In August 1918, Congress amended the Selective Service Act to expand the age range of men eligible for the draft. This cartoon of September 11, 1918, reminded men of the registration deadline.

Russia and Iran are de facto allies. Russia buys drones from Iran which are then used to kill Ukrainian civilians. The Houthi rebels in Yemen are backed by Iran.
So it's puzzling that the Houthis attacked a Russian oil tanker. And it's the second time they've done this. Russia and the Houthis are indirect allies.
Some Russian commentators are delighted with unrest in the Middle East because it draws attention away from Russia's illegal invasion of Ukraine. But they can't be happy that the Houthis are disrupting Russia's oil trade.
My impression is that the Houthis just aren't very bright. They claim that they are attacking shipping connected to Israel, but few ships they've attacked have anything to do with Israel. This disruption of international sea lanes has already prompted a military response.
A Kremlin propagandist has boasted how Houthi attacks in the Red Sea have helped Russia by diverting Western attention away from the war in Ukraine. However, one of his country's oil tankers got caught up in hostilities when it was mistakenly fired upon, 90 nautical miles southeast of Yemen's port city of Aden, by the Yemeni militants. [ ... ] Hawkish Russian politician Aleksey Zhuravlyov told 60 Minutes on the Russia 1 channel how the situation in the Red Sea is "totally beneficial for us" because "everybody is forgetting about Ukraine." "Go ahead, the West," said Zhuravlyov, chairman of the Rodina (Motherland) political party, citing Western help in Ukraine's fight in the war started by Moscow at a time of tensions in the Red Sea. "Are you ready to wage a bunch of wars?" Zhuravlyov added in a clip shared by Russia watcher Julia Davis on X, formerly Twitter. [ ... ] However, Zhuravlyov's comments come amid a report that Houthi militants fired a missile that landed within 1,500 feet of a vessel carrying Russian oil. It was sailing 90 nautical miles southeast of Yemen's port city of Aden, Reuters said.
Russia does have a habit of starting things without worrying much about the consequences.
The war in the Middle East that Zhuravlyov is so pleased with is into its 100th day. Russia's three-day "special operation" in Ukraine is now 690 days old.
I don't think Ukraine had anything to do with the following, however it may be war related. A 70,000 square meter warehouse for the online retailer Wildberries was destroyed by fire. The warehouse is in a suburb of St. Petersburg and it has been rumored that police had raided the building looking for migrants who could be conscripted into Putin's failing army. The migrants may have retaliated by torching the structure.
youtube
This is not exactly the first peculiar large fire in Russia since the start of Putin's invasion. Russia has a terrible fire safety record and it's probable that some firefighters are reservists who are now dodging Ukrainian fire rather than fighting fires at home.

People acting like being a conscientious objector is a heroic choice is baffling to me. You mean I either have to keep my head down and suffer through prison for a while or risk getting smoked fighting in the ass-end of bumfuck to murder innocent people for my government?? Prison is the hard choice for you?
Something wrong with y'all fr.

