#the fun part is that it’s the campus bus so it’s 8 minute walk from my door to the stop #and then I’m only on the bus for like 4 minutes #but that cuts 15 minutes of walking up hill #BUT it’s an electric bus and the charging station is also at the bus stop I get on at #so I never know if we’re gonna be parked for 7-12 minutes #i try to give myself 30 minutes to get to campus bc that also means I can walk if I really really missed the bus #they are not on a schedule at all and the app doesn’t tell you when they’re gonna charge

I saw that post about what to do if you're homeless again (the one that starts by telling you to spend all of your money on motel rooms lmao) anyway, here's a few thoughts, specifically for trans girls, cuz I don't really care otherwise tbh:

1) plan ahead, most trans girls are in precarious housing situations, you will have a much easier time when it falls apart if you already have a pack with most of the gear you need in it. Also, if you find yourself in a situation where you cant make rent, dont pay part of it, spend that money on gear, pocket the rest and leave, youll have a much nicer time. Look up your local eviction laws, you have plenty of time. (Gear list at the end)

2) travel! If you're in Arizona in May, leave. it's about to be hot as hell. If you're in Michigan in October, leave. It's about to be cold as hell. If you're in a big city, leave. It's way easier to be homeless pretty much anywhere else. Amtrak is cheaper and more comfortable than greyhound, hitchhiking is free and easy, if you're alone it's not that much slower than the previous two, and it's more fun, and sometimes people buy you food or whatever or give you money. I promise it's not scary and you're entirely capable of doing it, no matter who you are. 95+% of people who will pick you up are very nice. All you have to do is take the bus out of town, as far down the highway you can, to an exit with a truck stop if possible, then just stand on the side of the road with your thumb out until someone picks you up. You can stand at the bottom of the ramp(on the highway) near where the merge lane ends or at the top of the ramp(where there's usually a traffic light), the former is more likely to lead to cop interactions but will maybe get you a ride faster, check on hitchwiki for how the cops are in the area. don't be afraid to take a commuter bus or Amtrak to get out of a shitty cop area

3) skip shelters if you can (they are very occasionally a decent place to get stuff from) and encampments, good places to sleep include the trees near railroad tracks or highways, wooded areas behind shopping centers, sections of parks without paths, overgrown empty lots. Hang a tarp above you if there's an appreciable chance of rain, there's tons of YouTube tutorials on how to do this, maybe I'll make a post about what I usually do some day. There are many habits more fun than motel rooms, save your money for them lmao.

4) get on food stamps. This is easier in some places than others, but it makes the whole thing a lot easier. Just tell them you're homeless, if they don't give you a card the same day, you can probably ask to pick it up from that office, alternatively some drop in centers/day shelters can receive mail for you, or you can have it sent to general delivery(USPS service, look it up)

7) libraries are great for charging your phone and using wifi, but also keep an eye out, plenty of random outlets on the outsides of buildings are also powered

5) dumpster. sidewalk trash cans, Aldi, Einstein's, trader Joe's, pizza places, etc. You need to develop a bit of a sense for it but it's an easy way to get cooked food or travelling food or expensive food without spending resources. Also it's fun.

6) water is free, go into the bathroom of any gas station or grocery store in America(offer not valid in most big cities or on the west coast, but in that case just go to the library) and fill up your water bottle

8) hygiene notes: truckers get free showers from chain truck stops(loves, pilot/flying j) go there and ask them. convenient if you're hitchhiking, also you don't need to shower 3 times a day, really, you'll survive. Ditto with deodorant. Take care of your teeth though. Take your socks off every. day. Change them consistently. Safety razors give a good shave, work well without adequate water pressure, and the replacement blades are very stealable, they're kind of heavy though. Walmart makes these electric razors for women that take AA batteries and are pretty light but give a worse shave, also they kinda go through batteries, pick whatever works for you(cartridge razors suck)

