Countdown to April 1st on the USA West Coast for the #24hourproject 2017. 3400+ worldwide photographers strong. Follow along around the world by searching #24hourproject and #24hr17 . New Zealand and Australia have already started. The final, and my fave shot from last year. 20:04pm #Sacramento "The Reigning Empress, Harmony" by @victoria.j.hart as part of the #24hourproject #24hr16 #24hr16_Sacramento to support @She_Has_Hope. For more information please visit @24hourproject I was looking for my pack list from last year and came across this list I wrote to keep focused: Focus of the Project * Capture the HUMAN CONDITION /Feelings/Emotions. Stay within theme, but use the time wisely to capture any photos that strike a fancy. * There is no need to be on the move the whole time. Stay in one place where the light is good and work the scene. 24 hours is a long time * GET OVER YOUR FEAR. Shoot first, explain later. * Enjoy the process. There is rarely a time when you get the whole day to do nothing but shoot. * Stay safe. * TALK to people. Get their story. Be human. So yeah. Let's just do that this year too. Have fun, stay safe out there, and document the hell out of it. #streetphotography

We should back the truck up here and start from the beginning of last year's #24hourproject. It will be a great chance tor revisit the photos, what strategy worked, and give you some take aways if you are participating this year (DO IT! Register free at @24hourproject). 12:04am #Sacramento #USA "Invisible" by @victoria.j.hart as part of the #24hourproject #24hr16 #24hr16_sacramento to support @shehashope. For more information please visit @24hourproject The shot: This was the first good one right out of the gate, just after midnight. It gave me a boost in confidence right away, which was good since I was pretty nervous about how the project was going to go. Lots of good foot traffic of people going to or coming from bars in the area. Loved the juxtaposition. Miffed that it was a bit out of focus. Chosen for forms and sentiment. It is one of the shots of the day that I still like. Also, not sure if that is water or piss 2016 gear: Fuji XT1 w/ 35 mm lens. B&W JPEG +RAW. iPhone 5 if needed. Canon T2i at base camp as fallback. Cosyspeed Camslinger bag. Flash on camera for initial dark hours. Results: Fuji XT1 indispensable. Wifi built in worked perfectly. 3 batteries for the day, which is impressive for the Fuji, but I keep it off until needed. B&W was a safe choice. Very forgiving, easy and quick to post process. RAW files nice to have, but not necessary. iPhone a perfect backup. It would be very easy to use the iPhone as primary, so if having a bigger camera is what's holding you back, you have nothing to worry about. Never needed the Canon. Would have went straight to iPhone in a catastrophic failure, and it was great for when I needed a wider lens. The camslinger bag did not fare well. It was the older model with the button latch that you kind of pulled out. That latch self destructed about hour 3 when I was trying to yard my camera out quick enough to take a picture of the guy walking through the McDonalds parking lot with a sheet around him like a cape. Missed it. Managed to get it back together enough to keep using it the rest of the day, thankfully. Never used the flash. I usually run on silent, so having to change settings was prohibitive.

A day and a half to go until #24hourproject 2017. The number of participants just cleared 3000! Register and check out the map at 24hourproject.org. Any #sacramento photogs are welcome to join up with me for all or part of the day. From last year: 9:11am #Sacramento "Daddy's Helper" by @victoria.j.hart as part of the #24hourproject #24hr16 #24hr16_Sacramento to support @She_Has_Hope. For more information please visit @24hourproject This cutie was helping Mom and Dad set up their donut trailer at the #midtownfarmersmarket . I explained the project and asked permission. Managed to catch this one that captured his shyness 😊. I did not stay long enough to get a donut 🙁. Nutrition requirements while shooting for 24 hrs: last year, I was on foot the entire time. Estimated 15-20 miles for the day. (Not worth the phone battery power to track). I felt hungry every 4 hours or so. I was trying to shoot and post in the same hour, so it was beneficial to post early in the hour to have latitude before the next time to post where I could sneak in a meal. Gives time to review pics and rest. 2017: Use a combo of bike and walk to cover more ground, which will be helpful, especially in the wee hours where people are hard to find. Pack more snacks. Relax about shot time vs post time as long as one gets up per hour. Eat good food. #streetphotography
