Anyways, Christine and Stephen’s relationship is so very important to him as a character and to me as someone with a big gay bi crush on both Rachel and Christine. Moreover, she is such an impressive person outside of Stephen, she is a doctor (not a nurse, stop calling her a nurse) in her own right, a trauma surgeon (which is not an easy job) and context clues tell us that she’s a damn talented one and could probably be as much of a big shot as Stephen if she wanted to be. She co-founded an entire surgical technique with Stephen, she also has the patience of a saint! She draws boundaries when needed, but doesn’t let personal issues stop her from doing her job. She is having a full on panic attack when Stephen comes to her later and needs her help, and yet she manages to maintain enough composure (despite the magic chaos going on) to get the work done right and efficiently.  She also knows and recognizes Stephen enough to see how much he has changed in the time away, meaning that she was more than a “barely lovers” and can read him better than most can.

In terms of how much she is important to Stephen, when he is pretty sure he’s going to die when he faces Dormammu --- it’s her he needs to see before hand. Even when he has lost everything, it’s her engraved watch (broken beyond repair) that he insists on keeping --- this is including the fact that its associated with the crash that nearly took his life and costed him his entire career and ability in his hands (so it as negative memories) and the fact that he could have been seriously hurt or killed when he chose to refuse to hand it over and fight muggers over it. Out of everything, he kept this already broken watch because it connected him to her. The last images of the movie are him steadily putting it on (with an emphasis in showing the engraving one last time) and looking at it affectionately. Showing his growth and appreciation for her and the journey he’s been on.

So yeah --- Christine Palmer is extremely important to me and to Stephen !  Despite his words said in anger, the entire rest of the film shows that she was the love of his life up to that point --- and he will always love her. The exact way he does might change over time, but she will always be a permanent part of his life  ---  she is his north star, his moral compass. The one who’s worthiness he aspires to (literally seen in the film through his constant attempt to apologise and finally earning forgiveness because he’s actually proven he’s grown and it’s not just platitudes).
