Requested: Yes
Judas is upset about Mary unexpectedly requiring money from the treasure box so that they can buy some extra hygiene products. In an attempt to somewhat break the taboo around menstruation, you dare to open up to him about it.
His striking blue eyes are filled with frustration the moment Judas barges into the flat, startling you, Philip and Matthew, disturbing your chores in preparation of your next trip. The recently swept floor is soiled at once as he stomps towards his usual corner without shaking the dust off his sandals and sits down with a loud groan, running his hand over his face before he pinches the bridge of his nose, causing you to share a few unsure looks with your two friends sitting with you.
“Are you alright?” you break the sudden tense silence whereas it had been pleasant before, and Judas huffs, turning to you. Despite the fact that you always tend to drown in those beautiful eyes of his, you can see the deep annoyance flash behind them, not mustered towards you, but another situation you can’t simply ignore.
“I had everything sorted out,” he says with an edge of indignance to his tone, taking his ledger from the bag that sits on his hip, “All the transactions, all donations, I’ve had everything perfectly divided so that we would have enough money to get food until we reach the next major city. It’s what I do, right?! Anyways, I was just on my way to speak to Jesus so that He could take a look at my work in case He didn’t agree with my spendings, and what do you think? Mary shows up, telling me she needs money.” 
You slowly shake your head, frowning in question. “What for?”
His nose dusts red more from embarrassment than anger.
“First, she didn’t want to tell me, but when I pressured her she told me it was for… Issues of feminine nature.”
Matthew nearly drops the pen he is holding and Philip halts in his motion of polishing the table, but you aren’t as fazed. “That’s it?”
“That’s it?! Do you know how much that costs? If we are on the road, cleaning out these rags will take ages! And what if she makes any of us unclean by accident, huh? So, I gave Mary only a little money and told her to fix the rest on her own.”
Your gut sinks. It’s unintentional ignorance, you are aware of that, so your quick flash of anger soon shrinks into a sense of understanding. It wasn’t a topic that was discussed with Jewish men other than the rules it entails when it occurs, but the ins and outs and struggles that came with it were never discussed.  
Sitting up straight, you turn to Philip, who locks eyes with you almost immediately, Wordlessly, you nod at Matthew, then at the door, and he takes the hint. 
“Matt, why don’t we head to market for some fresh yeast? I just threw out the old stuff, it had become wet during transportation and has thus become unusable.”
Matthew questioningly blinks at Philip. “Can’t you go on your own? That way I can still finish this before we leave tomorrow, otherwise I am unsure when I’ll be able to–”
“Matthew, let’s go.” Philip states, firmer this time, not even making it sound like a suggestion anymore. You give him a thankful smile and he nods, knowing that you’ll need some time along with the keeper of the purse, who has spread out his documents to make last minute changes, something you know he is not fond of.
Judas, like many others, deeply valued control. If not over the circumstances, then at least over the money, something where his talents lay.
With a few spare coins that Philip held in his pocket, the former tax collector and he head out to the market, leaving you and Judas be. As soon as the door clicks shut, you stand to head over to his side, dragging your chair with you so that you can sit with him.
He looks up from his work with raised brows, uncertain of what you want. Instead of verbally telling him to put down his pen, you pry it from his fingers and put it flat on the table.
“Let’s have a little chat, okay?”
He shrugs. “Okay? What about?”
“About the way you approached Mary about that so-called issue. That is not okay.”
Judas’ brow knits together. “What do you mean? You are familiar with Jewish law, right? And what it means when a woman is bleeding and what we should—”
“I am aware, Judas, thank you.” you cut him off, “But that is not what I mean.”
There is genuine puzzlement on his features. “Then what is the problem?”
You sigh and momentarily look at his hand that lays flat on the table. For a second, you consider putting yours over it.
“I had somehow expected you to be more understanding about it,” you confess with slight disappointment in your voice, “I mean, you’ve got a sister whom I’m sure has complained about these monthly feminine issues during your teenage years.”
