GASP oh a self indulgent terror headcanon

Well now you’ve given me an excuse to talk about my boy my beloved Tom Hartnell and also John by extension bc I love them both SO very much and tragic sibling relationships makes me dissolve into powder

I think Tom spent a lot of his life following John around, and he was comfortable there. He felt safest trailing behind his brother and so when John died (died incredibly suddenly by what the book tells,) he was sort of. Cut loose. He’d never been on his own like this before in his life bc John had always been there. Which is probably why he fell in with Hickey so easily, cause he was looking for something to fill that empty place.

On a less sad note I think he ends up making better friends with some of the other men after John’s death and his lashing. My self-indulgent thought is that he imprints on Henry Peglar like a baby bird once everyone’s on Erebus, bc Henry Peglar can be very older brother shaped when he wants to be.

I also think if things has been different and hadn’t gone to shit he might’ve wanted to be an Ice Master someday. That’s not based on anything in particular but I think it would be nice for him and I think “ice master Hartnell” has a nice ring to it
