Send “There’s two of you?!” to see my muse with themselves from another verse! // @ofthepuzzle

"Yugi!" Oh great. Because this couldn't get any worse. "Don't be a fool! There's only one Seto Kaiba, and that's me, not this cheap fake!"
Tumblr media
"That's funny, I was about to say the exact same thing! I guess you're not a completely worthless copy." The Orichalcos-corrupted duplicate scoffed. "You realize there's only one way to settle this, don't you? Duel me! The winner earns the right to duel Yugi, and the loser disappears!"
Tumblr media
"Hah! This will be the easiest duel of my life!" Someone should probably stop them.

“Duelists and fans of all ages-- Welcome to the KaibaCorp Duel Dome!”
The lights had gone low. Fog had filled the floor of the stadium, and a blue spotlight shone down, a bit right of the center. Out of the fog, a square-shaped platform rose up, revealing Seto Kaiba standing on top of it to the entire crowd. It was a packed house-- of course it was. The moment Kaiba started advertising that the King of Games himself would be in attendance, suddenly everyone was a lot more interested in this Minor League tournament. That’s all this was supposed to be, in theory-- just a standard tournament for amateur duelists, playing for a cash prize.
“My name is Seto Kaiba, CEO of KaibaCorp and host of many tournaments just like this one. But more than that, I’m a duelist!” At that word, he turned, raising his hand and clenching it into a fist. “As a duelist, it’s my ultimate goal to become the greatest in the entire world, and hone my deck to perfection, and take down any challenge that comes my way! So, you might be asking yourselves, why someone like me would be stepping down from the pro leagues to put on a tournament like this? Why put this much spectacle for amateurs, when I could be gathering the best of the best? ... Well, first of all, I like to put on a show.” He turned around, making his coat swish behind him. “As if I’d ever put on a mediocre tournament.
“But more importantly-- this tournament is no different than Battle City, or Duelist Kingdom! I look out at all the duelists here, and I see a future King of Games. I’m not just talking about the competitors-- It could be someone in the audience today, cheering on a duelist they admire from the stands!” He pointed, looking towards one of the TV cameras. “It could be someone watching from home, inspired to pick up a Duel Disk and start playing, so next time they can be playing on a stage like this! That’s why I’m here today-- to shine a light on new talent, and push it to be its best! Because perfection isn’t born, it’s built. Sometimes over years, sometimes over an entire lifetime. The only key is to never give up the fight!”
A small pause, the crowd applauding. He waited until it calmed down. “Ah, but why am I talking about the future King of Games...” He murmured, almost like he was saying it to himself-- the spotlight on him slowly shifted from blue to purple. “To all the competitors here today-- Give it your best, because the strongest duelists in the world will be watching! Now, let the tournament begin!”
The platform lowered. The plan was for Yugi to make his speech right before the semi-finals, effectively dangling the King of Games’ presence like a carrot on a stick. That’d boost the ratings, encourage people to keep watching in the hopes of seeing Yugi! In the meantime, Kaiba had set Yugi up in a nice luxury box above the crowd, where he’d have a great view of all the duels going on. (And a bunch of drinks and snacks, of course.) As the first pair was getting ready, Kaiba headed there himself. Knocking on the door twice, then entering without waiting.
Tumblr media
“Good, you’re here,” he commented, almost sounding relieved. “After going to all this trouble, it would’ve been a shame if you didn’t show up. I hope you didn't get hastled for too many autographs along the way." He approached the other, standing beside him, though not sitting down in any of the cushy seats in the room. "You have that speech ready, right?” He had something written as a backup just in case, though nothing Kaiba wrote would sound very... Yugi-like. So, hopefully Yugi hadn’t forgotten.

Kaiba didn't react at all, at first. Stayed in his typical pose, standing tall with his arms crossed. Maybe it would look like he hadn't noticed Yugi was there, but no-- he knew. Anyone would, the King of Games wasn't a hard presence to miss, seeing a flash of multicolored hair out of the corner of his eye. His gaze shifted to Yugi, trying to spot if the other duelist was looking at him.
Should he say anything?
Was there any point to? If Yugi wanted something from him, he would just ask for it, not stand there and wait for Kaiba to prompt him. But then if that's the case, why was he here? He couldn't think of another explanation. Kaiba wasn't exactly the sort of person that most people could just approach and hang out with, by design. Yugi wasn't most people, though. Never had been, from the moment they'd met. It spoke volumes that they stood next to each other now, with Yugi so much shorter, yet Kaiba always felt they were on even footing. (More than that. Yugi stood higher than him.)
Hm. Kaiba uncrossed his arms, putting one on his hip and letting the other (the one closer to Yugi) dangle at his side. "What is it you do when you're not dueling?" He finally asked, out of the blue.

