I'm really glad to hear your opinion on Black Sails! I gave it a try but couldn't push through the first few episodes. But I'm willing to give it another shot if you say it gets much better !

It's been a couple years since I've seen the series but my overall lasting impression of it is very positive. I definitely remember season one being the weakest and including some Dark Edgy stuff for no real narrative reason, eg. sexual assault which I believe never happens again once the producers stopped pushing the writers to emulate Game of Thrones and let them do their thing

There are still sex scenes and strong violent scenes (which may not be your cup of tea) but from memory they're there for a narrative reason. One of the violent scenes that remember quite strongly was basically there to show us how horrific the perpetrating character is, not Edgy-ness for the sake of Edgy-ness

This video by Rowan Ellis is a well done comparison of the writing in Black Sails and Game of Thrones (Black Sails is very well-written), but uhh it's an hour-long video and discusses a bunch of spoilers (but not entirely about the show's ending despite the video's title) so I certainly wouldn't blame anyone for not checking it out. There are a lot of positive comments on the video which might help give you some insight into what people liked about the show tho

Obviously we might have different tastes, but it's one of my favourite shows and if you do decide to watch more I hope you'll enjoy it too
