"HE DON'T SAY NUTHIN', HE JUST KEEPS ROLLING ALONG," Toronto Star. March 17, 1943. Page 6. ---- A tank labelled OLD MAN RUSSIA rolls forward blasting and conquering all before it. Onlookers carrying documents marked POST WAR PLANS and DESIGNS FOR A NEW WORLD look aghast and confused. "RUSS INFANTRY AMBUSH SOLID WALL OF TANKS DESTROY 71 WITH FIRE," Toronto Star. May 20, 1942. Page 1. ---- Timoshenko's Army Reports Important New Gains in Kharkov Battle - Germans Drive to South to Ease Soviet Pressure ---- SOVIET A.A. GUNNER KULIER AND 8TH VICTIM --- Moscow, May 20 - Thousands of tanks and hundreds of thousands of men fought in an infernal cauldron of destruction before Kharkov today. The German high command was throwing new masses of machines and men into the battle in a vain attempt to stop the Russian advance. Tank fought tank and man fought man in such a tangle that planes, engaged in a war of their own over the smoke-clouded front, could not intervene. The Moscow radio said Hitler had hurled every available tank in the battle which blazed into new fury at strategic points along the whole 1,800-mile Russian front. Field Marshal Fedor von Bock's German forces were reported "in flight" along the 100-mile front before Kharkov. In one sector German tanks attacked in a solid wall against the Russian centre and flanks, Russian infantrymen, holding their fire, took the shock of the attack and, from a thousand foxholes, leaped out with hand grenades.

“Russians Use Air Sledges to Attack Nazis’ Rear,” Kingston Whig-Standard. March 26, 1942. Page 10. ---- This radiophoto from Moscow shows a Red Army detachment in air sledges operating in the rear of the German forces. The air sledge is more or less of an innovation of the Russian Army that is proving highly practical in the current winter warfare. Notice how the men are deployed with a machine-gunner covering them.

"The Fighting Men Of Russia As Seen Through A Soviet Camera," Toronto Star. April 26, 1943. Page 19. ---- AT THE ALERT guarding the sky over Moscow are these soldiers shown at their anti-aircraft post. Kept busy elsewhere in Russia and weakened by constant hammering of the R.A.F., the Luftwaffe has made no attempt to drop bombs on Moscow for many months. This and other pictures on this page are from the Soviet documentary film "Russians at war."
RUSSIAN HERO is Sergt. Korol who received the Order of the Red Star for his part in shooting down two Junkers and five Messerschmitt fighters.
STREET FIGHTERS have played a glorious part in the battle for Russia's cities as the Soviet army pushed back the Nazis. Typical street fighter in this Russian soldier, sighting his rifle.
A SPECIAL PAGE in the history of Russia's glorious fight in this war will be devoted to the guerrillas who, without uniforms or rank, are risking their lives to harass the enemy. Here an informal funeral service is held for a dead guerrilla. Note the wooden grave marker.

“The Situation in War-Torn Russia,” Ottawa Journal. June 30, 1941. Page 2. --- N.Y. Times Map, from Wide World. ---- Aabo (1) has suffered heavily from Russian air raids on Finland. In the regions centering on Shavli (2), Vilna (I), and Baranovichi (4) the Soviet armies continued to retreat before the force of the Germans who claim capture of Minsk (5) but made fierce occasional counter-attacks on their way to new defensive positions and reported their bombers had inflicted heavy losses upon Nazi tank columns. In the Minsk area German airmen raided Borisov, Bobruisk, and Motilev. Farther south the Russians reported they had inflicted a severe defeat upon the Nazis near Luck (6). German-Rumanian forces had crossed the Pruth at Seulenil (7). but said they had been hurled back across the river. Today the Huns claim to have captured Lwow and the Nazis are making a drive on Kiev.

“Supreme Sacrifice of Russian Mother,” Sault Star. April 9, 1942. Page 6. ---- This Moscow caption identifies her as Evdoka Scsnovskaya, a resident of the village of Krasnaya Slobodka, ruins of which you see in background. She proved that mother love is something greater than bombs, shells, fire or sword. Red army troopers found her body vainly attempting to protect her child from the death that rained from the sky. There is no greater heroism on land, sea, or in the air.
