||  █ ▌— now this is interesting. of all the people he had expected to see here, solomon would not have reached the top of his list. he shouldn’t be surprised, he supposes. and he isn’t upset. solomon is very interesting, uses smiles to mask something deeper in a way that satan finds almost uncomfortable in its familiarity ( but only almost ).

it’s only natural that satan approaches, and if he’s still confused about his surroundings and seeking any familiar face, well, that’s nobody’s business but his own. he smiles at solomon, the expression coming easily to his face.

||  █ ▌— the sentiment is straightforward, satan has to admit, but he can’t help complicating it anyway as he picks it apart in his head. ‘divide and rule’ or ‘divide to rule,’ though most translate it in the modern day as ‘divide and conquer,’ which technically moves the strategy back a few steps, from post-conquest to pre- and therefore changes the meaning entirely.

there’s a lot to think about in it. he wonders if it’s not lucifer’s influence that has him dismissing it out of hand. lord diavolo’s latest fascination has been with union, however strange, and he wonders when he started taking the future demon king’s ideals to heart.

it’s not that he doesn’t understand the words themselves, but he doesn’t understand what lucifer stands to gain from them. he scoffs, turns away. is this progress? is this a step back on the progress he and his brother had already made? he isn’t sure.

||  █ ▌— it’s deeply unjust, satan thinks, upon catching sight of his brother. that it would be lucifer that he sees here, in this place ( so strange, so exciting and strange ) but he also allows, within his mind, that there’s a certain inevitability to seeing lucifer first. if all things are fated, then there’s a sort of humour in it, at least.

that doesn’t make it less irritating, of course, but satan clamps down on his irritation lest it fester into anger and approaches his brother. ❝ so, ❞ he begins, frowning. ❝ you, too, huh? is it driving you crazy, not being as powerful here as you are back home? ❞
