Coolant Solution to prevent Head Gasket issue

The Fantic Caballero's 500cc engine is of Chinese origin, and the early versions often had reliability issues with the head gasket. This was improved in the Euro5 versions, and Euro4 models were also modified to enhance the cooling system and make the motorcycle more reliable.

But what is the underlying problem? The radiator appears to be adequately sized, and the fan (super silent!) is also sufficient.

In my opinion, the problem doesn't stem from the design of the engine itself. In fact, this Zongshen NC450 engine is also used in other motorcycles not imported into France, such as the RX4, and these models don't have head gasket problems. In my view, the issue lies in the fact that the cooling system is not pressurized.

Typically, in liquid-cooled motorcycles (at least all the ones I know), the coolant pressure increases as the engine heats up. The radiator cap only opens if the pressure becomes excessive, allowing the excess coolant to flow into the expansion tank. In cars, the expansion tank is also pressurized. In the case of the Caballero (at least Euro4), this is not the case. Everything operates at atmospheric pressure. Consequently, if the coolant passes through a very hot area (such as the cylinder head), it can boil locally. When it boils, it turns into vapor, and the hot part of the engine loses contact with the coolant, logically causing it to overheat. This increases the vapor, and it ultimately may lead to a blown head gasket. To prevent this, the cooling system is usually pressurized. At 2 bars of pressure, for example, the coolant doesn't boil at 100°C but at 120°C.

The upgrade applied by Fantic on Euro4 models includes a small valve that prevents the expansion tank from venting to the atmosphere. This pressurizes the cooling system, including colang liquid tank.

So, what can you do to further secure this system?

I discovered a coolant without water, with a very high boiling point, specifically designed for these uses or for older engines (without pressure?) or high-performance off-road motorcycles.

This is what I put in my Caballero. It's quite expensive (between €30 and €40 for 2 liters), but it's more than enough for the Caballero, and there's still plenty left for top-ups in the following years.

Now, I have peace of mind, and I'm ready to go far without any concerns.

Amélioration du refroidissement

Le moteur du 500 Caballero est d'origine chinoise et les premières versions ont souvent eu des problèmes de fiabilité de joint de culasse. Cela a été amélioré sur les versions Euro5, et il y a eu une reprise des Euro4 pour modifier le système de refroidissement et rendre la moto plus fiable.

Mais quel est le problème de fond? Le radiateur semble suffisamment dimensionné. Le ventilateur (super silencieux!) aussi.

A mon avis le problème ne vient pas de la conception du moteur lui même. D'ailleurs ce moteur Zongshen NC450 est aussi utilisé sur d'autres motos non importées en France comme la RX4, et ces modèles n'ont pas de problème de joint de culasse. A mon avis, le problème vient du fait que le système de refroidissement n'est pas sous pression.

Habituellement, sur les motos à refroidissement liquide (en tout cas toutes celles que je connais), le liquide de refroidissement monte en pression au fur et à mesure que le moteur chauffe. Le bouchon du radiateur ne s'ouvre que si la pression devient vraiment trop importante, pour laisser aller le surplus de liquide vers le vase d'expansion. Sur une voiture, le vase d'expansion est aussi sous pression. Dans le cas de la Caballero, ce n'est pas le cas. Tout est à la pression atmosphérique. Du coup, si l'eau passe a un endroit très chaud (dans la culasse), l'eau peut se mettre a bouillir localement. Si elle bout, elle se transforme en vapeur, et la partie chaude du moteur se retrouve sans contact avec le liquide de refroidissement et va donc logiquement surchauffer. Cela augmente la vapeur etc... cela finit avec un joint de culasse qui lâche. C'est pour éviter cela que le circuit de refroidissement est habituellement sous pression. A 2 bar de pression, par exemple, l'eau ne bout plus à 100°C mais 120°C.

Le kit qui permet d'améliorer les Euro4 inclue justement une petite vanne qui permet de ne pas mettre a l'air libre le vase d'expansion. Le circuit de refroidissement se retrouve donc bien sous pression.

Que faire pour sécuriser encore ce système? J'ai découvert un liquide de refroidissement sans eau, avec une température d'ébullition très haute, et spécifiquement fais pour ces usages là, ou pour des moteurs ancien (sans pression?) ou des motos de cross très poussés.

C'est ce que j'ai mis dans ma Caballero. Ca coûte assez cher (entre 30€ et 40€ pour 2 litres) mais c'est largement suffisant pour la Caballero, et il en reste même pas mal pour faire l'appoint les années suivantes.

Désormais, j'ai l'esprit serein et je suis prêt à partir loin sans arrière pensée.

VẬN HÀNH ÊM ÁI VÀ BỀN BỈ VỚI KHỐI ĐỘNG CƠ MITSUBISHI

Khác biệt với phần lớn các dòng xe có tải trọng dưới 1 tấn, TERA100 sở hữu khối động cơ xăng Mitsubishi 4G13S1 công nghệ Nhật Bản, hướng tới tính bền và tiết kiệm nhiên liệu. Động cơ đáp ứng chuẩn khí thải Euro4, máy xăng với chế độ phun xăng điện tử, vận hành êm ái và bền bỉ.

Xe đạt công suất 92 mã lực tại vòng tua máy 6.000 vòng/phút, mô-men xoắn cực đại 109 Nm tại 4.800 vòng/phút, kết hợp nhịp nhàng với hộp số sàn 5 cấp MR513, giúp xe vận hành êm ái, bền bỉ và tiết kiệm nhiên liệu, đảm bảo hiệu quả kinh tế tối ưu cho khách hàng trong quá trình sử dụng.

Mặt ga-lăng mạ crôm trau chuốt từ chất liệu đến thiết kế mang lại vẻ ngoài hiện đại, tinh tế cho sản phẩm này.
