max has always loved animals . in fact , she can't really remember a time where she didn't have a pet : as a child , oftentimes her only supervision was that of the loyal family dog . she loved cats too , their discerning affection & baleful eyes , but these days she doesn't get as many chances to say hello to them . the well - behaved golden retriever that seems permanently by her side is no threat to the feline species , but they don't really tend to stick around and find out .

max  was  raised  on  horror ,    much  to  her  mother’s  chagrin .   after  all ,    a  little  girl  has  no  business  seeing  so  much  blood ,   guts ,   monsters  &  machetes .   her  text  copy  of  the  shining  had  gotten  so  worn  the  spine  was  peeling  &  cracking  apart ,    but  the  braille  copy  in  her  hands  is  pristine  &  new .   having  to  learn  a  new  version  of  the  alphabet  has  been  exceedingly  frustrating ,    but  she’s  struggled  through  two  chapters  &  is  beginning  to  feel  more  optimistic  about  the  whole  thing .   ‘  horror  novels  starting  to  lose  their  appeal  since  we  basically  live  in  one ?  ’    dark  amusement  lilts  her  words  as  fingertips  pause  their  journey  across  the  page .   ‘  i  don’t  think  i’ve  ever  actually  read  a  judy  blume  novel .   aren’t  they  just ,   like ,   less  violent and more boring  versions  of  carrie ?  ’

a  question  she  asks  herself  on  the  daily :    rewinding  the  tape  in  her  mind ,    replaying  &  replaying  until  the  film  falls  apart .   where  did  she  misstep ?   did  she  ever  stand  a  chance ,    or  was  she  doomed  from  the  start ?   lips  purse  slightly  in  an  attempt  to  keep  the  lower  from  trembling  &  betraying  the  riptide  beneath  the  surface .   ‘  that’s  a  dangerous  game  to  play ,  ’    she  mutters ,    absently  reaching  to  scratch  diana’s  ears .   (  it’s  more  for  max’s  sake  than  the  dog’s ,    but  that’s  neither  here  nor  there .  )   ‘  there’s  no  point  in  thinking  about  that  stuff .   it’s  over .   it  happened .   there’s  nothing  left  to  do  but  accept  it  and  move  on .  ’    the  words  sound  hollow  even  to  her  own  ears .
