best way to say it without it coming off as more attempts at coddling her. “I’m not you’re babysitter, Maggie. I’m a cop, same as you. And as cops we have partners - because when we don’t things can go sideways, and people can get hurt.” She stated, nodding as she internally assured herself that she had made her case well.
“And… yeah, I’m caring. I care. Is that such a bad thing?” She questioned, her tone a little exasperated as she folded her arms over her chest, trying to jut out her chin in what she hoped came off as a confident stance. “If I’m going to be watching your back, you should consider that a plus, rather than a negative.” She pointed out, giving herself a mental pat on the back for the fact her tone didn’t waver.
The plea almost had her softening completely, going straight to the Captain and begging him to put Maggie with anyone else, someone she would even tolerate comfortably, if not particularly want. But she steeled herself as best she could - she was determined to prove to Maggie, and to herself, that this could work. She owed Christian enough to make sure his partner remained in good hands. “No welcome back party, don’t worry.” She muttered - she may have floated the idea around the precinct and been told in no uncertain terms by everyone that it would not be ‘Sawyer’s kind of thing’. “I’m happy to get straight to work, but I’m just following orders - I’m supposed to help you settle back in, and that’s what I’m going to do.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“i had a partner,” maggie simply states. for someone who prides herself on not getting attached to something so flippant as another being, she did have to go and get attached to that blue eyed idiot. it’s barely been three hours since she clocked in and she already misses his morning grumpiness. she knows that whatever is going on isn’t technically patty’s fault, but still; maggie is stubborn and it’s hard to see past a wall when she herself constantly throwing more bricks at it. “yeah, well, i’m desk bound so the only person that’s going to get hurt is the one who gets between my stapler and the wall i’m probably going to throw it at once boredom and frustration is fully kicked in.” unfortunately for those around her, she’s pretty much almost there. she hates being caged in.
for a moment, maggie just stands there in silence. is there a problem with the fact that someone cares? she knows christian cares, and lena cares to an extent, but others? maggie has lived a life where everyone who has said that has either kicked her out or walked out themselves. from her point of view, real caring is in short supply, and the supply of her trusting that is even shorter. so... it’s not exactly a conversation that she would like to have, especially with the resident sunflower. “never said it was a negative. we just don’t work on the same wavelengths,” she says, matter of factly. “besides, we both know there’s literally no point in me having a partner if i’m not ecen allowed to do my job. so... you’re wasting your time here, spivot.”
“i get it, okay? orders are orders and i understand that, but i’m not a three year old child. i don’t bend or break easily -- head injury aside -- so don’t skip around me like i’m covered in fragile tape. i’m back at work and i’m good to go.” and she has her medication on hand for when the time for her doses comes around. either way, she’s considered every angle and she knows there’s a risk to coming back so early in her recovery, but it was either this or drive herself insane at home. she figured that she could at least try and do some good to make up for the time she missed while unconscious. “if you’re helping me settle in then tell me about your most recent case. i’m here now, apply that whole fresh eyes thing. i just... i need something to do.”

maggie isn’t good at this. she’s not good at being on the receiving end of a person caring. she’s removed herself so far from that side of life that she was started to get one dimensional in her thinking and attitude. with christian and lena continuously pushing through her barriers time and time again, it was of no surprise that maggie began to crack. so, with a gift wrapped bottle of wine in hand, and a silent prayer that it wasn’t too cheap for someone like lena luthor to drink, maggie makes her way into the woman’s office and extends the gift out. “just, uh -- just a small thank you for being there for, uh -- for christian.” she shifts her weight from foot to foot then backtracks a little. she’s not here for christian. at least, not entirely anyway. “and for being there for me, too...”

“Never. Just fed up with all the waiting, it’s different.” Christian snipped back with a snarled lip. Maggie’s insufferable nature to hold onto some figment of control is what landed her here. She put herself on the line against metas to retain control over a failing situation. He kicked himself for allowing such a pigheaded, big hearted idiot like her out on the front lines without him to yank her back into orbit. “You hit your head pretty good and got a few scraps. You’ve got all ten ugly toes and fingers. You’re okay,” he stated firmly to shoo away the emotion that played on the back of his throat. “They’re gonna want to do some tests but that’s normal. Everything’s going to be okay, alright? I just need to just chill for a second and let them help you.
Tumblr media
“Please–for me.”
Tumblr media
“if anyone has ugly toes here it’s you,” maggie retorts in return. this feels too normal after everything that’s happened. it shouldn’t be this easy to fall back into their usual banter and bickering as if nothing happened - like she didn’t almost just die. if she closes her eyes, she can erase the hospital room from her vision and pretend she’s stretched out on christian’s couch as they watch a dumb horror movie that numbs her brain with every passing second. if she tries hard enough, she can imagine that none of this happened. but it did, and the pain that surges through her brain is a constant reminder of that. “--- i thought i could handle it,” she admits, slowly. “people were getting hurt, chris. i couldn’t -- i couldn’t just stand back and do nothing.” maggie goes above and beyond her physical capabilities to make sure that an innocent doesn’t get hurt, but this had apparently proven to be her body’s last straw. “i tried -- i tried so hard to save them.” even surrounded by powered people, they still failed. how could they have failed so badly? “i -- i remember just seeing their faces. i can’t --” she shakes her head and pulls her hand from christian’s so that she can wrap her arms around herself. she hates feeling this vulnerable. she just wants to forget and move on. she just... can’t. still, she eventually concedes to his requests and attempts to relax. “fine, they can do the tests -- only if you tell me everything.”

