their door swung open, hitting the wall with a bang! first the toddlers ran through, screaming, followed by the older kids. the last in was hunji, carrying his now two-year-old sister, hayun, he gently closed the door behind him, a toothless smile on his face. the girls were dropping their stuff off on the couch and the table. he cleared his throat.      “girls!” he shouted. they all looked to him but still spoke among themselves. “i have a project for you all-” he set littlest hayun down. he went to the pantry and where food should be, instead, was old plastic grocery bags.
all the girls slowly migrated to the kitchen table, except their preteen, haneul. she tried to sneak away to study. hunji looked up, and with one glare, haneul made her way to the table with the rest of her siblings.      “now,” hunji sat with a grunt, “there is a- uh- a bidding going on. there is an auction, it’ll be in the town later this week. right now, we need to make a basket of candies and fun things. if someone buys this basket, the money will go to a charity!”      the girls had various reactions, mostly the little ones just excited about the word candy. they took charge and before hunji could say, they were opening bags. they got out a bowl, the popcorn, throwing it all about the table. hana lead the aesthetic charge while the little girls just had fun pulling out various treats and talking about how much they liked them.      hunji sat back, arms crossed, watching them work together putting the basket in place. he did all the hard work, getting the candy from his workplace, and now had an activity for the kids too! his toothless grin turned bright and shiny. his cheeks flushed a perfect red. his chest puffed with a deep breath, then relaxed back into his seat.      “BIG BROTHER!!!!” hwanju leapt at him. she crashed into his leg.      he groaned, “what?”      “I WANT THIS!” she shook a rectangle in his face. he cringed and grabbed it from her. shaking his head, he looked at the treat, already knowing what he was going to have to tell her. he took a deep breath, then looked at her little face.      “hwanju,” he spoke gently, a chaotic mix of voices behind his, “we can’t eat this. what if someone wants to buy it and give the money to sick animals?”      hwanju’s face sadly smushed. she knew he was right, but, it looked so good! hunji laughed and petted her head.      “it’s okay, hwanju, we can go get chocolate some other time, okay? for now, let’s give this to someone else.”      he stood up and put it back in the basket. his choice of placement was quickly correct by hana. she insisted that “if it looks more pleasing to the eye, more people will try to buy it!” he laughed, and when he sat back down, hwanju had gone back to playing and basket-ing.      ten minutes by, with a surprisingly lack of fighting, the girls were ready to present their well-made, well-loved basket. hunji took it with a smile and promised it would make it safey to the auction.
five. hundred. five? five. five?!      hunji swallowed. his eyes bulged. he looked like a dumb pug.      “f-five?” he asked again. he was not certain how much five hundred dollars was, but this. . . this.      when he got a chance, he quickly checked how much won five hundred american dollars was. when he saw, he gasped. he was right about one thing- it was a lot.      “i-i do not, i’m sorry, i-i don’t? understand? is it true?”      of course, it was.      on the walk home, his head hung. when he blinked, his eyes would hurt and water. then, minutes later, would happen again. not once did his jaw manage to fully shut. five. hundred?? six. hundred. thousand!!      the rest of the evening went as well as it usually did. some crying, some screaming, but always five good-nights and three good-night kisses. it was hunji’s turn to sleep, eventually, and when he did crawl into bed, his dry eyes could not close.      six. hundred. thousand. hundred thousand??      he made it up in his mind, he was so certain, that it was going to give maybe twenty american dollars to some random charity. no, this was much more. it meant more. it was far more important than that!      his eyes became wet. his nose stung. he tried to keep himself quiet with a pillow. he breathed unsteadily, hiccupping and gasping silently.      i finally did something good.      he sobbed.
