Minimum wage increase makes the ballot

Secretary of State Mark Martin has certified that the campaign to increase the minimum wage submitted sufficient valid voter signatures to qualify for the November ballot.

The drive used labor-backed and a progressive charity's money for a hurry-up petition campaign that was cleared only after an Arkansas Supreme Court ruling stopped Attorney General Leslie Rutledge's blockade of popular ballot initiatives.

Needing 67,887 signatures, the campaign for a fair wage gathered 84,526 signatures, Martin said.

The initiated act would increase the $8.50 per hour state minimum to $11 by Jan. 1, 2021. The state Chamber of Commerce and other corporate interests will oppose an increase in pay for lower-income Arkansans. They will also be voting to limit access to courts for injured people, to preserve long-term limits that protect their legislative servants, help the Republican Party with a vote suppression amendment and likely acquiesce to the expansion of gambling at two major corporate casinos.

Little Rock city races set

Filing for Little Rock political office closed Friday. Glen Schwarz, a perennial candidate, filed late to join Baker Kurrus, Warwick Sabin, Frank Scott Jr. and Vincent Tolliver in the race to succeed retiring Mayor Mark Stodola.

Other races:

Ward 1: Incumbent Erma Hendrix, 88, has opposition from Ted Adkins, Herbert Broadway, Bryan Frazier, Greg Henderson, Ronnie Jackson, Curtis Johnson, Danny Lewis and Robert Webb.

Ward 2: Incumbent Ken Richardson has opposition from Rohn Muse, Shalonda Riley and Valerie Tatum.

Ward 3: Incumbent Kathy Webb is unopposed.

Ward 5: Incumbent Lance Hines is unopposed.

Ward 6: Incumbent Doris Wright has opposition from Sandy Becker, Vicki Hatter and Russ Racop.

She said hello to her mom who was in her usual chair in front of the TV, normally she’d yell out a hello to her brother too, but she had seen his bike at Mike’s when she drove past. The brunette girl dropped her purse and jacket on the kitchen table before taking a seat in the chair next to her mom. While she was at work some people she graduated with had invited her to a party, and sure she could sneak out, but her mom wasn’t ever super strict; she just needed a little buttering up. “So, I saw a new cat at the diner, it’s a calico one and it really likes our fries.”

Valerie was only 4 years old when her Mom found out she was pregnant with Dustin and told their family the news by putting her in a t-shirt that said “big sister”. Of course little Val doesn’t remember any of it but there was photo proof of the day and her wearing it in one of the many photo albums her Mom had around the house. Their parents had been pretty nervous about having two kids, not only were they worried they wouldn’t be able to handle it, they were worried the two of them wouldn’t have a good relationship.

Luckily for them that never really seemed to be a problem. From the day they brought Dustin home from the hospital Valerie, who had turned 5 a month before Dustin was born, was attached to her baby brother. She was always trying to help feed him bottles and would even go into his room at night to sleep on the floor next to him in his crib. And as they got older nothing much seemed to change, Valerie was always looking out for Dustin at home and in school, making sure no one was bullying him or anything else.

She tried really hard not to be the overprotective, no fun big sister and rather a normal amount of protective, really fun big sister. Of course, over the years they’ve had their fights like siblings do but after a few hours they would go back to normal, one of them always knocking on the other's door to ask if they wanted to hang out. Growing up Val had always been a troublemaker though she tried her hardest in school to appease her parents.

They put her into music and dance classes though she hated dance, she liked music however she didn’t like playing the classical instruments, she preferred guitars. When they moved to Hawkins during Val’s freshman year she wasn’t thrilled. She hadn’t had many friends back in her hometown, but she had a few people who she had been close with since elementary school.

The outcast of a teenager had thought she’d had it bad with bullies at her old school but at Hawkins High it was even worse. She was harassed all throughout the day, in class and in the halls. Some girls had even trapped her in one of the bathroom stalls at one point. After weeks of “accidents” in the cafeteria caused by her peers she finally just started packing her own lunch so she could get a break. She had found an old picnic bench out behind the school and started going there to eat in peace and read a book, or listen to music on her walkman.

She had been doing that for a few days when a brown eyed boy with a buzz cut found her, claiming that it was his special spot. Val had been bullied most of her life, yes, but it had never stopped her from running her mouth. So, she told him she didn’t see his name on it. Of course, he actually had carved his name onto the table, the ‘Eddie’ clear as day now that he had pointed it out to her. She had cursed under her breath before she pulled her pocketknife out and started carving her name beside his. “There,” she had told him, “Now it’s our table.”

After he got over what she had just done, the two of them started talking and quickly realized how much they had in common. After that the table truly became their table, and even after Valerie had graduated, she would still meet Eddie there every day for lunch. Of course, having lunch behind the school only kept the two of them away from High School Hell for an hour a day but it was worth it, especially when the two of them started smoking on their breaks.

Eddie introduced her to his friends and DnD, something she wasn’t sure about at first but eventually fell in love with. As for the rest of school, Valerie wasn’t a bad student, she had always done decently good in school despite everything. She even joined band where she would meet Robin a year or so later. Her home life wasn’t the best of course, her parents put so much pressure on both of their kids but because Val was the oldest she was often left to look after her brother.