OK BUT THIS HAD TO BE DONE--
Yami, Dark Magician, Dark Paladin
Wed, Bed, Behead.
Tumblr media
"Please tell me this is a joke," he sighs. At least they're human holograms. Well... humanoid, anyway. Paladin has green skin, so he might be an alien. "Beheading Dark Paladin is the easy one, I'd love nothing more than to watch it get slashed to ribbons, just like what it did to my Blue-Eyes in Battle City!
Then there's the other two. I guess I'll... wed Yugi since he's a real person. I'm not even sure the press would be surprised if I announced I'm marrying a Duel Monsters hologram, but I don't think I'd ever live that one down. So that leaves..." Blech. He's not saying that out loud.

“Kaiba,” he voices, dropping a hand down to his hip as he takes a step to the side, turning towards the latter, “there is something I want to tell you.” He appears rather calm for what he plans to say next. A smile over pristine facial features, a sense of certainty expands from within. “Make whatever out of this if you will. I have great admiration for you. And it goes way beyond dueling. Despite our rival status, you always raise me up when I’d fallen. You breathe confidence in me when I need it the most. Even in the most despairing and hopeless of times. There’s something about you that helps me find myself. My worth, my strength. I realize there are no limits to anything. Everything is possible. And that’s why I need you… I want you by my side. I know I wouldn’t be the same without you…” There’s a moment of pause and he hums, his smile never fading. “Remember it.”

Tumblr media
Yugi had a talent for saying things that make Kaiba want to yell and scream, just as much as he had a knack for rendering him speechless. He stared, trying to decipher the meaning behind these words, why they were being said, what wasn't being spoken-- Which wasn't the smartest thing to do when the words at face-value were more than enough to process.
The fact is, this is kind of what he'd wanted to hear.
There was a part of Kaiba that ached to mean something. A part that could never be content with fading into the background, shying away from the spotlight, giving something important to the world that everyone would look at and say, 'That's amazing, and Seto Kaiba did it.' He never saw that part of himself as weak, it only pushed him forward, striving to greater and greater heights, seeking perfection and the infinite progress that was expected of him by so many. Only recently... He wasn't sure when it started, but only recently had that desire gave way to a sickening weakness that he tried to stomp out: That he wanted to mean something, to Yugi.
What sort of rival could only win against his opponent by threatening to throw himself off a roof, after all? Not that Kaiba regretted that really, given the circumstances, but the fact stood. Kaiba was just yet another person that Yugi defeated on the regular, and while he made Yugi work for the victory, all that mattered was the outcome. It ate at him, for so many reasons. For his own pride, of course-- he needed to be the best at this game he cared so much about. He craved victory, like all humans did. And he craved to mean something. To keep giving Yugi reason to accept his challenges, and to fight at his hardest. Deep down, he knew Yugi didn't have any reason to. It's why he concocted things like Battle City, to force it.
And here Yugi was, telling him, in no uncertain terms, that it was already true. He didn't have to fight for it.
It was strange, to hear Yugi describe him, so polar opposite from what Kaiba had always assumed he looked like through Yugi's eyes.
He's just staring. Say something, you idiot.
Kaiba bowed his head, closing his eyes, trying to regain enough composure to make words come. "... You flatter me." Even saying that much made Kaiba feel his pulse in his throat. Why is it all so hard!? He's no good at speeches, when there's no anger behind it. "Do you even understand what you're saying? You're... ridiculous."
The insult was so half-hearted that it barely was one. In fact it sounded more endearing. "... There's something I never told you directly," Kaiba spoke, opening his eyes again. He didn't know how to express such sentiments as powerfully as Yugi did, so he fell back on the only way he did know, to connect with others. "Exodia. I spent countless hours trying to figure out how you did it-- how you defeated me with Exodia. For awhile there, I had myself convinced it was one of the worst things that ever happened to me." He glanced up, looking past Yugi at the wall, loosely folding his arms. "... But that's old news. The fact is, I wouldn't have it any other way. I don't know where I'd be now, if the outcome of that duel was any different. Battle City never would've happened, I'm sure of that. Probably more, there's no use dwelling on it." The Duel Disks might never've been created, actually. Not in the same way, or with the same motivations behind it.
"Don't get the wrong idea," Kaiba's eye-contact returned, tipping his chin up slightly. "I don't enjoy losing to you. And I will be the one to defeat you. What I'm trying to say is... that I don't regret meeting you." I don't want to imagine a version of my life where you don't exist.