After President Vladimir Putin announced this week that Russia was conscripting some 300,000 reservists and military veterans to reinforce its war effort in Ukraine, international flights out of Russian cities quickly sold out. This latest wave of Russia’s exodus included Anton Shalaev, a 38-year-old senior manager at an IT company, and 15 colleagues.
On less than a day’s notice, these men of military age all left their relatively comfortable lives in downtown Moscow to fly to Yerevan, the capital of Armenia. Because of Putin’s war, Shalaev tossed a book, an iPad, and a laptop in a backpack and got out of Dodge.
Shalaev and his co-workers are true tech geeks, producers of high-value computer games. They represent their country’s brightest and best, members of a tech elite that was the economic foundation of Russia’s new middle class. In a last selfie from Moscow, Shalaev brandished a coffee mug that bore the slogan, not today, satan.
Anna Nemtsova: Why didn’t you want to be drafted to fight in Ukraine?
Anton Shalaev: On the day Putin declared the war, I knew I would never fight on behalf of this new Nazi Reich. They are my personal enemies: mercenaries who steal my country from me, occupy foreign territories, and kill innocent people. Putin’s army commanders have had plenty of time to turn down their contracts; instead, they are recruiting more cannon fodder now.
So I chose to help Ukrainians suffering from this horror—pay for shelters in Kyiv with cryptocurrency and write antiwar posts on social media. To encourage Russians at home, I said: “Guys, look, I am writing this from Moscow.”
Nemtsova: What was your escape like?
Shalaev: Unlike state-owned companies such as Yandex or the Mail.ru Group, which are making their employees stay, we were independent of government funding, so we made an immediate decision to relocate.
The atmosphere at passport control in the airport was quiet but tense; men waiting for the flight around me were exchanging alerted glances. I had bought my ticket right before the announcement—we were already hearing rumors of the mobilization—so it cost me only about $300. But my colleagues got their tickets the next day, and they cost more than $1,000.
The departure was super stressful. The border guards took each of my friends aside into a small room, interrogated them, asked if they had ever served in the military, and if not, why not. And you know that type of sly border official making their little jokes: “Aha, you are leaving on the day of conscription.” Of course, they checked whether our names were in the database for the mobilization.
Nemtsova: Did you do military service, in fact, when you turned 18?
Shalaev: No, I entered the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, which had a military department, so that released me from the service obligation. I studied political science, and dreamed of becoming a Russian diplomat—Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov was a graduate there. For a long time, I considered myself a Russian patriot, ready to serve.
When I enrolled in college, in 2001, there was some ideological diversity: We had a neo-Stalinist who taught us about how “Josef” ruled with an iron fist, but the next class would be with a professor telling us about liberal values. Today, the school recruits students for the secret services. And lately, I heard that the dean has urged students to call for Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, to surrender.
Nemtsova: What do you think of the Kremlin’s decision making?
Shalaev: A few old men and an army of zombies are leading us to hell. I say that because people around me in Russia behaved as if they had been bitten by a zombie, dragging my entire country into a dreadful war. All I saw was Russian loser husbands beating their wives, while the entire rotting house of the state system has turned my people into an army of the dead.
They are my enemies.
Nemtsova: What do you know of the situation in Ukraine?
Shalaev: I constantly follow the war news in Ukraine—and I seek out the best, most objective analysts. My main sources on the atrocities are Ukrainian refugees from cities bombed by Russian forces.
I realize that I would rather go to prison than go to fight against the Ukrainian army. I openly embrace my antiwar position. I urge my social-media followers to donate to Ukrainians. This entire war is a crime against humanity.

The Roman legions were probably the main reason the Roman Empire was so successful. These incredibly organized military units marched all over the ancient world and remained in key colonies of the empire long after the last battle was fought. Roman legions, however, developed over time and as they evolved they became finely tuned parts of the war machine.

I've touched on this before but I'd like to apply some critical thinking to the idea that Hamas use human shields/hide among civilians and this is a uniquely terrible thing they do for the evulz.
Gaza has been under military occupation for nearly 60 years, since Israel invaded during the Six Days War. Getting in or out has been very difficult since it was blockaded in 2007; it has been described as the world's largest open-air prison. It has no formal military. History tells us that under occupation, guerilla warfare is inevitable.
With this in mind, what would a Hamas that didn't "use human shields" look like? A Hamas that satisfied notions of honour and the rules of war? Would it have identifiable military buildings? Parades in uniform? How? Where? Gaza is under constant military observation. They would be immediately destroyed. There aren't any bits that aren't full of civilians, and the civilians can't go anywhere because Israel won't let them out.
Secondly, Israel operates a system of compulsory military conscription at 18. A very courageous young man is currently serving his second term in military prison for refusing it. He has said that most young people and even deserters in the same prison find the idea of refusing military service on ideological grounds completely incomprehensible. It does not compute.
Is this not using human shields? They are not volunteers. They did not in any sense have a free and informed choice. They are 18-year-olds who have been taught no alternatives and face military prison if they refuse. After their compulsory service is over, they remain liable to recall until they're 40. Nearly every Israeli is a current, former or future soldier in the IDF. Maybe that's why the IDF say "no uninvolved civilians"? In Israel, there literally aren't. It's a terrible way to live, knowing that your childhood ends in warfare or prison. It's not how a functional state works.

