JIWON nursed a stray kitten back to health when he was in middle school !! in retrospect, that was the moment he fell in love with animals and wanted to pursue his original career of veterinarian. now, if given the chance, he’ll foster animals but, alas, his current apartment doesn’t allow pets ( that doesn’t stop him from trying to adopt every stray he happens across, though ).

YOUNGSOO can no longer paint portraits !! he used to be more than exceptional at painting portraits, both self and not, but ever since he moved for college and started having these weird dreams, he no longer can find the right style and level of skill to paint a person’s features down. it annoys him to no end.

JUNSEO sometimes wishes he still lived in korea !! there are days when he feels immensely alone, when his stutter feels like a barrier and a weight dragging him down, when he just misses his parents and childhood home. those days he withdraws into himself and becomes mute, and it often takes an unhealthy amount of alcohol to feel comfortable again in his own skin to speak.

AOYUN wonders what happened to his parents !! he’s bothered his grandparents constantly when he was younger, to tell him why he was left with them as opposed to raised by mother and father. his older cousins used to mock him and tell stories about his parents being part of the triads, or being swallowed whole by a whale, and he used to believe every story under the sun.

HOJIN has another tattoo, alongside the susuwatari curling up his ankle !! just what exactly that tattoo is, i still don’t know - but i do know it’s floral and found in between his shoulderblades. it’ll be his second, and probably last, tattoo, as he can’t really sit still long enough for more bigger, detailed pieces to be inked.

KYUNGMIN learns recipes ridiculously quickly !! he’s always had a strong knack for learning, and memorizing details, which is why he’s being constantly encouraged to apply to the architect firm he interns at as soon as possible. give him a new recipe, and he’ll nail it pretty much after the third try.

HOSUNG had a lot of ‘mundane’ dreams when he was younger !! he wanted to be a famous musician, wanted to be an astronaut, the president, a lawyer, a police officer, a prince. he knew he’d never really get to do any of those things, as he was set up from birth to take over his father’s thriving business - it’s why he doesn’t have a college degree, as who needs one when good old nepotism exists.

DAEHO still visits his parents !! though a little more estranged, he still is fiercely protective and fiercely loyal to his parents, his father especially. though ask him why he has any ties to family and he’ll say he doesn’t, that he doesn’t want to deal with their affairs should he piss off the wrong person and they catch wind he has a family. that’s a half truth, at best.

MINJUN wants to learn how to play the bass guitar and the piano !! he doesn’t quite want to learn enough instruments to form a one man band, but he thinks he can draw enough of a crowd during busks to eventually, finally, rent out a shitty one room somewhere if he can play more than guitar. it’s his first and most immediate goal.

CHUNYU is so used to people talking down on him that many wonder if he has emotions at all !! a lot of his parents’ friends are disappointed in the fact the philanthropic foundation they own will not be taken over by their only son, and he has heard nearly his entire life snide comments. he’s just developed a rather thick skin when going to charity galas, exactly for that reason.

KWANGSU wants absolutely zero to do with the father he once idolized !! his father was a dirty lawyer, taking bribes from underground members in order to keep his family safe and, while noble in some minor respect, it led to his only son being kidnapped and, really, it’s so much easier to ignore the man who is the cause of his anxiety.

HYUNJUN alternates between wireless and wired earplugs !! whenever he’s streaming, he wears his headset and the left earplug of a wired set - the headset is for gaming, the earplug is for music. however, everywhere else, he wears wireless plugs, always the left one, always on full volume. he even goes to sleep wearing the wireless plugs, and it’s a miracle he’s only lost one so far.

INSU has anywhere from 15-20 plastic lighters scattered around his apartment and in his pockets, alongside about 7 matchbooks, and 2 zippos ( which he keeps tucked away in his tiny end table in his tiny room ) !! it’s not quite a collecting habit, but he just buys a plastic lighter whenever he stops at a drugstore, and has accumulated quite a bunch as he never has completed used one. it keeps his hands busy when his head is too loud, always having a lighter nearby.

JIWON 💬: his first ever date was in middle school !! it was with his first love, and they went on a bike ride after school to the local convenience store, where they bought all the snacks they could both want and shared it together on the sidewalk a couple of blocks down. 💗: yes !! his first love, though maybe an innocent love, is one he stands by even now, years later.

