Most of her is tucked securely behind the guqing she no longer wears slung across her back, but holds between her arms. The girl looks to be TRULY conflicted - round little nose wrinkled, teeth sinking into pink lip as she considers. Voice is small, hesitant, "But Zongzhu says - " and she colors, in spite of herself, brows furrowing. "Well, I guess Zongzhu isn't here..." Peers at him cautiously with LARGE, GLIMMERING EYES, skittish as a creature at the edge of the forest ready to bolt for cover at any moment. "And I guess...you don't look like a BAD person..."

A little strange, perhaps, but - hesitates only a moment longer, looking around, the pink on her cheek deepening. And then Xueqing motions for him to come closer. Voice is small and a little troubled as she whispers - "I don't know if you know anything about musical cultivation, but I think THIS SCORE IS WRONG."

Palm presses ABRUPTLY over vibrating strings, the sound stopping immediately after - and she looks up from her instrument like a startled deer, little face dyed RED. "...Sorry, sorry, I didn’t know anyone else was...around...” The red deepens, and she chews her lip. Of course, it’s the MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT - who’d be around? Except then, she’s also playing guqin in the middle of nowhere in the middle of the night - equally infuriating, since she could be waking everyone up. Or perhaps she might be suspected of more nefarious actions - like charming everyone again in their sleep, or something to that effect. “...I just - I don’t really know what to do, anymore, with...everything,” Explains, voice small. She’d calmed and put the littler ones who call her shijie to bed quickly, and left the adults to their quiet crying and discussions of where to go next - if their sect is even still a sect, how to go on after everything’s happened, what the rest of the cultivation world will do about them. She’s been - well-shielded, from the politics between sects. All she’s known her whole life is only the music. “So I came out here to clear my head. Um, musical exercises help me think, so. I promise I’m not doing anything bad.”

“Um...” Her voice is small to start and it appears as if it takes GREAT COURAGE for the girl to speak up - holding her rake with both hands, dirt-smudged face coloring- “...Can you help me till THE REST of this plot?” Her gaze drifts to her little basket of slips, sitting in the shade beside her pristine outer robe, folded and kept out of the dirt. “And then with planting the sweet potatoes?” Her eyes sparkle faintly, and she smiles when she thinks about how the garden will grow. “...You can have some of the crop on harvest day, as thanks. And lunch, later, if you’d like.”

Studying classical music at university. A talented pianist but ended up focusing on the guqin. Basically, that pretty, quiet (shy OOPS) xuejie who’s constantly in the music room but will help if you interrupt her to ask. Always has an extra hair tie, pen and pick : ‘ )

Still left behind as a kid and quiet as a result, esp bc when her aunt and uncle picked her up, she moved from the countryside into the city quite suddenly - such that her aunt had been worried about her when she was younger and sent her to a music class so she can express herself differently. Still academically excellent - though to be fair, she doesn’t get out too much because of that. She’s fine with that though.

Drink of choice is milk or juice or fruit soda. Gets heart palpitations from caffeine and is a lightweight to boot when it comes to alcohol. Sort of a bread junkie - she need only go to a boulangerie to cheer up. Has her own little vegetable garden on her tiny window balcony in her tiny student apartment. She gives out her homegrown tomatoes as gifts.

Feeds the strays in the alley behind the student apartment. They’re all kind of hers, in a way. Wants to have pets but, well - that’s hard right now. Has a bike but takes the bus frequently when she has to lug her instrument around - headphones in the whole way. Her apartment is open to most friends who might need the couch because she doesn’t mind the company and great deal of the time she’s in the music room late into the night anyway.

Takes really good care of her hands! Favorite lotion is orange blossom. She smells like it constantly. Collects cute phone charms. Works at a music classroom for children part time teaching piano.

Circumstances willing, Xueqing has a little plot of land probably no bigger than a tiny garden that she grows vegetables in. She farms it herself, switching out the types of the vegetables every few years and is very happy to eat her own crop. If she likes you a lot she might gift you some : ‘ )

She tastes metallic tang and the sting of SALT on his lips. The air is heavy with the scent of blood, oppressive with the swirling miasma of the distinct feeling that something's WRONG, which has only grown since she's found her way into the room following the trail of destruction - an incessant ringing in her ear and an invisible hand closing around her insides. She can barely breathe - but almost instinctively it makes her come closer to him, gravitate.

She HOLDS ON.

Her hands are ice, her eyes closed when she pulls away only slightly, still connected to him, forehead to forehead, nose to nose, encasing him and encased by him. " - Don't make me go." Voice hoarse and small and when she blinks her tears drop, SCALDING, onto his cheek. "...Please. Please don't push me away anymore." Lips trembling, breath uneven. "I know - I know I've given you nothing but GRIEF all these years, but - I just want to be here with you." Closes her eyes. "Whatever happens. Please."

" - Ah, Miss! Miss...” Voice pitches HIGHER than she had meant for it to, face heating with embarrassment as she presses her lips together. “...Would you be interested in a music club? We teach a variety of instruments at no charge...” Like her courage her voice gets smaller and smaller - she doesn't really know why the seniors decided she was the best candidate to set up her guqin on a street corner to TEMPT the passersby into learning music, but - she wanted to do SOMETHING.

