Cambridges walking their children to school is ‘living proof’ Meghan ‘lied’
September 08, 2022 - 10:09PM
Youtuber and commentator Daisy Cousens says the footage of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge walking their children to school was “charming” but reminded her of one of Meghan Markle’s comments.
“Really what hit me was Meghan Markle’s comments she made in her interview with “The Cut” last week,” Sky News host Andrew Bolt.
“She said if she took Archie to school in the UK, there would be a press pen of 40 people snapping pictures, as she put it.”
Ms Cousens said this was a “lie” from Ms Markle as there are strict rules around taking photographs of Royal children when they are on their way to school.
She said photographers can only follow the Royals on the first day of school and are only allowed two cameras – one for still photographs and the other for video.
“So now we have a week after she made those stupid comments living proof that Royal children of some of the most senior Royals – who are infinitely more interesting than Meghan and Harry – going to school,” she said.
“Yep, it seemed to be those two cameras, the video and the photography.”

In Like a Lemon, Out Like a Lime ² (The Long-Awaited Fabulous Sequel)
Ten years ago this week, in late March of 2012 back in the now only dimly-remembered before times (before the war… before the pandemic… before the failure of American democracy…), we released a mix of garage rock/punk/etc. tunes entitled, for no reason other than that it was late March and we like citrus fruits, “In Like a Lemon, Out Like a Lime.” Over the course of the intervening years it has become one of our all-time favorites and so, at long last, we present the long-awaited and fabulous sequel… An eclectic mix of 18 indie/garage/punk/rock tunes featuring many of the beloved artists who appeared in the original mix — Ty Segall, Colleen Green, Together Pangea, Gentleman Jesse, Mean Jeans, The Hussy, Cloud Nothings. Seth Bogart, Japandroids — as well as a number of excellent new entrants including Ditches, Shaylee, and Chris Brokaw.
N.B. For those wishing to compare and contrast (or just hear some more cool tunes), the (still excellent) original citrus-flavored 2012 garage rock mix can be found here.

David Cameron met vaccines minister shortly before award of contracts to company he advises
Tumblr media Tumblr media
David Cameron met vaccine minister Nadhim Zahawi with representatives of a private health firm which he advises, two months before the US company won public contracts worth up to £870,000.
The meeting, uncovered by Open Democracy, is listed in official government transparency records as taking place between Mr Zahawi, Mr Cameron and Illumina on 1 March 2021 “to discuss UK genomics sequencing”.
Shortly afterwards, on 29 April, Illumina Cambridge Ltd was awarded a £697,788 Public Health England contract to supply medical equipment, pharmaceuticals, personal care products and laboratory, optical and precision equipments. A week later on 7 May, a second PHE contract worth between £34,564 and £172,824 was awarded to the company for a similar range of supplies.
Mr Cameron was appointed as an adviser with Illumina in 2018. Applying for clearance to take up the role, he told the Advisory Committee on Business Appointments that he would be paid for working two to three days a month for the company.
His role involved assisting Illumina’s engagement with foreign governments and stakeholders as the company expanded into other countries, he said, and he would also be expected “to provide strategic advice; assist with business development, particularly in an international context; and perform other duties, as reasonably requested by the Board”.
Mr Cameron informed Acoba that he would not play any role in contract negotiations between Illumina and the DHSC or Genomics England – a DHSC-owned company which he set up while he was PM in 2013.

And Acoba said he assured them that while his role might involve “some very limited contact with UK ministers from time to time”, he “would not lobby ministers or the UK government in any way on behalf of Illumina or its partners”.
The revelation of the meeting comes shortly after a parliamentary inquiry found that Mr Cameron showed “a significant lack of judgement” in his intensive lobbying of government ministers on behalf of finance firm Greensill Capital, which was seeking involvement in Treasury coronavirus support schemes in 2020.
Labour’s deputy leader Angela Rayner told Open Democracy: “David Cameron’s behaviour is evidence that the rules that are supposed to regulate lobbying are completely unfit for purpose and need a radical and urgent overhaul.
“There appears to be nobody in government who the former prime minister has not lobbied in an effort to enrich himself and his clients during this pandemic.”
A spokesperson for Illumina said: “Illumina always follows the correct and necessary process in its negotiations with customers.
“We have worked with Genomics England since 2013, when we won a competitive tender process for the £78m contract for the 100,000 Genomes Project. Our ISO-accredited facilities in Cambridge were chosen by Genomics England as being the most appropriate in the UK in terms of being able to deliver this advanced genomics programme.
“The vast majority of David Cameron’s work with Illumina is outside the UK, representing the best practices of the UK in genomics to other countries.”
The Independent has reached out to DHSC, Public Health England and Mr Cameron’s office to request comment.