Dates and Numbers - Fourth Wing
I am currently rereading The Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros, and can say, I am way down the rabbit hole. As I was rereading the first few chapters, I really focused on world building and foreshadowing that I missed the first time around. I started to question, what time a year is all this happening in? How is the quadrant organized? So, I did the math:
Timeline/Dates
On page 155, We learn that Threshing happens on October 1st every year. I used this as the base line for the following numbers, please note that these are approximates. On page 47, violet says that they will face the Gauntlet "when the leaves turn colors in two months." This alone places the Gauntlet in late September... but how late?
Reading further on page 47, we learn that if they pass the Gauntlet, all the cadets immediately go to presentation. Two Days later is Threshing. This means the Gauntlet is on September 28th. That means, looking back 2 months, that conscription day is on August 4th.
Page 47, for context, is set during the very first death scroll reading. Meaning Violet has been a cadet for less than 24 hours at this point.
Quadrant Organization:
Right off the bat, we learn that Basgiath War College is home to four quadrants: Scribe, Infantry, Healers, and, of course, the Riders. We know very little on the Healers quadrant, but even less on the Infantry Quadrant. (If I was a betting man, I would wager we will learn more about both in the following books.) We know a little bit on the Scribes, their values, and their mission through Violets training and her father. However, we learned quite a bit about the riders quadrant.
On page 32 we see the first mention of Squads, Sections, and Wings from Dain Aetos. (Notice how he doesn't explain it, just expects Rhiannon to know- Jerk.) Anyway, On page 40, Violet being the sweet soul she is, explains to Rhiannon, and us, that there are four wings. Each wing has three sections and each section has 3 squads. The number of cadets in each squad depends on the number of candidates that made it across the parapet and the cadets that are alive from previous years.
Using this year's number of cadets (new and returning,) there are between 15 and 16 cadets in each squad. That means that there are 540 to 576 cadets, in total, in the riders quadrant. Within each section there are 45 to 48 cadets, and within each wing there are 135 to 144 cadets.
There are 4 wingleaders - with a senior wingleader for the quadrant (Page 40), - there are 12 section leaders (three Flame, three Claw, and three tail, to be exact (page 40),) and there are 36 squad leaders.
That was a lot of information, so let me know if you have any questions. I will continue to update as I continue my reread.

Speech given by college student Raymond Anthony Mungo at the Boston Common for an anti-Vietnam draft rally, 10/16/1967:
“I'm here today, and this is a very historic day, to go with you . . .I say again, I have nothing more to do with the Selective Service System.”
File Unit: Boston Common, 1928 - 1976
Series: Precedent Case Files, 1928 - 1976
Record Group 118: Records of U.S. Attorneys, 1821 - 1994
Transcription:
RAY MUNGO:  I am going to talk very briefly.  I'm not exactly sure why I'm here to speak to you because I can't speak as elegantly as either of the two gentlemen who preceded me, and I'm not black, and I'm embarrassed by the fact that nobody black is up here; and I'm not working class, even though my parents are working class, because I obviously went to college, you know.  But I have learned a few things since I started going to college.
When I started going to college, the Civil Rights movement was the big thing and I thought that was great because there were these people down South pounding people and beating people and I assumed that was very un-American.  The American character was to be peaceful, to be non-violent, to be just and I assumed that south was the festering sore in American society.  That is why I started going to college.
In 1964, three men died in Philadelphia, Mississippi.  Their trials were just coming up this week in Mississippi.  Their murderers will no doubt be acquitted.  In 1965, I was aware of the war in Vietnam.  [following underlined in red ink:] I burned my draft card on the 20th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima.  In 1967, I'm here today, and this is a very historic day, to go with you to the Arlington Street Church to say that I have nothing more to do against, and I say again, I have nothing more to do with the Selective Service System. [end underlining]  Now I think this country is getting very close to being a fascist state and I'm afraid, I'm deeply afraid, and I'm afraid of the draft too and you know you are too because it affects all of our lives.  I am eligible for the draft and so are you, even though I am in college.  It affects people's career positions.  It affects the way you look at things.  I do not believe, for example, that it's a coincidence that the United States Army, that the same United States Army that is destroying people in Vietnam, can be destroying people in Detroit.  I think that it's connected.  I think people who go to fight and kill people find it easier to come back here and kill people, and I think killing