YOUNGSOO 💬: sometime in high school !! specifically, towards the end when he was beginning to come into himself more and was less of a wallflower, silent type and more of the proud, boastful person he is today ! it wasn’t a very enjoyable date, in his opinion, as he’s pretty sure it was only a thing out of pity but oh well. 💗: he doesn’t think so !! youngsoo’s idea of love is intertwined heavily with the idea that love = sex and, because he’s asexual, he’s never felt that he’s been in love. and there hasn’t been very many Notable people in his past to maybe double think and wonder if he was in love.

JUNSEO 💬: junseo doesn’t really remember it but according to his parents, he went on a cute date with a neighbor girl in elementary school !! he vaguely remembers both his parents and her parents cooing over them together, and both families going on an outing to the park, and he thinks that was the date but ? to be determined. 💗: yes. he currently is !! very happily in love, even if it took a while to get there, and was a bumpy, uncertain road for too long. but he’s happy, and in love !

AOYUN 💬: aoyun didn’t start dating until college, and he distinctly remembers his first date !! it was actually with a girl a GE, and they went to the movies before spending all night talking in the park near campus together. he still occasionally talks to her, as they share similar fields of interest ! 💗: love is... a finicky concept for him !! mostly because he is more cosmic than he is human, and it’s simply difficult for him to sift through what is natural awe and adoration for humans, and what is genuine affection. but he thinks he’s as close to love as the universe can be in love with something human.

HOJIN 💬: bold of you to assume hojin knows what is considered a date and isn’t !! no but seriously, hojin has asked out plenty of people, and has been asked out by plenty of people, from as young as middle school, and he’s never been able to tell when it was romantic and when it was platonic ! even if he was the one asking the person out, it’s all a hot mess of emotions, really. 💗: once again, bold of you to assume hojin knows how to distinguish his emotions !! the concept of love is super amorphous and indistinct, and the various types of love are near interchangeable for him. maybe he has been, maybe he is, maybe he hasn’t, maybe he isn’t, whom knows ? certainly not him !

KYUNGMIN 💬: his first ever date is actually with his respective partner in their respective versions of his main verse !! kyungmin has never been very... romantic, and has never taken initiative to ask someone out, nor has someone really shown a lot of interest in him. it’s only very recently that he’s started dating. 💗: yes, he currently is !! again, with his respective partner in their respective version of his main verse, but he is very much in love !

HOSUNG 💬: similar to kyungmin, hosung has never dated before his partner !! he was a very asocial kid, alienated by his peers because of differences in wealth status and simply because he used to think he was above them all. it’s only until he met his partner that dates were a thing. 💗: yes !! he is very much in love with his partner, even if he grumbles and bemoans. they even have a cat together, which is big, and domestic, and proof

DAEHO 💬: sometime in high school !! he was a fairly likeable, and somewhat popular, kid in middle and high school, as he was very happy go lucky, very much a sunshiney kinda guy ( before reality hit and he became what he is now ). it was a cliche dinner date, split between them, and it ended pretty quickly because she liked his laughter and smile, and he just liked her face. 💗: that is..... highly debatable !! daeho doesn’t think he’s gotten past more than the honeymoon phase of a new relationship, or the first date butterflies. but proof that he is in love is gift giving, and becoming softer at the edges where he’s made himself sharp.

MINJUN 💬: sometime around when he started busking, so around 16/17 !! someone from the crowd asked him out immediately after his performance, and he was so flustered and shocked that he said yes without thinking twice. it wasn’t a bad date, but he felt it ended badly when he apologized a million times over and told his date he said yes out of surprise/shock 💗: he doesn’t know what love is, and he’s pretty sure he hasn’t been before ?? at least he hasn’t been with someone for very long to think of love as an option, or the next step !

CHUNYU 💬: his first ever date, unofficial though it may be, was to his parents’ first charity gala they hosted together after chunyu was old enough to run around by himself without getting into trouble !! his date, though, was a friend of his parents’ son, who was five years older and hid half the time. they only were stuck together because of their parents, and chunyu hated every last minute of it. 💗: he has been in love before, and has had his heart broken by that love !! he’s only ever been in love once, and will only ever be in love once as, though he broke up with his partner, life has a funny way of saying they belong together - or at least that’s his opinion.