Facebook Privacy Scandal – A Privacy Breach That Calls For The First Information Privacy Law In The U.S.
Ashley Zhu, Vanderbilt University Class of 2022
May 21, 2019
Tumblr media
Are you using Facebook? If yes, have you ever worried that the comments or photos you posted on Facebook would be harvested by third party businesses without your consent? Have you ever worried that your private information would be leveraged as bargaining chips on the table of big tech companies? Or have you worried that your personal data would be used by politicians to influence election results?
If you have had those worries, unfortunately, there is evidence that your concerns have become reality. Facebook has been stuck in a series of privacy scandalsfor two years and is currently under federal investigation[1]. According to Business Insider, Facebook asked for email passwords and "harvested the email contacts of 1.5 million users without their knowledge or consent”when new users set up their Facebook account [2]. In addition, according to about 4,000 pages of leaked company documents, Facebook leveraged users’ personal data as bargaining chips to consolidate partnerships and combat competitors [3]. In order to develop and maintain partnerships, Facebook rewarded “favored companies by giving them access to the data of its users”[3]. For example, Facebook gave “Microsoft's search engine Bing access to see all of a user's friends without the user's consent, let Netflix and Spotify read a user's private messages and allowed Amazon to gather names and contact information”due to the money it spent on Facebook advertising and its partnership with Facebook to launch the Fire smartphone [4]. In order to combat competitors, “Facebook denied access to user data for a messaging app that had grown too popular and was viewed as a competitor, according to the documents.” [3]
Despite those disturbingprivacy violations that affect millions of users, one of the most infamous Facebook privacy leak is the Cambridge Analytica Scandal. In the scandal, a personality test on Facebook collected the data of 305,000 people who took the test and the public data of up to 87 million people whowere Facebook friends of those who took the test. The data was then sold to Cambridge Analytica, a political consultancy firm that allegedly used the data to psychologically profile U.S. voters. [5]

In spite of the series of Facebook privacy breach that tremendously undermine users’ privacy rights, the U.S. has no comprehensive information privacy lawsin effect currently. The absence of such a law makes it challenging for the federal government to regulatebig tech companies and penalize those breaking the privacy laws in order to protect people’s privacy rights.Given that there is no federal information privacy law in effect,Facebook’s data collection and handling practicesin the U.S. areonly regulated by the 2011 agreement between Facebook and the Federal Trade Commission.
To understand how the U.S. government regulates Facebook in the privacy arena, it is essential to introduce the Federal Trade Commission, its responsibilities and authorities, and its reaction to the recent Facebook privacy lapses. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is a federal agency with investigative and law enforcement authority to enforce both consumer protection and antitrust laws [6]. The consumer protection statutes enforced by the FTC grant it authority to regulate “unfair or deceptive acts or practices” (15 U.S.C. Sec. 45(a)(1)). In particular, the FTC’s enforcement power over “unfair practices” gives it authority to regulate and penalize big tech companies such as Facebook that commit privacy breaches. Following an investigation, theFTC may initiate an enforcement action if it has "reason to believe" that the law is being or has been violated [6].
In response to the series of Facebook’s privacy violations, the FTC has conducted an investigation and “renewed their calls for Congress to create a national privacy law that would regulate how big tech companies like Facebook and Google collect and handle user data” on May, 8th[7].If Congress responds to the FTC’s appeal by enacting the country’s first comprehensive information privacy law, the FTC will be granted more authority and policing power to regulate big tech companies while protectingpeople’s privacy rights.
Compared to the U.S. that has not passed any national information privacy laws, the EU passed General Data Protection Regulation that will go into effect on May, 25th. General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) replaces the outdated 1995 Data Protection Directive and “restricts the way businesses collect, store and export people’s personal data” [8].
GDPR highlights users’ consent, articulating that “processing personal data is generally prohibited, unless it is expressly allowed by law, or the data subject has consented to the processing” [9]. In order to ensure users give their consent voluntarily without ambiguity, GDPR requires companies to “replace long terms and conditions filled with legalese with simple-to-digest consent requests”[8]. Users are also given the “right to be forgotten,”“which means companies must delete someone’s data if they withdraw their consent for it to be held” [8]. The companies are also obliged by GDPR to make the process of withdrawing consent as easy as giving consent [8].
Moreover, GDPR prohibits companies from “collecting extra information at the point of sign-up just in case;” instead, they have to collect data for a specific business purpose and make the data subject informed about the purpose and how they will make use of the data [8]. If this requirement had taken effect prior to the privacy breach whereFacebookharvested the email contacts of 1.5 million users when they opened their Facebook account, it would have prevented this data violation effectively.
Finally, GDPR allows the regulators to fine up to 4% of the companies’ global revenue. Therefore, ifFacebook whose global revenue is $55.8 billion in 2018 breaks the terms of GDPR after it takes effect on May, 25th, it will face a fine of up to $2.2 billion [10]. The fine will bepredominantlyhigher than the highest fine Facebook has ever received for a privacy breach– the fine UK imposed on Facebook for the Cambridge Analytica Scandal which was merely£500,000($645,150) [11].
The emphasis on users’ consent, stricter conditions on data collection, and heavy fines dictated by GDPR provide greater protection for the privacy rights of the EU residents. In general, GDPR is one of the strictest information privacy laws in effect in the world. Thus, it provides a good example that American legislators can model the country’s first information privacy law after by learning from its effectiveness and avoiding its potential drawbacks after GDPR takes effect on May, 25th
It is obvious that a strict U.S. information privacy law comparable to GDPR is desperately in need to protect the privacy rights of U.S. users. The absence of such a law contributes to an imbalance between the power of big tech companies and that of users by giving companies unchecked freedom to collect user data and regulators feeble policing power to regulate and fine the data misuse. However, the good news is that the FTC is calling for the enactment of the country’s first information privacy law in the testimony before the Congress. It is easy to envision how the law will drastically challenge the imbalance of power by giving users much more protection against data collection without their giving consent. Hopefully, GDPR and the enactment of the first information privacy law in the U.S. will be the first step towards hope for privacy protection in the social media age.
