This wasn't supposed to happen.
That was Kiibo's first thought as the tragedy unfolded before him, too far away despite his new upgrades to do naught but watch. Now he stood motionless in front of the scene, staring in silence.
Shuichi... He had been in a terrible place at the worst possible time. Though Kiibo had stopped his assault on the school, as per the detective's request, that didn't prevent the buildings from breaking down on their own from the damage they had already sustained. A large chunk of concrete positioned directly above the area Shuichi was investigating had come loose, andโ€”
This wasn't supposed to happen.
Butโ€ฆ That wasn't really true, now was it? This was exactly what he wanted. To destroy this hell disguised as a school, to have his few remaining friends killedโ€ฆ All done by his hand.
It was better this way, wasn't it? To all die together, without the mental anguish of those so-called "motivations", that broke them down, little by little, until one soul snapped and did the unthinkable. Without the agony that came with investigating a loved one's murder, fond memories-turned painful flashing through your mind as you inspect their lifeless body for clues, knowing that those moments you shared together can never happen again. Without the torture of having to doubt the people you once called your friends only hours ago.
They were all going to die anyway if he let this Killing Game continue. How long would it have been until they were investigating Shuichi's death? Or his own? Speeding up the process was merely... A mercy kill.
But then why did it hurt so much?
It was somewhat funny, the way the emotions he had so desperately wished to achieve were now obstructing him from completing his mission. He wondered if it was ever the same for Miu, or Gonta, or Kaito, or Kokichi, or any of the others who had chosen to try to kill another, be it for the good of others or out of their own selfishness.
โ€ฆ
He didn't want to do any of this. He didn't want to be the one to kill his friends. But... It was something that needed to be done, and he knew that he was the only one able to do it, both physically and mentally.
No other attempts at stopping the killing game had worked. Contrary to what his inner voice may have once led him to believe, this was their only option.
Even... Even if it led to this.
...Shuichi...
I'm sorโ€”
A sudden blast erupted from behind, dragging him free from his thoughts. Right. The Exisals were still after him. He couldn't stand around idle for too long.
Truthfully, with Shuichi dead and his inner voice beginning to prove untrustworthy, Kiibo doubted that much would come out of this investigation. Still, he would keep the promise he made to Shuichi; to give his friends as much time to seek out the hidden truths of the school as he physically could without risking his own demise. It was the least he could do to honour his memory, after what he had done to him.
And then, when everything was over, when silence enveloped the barren wasteland where a cursed school once stood... That was when he would have time to mourn.
