Francis Henderson Sr’s Family
i’m back for a little bit to share what i’ve learned about Francis Henderson Sr’s wife and kids after he moved to Newport, Rhode Island. i am unsure if any of this information has been discovered and shared in the time i’ve been gone, and if so, i’m sorry for repeating information. i haven’t been on Tumblr since my last post, iirc, and i don’t feel like checking, i’m sorry!
For quick background, in Francis Sr’s letters to John Adams, he says that he is living in Rhode Island and briefly visiting South Carolina. Reminiscences of Abbeville also states that Francis Sr lived in Newport and vacationed in South Carolina during the summer. It also states that after he left Junior in Scotland and moved to Rhode Island, he got remarried and had children.
The first of this information is a Newport census report from 1850.
Tumblr media
Listed is a 71-year-old man named Francis Henderson, who it says was born in Scotland, which matches Frances Laurens’ ex-husband. Included in the household is a 53-year-old woman named Elizabeth, a woman named Janet, and a man named Robert, both in their twenties. Also included is a woman named Jane Armstrong, who it says was born in Ireland.
Using this information, I was able to find a Find A Grave connected. The cemetery the grave is connected in is located in Newport.
Tumblr media
The grave lists three people, Francis Henderson, his wife Elizabeth Gouffran, and their daughter Janet Carruthers. There is a discrepancy, as their graves say Francis died at 80 on March 24, 1853, and Elizabeth died at 75 on March 7, 1855, while the census states they were 71 and 53 in 1850. Janet’s age is also discrepent, but I’m inclined to believe these are the same people, and I’m more inclined to believe that their graves display their accurate ages. This estimates his birth year as 1773 / 1774, meaning he was 21 or 22 when he married 18-year-old Frances Laurens.
Find A Grave connects this grave to that of a man named William H. Henderson, born in 1816. If this is the son of Francis Henderson and Elizabeth Gouffran, the H likely stands for Hoggan, as another grave found is for a nine-year-old girl named Elizabeth Hoggan Henderson, the “eldest daughter of Francis & Elizabeth G. Henderson.” A grave for a Robert J., who was listed on the 1850 census, is not connected. However, a Newport record does list the death of a Robert James Henderson, born est. 1826 and died in 1914, and is described as the son of Francis Henderson and Elizabeth G. Henderson.
With this knowledge, my personal current belief is that after arriving in Rhode Island, Francis Henderson Sr remarried to Elizabeth Gouffran, and they had at least three children, possibly four or more, including daughters named Elizabeth and Janet, a son named Robert, and possibly another son named William. Unlike Francis Junior, all of these children remained in Newport, Rhode Island. There is no evidence that, unlike their father, they vacationed in South Carolina as they are not mentioned in Reminiscences despite it otherwise being very information heavy. They likely never left / moved away from Newport, unlike their older half-brother.

Things I just found out:
- Francis Henderson Jr (John Laurens’s grandson) was baptised at St Marylebone Parish Church, Marylebone Road, London, England
- Frances Laurens and Francis Henderson got married at  St Clement Danes Church which is RIGHT near Middle Temple so maybe she was like wanting her dad to be there in spirit.
- Frances Laurens was also baptised in the same church where her parents got married:  Saint Andrew Undershaft, London on St Mary Axe
- Frances and James Cunnington got married at  Saint Botolph Without Aldersgate

Quote
But just at that seemingly propitious period, he [Francis Henderson Jr] learned of the existence of his mother, whom he supposed had died at his birth, and with the message there came to much for him; his proud heart broke and though caring not for the bowl he sought refuge in it from thence until the grave closed over him.
‘Reminiscences of Abbeville’ in the Abbeville Press and Banner, 19 April 1876
Francis Henderson Jr was the son of Frances Laurens (daughter of John Laurens) and Francis Henderson Sr. The pair separated in 1801, just a year after Francis Jr’s birth, and Francis Sr gained custody of the child. He then apparently left his son with relatives in Scotland and returned to America to oversee financial affairs while Laurens lived in England for the rest of her life. According to this, Francis Jr believed his mother died in childbirth, and after finding out she was still alive he started drinking, something which would contribute to his premature death in 1847.