alex leaned against the door frame, arms crossed over her chest as she stared at the woman’s figure. she’d only had brief encounters with sawyer, but when she heard she’d gotten injured, alex felt it was vital to at least pay a visit, check up, offer any resources the deo had that weren’t available at the hospital. after all, she was working with the deo, therefore she was one of her people, and alex looked out for her people. her eyes flickered up when she heard the groan pass the woman’s lips, “last i heard, scotch and head injuries did not go well.” alex remarked as she glanced over her shoulder. the nurse said she was only allowed near the door, but when she saw no one was around she walked in slowly, “how do you feel?”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“so i’m told,” maggie replies as she rubs a hand down her face. she’s not been awake long and she already wants to get up and leave the bed. hell, she wants out of the hospital completely. maggie sawyer doesn’t do too well when it comes to sitting idle, and if you add injury on top of that it’s even worse. “i feel like draaga used my head as a trampoline,” she then mutters. after a pause, maggie pushes her body forward and rests folded arms atop of her bent knees. the movement sickens her and she feels dizzy, still she pushes through. the sooner she can move around on her own and the sooner she can get back to normal the better. “please tell me that the bastard that did all of that has been caught.”

“So, the desks got rearranged a little while you were gone.” Patty started off, her shoulders a little tense as she moved around the small bracket of desks. “I got switched to between you and Dick - Captain said it just makes it easier. I have a few cases to work with Dick and Captain Singh, he… wanted me to help you out with settling back in.” She explained with a shrug and hesitant smile shot in Maggie’s direction. She had taken the news that she was basically going to be filling Christian’s shows part-time with as much as grace as she could manage - which admittedly wasn’t much. But she had swallowed down her nerves and forced herself to shoulder the burden - she was half the reason he was gone in the first place, she had to take some of the consequences.
Working with Maggie was a daunting prospect - from what little she knew of the other woman, keeping her from jumping straight back into action wasn’t going to be easy, even less so with Christian’s absence. And Patty got the feeling that there was something about her Maggie just didn’t particularly like - which was fine, really, Maggie didn’t have to like her but… being disliked wasn’t something she was used to. “I know you probably want to… knuckle down and get back to it, but doctors are you should take it a little slower than usual. But… hey, we’ll make the most of it, right?”

maggie doesn’t like change. she’s seen far too much of it in the short amount of time that she’s lived thus far. the things that she had in her life not only had a purpose but also a place; there’s a routine that she sticks to that stems from comfort and safety. she rarely deviates. so, coming back to work after being absent for so long to find everything has changed is quite... it’s disconcerting. it’s safe to say that she doesn’t like it. the fact that there’s a blatant christian sized hole in the pen also does not escape her notice. in fact, it causes her fists to clench behind her back; hidden from sight by the back pocket of her dark jeans.
“look, i get that you’re all caring and stuff, but this isn’t kindergarten. i’m a fully grown woman capable of looking after myself. not to mention i can make my own decisions and decide if i’m able to carry the workload or not,” she speaks. “i’m here to work - just like you, just like everyone else. i don’t need a babysitter.” in fact, she doesn’t really need anyone. with christian gone, maggie has no desire to fill that gap that he’s left. even if he’s just absent in her work life, there’s still a hole; an ache that she thought she would never have to feel again. so, looking at patty and seeing how positive she is during times like these, it frustrates maggie. how can someone with so much weight on her shoulders be -- well, be like this?
“if this is the part where you throw me a welcome back party i just want you to know that i’ll quit right here and now. i’ll hand my badge and gun in and leave. i don’t -- just, no fuss. can we just get back to work?” there’s a long pause and maggie exhales slowly as her hands slowly relax and uncurl so that she can safely fold her arms atop of her chest. “please.”