😴😨 // I know you have a lot stuff from me but-- B')
send me 😴 to see how your muse appears in my muse’s GOOD DREAMS // @ofthepuzzle
Tumblr media
Like a light at the end of the tunnel. A figure in the doorway, or waiting for him at the top of the stairs. Good dream or bad, Yami almost always appears to block Kaiba's path to something, waiting. Telling him the fate of the world is at stake, and he can't let Kaiba pass through. Or simply smirking all smug, and saying he wants to put Kaiba's skills to the test. And of course, they duel.
Dreams with Yami center around him completely, in fact Yami rarely shows up as part of a larger group, despite how often Kaiba's seen him with the rest of the Nerd Herd. The good ones are intense, high-energy, them both taunting, control of the duel switching back and forth. Of course it's still a dream, so Kaiba's imagined duels don't usually make sense-- cards that don't exist pop up a lot, Yami's deck varies wildly from dream to dream. (He used the XYZ machines once, and revealed that he could have his Dark Magician ride on top of XYZ-Dragon Cannon to shoot dark magic attacks directly at Kaiba's lifepoints.)
The hallmark of a 'good' dream with Yami is one where Kaiba wins their duel. Yami flip-flops between completely devastated, lamenting over how he could've let this happen-- to just as confident and impenetrable as he was at the start. (Depends on how Kaiba's feeling that day, really.) But one fact remains the same, no matter what: As Kaiba walks by, there's the promise of a next time. It's not over. Yami will be back, to take that title back, so Kaiba better be ready for it! And that's... comforting, in a strange way.
Softer moments have started creeping in. As simple as Yami offering a handshake before the duel begins, and Kaiba accepting it, or some other contact that Kaiba would have a much harder time accepting in the real world.
send me 😨 to see how your muse appears in my muse’s NIGHTMARES
Tumblr media
Poison and antidote, these two. As high as the emotional highs of the good dreams, the lows are just as intense.
Losing the duel against Yami. Losing more than the duel. Yami calling him nothing, calling him pitiful-- saying that he's no longer worthy of being his rival. Saying he was never worthy, that Yami always just saw Kaiba as a waste of time. The fire's gone. The fire was never there to begin with. Just a sad, weak little man that needed to be put in his place.
He's dreamt of getting Mind Crush'd again. Kaiba's mind can't really mimic what the Mind Crush actually did the first time around, so it just comes up with something bad. Being rendered unable to move, losing his sight and only seeing static, going completely numb and faceplanting onto the floor.
Ori!Kaiba, in all irony, has nightmares of winning the duel against Yami and forced to watch as the Seal takes his soul. Knowing that outcome would've been real, and knowing what it feels like, after Kaiba had lost his own soul to Dartz, makes it all too easy to imagine.