Images of Chatham County Wills and Estates
Chatham County was established in 1771 from Orange County, having been named for William Pitt in 1759, the first Earl of Chatham. It was Pitt who served as the British Prime Minister from 1766 to 1768 and opposed harsh colonial policies. The earliest known settlers were Quakers from England who settled along the Haw and Eno rivers. In 1907, parts of Chatham County and Moore County were combined to form Lee County. The county seat is in Pittsboro, North Carolina and Chatham County is part of the Durham-Chapel Hill area.Among the first settlers were the families of Armistead, Alston, Dodd, Kemp, Edwards, Womack, Brewer, Lambeth, Taylor, Fooshee, Waddell, and Patrick.Chatham County Probate Records available to members of North Carolina Pioneers Images of Wills and Estates 1798 to 1819 Alston, James to Phillip I did more surface level research on Francis Henderson Sr's family. I did some basics back in March, which you can see here. Something else that is important for later information is the research into the possible descendants of Francis Henderson Jr, which you can find here. With new evidence that's popped up, I think it's even more likely that Francis Henderson Jr possibly had a child.
To start, as far as I'm aware, there seems to only be evidence of four children by Francis Sr and his second wife, Elizabeth. William Hoggan Henderson (1816 - 1897), Elizabeth Hoggan Henderson (d. 1828 aged nine), Janet Henderson Carruthers (1822 - 1856), and Robert James Henderson (c. 1826 - c. 1914).
William married a woman named Mary (1817 - 1906). The couple only had one child, Anna, born 1849 and died 1855 at the age of six.
Janet obviously married due to her surname, but I couldn't find any information regarding her marriage, or if she had any children. It's likely that the marriage was short-lived and childless, as she died at 34 and was buried with her parents.
Robert has the most sources out of all of his siblings (including Francis Jr). Robert married a woman named Haley Russel Salisbury. Apparently, she was born in France. They had at least three children, a daughter named Mary Phillips Henderson, born c. 1862, and another daughter born in 1865 probably named Isabel Henderson. They had another son, William H Henderson, born c. 1869.
I couldn't find any later sources for Mary or Isabel (but to be completely honest, I didn't look too hard), but I found one for William. He married a woman named either named Bertha or Elizabeth and had four children. Mary, born c. 1892, William, born c. 1895, George, born c. 1900, and....Mahala, born 1906.
Now, if you read the research I did on the supposed descendants of Francis Jr, you probably had the same reaction I did, of "Hmm??? Mahala???" While I initially wrote it off as a wild coincidence, when I went back to all of my previous research on Mahala (who, for the uninitiated, was allegedly the only surviving grandchild of Francis Jr), it actually lines up shockingly well. Mahala, her husband Coleman, and their children all moved to Rhode Island sometime between 1898 and 1900. I even pointed out in my post that the fact Mahala and her family decided to go to Rhode Island, where their supposed great-grandfather's family lived, was interesting. And Mahala isn't exactly a common name, even in this time period.
I don't know. It seems pretty likely to me that Mahala got into contact with her maybe-cousins and decided to go live with them. It's obviously just speculation; it could just be a wild coincidence.
I haven't done any further research because I was just eager to share after being gone for apparently eight months.

Wow Frances got married to James Cunnington in 1853 so she was 76 when she got married. So what happened between her being married to Francis Henderson when she was 18 and then when she was 20 she had Francis Henderson Jr and then she kind of divorced Francis Henderson. So between 20 ish and 76 was she single or gay or what?

I mean to cast no personal reflections upon Francis sr, except upon his personal appearance. He was certainly the ugliest man in Abbeville or elsewhere, five feet four inches high, shaped like a barrel, with not a feature to plead in extenuation. He was not even intelligent in general or specially; and if he was a businessman he had the poorest way of showing it in his own transactions; if he had ever known much, he had forgotten it in less time than any man I ever knew. He had but little confidence in anybody and less in himself.
‘Reminiscences of Abbeville’ in the Abbeville Press and Banner, 19 April 1876
This section of the article was describing Francis Henderson Sr, whom Frances Laurens eloped with and had one son, Francis Henderson Jr. It’s pretty easy to see why the elopement was a shock and the Ramsay family disapproved of it just from this single description of him, to be honest.

