the tiefling is like a fucking ... she doesn't even quite know what her thought process was. it felt negative. what she is, without the negativity, is a person who misses her partner whenever dronia isn't at least one room over. there's a gifted cigar between her clawed fingers. she's sitting just on the bench outside their room. the new one with a little balcony overlooking the lake. the last light they fixed up. she isn't wearing a shirt. the weather has a crisp feeling to it and she's just enjoying it. since the months the curse has been lifted, this land has been rebuilding itself quickly. taking everything back. she now sees what everybody was devastated about.

with the cigar dangling between her legs, her free hand traces the little metal bar that held the infernal engine in place. a frown. there's an identical one on her back. she doesn't even quite remember if the tattoos surrounding the machinery came first or the machinery came first. most of avernus, the first time, was a real blur. she has flashes of hacking apart imps and moments of trying to be herself. otherwise, for the most part, she couldn't be herself. she had to be zariel's.

karlach flinches, head turning quickly, the hand with the cigar raising. as if she was absolutely ready to fling that at someone as a weapon. it's the way she instantly smiles, this small flicker to her lips, body relaxing again, returning to it's hunched forward position overlooking the lake. all when she realizes who it was. it's hard to believe that a few seconds she was so eerily unsatisfied with herself. now she isn't quite as much.

one of the headcanons about karlach i like the most and that larian actually puts in their little animated shorts too is that while she does usually melt at her s/o's physical contact, i also love that literally anyone else can also cuddle with her but this time she is SO casual about it, literal teddy bear vibes. you just want someone to hug? karlach has you. need someone to just curl into? definitely pick karlach. she'll just be chilling.

A LINKED VIDEO OF KARLACH GETTING ANGRY, and this is after you break up with her. i'm actually 100% for Karlach setting boundaries and not being a pushover. Like, out of every single time she's gotten angry, it was usually for a big moral obligation -- gortash, the dark urge choosing to become spawn, etc. This time it's just because you broke her heart and she was ready to ... break some bones. It's just always the reminder that she is literally Zariel's Champion and can be incredibly powerful.

anytime i'm subjected to a video of karlach talking about exactly what happened - ie gortrash selling her to zariel and just suddenly being forcibly shoved into avernus in a moment's notice it makes me want to cry out of cruelty, but more so because it was so cruel but karlach fought tooth and nail to retain the heart she also forcibly lost. she wanted her soul, she wanted her kindness, and she'll be DAMNED if she let that rat man and fallen devil take THAT from her when they took everything else. and what bothers me too is that she wants to ask gortrash why he did ... but she knows why he did it. he did it just for the money. that's it. she just wants to hear another reason. a better reason. something more solid.

something that makes more SENSE than just money.

i have this big headcanon in my head about good vs. evil and karlach will just never be an evil character, but -- that doesn't mean she hasn't done awful things. or that she can't be brutal or even vicious. her softness truly does come from a place of violence ... and her past is laced in blood, gore, and what it takes to truly survive. half the things we hear about her are placed down as gently and maybe there's a reason for that. shadowheart's the only one that gets an actual flashback, but i feel it's important to understand some things for her characterization, especially about her horrendously violent past.

i. her heart was ripped from her chest and i can assure you that it wasn't done carefully or kindly in any capacity. she probably endured a ton load of pain in order for that infernal to be set there and to be working. the scars all over her chest and arms are probably from the initial entry and it being too hot that it burned her from the inside out until it truly became a part of her and she learned to live with it like it is her heart. furthermore, it will continue to hurt and haunt her mentally because it's a connection to her mother. it was her heart.

ii. there's probably moments of respite in avernus, but overall never forget she was the frontlines of a consistent war. she probably had to eat whatever disgusting animals and WHATEVER was in avernus at times. she does actually make a comment at one point in moonrise towers if you spray her with the gore from the mindflayer colony where she comments on it tasting like ... dwarves. it's probably more than likely a joke, but there's a deeper implication to it that also revolves around the fact she may have been addicted to soul coins in avernus and by tav and friends simply not supplying her any, she's getting herself off of them. furthermore, those are souls. she just literally eat souls as a form of energy drink ... because that's what it took in avernus if she wanted to keep fighting.

iii. she was so wildly dehumanized in avernus because she was just zariel's pet. this one is more of an obvious one. she was not a person to zariel but just a weapon.

&, despite all this, because all this, her affinity for love and kindness is probably something she really, really had to fight to keep at times in avernus. yet, she did, and she keeps fighting for love and kindness and this makes her a wildly GOOD character despite some horrendous deeds in the past.

controversial maybe, but did we ever think about how wildheart and other class abilities make hunting game kind of difficult if we can just chat the animals up any other time. all kills must be mercy and clean. actually, this IS brought up in the avatar game. and while nobody can talk to animals in pandora, all na'vi are intricately connected to wildlife and the outdoors. so each kill is thanked and that's probably karlach with pure widlife that aren't absolute controlled or monstrous etc.
