cristobal is sitting in the car, his face toward the window. he doesn’t want to look at his father. he doesn’t want to explain the blooming bruise around his right eye. the metallic taste of blood in his mouth from the busted lip he’s also sported. he doesn’t want to answer, in truth he wants to go home so that he can put peas from the fridge onto his eye and lay in bed. but instead, his dad was asking questions. ‘ it doesn’t matter, ‘ he almost whispers to the other in the front seat. he knew his father might think the reason for the fight was childish. sure, two men getting into a fight over a girl wasn’t new but his father wouldn’t approve. he’s sure of it. sure, cristobal himself thought it was a chivalrous act, but his father would have probably thought it foolish instead. ‘ i just wanna forget it. it isn’t a big deal. it was just a dumb fight. ’ teeth clench, he'll get that asshole back. he just doesn't need his dad to know he's already planning his own form of revenge.