Normally, he should be fixated on the duel that’s unravelling before him. But he’s not the one who’s taking over at the moment. He’s letting Yugi take the wheel for a moment while he’s floating about in ghost form. Eyes peeking to the side, towards something— or rather someone. Yugi soon realizes Yami has wandered off a tad further away for as much as the connection with the Millennium Puzzle would allow him. Staying afloat right beside Kaiba, elevated just enough to his head-level, Yami continues his little staring session. Looks like he’s a bit more interested in discovering new little details on Kaiba’s appearance instead of analyzing the duel. Luckily for him Yugi is onto that. Simultaneously, Yugi finds what is going on at the other end amusing. Kaiba shouldn’t feel Yami’s presence, right? Even if he did, he’d most likely assume it’s just the wind. That is also why Yami has felt a little bolder to approach just a little closer while still maintaining a fair distance.
@ofthepuzzle
Kaiba always kept his gaze fixed on a duel, whenever it was happening. This was his favorite game of course, he couldn't help but overanalyze every move the players made, think way too hard about what he'd do in the same situation. He rarely gave commentary out loud, except to Mokuba, if he had a question about why someone played a certain card, or who had better odds of winning. (Anyone else's questions were ignored. If the Nerd Herd was there, they could bicker amongst themselves. He wasn't going to waste his breath correcting them.)
In this case, it was pretty obvious to him who was going to win. One player was using a bunch of rare and powerful cards, but he wasn't using them properly. The other actually had the skills to back up her cards-- while the duel was looking close right now, Kaiba had no doubt she would come out on top.
Of course, he had no awareness he was being watched. Or at least, that anyone was so close to him, analyzing his appearance-- the supernatural often escaped his notice, just as often as it flew directly into his face. He was wearing that white suit again, with the blue dress shirt and tie. (Perhaps Yami could tell Kaiba was wearing make-up. It was subtle, expected if he was going to be on TV-- some concealer for under his eyes, a little bit of contouring.)
The player with the rare cards had summoned yet another one, sending an onslaught of attacks to wipe out all of the others' monsters. But it hadn't been enough-- 100 lifepoints left. "Woah! If she doesn't do something soon, that guy's gonna win for sure next turn!" Mokuba blurted.
Seto simply smirked. "There won't be a next turn," he said, confident, turning on his heel. "She set up her victory last turn. All she has to do is--"
Tumblr media
He was walking towards the doors that lead backstage, but froze up after taking just two steps. That was... cold. Almost unnaturally. It's like he just walked on top of a hole or a vent that was blasting ice-cold air, but looking behind him, there was nothing of the sort. Because, unknowingly, he'd just walked straight through Yami.
Odd. Kaiba started to reach out, intending to swipe his hand in the air, before he noticed Mokuba looking and thought better of it. "What were you saying, Seto?" Mokuba asked.
"Hm. Nothing," Kaiba murmured. "Watch the rest of the duel. I'm going to check if the heat is working properly." Because clearly something must be faulty, if it was causing random cold patches.
He caught a glimpse of Yugi staring at him, looking way too amused as Kaiba passed by. What did he think was so funny? He gave a small, suspicious glare before trying to brush it off.

Steps beside him while holding a phone, "I believe we've not exchanged numbers. It might make it easier this way to... contact each other regarding business inquiries." Totally only for that.
@ofthepuzzle

Oh? So Yugi had a cell phone of his own now. That's good, so they wouldn't have another adventure like Battle City, having to wait around while the other duelist used a payphone. (Hah, maybe Yugi got one because of that whole fiasco.) "Good point," he agreed, taking out his phone. There was a number listed on his business cards, but naturally that lead to his secretary. He didn't give out his personal cell number to just anyone.
He waited for the other duelist to recite his number, entering it into his phone. It was immediately saved-- tempting to label it something passive-aggressive like 'heart of the cards' or 'fake pharaoh', but he kept it straightforward. In lieu of reciting his own number out loud, he sent a text then and there. "There. I've just texted you, that should give you my number."

"..." Was he really going to have to admit the circumstances that forced him to use Dark Magician? It's embarrassing that Kaiba couldn't do such a thing on his own power, that he just-so-happened to land in a situation where his opponent locked down his deck, unless Kaiba played a powerful spellcaster. What are the odds of that? Yugi would probably call it destiny. Blech.
He cleared his throat and folded his arms, looking annoyed. "You're the best duelist," he stated, suspiciously calm, giving a few seconds of pause. That should satisfy the dare. "For now."

There is an attempt to stand the closest as fairly possible beside Kaiba. Yami lightly raises his hand, moving it to linger next to Kaiba’s— just a teeny bit. But that ends up in their bracers clanking into each other. He instantly withdraws his hand and places it on his hip and turns his head to the other side, playing it cool… All while looking petulant.
@ofthepuzzle
Tumblr media
While Kaiba usually stood around with his arms crossed, looking like his typical grumpy self, for once he had them at his sides. He wasn't sure when Yami had decided to walk over-- that was a little unusual, wasn't it? For all the times the two of them had dueled as opponents, as teammates, or worked together, there was usually an air of only doing it all when forced. Of course, that was Kaiba's doing. He did often make a point of standing far away from Yugi and his friends, not wanting to listen to them. It's not like either of them made an effort to bridge the gap, really...
... Until now, it seemed. Yami standing beside him, Kaiba allowing it. Pretending he didn't notice, actually, after the initial glance. He kept waiting for Yami to say something, expecting that he came over for a reason, but it didn't seem to come.
Clank.
Kaiba instinctively moved his hand away, hearing something knock into his wrist, looking back towards Yami. Not even looking in his direction.
Did he just...?
Surely it was an accident. Even so, Kaiba stared at the back of Yami's head for longer than he really should've, slowly lowering his arm back to his side. What's wrong with him? Yami was just standing too close, so he bumped his arm by mistake. And now he was embarrassed. It wasn't anything more than that. Why try to make it anything more than that?
He turned his gaze forward again. Blushing, just a little bit.
