Just because Leonette can be considered to be soft™ I feel the need to say that her kindness is not a weakness. Yes, she is kind, && yes she has been somewhat sheltered by a privileged life. But this doesn’t mean she can’t be angry, that she can’t feel sorrow, that she can’t rage out at others.  Leonette is somewhat passive most of the time, she doesn’t make a fuss over things, && she doesn’t store away her distaste && petty annoyances. She saves her rages for times when she feels strongly about something. She’s not a pushover, even if it seems that way, that she’s happy to go along with things, she won’t.

HEADCANONS & PLOT POINTS

( HC ) When the third child of Steffon Fossoway and Florence Serry was born, the people smiled but they did not marvel her beauty. Those of the Reach coveted all things spring, and in her elder sister Leonette, they got the sunshine of spring. She was born small, and her wails caused a great fright, there were no birds singing around her bassinette. For many, the Reach was a place of prosperity, but Serena always felt like she was the slow dying flower. Something festered within her, a darkness which she struggled to conceal, the hot flashes of envy which surged in her veins. It started slowly, from the way her father doted upon Leonette, to the attention which her sister gained simply by being so beautiful. The arrangement of Leonette’s marriage to a Tyrell was enough for her to loathe her sister. For the entire wedding, there was a permanent scowl on her face.

( HC ) As she spent more time on her own, Serena’s imagination grew wild and untamed, she could tell a story to anyone and convince them that it was true, but she was not always kind with it. Bored and spiteful, she would get her handmaidens into trouble, accuse them of breaking things which she had purposely broken - anything for attention. Her father dutifully got rid of the culprits, but her mother always saw through her lies. Not that it mattered. The more she was convinced to spend time with her family, the more she shunned their company.

( HC ) When the Fossoway’s declared for Stannis Baratheon, Serena was thrilled. It went against the Tyrell’s support for Renly Baratheon, and as a result gained her a powerful marriage. The Swanns were a prominent noble family from the Stormlands and her betrothal to Lord Donnel Baratheon, Heir to Stonehelm sealed their loyalty. The proud and powerful family was just what she needed, something for her to boast about.

( HC ) Away from her family, Serena truly thrived. When her husband’s father Gulian Swann was captured and executed, she played her role well and acted as any concerned wife would do. But inside she was filled with joy, for it meant that the control of Stonehelm went to her husband and she was its lady. Running her own keep was what she had been bred for, she may have been jealous and spiteful, but she still paid attention to every lesson given to her as a child - she could be as charming as any of them.

( HC ) In her short years of marriage, Serena has had a set of twins, Joanna and Hugo, both of whom she would give her life for. Every day she ensures that they have equal amounts of love, for she never wants them to feel the resentment towards one another, that she has felt towards Leonette.

( PLOT ) Her complicated relationship with Leonette. The angst and drama is what I’m here for, and there’s a lot of tension there. For a while she’s been able to pretend that her sister does not exist, their families rival one another and her children do not even know who their aunt is, but the gathering at Dragonstone will force her to once again acknowledge her sister, even if it’s the last thing which she wants to do.

( PLOT ) The Swanns are a powerful family, it was what drew her to them, and she is determined that they should profit from the war. She has not long been in her role as Lady of Stonehelm, but she understands the importance of politics and ensuring that the house makes tactical moves which will continue to gain the favour of King Stannis and the other Storm Lords. She wants to reap the benefits of being loyal to the one true king, Stannis Baratheon.

( PLOT ) Her relationship with Donnel interests me. Are they like-minded? Does he disprove of her scheming and pursuit of power, or is he happy to that they share the same vision? She has a dominant personality, so I want to know what can come out of her marriage. Does she allow herself to feel love? Has it allowed her to feel a little less lonely? Ugh, I’m weak for this and I need to know more.

Adding to what I’ve said... Leonette feels v uncomfortable, socialising & sharing a space in court with a honoured knight that’s dubbed as Lothor Apple-Eater.

By all accounts, Leonette is a summer lady who has known very few personal hardships (when compared to other characters.) However, after Renly's death, her family did side with Stanis. They fought against the Tyrells, against Garlan & were ultimately defeated. It's hard to believe Leonette was unaware of the Tyrell's plans to enter the battle of blackwater. She knew her husband was going to fight against her family, she knew they were going to be ambushed & she had to make the choice, being loyal to her blood kin or her marriage vows.

#new term so i'm v busy at work #but i can't even think about the stress this girl was under #and how she arrived at court knowing her head of house was held captive #and had to hope the Tyrell's could charm Joff (a known cruel Tyrant.) to let her cousin go #[LEONETTE; HC. ] — SHE WAS A FOSSOWAY AS WELL.

I stand on my headcanon that Garlan & Leonette married for love, considering that...

Leonette's father probably did at least have talks with other families for potential matches for Lettie. I don't think a match with the main Tyrell branch was even considered, having the connection already been made years earlier with Jon Fossoway (Her cousin & head of the house.) + Jenna Tyrell.

Even if her father had considered her chances, I don't think Mace would have approved without some persuasion, esp since he probably wanted a better political match for his sons. Leonette is a daughter of a branch family in the Fossoway house, she does not have a direct claim, & while her dowry would be substantial, she wouldn't bring the same political advantages as another union would have. (Also could cause a rift with the red apple Fossoways claiming that the Tyrell's favouring the green apples.)

This union was probably possible, after quite a few years of pinning & Willas' smart manoeuvrings.