KWANGSU 💬: he’s been on plenty of study dates, starting the first year of high school !! kwangsu wouldn’t count those as official, romantic dates, as all they ever did was study together. but that’s the earliest memory of a date he can remember ! 💗: he hasn’t !! too busy in school, too busy with anxiety, simply too busy to fall in love, unfortunately. but, lowest of keys, love has always been such a beautiful concept to him, and he wants to experience love ! especially young love, as he fears sometimes that he’s throwing his life away by studying, studying, studying !

HYUNJUN 💬: first ever date was to an arcade with the cutest girl in his high school math class !! in retrospect, it was a terrible location choice, as hyunjun may or may not have spent a lot of time focused on playing than on having fun with her. but he must’ve done something right along the way, since she kissed him goodbye and they dated for a year. 💗: he doesn’t think he has !! love is... perhaps not finicky, like to aoyun, nor amorphous like hojin, but it’s not something he actively thinks about and seeks out and expects in any new relationship ? but when he does fall in love, it’ll slowly creep up on him, and he’ll wake up one day, breathe in slow, and say ‘wow’ because, wow, he’s in love, isn’t he ?

INSU 💬: does.... does his first client count ?? because his first client did take him out to a fancy restaurant to try and butter him up, which didn’t really work but whatever, a free meal and money ? he’ll take any day. 💗: HAH !! insu doesn’t think he’s capable of love, plain and simple, and he knows he’s always kept people at a distance, thanks in part to parents and thanks in part to being... odd, in his words. he doesn’t think he’ll ever fall in love, too.

JIWON can hold his breath for a little less than three minutes !! it’s the one thing he always used to show off as a kid, and sometimes will still do if he’s anywhere in the vicinity of a pool.

YOUNGSOO gets motion sickness !! it’s only during long car drives that he gets sick, as he hates being cramped up in small spaces. he’s pretty sure he doesn’t get sick on boats but he’s never been on one and doesn’t plan to be on one just to test it out.

JUNSEO, despite living in san francisco, has never been to pride !! which is a shame because he really wants to go, if only for the parade and to see such open demonstrations of love and happiness.

AOYUN has once slept in the observatory he works at !! no horrible or worrisome reason, he was just so lost in stargazing and doing graduate class work that, before he knew it, the sun was coming up. he’s not allowed the night shift most often because of this reason.

HOJIN has approximately three different japanese language textbooks and has not looked past the introduction in all three !! despite wanting to eventually apply to studio ghibli or open up his own studio, he’s yet to put in real effort to making that dream substantial by learning the language or looking into the effort of opening his own studio. it’s mostly because his attention span ? nonexistent with his overactive imagination.

KYUNGMIN has fallen into a pattern of returning home after it gets dark !! he’s often held up at the architecture firm he’s interning at, taking on opportunities or being utilized for his skill of accurately determining dimensions of a room. he doesn’t mind it one bit, as it’s a nice routine he enjoys.

HOSUNG is sorta friends with the friendly old lady across his apartment !! he wouldn’t have ever met her, if not for her giving him his current cat after her grandson brought it in demanding to adopt it. she regularly checks up on him and makes sure he has at least one homecooked meal in his fridge, which is always gives to any friend who drops by.

DAEHO once knocked a kid out in middle school !! completely unintentionally, as he was a hyperactive, energetic kid and was way too excited to be playing basketball afterschool. that kid ended up being his closest friend, until the kid moved away at the end of high school.

MINJUN, when he can, sends some money to the orphanage he grew up in !! he hasn’t stepped foot in its walls since he left but he is grateful for the men and women who ran it, and he wants to make sure it keeps providing a home for kids who need it.

CHUNYU has at least fifteen different cameras in his apartment !! some of them are the cheap plastic ones gifted by friends during birthdays or graduations ( all of which are completely filled ), a few of them are polaroids, and the rest are SLR cameras. the one he carries around all the time is a nikon d850, gifted by his parents two year ago.

KWANGSU drinks anywhere from four to six cups of coffee in one day !! he is.. a serious caffeine addict and cannot get through his long day without at least four cups of coffee. his all time record was eight cups, and that nearly sent him to the hospital when it triggered an anxiety attack.

