has anyone thought of the relationship between gomens and spn yet. just curious
as someone who was at the height of my spn hyperfixation during the burst of good omens popularity back in winter-spring of 2012, i can definitively say that those parallels were extreeeeeeemely present.
i was part of a gomens rp group back in the day, and as far as i can remember, pretty much everybody worked in spn references freely and frequently. references to castiel as aziraphale’s weird rebellious little brother, god as chuck, and the obvious crowley connection (exacerbated by the fact that 2012 gomens fandom predated even the audio drama, so half of us, myself included, thought a.j.- crowley and mark-sheppard-crowley were pronounced the same way)... there was a ton of it.
even outside the niche little rp group i was in, i think there was just generally a lot of overlap in the venn diagram of 2012 spn and 2012 gomens fandoms. i mean, thematically there was a lot in common (at least, thematically for the time. it’s been like six or seven years since i’ve laid eyes on an episode of supernatural so i have no fuckin clue what its themes even are these days, if there are any lmao), both textually in terms of the main characters rebelling against roles and rules that had been set out for them, and subtextually in terms of the queer narratives that spoke to so many people (before spn in particular managed to alienate most folks who saw it that way).
i mean, at the time i was a young woman literally in the process of coming to terms with the fact that a) i was gay, and b) the values instilled on me by my religious upbringing did not actually align with my personal values as i started to think for myself and form my own opinions. so like, obviously (though not obvious to me at the time) castiel and aziraphale both resonated with me in a huge way. and i defs feel like that narrative is incredibly common with folks on this website, so it makes sense that that population would end up finding out about and finding comfort in both works simultaneously.
also, on a way less pretentious level, there is the fact that, back in 2012 tumblr, fandom mashups were just super popular in general, so like. jesus christ, i mean, if people found a way to do that shit for shows like spn and bbc sherlock and dr who, which had basically nothing in common, ofc they were gonna jump on the chance to do it with two works that actually made sense together lmao.
anyways, tl;dr, and also to answer your actual question: yup.