9) traveling food notes: peanut butter is great, tortillas and bagels travel pretty well, tuna packets are pretty good protein for traveling(the ones with rice and beans or whatever are nice since theyre often the same price as the regular), condiment packets are free, hot sauce makes everything better, and mayo goes well with tuna and has a bunch of calories in it, salad dressing packets are free from truck stops and work well turning the Walmart shredded vegetable packages (labeled for making into slaw, next to the bagged salads) into a salad with real vegetables(not iceberg lettuce) in it or mixing in with tuna packets for even more calories than mayo

Gear world:

Necessary items(in order of importance): a gallon of water carrying capacity(an Arizona jug or other twist top jug is conventional, but a bladder+arizona bottles also works), a tarp(larger than 6'x9', not brightly colored), a hank of parachord, a sleeping bag (20° rated, synthetic insulation), a backpack with a padded hip belt(at least 50L, no more than 75), rain gear(a rain poncho might cover your pack too, a rain jacket can help with wind when its cold, a trash bag inside or outside your pack can keep it dry, a plan to watch the weather and not get caught also works), a z-fold foam sleeping pad, three pairs of socks, two pairs of underwear (at least one pair of boxer breifs strongly recommended if you arent incredibly skinny), a decent pair of shoes with good arch support, a functional jacket(skip if you got a rain jacket before), a base layer(wool or poly, absolutely no cotton)

Convenient items: a sleeping bag liner(cotton free, keeps you warm in winter and cool in summer), gallon zip locks to pack your stuff in(helps keep it dry and organized), no more than one change of clothes(as light as possible), a multi-tool(can opener, pliers, wire cutter), lighter(burning rope ends etc), spoon, floss and needles for patching

In our group, Infrastructures are divided into three categories: transportation, shopping and education. After that, we found examples of electric vehicles and bus stop display in Singapore. So my day so far has been absolutely exhausting. 9:50 wake up & realize it's time to sort out finances. It's payday, so last night I moved everything leftover to savings. Then I had to explain to spouse how divvying up finances works. It's 1/2 to the Next Week Account. What's left is in thirds, so 1/3 to him and 2/3 to household, from which I take some for personal use. There's the school copay, which included a huge late fee for a day we weren't able to pick him up-- let's talk about that.

I was stranded because Uber kept cancelling my ride. I had to call spouse and have him take off work, which is a city away. He had to take the company van back to the station, get his car, and drive to pick our son up. He was 40 minutes late. I would have been two HOURS late. The director is not lenient about late fees, because she has to pay her staff time and a half if they're there late. That's understandable.

His school is subsidized, but the subsidy will cover only part of this school's tuition. We initially had him in a school with lower tuition, but he hated it there. He loves this school and we're not willing to try switching.

We also pay for the hot lunch program so he gets a variety of food at school and expands his tastes. Then there's the cost of Uber going to pick him up. Spouse drops him off but works too late to pick him up. I take Uber there because I'm unwilling to give up 2 hours of my free time to pick him up on the bus. I add money to my Uber wallet every week rather than having them go through PayPal or charging my card every time.

I forgot to pay the electric bill last month, so I had to put a *little* something towards that. The small one needs a new tray for his stroller and I might have to get him a new rear tire since one of them keeps leaking.

I'm going on a trip in two months because a friend invited me to an event in her city. Her household has some sensory triggers so booking a hotel is a MUST. I booked the flight and hotel today because I wanted the advantage of lower prices and the security of being able to plan ahead something airtight.

Initially I had booked my arrival for the wrong airport, two hours from my preferred destination, so I had to cancel the flight and book a different one. So then I went to the post office to send baby supplies to my pregnant friend who's expecting in ten weeks. The system got her address wrong so I had to go BACK into, get in the back of a magically appearing line, and explain to the teller that I needed to change the address, and ask her to update the system, and she didn't like that but again, ¯⁠\⁠_⁠(⁠ツ⁠)⁠_⁠/⁠¯

Then when I got back, the small one either hadn't napped or just woke up, but I had to take a call from my nutritionist, and then after that I got us ready to go to the grocery store and the park. At the grocery store, he wanted to eat food before we paid for it. We're at the park now but it feels like I'm about to just stop functioning.