people is wrong, categorically in any situation, because people are all that we have.  People are it, man.  You know!
For the fascism that we have in the United States of America is not like the German fascism.  It is not like World War II or the Atomic.  It is the fascism of the $100-a-plate diners in San Antonio, Texas, who can sit and mildly, smugly, applaud the President on his (word inaudible) when he makes statements that indicate that he's mad, that he is out of touch with reality, and it is the fascism of - yes, it is the fascism of BU student and Harvard University student and Brandeis University students who will not stand up and say anything about the war.  It is the fascism of people who continue to pay the taxes, and people who continue to register for the draft because they do not want to stir up any trouble.
I was in (place inaudible) with NICK EGGLESTON  (Phonetic).  I met a girl that was 23 years old.  She had 200 shrapnel wounds in her body because she was teaching in elementary school when it was bombed again and again.  I saw pictures of women whose children were born with metal pieces of lead in their faces that went through the woman's womb before birth.  I saw people that had their skin seared off by this war in Vietnam, and I've seen black guys in the United States that had their heads bashed in, and I think we’re all going to end up in the can sooner or later if we take a moral stand on this issue, so I'm willing to do it now.
I might be crazy.  Why am I subjecting myself to the possibility of jail?  Why do I not sit and accept the arguments that may political activists have offered me, that it is more effective to stay out of jail and play along with the system?  Because you can't revolutionize the system and you can't change a country that is rotten to the core unless you make a complete break.  I cannot object to American materialism if I depend on American affluence and if I'm afraid of jail.  I am not afraid of jail.  I'm afraid of killing people and being killed and I am afraid that this whole planet is going up in smoke if we don't do something about it immediately.  Jail is not to be feared.  Jail is an honorable alternative to this war in Vietnam.
[page 3]
30.
BS 25-25171
I feel - Eugene Bent (Phonetic) said in 1918, "I am accused of being against the war. I admit it.  I am happy to be against the war.  I will be against all wars".  And then HENRY DAVID THOREAU said, considerably before that when he was in jail, somebody came up to him and said, "Why are you in there".  He turns around and says, "Why are you out there, baby?"
Because a society - in a society which is (word inaudible) unjustly, the true place for a just man is also a prison.  EDNA ST. VINCENT MILLAY said in the closing lines of a poem "Am I a spy in the land of the living that I should deliver men to death.  Though the password and plans of our city are safe with me, never through me shall you be overcome."  [following underlined in red:] If resisting the Government in the United States of America, which is killing people abroad and killing people at home, black people and yellow people and poor people, if that is treason, I want to be a traitor.  I want to be nothing but a traitor.  It's the only honorable thing to be, and I want as many of you as are ready to take this step today to come with me and a lot of other people down to the Arlington Street Church to tell the United States Government together, today, that you are men, and not tools, that you have rights and you have dignity and you belong to the human race.  That's all I'm asking you to do.
If you believe in killing people, it is crazy to register with the - if you don't believe in killing people, it's crazy to pay your taxes.  It's crazy!  Don't give them a nickel!  If you don't believe in killing people, it's crazy to register for the draft.  You've got to make a break now.  Please come with us today. [end underlining]

True, we have no conscription; that is, men are not usually forced to enlist in the army, but we have developed a far more exacting and rigid force -- necessity.

'Can you cook dinner?' shouted a heckler. 'Yes! Can you drive a coach and four?' replied Constance Markievicz (1868-1927) on her campaign for women's votes driving her carriage with four matched grey horses. The daughter of an Arctic explorer in an Anglo-Irish family, she fought against the British occupation of Ireland and was sentenced to death, though released in 1917 under a general amnesty. Arrested again the following year for protesting conscription in the First World War, she stood for Sinn Féin and took 66 per cent of the vote from prison, and refused to take her seat – then she was in any case, still imprisoned.

And remember, these conscripts are overwhelmingly and disproportionately from ethnic minorities and religious regions of Russia. Ethnic minorities have been hugely over represented as cannon fodder by the Kremlin.

#OTD in 1918 – Sinn Féin, the Irish Volunteers, Cumann na mBan and the Gaelic League were all proclaimed as illegal organisations by the Lord Lieutenant, Viscount French.
The proclamation stated that the proscribed organisations are dangerous and a ‘grave menace’ designed to ‘terrorise the peaceful and law-abiding subjects of His Majesty in Ireland’. It goes on to say that these associations ‘encourage and aid persons to commit crimes and promote and incite to acts of violence and intimidation and interfere with the administration of the law and disturb the…