HYUNJUN always streams on ‘major’ american holidays, such as fourth of july, halloween, thanksgiving, and christmas !! he doesn’t really celebrate the holidays with his dad now that his mom is gone so he uses those days and respective vacation days from school to get in some extra streaming.

INSU absolutely loves bonfires !! there’s something about the beach at night with a roaring fire and a couple of friends ( or no friends at all ) that settles that something permanently anxious and antsy in his chest that no drugs or alcohol can settle. he always makes sure to have at least one bonfire during the summer.

untruths

1.     Accept that they are both infinite and finite ; accept that they are burning brilliance compacted into human form, into a singularity on the precipice of everything and standing before nothing. Accept and embrace when the weight of the universe is ever expanding and that there is no more room left to expand. Accept that stars get lonely too, and that gentleness is the salve from everything.

2.     Reassure that their burning brilliance is not faded behind light pollution, that the wishes casted upon them have not stolen their gleam with each hopeful gaze and whispered dream. Reassure that colors cannot be used to describe them, that words are not adequate when they are the universe, when they are more than the universe. Tell them that though they may bleed a void’s entirety, that black is only the result of infinite colors mixing together, that they are everything even when they feel like nothing.

3.     Stars flicker and wink and twinkle, drowned by night and saved by day. Tell yourself that this is only a natural thing, as breathing and bleeding is, that the worry you feel opening endless and maw-wide in your chest is only a temporary fear, a blinking worry, a twinkle to match the twinkles in the ink sky above. It will pass, and the twinkle will burn brighter.

4.     Home is forever and nothing, everything and endless. Home is so far away, within grasp yet slipping between fumbling fingers like grains of sand sliding through hourglass. Know that the yearning for something that is forever outside of reach is only human ; know that only humans will yearn and wish and desire for what they can never quite have ; know you are painfully, painstakingly human, even when home shines inferno bright within you and above you.

5.     You are too much, you are not enough, you are everything the universe has to offer compacted into a pitiful excuse of a human. You are too much, you are too much, you are just enough. Breathe, drag yourself from the tick tocking of your traitorous mind. Breathe, tell yourself that you are enough, with your endlessness swirling through indigo horizons and pansy memories. Breathe, breathe, breathe.

6.     Rigidity is something to be fought against, is it not. Rigidity and strict steps are things to embrace only when it is suiting, when it is beneficial. Rigidity and desperation for a semblance of normalcy when you are so painfully alone, when you are a person masqueraded. Draw outside of the lines, follow the pen’s flow, step an inch outside and find comfort and reassurance that loneliness isn’t forever.

7.     Void’s null, null void, black dripping down thoughts and whispering something wicked. Loneliness has never felt so cold and unfamiliar as it does when you cannot close eyes, when you cannot breathe past the primal fear that coats mind with ice and rock and nothing. Hiding behind a wall is a useless, useless thing when you are the problem, when the problem is you. Stop hiding, stop hiding, stop hiding, and learn to trust, to breathe, to be.

8.     Pointless, pathetic, a human dressed plain and boring when starfire lights veins white gold and burning silver. Pathetic, pointless, a star who is not a star but a thing, an ant. Skyward a reminder that you are alone, that you have been alone, that you will be alone. That you have lost loyalty, that you have lost everyone, that you are you and no longer them. Pointless, pathetic. What is the purpose of the universe if not to expand, to grow, to be? What is your purpose.

9.     Five points. No, spherical. No, luminous. No, nothing ; no, anything ; no, everything. Unwanted, unwanted, you are imperfection made human. Notes are taken and burned up in your tongue. Wishes are granted for little more than passing glance. Remember, remember, nothing is more human than the heart too big for your body. 10.  The stars are overwhelming things, are they not ? Gaseous giants, burning points, imperfections in skin. What better way to sand away imperfection than to move, to follow the trail of stars as they trek their way through the night sky. What better way to believe that imperfections are perfect lies than to drown yourself in humanity’s inhumanity. What better way to drown, overwhelmed and underwhelmed and full to the brim, than with humanity’s hurt.

11.  The burden upon a star’s shoulders is the weight of the universe, expanding and ceaseless and unending. The burden upon them is made to crush, to kill, to smother and silence, until the star fizzles out and nothing remains but the echo of pain, the reminder of failure. The burden is too much on humanity’s shoulders, on human’s shoulders, and yet it is only necessary to take on more, more, more. Little star, burdened and weighed down, on a blazing path to nothing.