Judas scoffs. “Oh, Devorah did complain alright. I wouldn’t hear the end of it. Our eema used to make her broth made from leftover scraps, but when my tummy hurt, she never gave me that same treatment. It was pretty unfair if you ask me, and–”
“Judas–”
“–honestly, I feel like Mary should have just gone to you to ask about–”
“Judas!”
“–These products, so that you could have helped me sort out the–”
You slam with your fist on the table, louder than intended, and the pottery on top of it rattles at the disturbance; the sound makes even you startle, but it successfully shuts him up.
With lowered brow, you grit your teeth as you eye him in annoyance. He gulps, lips falling askew slightly as he attempts to find the words to calm your flare of anger. 
“You look so cute when you’re angry.”
“Don’t even think about it, Jude.”
His eyes are wide as he stares at you, swallowing thickly. “Sorry,” he whispers. 
“I really like you, Judas, but sometimes, you lack certain tact. Your sister. Mary. Me. All women struggle with this issue every month. I will not hold your ignorance against you for nobody has ever taught you this, but perhaps it is time to enlighten you on menstruation, because this will probably not be the only time anyone will ever come your way to ask for money for specific products of said nature. Especially when we’re on the road, it can cause serious trouble if we don’t carry enough.”
Judas nods, cheeks flushed pink in shame. 
“I-I’m sorry, I just…” He stumbles over his words, does not find the right ones, and in turn shuts his mouth again.
You sigh, now fully putting your hand on his, and his gaze shoots to it. He doesn’t withdraw, instead flexes his fingers slightly as he awaits you speaking up.
“Menstruations are different for every woman,” you explain, “To me, every month is different. Sometimes I have a heavy flow, another I’ll have immense cramps. One day I barely notice it at all and other days I want to curl up into a ball and sleep all week. It’s not fun.”
Judas hums, blush darkening. “Right.”
“When you’re bleeding from these parts of your body, it’s not comfortable. It’s embarrassing enough as is, even admitting to menstruating is shameful, let alone having to confess to a man that you are because he otherwise wouldn’t give you money to buy necessary absorbent fabrics to bind underneath your skirts.”
The keeper of the purse lets out a sound of slight frustration – at his own prior behaviour, you immediately come to learn as he lowers his eyes in guilt – and slips his hand out from underneath yours. 
“It’s perfectly natural so there is no need to make a problem out of it.”
“You’re right,” Judas mutters, “I shouldn’t have pressed Mary about telling me where she needed the money for. I’ll…” he swallows his pride, “I’ll find her later to apologise.”
A soft smile tugs at your lips. “Good,” you tell him, “Thank you.”
“Thank you ,” he breathes in return, “I-I mean, for telling me about it. It has never been explained to me in such a way and I just never took the time to imagine what it must be like. I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay,” you tell him, taking his hand in yours again.
He dares to lace his fingers through yours, a blush of nicer nature now dusting his face. “A-And if there is anything I can do for you whenever you’re… Well… You know, when you’re suffering with these symptoms, just… Just tell me how I can help you, okay? I want to do better.”
“You’re already improving, Judas.” you reassure him, “And we’ve got plenty of time to keep working on ourselves.” His eyes lock with yours and your heart flutters inside your chest, butterflies setting your system atingle. “For what it’s worth, you look pretty cute when you’re angry, too.”
He scoffs a laugh and smiles sweetly, shaking his head. “I wasn’t really angry, I was just… Frustrated within my ignorance.”
You tilt your head slightly and hum. “That’s one way to put it.”
A brief silence falls between you and Judas is the one to break it.
“I’ll go find Mary,” he says, “To apologise. Would you like to check the balance after that? I’ll bring some more money with me to give to her.”
You nod as he stands, rummaging through the purse before pulling out a few coins. 
On his way out, you grab his hand as he brushes past you, saying his name. He halts, turning to face you, and he looks at you questioningly.
“Yes?”
“I’m proud of you.” you say.
For a second or two, he stares at you. Then, he lets out a pleasant hum, squeezes your fingers and reluctantly lets it go before heading out of the flat, rushing to find Mary so that he may quickly return to you again.
