idk why really but i love eng/port but i love the implications of them bumping into antonio aswell. Like antonio and port already have a hmmm odd?? relationship in canon where antonio appears to be vaguely unaware of anything but having arthur there aswell just adds a layer of complication to the whole thing. like okay antonio, are ya just gonna pretend you don't notice port and arthur all over each other?? just gonna pretend thats not happening ?? Okay dude, if you close ur eyes its not real
'Odd' is one way of putting it. I too tie up people to a rack and smother them in olive oil as a form of torture. Wait.
Toni doesn't understand why Arthur is so pissed at him for so much of the 16th century and yes there are religious and larger political factors at work but there's also the very personal issue of every region that was traditionally friendly with England - Low Countries, Burgundy and then Portugal - had all been absorbed into Habsburg dominions, then specifically the Spanish ones after Charles V split them. Put that with the later pressure of Scotland and France also having a union potentially of their own and you have a very cornered Arthur who is going to lash out hard.
And it's genuinely completely incidental - the isolating of England. Like Spain wasn't like ohoho first Flanders then Portugal and then England will be totally alone hohoho! like England really...didn't matter... that much initially. But Arthur can be such a brat and Antonio is genuinely completely oblivious about why this kid is so pissed off and nothing Gabe says about why makes it make sense in his head.
Then during the Portuguese Restoration War happens and Toni still doesn't get it. He's just very :( about his Port and Ned leaving so close to each other.
Then he thinks he's doing Gabriel a favour in 1762 by ridding English influence with an invasion only for Arthur to come running back in like a bull seeing red and Toni still doesn't get it.
Then the Peninsular War happens and Toni... still doesn't get it.
Arthur and Gabe just had their 650th anniversary this month.
Toni still doesn't get it.
