June 1 - Farming Activity
Today we only had an activity we had was located in Tokorozawa, which is on the outskirts of Tokyo. We had to take a bus to the location, which took about an hour and a half. This sleepy area was incredibly quiet, with the inhabits either being incredibly elderly or toddlers. Obviously this isn’t the general populace but things clearly move slower here than they do in Tokyo. For our activity we planted rice shoots into a paddy, gaining first hand experience at how the food we eat is produced. This required us to get directly into the mud (filled with manure), bending our backs in order to find roots for our baby rice shoots. I had so much fun doing this today, as opposed to some of my classmates who were pansies about the whole event. What I found interesting about the location was that the rice paddies were fused with a park. This creates a beautiful blend of rice paddies, blooming flowers and a gazebo found in the center. While we planted I looked around and observed the reactions of the Japanese around us. I wonder what was going through their heads (likely what are these dumb Americans doing). I tried to fill out my entire row, but was only able to complete half of it. I will say I am quite proud of myself for the organization of my planting, as some of my other classmates were questionable. Once we finished I walked back over to my rice shoots and ate my meal while watching over them. I hope they grow to be big and strong. Tonight I might head to Shinjuku with a couple of friends I have made (Nico and Raj) to play some poker with the locals. Hopefully I don’t get fleeced. (Update: I got fleeced)
I realized I haven’t shown what I’ve been eating for breakfast. Look at the final attached image. Yummy traditional Japanese breakfast is awesome.
Academic Reflection
In our first reading we learned about the transfer of agricultural knowledge from the Koreans to the Japanese. The most important shared knowledge comes in the form of the transplantation technique, which boosts yields by up to 2-3x. This technique opposed the haphazard and random planting used before hand, and once the transplantation technique was adopted the population in Japan rose meeting its new ability to produce. However, this came as a double edged sword for the Japanese as new contact beyond their archipelago resulted in the introduction of various diseases such as smallpox which wiped out said increased population on various occasions. The rice we planted were already grown shoots in-line with the transplantation technique.
In our second reading the problems that currently effect Japanese agriculture were laid out in great length. The primary issue exists in the majority of farmers being elderly, and small holders who produce inefficiently. This will continue to grow as a problem, mainly aggravating issues of food security as Japan is forced to import a major amount of agricultural products to meet demand. What truly worries me the most is how Japan will be able to cope with climate change. While they already face the major challenge of being an island country, as the hydrologic systems of our globe become distorted agriculture not only in Japan but everywhere will be hard hit. While Japan may use technologies such as hydroponic farming to combat this, if food security is already an issue other nations who face growing agricultural problems may not be willing to export what they have to places like Japan. The other issue is that those who do most of the farming are elderly. While todays excursion is only a small glimpse into Japan, this issue was confirmed by my own eyes. With Japan’s dwindling birth rate who will take the mantle of growing enough food.

Rice Farming Activity
Tumblr media
Today began at 7:00am to make it on time for the rice farming excursion that we had planned. The entire class took a bus about 2 hours away (18 miles) as there was a decent amount of traffic which is to be expected of Tokyo during early morning rush hour. The rice planting was held at an agricultural park located somewhere near Higashiyamato. When we got to the farm I was surprised by how peaceful walking around the rice paddies felt, as the water feature really made it feel more like a garden than a farm. We met some elderly Japanese people, one of which had to hold his eyelid open to see us which was a bit interesting. We also saw many school children in groups on what I assume was a field trip or something similar, who were very friendly and waved to all of us Americans. While there, we were given bags and told to grab as many rice shoots as would fit in the bags and take them over to a flooded area where we could begin planting the rice shoots into the muddy wet soil. We all had to take our shoes off and wear two pairs of socks while wading through the muddy waters. We planted them in long and skinny rows of three each about six inches apart. After resting for a bit at the hotel we decided to walk around Akihabara for a bit and went into Don Quijote again, this time at a different location but equally as hectic. After walking around more and building up an appetite we agreed upon eating at a place called Coco Ichibanya which serves mostly katsu curry. I ordered chicken katsu curry and absolutely deleted the entire meal, 9/10 would be 10/10 if they had free refills on drinks as it was a bit spicy so I had to ration.
Tumblr media
Some friends and I went out to see the city a bit more tonight and had a great time interacting with the locals and seeing new parts of Tokyo.
Academic Reflection
Today's readings were very closely connected to our activity for the day, as we learned about premodern agriculture in Japan. More specifically about how rice had come to Japan from various Asian areas between the second and third centuries. It had been grown there for a decent while and was seemingly perfected when the Koreans brought knowledge of planting techniques as well as tools such as iron knives, shovels and plows. These were all extremely helpful to boosting crop production and assisting to feed the rapidly growing population of Japan during the early years. The transplantation method was a noteable advancement in the rice production field, where they would divide the land into equal quarters, using one quarter as a seedbed to germinate and sprout the seedlings into shoots. Then after a few weeks and the fields were flooded they would uproot the rice shoots and replant them individually a few inches apart to allow for maximum root growth. This method really made the process of rice production more efficient and provided more food to help sustain the population. Getting to go firsthand and do this transplantation step was very enjoyable and allowed me to connect with the text on a deeper level, where I was able to put the techniques that I learned about into use in a real life scenario, gaining experience which cemented the knowledge in my brain.

Paddy Rice Transplanter
Paddy Rice Transplanter is use for the plantation of rice crops it sowing plants two row at same time. It is manual paddy rice transplanter. Its weight is 18 to 20kg.This machine become transplanter easy and simple.
Jivamrut Slurry Filter Tank
Jivamrut slurry filter tank used for the filtaring of jivamrut. The jivamrut is the  liquid organic which is used for agricultural. Jeevamrut helps increase the earthworm count in the soil which is more effective for the crops. The jivamrut is benifitial for the organic manure.
 Raised Bed Planter Machine
Abrupt Environmental Changes, diminishing rainfall and other such uncontrollable factors are accounting for great Agricultural losses. There is an immense need of mechanization of dry land farming in world.
After plantation timely irrigation is possible only if proper facilities are available, else germination of sown crops solely depended on rains. If the depth of sowing is improper or because of irregular rains, the crisis of subsequent sowing still remains. Studying the needs of dry land farming. the Specialty of this planter is that it can sow wide varieties of crops like Maize, Soyabean, Greengram, Blackgram, Tur, Groundnut, Sunflower, Cotton, Sorghum, Mellet etc. on a raised bed and at the same time make furrows, Using Raised bed Planter, Sowing can be done at different row spacing ranging from 8” to 18” whereas the depth of sowing can be maintained up to 2”to 4”. Thus after germination, even if the rains delay upto 8 to15 days, the need of resowing is avoided.
A suitable metering mechanism comprising fluted rollers is provided which meter the seed and fertilizer to be applied. This mechanism is driven by ground wheel which is connected to the front of the implement. Before sowing, the flow of seed and fertilizer can be adjusted using “Adjustment knobs” according to the sawing pattern and crop to be sown. To the rear of implement is a leveler which cover the sown seeds with the soil and thus levels the bed. Both leveler and ridger can be adjusted for required depth whereas the tynes can be adjusted laterally.