12.  Incomplete, incomplete, something is missing and something belongs there but what, what, what? Can you drown that missing home, that missing family, that missing kin with static? Should you sail through life like a star so far above, ignorant of anything that isn’t important? Can you, should you, you will, you can, you must. Remind yourself to anchor, remind yourself that incompleteness is still a whole.

13.  Black hole. The void. The abyss. What are you? The odd one out, the unwanted, the star that drags into its gravity minuscule things and majuscule things. The one who is a danger. The one who does not belong. What are you? Black hole. The void. The abyss. The one who is always missing, always just in the wrong place, just a few years too late. What are you? A star death waiting to happen, over and over and over.

world building ; names

this is less of a head canon than it is a note on the thirteens’ current names ( and any future names ) ---

you may notice that some of them share a syllable in their names - hosung and hojin, kwangsu and insu, minjun and hyunjun. while, at first glance, it’s nothing out of the ordinary, sharing syllables is a reflection of the interconnection they share as the thirteen cosmos. the few times they have been reincarnated in the past, names and other minor details as such have been shared among the thirteen, be it in the form of family names or given names.

the first time they were reincarnated, all thirteen shared a family name, despite not being born in the same family. after that, some only shared a family name while others shared given names. this pattern continued until now, the most recent reincarnation, wherein only a few share syllables.

with each reincarnation, they lose that interconnection a little bit more, as they become a little more human and a little less cosmic each time. eventually, should they continue to reincarnate, they will go from sharing syllables to sharing nothing in common, not even ethnicity.

hc ; the thirteen

all thirteen, regardless of status, run uncomfortably warmer than the average person. it’s a mundane fact that further connects them as cosmic entities, and is often overlooked as something that connects the thirteen, as running a bit warmer than usual isn’t all that striking.

but the reason behind their hotter than average temperature is that all thirteen have stars burning beneath their skin ; for those that are aware, the presence of stars also comes with pressure and aches and constant discomfort, as the stars present in their being do not belong there and are, thus, trying to expand outwards.

the four who are aware ( jiwon, aoyun, kyungmin, and daeho ) deal with this side effect in varying ways, ranging from frequent massages as jiwon deals to self-mutilation as daeho deals. these methods are often temporary, however.

a defining physical trait that all thirteen share, regardless of scars or other physical features/modifications, is a birthmark ; all thirteen have a cluster of dots on their left hipbone, which forms a vague shape of a generic star ( ie. the common five point star ).

the cluster of dots are, overall, the same in size and in exact location for all thirteen ; however, pattern, arrangement, color, number of dots, and individual dot size varies for each individual.

all thirteen cosmos, whether currently aware or not, have an ailment ( whether physical, mental, psychological, etc., or some combination thereof ) of their true heritage, which varies from individual to individual. it is, in some way or form, a way to either trigger the lost memories that they have, or a simple manifestation of their cosmic heritage.

for some of the thirteen, these ailments will be the cause/were the cause of their becoming aware ; for some, the ailments have nothing to do with becoming aware and their awareness manifests due to external circumstances ; for others, they will never become aware, regardless of the ailment they have and external circumstances.

below the cut are the list of ailments by cosmos, and whether or not the ailments will trigger a status change.

SOO JIWON, THE FIRST - suffered seizures throughout childhood into adolescence, one of which triggered his memories, at age 11, after which the seizures lessened until he rarely, if ever, has them now.

LEE YOUNGSOO, THE SECOND - suffers from multiple sclerosis, in which youngsoo will be symptom free up until his late 20s as well as migraines ; these ailments will not cause a status change.

OH JUNSEO, THE THIRD - the only one whose ailment occurred much later and was not something he was born with - suffers from neurogenic stuttering and selective mutism, as brought upon by a car crash at age 19. this did not cause a status change and will not cause one either.

MA AOYUN, THE FOURTH - developed OCD ( specifically a combination of checking and symmetry/orderliness ) around 8/9 years old that he still deals with today, and that flares up during times of extreme stress especially. this did not trigger his change in status, though was a step towards becoming aware.

