this. may be a hot take. but people who argue that problematic situations in fiction genuinely affect the real life of the person reading them have the EXACT same argument as straight people who act like showing gay couples on TV shows is going to turn their kid gay
#this is abt that person who posted 'not to me not if its you' and then told people not to rb bc it was abt incest#like#'if my kid watches this show about a gay couple he'll grow up to be gay!'#and#'if my kid watches this show critically analyzing how toxic abusive relationships are he'll grow up to be in a toxic relationship!'#are literally interchangeable#i understand that showing impressionable youth things meant to make them root for REALLY bad people is bad#and like you should monitor them and not let them watch shows like romanticizing serial killers until they're old enough to understand why*#*being a murderer or abusive is bad and they shouldn't do it#but like?? some of yall act like abusive parents#'bad shit happened to me when i was a kid so now all children must be confined to a bubble where we monitor their every move and action'#'they dont get to choose what they want to watch or read or enjoy or learn about'#'how DARE you say im abusive when im just keeping these children SAFE'#my argument is getting a little scrambled but this is all the exact same arguments straight people use to argue against gay rep u know#'i cant show a kid this bc then they'll believe it' is the argument against gay rep AND the argument for censorship#dont get me wrong u shouldnt let ur kid go ham on the internet or like read lolita or some shit#but stop acting like a 20 year old is going to join a cult because they read a cult au of their favorite otherwise wholesome ship#yall act like all humans dont have awful thoughts and feelings and use art as a medium to expel them#'oh no :( i enjoyed this quote without understanding any of the background info....now i know it and the quote itself is tainted'#'this quote cant be used anymore because its problematic despite being so removed from the original meaning*#*that literally ANYONE could have said it and it wouldn't have changed the impact the quote had on me or the world at all :('#fiction does affect reality yes#but not to the EXTENT that some of yall think it does#harry potter is a huge hit but it's effect on society was that we all just like fantasy now and not that we divide ourselves by fuckin like#blood purity and like no one started a fancy private school called hogwarts that also taught witchcraft#most people are pretty good at keeping fiction and reality separate#and if I CAN do it then so can more people than some of yall fuckin think#idk if you know this. but being unable to separate fiction and reality is a symptom of quite a few severe mental illnesses#there's nothing wrong w having them but those illnesses should be TREATED not indulged in#idk unfollow me if this pissed u off because im really not in the mood for anyone's bullshit