When their dad passed away during Val’s junior year however things started to change, their mom became more distant, busying herself with her job and cats while her kids, especially Val, struggled to stay afloat. She became angrier than she had already been at the world, which in some ways was a good thing as it made her finally stand up to the people who were constantly badgering her and her friends, but it also made her lose the passion she once had for the things she loved doing.

Dustin was probably doing the best out of everyone; he had a good group of friends and though they were bullied often like she was he never seemed to let it diminish his personality. And because she cared so much about her little brother and had always been incredibly protective of him, she considered his friends, who he was incredibly close with, to be little brothers too. When Will disappeared, before Val knew about the Upside Down, she was sure some all too human monster had taken off with him.

That thought, and the thought that they might come for more children in Hawkins, had made it very hard for the older Henderson to sleep, or even concentrate on anything else so she’d started investigating on her own. Of course she’d also dragged Eddie out with her a few times but on this particular night she knew he had a big test in the morning, and the Munson boy was already doing bad enough in school that she didn’t wanna bother him with her insistent worrying.

She’d gone by herself, driving her father’s old Jeep down to where Will’s bike was found and parked it somewhere safe. Val wasn’t sure how long she’d been in the woods for but just as she’d decided to start going home she’d caught a glimpse of ‘Castle Byers’, the fort she’d heard Will talk about frequently. The brunette made her way over to it and found it empty and completely untouched since the Byers boy had been there last. She’d sat there for a little while, looking at the various things the young boy had deemed worthy enough to be in his castle.

She wasn’t sure how much time had passed when she’d heard a faint voice, a whispering in the distance that sounded like someone quietly singing ‘Should I Stay or Should I Go’. She’d immediately known it was Will and started calling out for him, running around the woods to figure out where the sound was coming from. She had stopped to listen for it again when she’d heard a twig snap behind her, and before she could register what was happening, she was being dragged by her leg into the Upside Down by the Demogorgon.

She still isn’t sure how, but she’d managed to get free and get away. It was while she was running that she had found the person she had been looking for this whole time. The two of them stayed together after that and protected each other. Now, Val would never leave Will for long, too afraid that the monster would find him, but in effort to keep herself sane she started going to the Munson trailer. She couldn’t see Eddie, of course, but all of his things were there and if he was home, she could faintly hear his voice, listen to him sing and play his guitar.

She’d done the same thing with her own home, listening to Dustin and her mom as they went on about their day. Though sometimes listening hurt more than it helped as she could hear Eddie and Dustin crying, begging, praying that she’d come home. She could hear her mother telling Dustin that she was probably fine, that Val had probably just ran away from home as her Jeep was gone. But her brother knew better, he knew that she’d have never left him behind, at least not without an explanation, and Eddie knew that too.

When her and Will finally made it out of the Upside Down it took quite some time before the nightmares stopped, and even now she has them occasionally, and she was able to look at the scars on her body. She was constantly having to remind herself that they were okay, they got out and it was all over now. She hadn’t thought for a second that they’d have to continue to deal with the Upside Down for the next two years and would lose people they cared about. And a part of her didn’t want to have to deal with it anymore, a part of her wanted to run as far away from Hawkins as she possibly could but her brother and his friends were insistent on staying and fighting for their town and because of them so was she.

After graduation she decided to put off college, at least until everything settled down, so she got a job at a diner/bar as a waitress in the daytime and a bartender in the evenings. It was a good job, she made decent money and was able to give the kids free food sometimes during the day and was able to let Eddie and his band play there, occasionally singing with them or playing the guitar whenever the place wasn’t too busy.

Anyone who was around Valerie for more than five minutes knew the Henderson girl didn’t follow the rules. She’d been breaking them since she was a kid, and in school she was frequently found in detention. She had convinced Robin to come to an old warehouse building near her house that she liked to hang out at sometimes just to get away. Val couldn’t help the slight laugh she let out when Robin mentioned the various “do not enter” signs on the building. There were a lot of them, honestly, scattered in random places as if that would keep people from entering. Though there were less and less as the years went by, as teenagers stole them to hang on their bedroom doors or in their rooms, Val having been one of them. Once they were inside the building Val turned to Robin, giving her a smile. “It’s fine, Ro, I promise. I come here all the time.”

Val hadn’t planned to go out but now that the offer was there, she realized it would be a great way to get her mind off of everything. Valerie wasn’t exactly sure who had told Isaac she was upset and normally she would probably be mad for someone telling her business but right now she was to upset to care. The brunette didn’t let just anyone in, but she had met someone a few months ago, someone who she really cared for that she thought felt the same way, but they had ended things with her just a few days ago. No reasoning, no explanation, and not even in person, they’d called her and broke her heart over the phone. Pretty much no one knew besides her siblings and Eddie though she knew the boys had an issue with keeping things to themselves sometimes. The Henderson girl let out a soft sigh before opening the door and moving aside to let Isaac into the house, shutting the door behind him once he was inside.