IM HOJIN, THE FIFTH - unofficially diagnosed with fantasy prone personality ( FPP ), or a very overactive imagination. when combined with lack of proper diet and sleep, visual hallucinations can occur as well. while these visual hallucinations won’t trigger a status change, they will lessen once hojin becomes aware ( which will be due to external circumstances ).

BAE KYUNGMIN, THE SIXTH - was diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum at age 6 and is still considered being on the spectrum despite becoming aware. this diagnosis was not the cause of kyungmin’s status change.

SUN HOSUNG, THE SEVENTH - suffers from chronic nightmares in the forms of memories from his time as a cosmos, beginning from age 15/16 and continuing until now. if given the attention and time, these memories/nightmares will eventually trigger a status change but, given hosung’s aversion to them, will not likely happen in the near future.

MUN DAEHO, THE EIGHTH - diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder at age 19 ( which is when the shift from being happy about being a cosmic entity to being malcontent occurred ) ; is considered a high-functioning sociopath. this diagnosis did not trigger his status change, which occurred at age 15.

SEONG MINJUN, THE NINTH - diagnosed with dyslexia when he was seven ; minjun will not experience a status change due to this diagnosis, but this diagnosis is one step towards his status change.

BAO CHUNYU, THE TENTH - currently diagnosed with sickle cell anemia and, in the near future, will be diagnosed with fibromyalgia. neither of these diagnoses would trigger a status change, which will come from an external factor.

CHOI KWANGSU, THE ELEVENTH - developed acute stress disorder, which developed after experiencing a weekend-long kidnapping when he was ten ( and that he blocked out ). this disorders will not trigger a status change.

PARK HYUNJUN, THE TWELFTH - suffers from both tinnitus and synesthesia, the latter in which music is heavily associated with color. neither of these will trigger a status change, and a status change is unlikely to happen in the near future.

KIM INSU, THE THIRTEENTH - also diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder, though diagnosed at age 16 ; unlike daeho, insu is only considered a sociopath. insu is one of the very few who will not remember what he is, regardless of this personality disorder or the various substances he abuses.

hc ; the thirteen

a change in status, as defined for the thirteen, is the shift from being completely unaware of their cosmic heritage to becoming aware, through varying means and measures.

how an unaware cosmos becomes aware varies wildly and not so wildly for all thirteen, ranging from something profound as a near death experience to something as simple as repeated, ingrained habits. because of this fact, there’s no certain way of predicting how any of the unaware cosmos will become aware, and there’s definitely no certain way of predicting which of them will become aware, when they will become aware, or even if they will ever become aware in their lifetime.

in the same vein, becoming aware does not mean immediately reverting back to how he was as a cosmic entity ; there are varying levels of ‘awareness’, so to speak, in the sense that the four who are currently aware are reflective of their personalities as cosmic beings in levels.

the one who is most ‘aware’ ( ie. the one who is most like how all thirteen were like before they were reincarnated and before they became human ) is kyungmin ; his mannerisms, thought processes, actions and reactions and him as an individual, are the closest reflections of his personality and him as a cosmic entity, as well as the closest reflection of all thirteen as cosmos. this is, predominantly, a result of his cosmic manifestion.

followed closely behind is daeho, surprisingly ; given he was the second to become aware, he’s had a longer time to figure out what it means to be a cosmic entity and, as such, adapt to it. how he truly is ( that is, how he is when he isn’t pretending to be the human he was ) is how he was when he was a cosmic entity. however, he’s not on the same level as kyungmin because he’s still very much human, perhaps more human that kyungmin is, due to his personal connection and feelings towards being unable to be the cosmos he was meant to be.

aoyun is next, closer more towards a human than a cosmic entity ; he’s very much human but there are instances in which is true nature and heritage slip through. because he spends the most out of all thirteen staring up at the sky, staring up at home, he could be considered more cosmic than daeho ; however, because of his human nature and interest and excitement, he is considerably less cosmic than daeho.

jiwon is, surprisingly, the least like his original cosmic personality ; despite becoming aware first, jiwon has retained a particularly human personality and mindset. however, this mindset could be considered a reflection of his original mindset as a cosmic entity, as he’s arguably the only one of the four who knows most of the intricacies and specifications and extent of being a cosmos.
