Note
where do you get a lot of your fashion inspo from?
Ok, this will be a bit long and ramble-y so sorry in advance.
I guess I sort of go through phases. For a while I genuinely did spend a lot of time looking at fashion-y stuff on Tumblr and Instagram and that definitely influenced me. Lately, I spend less time actively seeking out fashion type stuff but I do get about a billion promo emails from all the vaguely affordable stores and places like R29 so I’ll browse through those fairly regularly (even tho in the last few years I have been way too broke to do any regular shopping). I shop almost exclusively on sale (I’ll make an exception for shoes) and I typically won’t buy something if I don’t already have an idea of how I’ll wear it. Honestly, often I just sort of pick out the plainest, simplest version of whatever is currently trendy and then get it in black once there is a deal of some sort.
As far as particular influences I guess there are three, maybe four, I can think of. I had a brief lolita phase (brand and rules and all) in college which was unexpectedly useful when it comes to how to coordinate colors/patterns/shapes. Some of my more ‘girly’ looks stem from that. I’ve been obsessed with the sort of 80s heavy metal aesthetic (I’m pretty big on metal in general) basically since always so a lot of my outfits are a toned down version of that, especially my I’m-running-on-five-hours-of-sleep-and-can’t-deal-with-dressing-up everyday outfits. And I have a sweet spot for the 50s style retro stuff which is more cutesy and feminine than I think I can pull off but it’s definitely been an influence. Hence the occasional bodycon skirt and the red bandana that’s really ubiquitous to me. I guess there is some minimal cyberpunk mixed in there too, sort of a subtle Molly Millions/razor-girl type of thing.
The other part of how I settle on wearing one thing or another is really that I have a few sort of go-to categories of outfits, fill-in-the-blank models really. On really lazy/busy days I do high waisted pants (preferably skinny) + simple top + neck bandana. When I want to be more feminine I do sleeveless dress + button down + over the knee socks (if you creep deep enough in my posts for a while I wore a ton of those outfits). I keep to one or two colors (mostly black really) and color-block a little. I pretty heavily skew towards high waisted everything (better hips-to-waist ratio and just sorta works with my shape) with tops tucked in. When I am deviating from a type outfit I wear a lot and trying something new I’ll rely heavily on all black. Having a couple rough guidelines like that takes out some of the guesswork and it also helps that my make-up and shoes are basically always the same (I have maybe three pairs of shoes that I cycle through largely depending on the weather and I’ve worn some variations of the winged eye more or less since high school).