"...PROMISE.” The girl sticks out her hand - pinky UPRIGHT. “Promise you won’t come looking for me unless I’m REALLY in trouble.” It’s become a comfort, seeing familiar eyes glowing in the dark out of the depths of the woods when she opens her window at night, when she meditates a little further from the REST of the sect. Over the years they have become a sort of family, even if they see each other only from afar most of the time. “It’s not peaceful among the sects right now - you could get in REAL trouble.”

"...There's only SO MUCH you can teach yourself, though." Mumbles after a moment, tucking her hands into her elbows where they're stacked against her knees, back to the steps. She spends MOST of the conferences here - frequently with a borrowed tome. Tensions between sects run deep, despite Sect Leader Jin's carefully maintained balance, and - she tries to keep herself and the rest of the younger disciples from Moling out of trouble, relatively. So long as they don't run into any hotblooded youth from Gusu or a particularly snobby Jin sect disciple - most of the time their stay passes by in peace - and as such she's familiarized herself with the parts of the library at Lanling that are open to guests. Realizes a beat late how DEJECTED she sounds, and starts again, startled - "I don't mean to - I didn't mean to complain. It's - I guess I just don't know what else I could do, other than sit here and read."

Growing up with the Moling Su is mostly uneventful - maybe not so different than one might think, compared to growing up with any other sect, apart from the general differences of cultivating with a less long-established sect. It’s still an interesting position to consider though, because she ends up as part of a fairly early generation of disciples, even if not exactly the first -  and so there are plenty of people her age, maybe older who call her “shijie” and who expect her to be a better cultivator or to know what she’s doing more, despite the fact that she’s fairly young. Talented, yes, naturally spiritually inspired, yes - inexperienced nevertheless, and thrust from a faiirly young age into a place of awkward seniority.

In terms of her education/cultivation, she also quickly reached a point where it was hard to progress. Not necessarily through any fault of any of her teachers, but just, the lack of established resources that allows her to break through her current ceiling once she’s hit it. She considers asking to travel but always swallows it back down - both because she loves her remaining family and does not want to be apart from them, because she’s afraid of traveling on her own, and because she thinks the sect could do with her. She knows she’s not improving anymore here, but she sticks around regardless.

The rivalry with Gusu is something I think she purposely avoids thinking about. She recognizes and accepts the Lans good reputation, but she also doesn’t think her own sect’s intentions and establishment and history could be as nefarious or terrible as is thought of. Therefore - maybe everything is just a terrible misunderstanding? Either way it’s too much confrontation and conflict for her to really handle. As a result, she’s automatically more on guard around members of the Lans, not because she thinks anything will happen but just because she anticipating and therefore preemptively afraid of unkind words. She treats them all politely and respectfully, however, and given the chance might nerd out about music with some of them.

Post-canon...is probably kind of tough, for her. I don’t know how the whole sect fares in terms of politics and general standing in the post-canon world, especially after S.u S.he’s death. I don’t know how to project a trajectory for them, because I think the cultivation world has simultaneously learned hard lessons and also...not so much from everything that’s happened since S.unshot. But I think regardless she feels bound to her little family. Beyond being a sect, the people really became her family, and that’s all she knows. She never wished for a strong sect or to have fame or political standing in the cultivation world, never thought any of this would happen or could happen - all she wanted was for her family to be together. So yes - it breaks her heart a little bit. But hopefully, it’ll be okay one day.

She’s particularly good at musical cultivation - equal parts nature and nurture. That is, she has a natural talent for music and how it falls in relation to spiritual power, and converse to that she’s too small to really use a sword super well, so she also poured most of her time into guqin over the years. It’s the aspect she enjoys the most as well, which she finds herself very lucky for. She really does just like music, and she also finds relief that she does music well. It does make it difficult to separate work from life, however, in the case of her studies - she wants to excel because she’s passionate about the subject, but she also feels like she has to excel because the responsibility and expectation from everyone around her of Being Good At This is on her shoulders. Her cultivation overall really has more to do with focus and honing and developing a craft/skill and thereby improving herself rather than meditation or talismans or scripture. 

I think it’s hard for her to determine if something is what she wants versus what others want. If she really sits down and thinks hard about it she could separate the two, but she’s doesn’t usually attempt to sort it out. She’s firstly a peacemaker and secondly a filial child - so she ends up doing what others want her to do and still relieved to it because she didn’t make anyone unhappy, etc. etc. As for what she wants - a lot of the times it really boils down to just having a peaceful, and generally happy life with the people she loves and to be allowed to continue pursuing music. She doesn’t have particularly concrete ambitions, reeally.

It takes her a second, a great gust of air entering her lungs to push her voice past her lips in something just louder than a squeak. " - Um.” Pink blossoms beneath skin, diffusing across her face like a drop of paint in a bowl of water - “I know our adults don’t like each other very much -” UNDERSTATEMENT OF THE CENTURY - squeezes her eyes shut, “But can you...take me back, Lan Gongzi? Just - just to a path I can recognize is fine.” Swallows thickly and adds, sheepish, “I didn’t mean to get lost.” And will likely be scolded for straying so far. Couraged used up, she deflates, and drops her head until she’s looking at the very tips of her shoes instead.
