also something something about izzy as a character representing "the old guard," those queer elders who endured extreme danger & hostility for who they were (exhibit A is him & ed constantly talking about how all their old friends are dead & didn't make it like hello) & who heavily relied on assimilationist tactics to survive in a society that he knew would never accept him, & therefore now struggles deeply to be at ease around all the younger queers who have no desire to hide their identities, & has a hard time trusting in a safe space where there is no fear of repercussions for who he is

with the new season & also a few new of.md followers here i just want to gently remind everyone that i write izzy as a trans man. & no, he's not necessarily "out," so unless we talk about it ooc your muse would have no way of knowing this. so it shouldn't affect most threads, but it does factor into my portrayal in some small ways.

the emerald ring that izzy always wears around the cravat at his throat was a family heirloom that belonged to his mother.  miriam was a kind  &  compassionate seamstress who married richard hands shortly after moving to london from her ancestral home near modern-day gaza.  as a child, izzy loved his mother very much  —  she is the only person who has ever touched him gently.  when she died of pneumonia when he was twelve years old, izzy kept her ring for himself.  for awhile, he wore it on his finger.  when he joined the navy he kept it safely hidden in his inside pocket.  only after he joined edward’s crew did he begin to wear it at his throat, always visible  &  yet holding his defensive outfit tightly closed.

anyway, the only time we ever see izzy's right hand without the glove is in that scene belowdeck when ed asks him to shoot him & he refuses, & during the storm scene directly thereafter where he does shoot ed to prevent him from destroying the ship & killing the crew. pretty incredible that the only time he ever shows his hand (literally speaking) is during the climactic moment of breakdown of his relationship with ed.
what's even more interesting is that in the scene with him & ed belowdeck, you can see that he has a little red heart tattoo on the junction of his right hand & thumb to match the black spade on his left. notable here that ed has a spider tattoo on his hand, which he says that he covers with gloves because he's afraid of spiders. in contrast, izzy has a heart tattoo on his right hand, which is always covered except in the above noted exceptions. the symbolism is not subtle. this is a man who guards his love from being seen, literally & figuratively hides his heart because he's afraid of love — until he finds himself in an active a life-or-death situation where there is no other choice but to face it & act on it.
there isn't a brand there as far as i can tell... but it's my blog & i do what i want, so i'm probably still keeping my back-of-hand deserter's brand headcanon, at least in most verses. his right hand has both the brand & the little heart tattoo (to me).

🪐 — izzy / headcanon ;
izzy’s right glove that he never removes is covering up a large ugly brand on the back of his hand that labels him as a naval deserter. the tool that was used to make it would look something like this but with a large D beside the crown design in the center. he keeps it covered because he doesn’t want anyone — fellow pirates or otherwise — to know of his past in the military.