This entry is all about backups.

When I stop at each station, the first priority will be finding my way to each bridge. My initial plan was to use a paper road atlas as my primary map and rely on GPS only as a fallback.

However, it quickly became apparent that a road map is not necessarily suitable because pedestrians and cars can't always go the same way. Instead, I've made copious printouts from Bing Maps, detailing the routes.

In London and Manchester, I'll need to travel by Tube and tram respectively, and I'll be using an Ember electric bus at the start and end of the tour, so those details are in the pile as well. There will be a strike on Thursday affecting the Elizabeth Line and buses in London, but those shouldn't affect my movement.

Pictured is my staple-free stapler, which binds paper together by cutting and threading rather than with metal. I took the opportunity to use this, allowing the documents to be more easily shredded and discarded on my return.

How and why we waited until we were 70 years old to visit London is a huge question for me. BUT we are finally here and no surprise - WE LOVE IT!

We arrived from Dublin on September 30 and opted for an iconic black cab from the airport.

It was pricey but we enjoyed talking to the driver who explained that the cabbies own their own vehicle but must attend lengthy classes and pass a comprehensive test before being licensed to be a cabbie in London. What I didn't know is that the location was in a sketchy neighborhood, that the place would be dirty and that it was the least well appointed place we have ever rented. There was one glass - one freaking glass. There were ONLY two crappy towels and not even a hand towel. What we discovered was that the water pressure was also an issue and once the hot water tank was emptied the water just cut out. The high temp on the tank - BTW - was warm.

But despite this - we moved ahead to explore. We found a great Mexican restaurant a couple blocks away, the Tube and Bus stations were nearby as were a couple of nice grocery stores. Although our flat was in a sketchy "hood" just a few blocks away were universities and we realized we had landed in the student ghetto - with a crappy host. Oh well.

Transportation ANYWHERE is a piece of cake. We continue to travel all over London with any combo of Tube Train and double decker busses - another icon of London. If you miss a bus, sit tight as there will be another one arriving within 2 or 3 minutes. They are clean inside and out and either hybrid or electric.

The tube stations are amazing - but most certainly are NOT handicapped assessable - many having no lift or even escalators. London is redoing its Tube Stations one at the time but the renovated stations are fabulous. The Tube Stations are deep and if they connect they are even deeper. Remember these stations served as bomb shelters during WWII. Since I still cannot read - Mark is completely in charge of getting us from point A to point B and I will say he has done a great job.

We have been doing all the touristy stuff - at least superficially. We saw the tower of London but felt no compulsion to go in it.

We saw Westminster and Big Ben and Buckingham Palace - which surprised me.

I thought it was a lot bigger but later I Googled an aerial photo and turns out it IS a lot bigger.

Buckingham Palace sits on a huge plot of land much of which is a park open to the public. The fences and gates are opulent and the side walks are ringed with small black metal posts all marked with this:

Not to mention ALL the money of the UK and ALL the British commonwealths - like Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica to mention only a few.. There is a bit of a controversy here about the cost of Queen Elizabeth's funeral - but I'm guessing that will pale with the cost of everything that has to been changed. I think an apostrophe mark and the word "son" would do just fine. King Charles III is not exactly a spring chicken so a LOT OF WORK for a short time is my guess. But this is NOT my decision - thankfully.

We had done a little museum hopping as well. We started in the Museum of London, because we were exploring and saw it. It was truly enjoyable and presented a look at London from ice age times to present. I knew the Romans were here but I thought the entire Roman component was very well done including windows that overlooked the 2000 year old city walls- nice touch.

The most impressive museum we visited was The British Museum the repository of all the ancient artifacts of the world. NOW - I will say that I had a little chip on my shoulder about this museum since when you go to visit the actual sites you will often see a sign indicating that most of the historic artifacts of this area can be seen in London - but I'm feeling better now that I have actually been there.

Apparently in the 1820s when archaeologist were working hard to save things for posterity, many governments could care less. And that was exactly what was happening with areas like Athens - home of the Parthenon - which was ruled by the Ottoman Empire.