I did (admittedly surface) level research on the possible grandchildren of Francis Henderson Jr. Whether or not they are his grandchildren, I think it’s still interesting to learn about and tomorrow or in the following days I’ll be posting something about Edward, his wife, and daughter, that I think is important to understanding the political climate of race in 1870s.
An 1870 census includes Edward (Francis’ possible son), a woman named Hattie, and two children: Mahala, five, and Anna, three. I assumed Hattie was Harriett, Edward’s wife, since she’s younger than Edward and thus not his mother Hattie McLaren. However, her birth year conflicts with a later census saying Harriett was born four years later, and I’m more inclined to believe that latter census. All four are described with an outdated term for mixed race.
Tumblr media
An 1880 census includes Edward again, along with Harriett, his wife. Edward’s job his listed as a carpenter (although we already knew that) and Harriet is a seamstress. Also listed in the census is 75-year-old Hattie McLaren, Edward’s mother. She’s listed as a widow. Also included is Mahala, now a 14-year-old student. Unfortunately, Anna is not listed, but a two-year-old girl named Isabel, labelled Edward’s daughter, is. I couldn’t find any further sources for either Anna or Isabel. It says that Edward and Harriet cannot read or write. Again, everyone in the family is described as mixed race.
Tumblr media
This where the sources for Edward stop, but Mahala’s continue. I’m not going to list all of the sources because there’s a lot, but I’ll list a census and give a rundown. She was married by 1888 to a man named Coleman Dunlap (b. 1860), and had seven sons (Edward (, James, Cecil, Ernest, Harold, and Jessie), and one daughter (Eunice). Sometime between 1898 and 1900, the family moved to Rhode Island. Interestingly, this is where Francis Henderson Sr, who would’ve been Mahala’s great-grandfather, lived. The 1900 census (listed below) also gives us some nice information such as Mahala’s birth year, 1865. Unlike previous census reports, where there were more descriptions for race, people are only labelled as white or black, with Mahala, her husband, and their children falling into the latter label. Coleman Dunlap would end up passing away sometime before 1930, as the 1930 census says she’s a widow living with her unmarried son Harold. They are labelled black. A 1935 census says that Mahala is able to read and/or write English, and that at some point in her life she suffered from Measles. Interestingly enough, she’s actually labelled white. The only labels were white, black (though it’s put as an outdated term), and other. In the 1940 census, she is still living with Harold, although this time Harold’s aunt is also living with them. Unlike the 1930 census, both Mahala and Harold are labelled white. The 1950 census includes Mahala, Harold, Harold’s aunt, and a lodger. This time, Mahala and Harold are labelled with an outdated term for black. Apparently, she died in 1960, but I haven’t found a proper source for this. If that’s true, she would’ve lived to an astonishing 96-years-old.
Tumblr media
Later, I want to bring attention to a story in “Hurrah for Hampton!” I was going to include it here, but it complicated the post so I’ll try to get around to that tomorrow or in a few days. Whether or not Edward, Mahala, and the rest of their family are descendants of Francis Henderson Jr aside, I feel that this story is really important in seeing the brutality against people of color in the 1870s, especially when politics got in the way. Just giving the rundown, in it, Edward is threatened by a trial-justice with a pistol, his daughter Mahala, a ten-year-old, is whipped, and his wife Harriett was threatened with being whipped.
I don’t want to end this post on that note, so I’ll add a nice little fact I found. Mahala’s only daughter, Eunice, died at 20/21 in 1915. Later that year, Mahala’s oldest son Edward had his first daughter, and he named her Eunice. I thought that was bittersweet. This also brings up that, again if Edward was Francis’ son, there are descendants of John Laurens still alive today.

In 1795 I married the orphan daughter and only child of the late Lieut. Colo. John Laurens of South Carolina, by whom I have one child living,—a Son,—now of age and with me, having finished his Education at the University of Edinburgh.
Francis Henderson Sr to Former President John Adams, 3 January 1822
"...I have one child living...” implies that Frances Laurens and Francis Henderson Sr had more children than just Francis Henderson Jr but they died, likely in childbirth or soon after. I wonder if that’s where Reminiscences of Abbeville got Francis Jr’s birth year wrong, since a baptism record states he was born 1797 that they mistook him with a stillborn infant, or if Francis Jr died after he was baptized and they named their second son born in 1800 after their dead son. It’s interesting to think about, even if there’s no proof beyond this one quote by Francis Sr

Any reminiscences of mine of Abbeville of old would be grossly imperfect and partial, that omitted the two Hendersons, Francis senior and Francis junior - father and son. My account of the former is, that he was born in Scotland, and made his way to London when a young man, whether with or without family prestige I know not. He became, however, an officer in the Bank of England, and must have occupied a fine social position to have met there, on a visit to her relatives, the beautiful, accomplished and wealthy Miss Laurens, of Charleston, S.C. She was the only child and heir of Col. John Laurens, who fell (a historical fact,) in a skirmish in South Carolina at the close of the revolutionary war. Col. John was the only surviving child and heir of his father, Col. Henry Laurens, and was the aid and special friend of Gen. Washington. [...]  The marriage afterwards referred to was one of those concordant disconcordancies, anomalies, or freaks of Venus that occur once in a while, and I never think of it without being reminded of the remark of the eccentric Judge Dooly, of Georgia, who once said, that "If there were any two things God did not foreknow, they were, who a woman would marry, and what would be the verdict of a petty jury in Georgia." This remark fell out just after a petty jury had rendered a verdict of manslaughter for stealing a hatchet. I have heard further that the former was impressed upon him by the action of a pretty and sensible girl "kicking" the speaker and taking instead a stupid vagabond. However, I mean to cast no personal reflections, upon Francis, sr., except upon his personal appearance. He was certainly the ugliest man in Abbeville or elsewhere, five feet four inches high, shaped like a barrel, with not a feature to plead in extenuation. He was not even intelligent in general or specially; and if he was a business man he had the poorest way of showing it in his own transactions; if he had ever known much, he had forgotten it in less time than any man I ever knew. He had but little confidence in anybody and less in himself. He was a lawyer's client and never moved without him; wouldn't sign a receipt for [___ ___] without the inspection and advice of his attorney. He was the  [___ ____] man ever seen, and it was [____] inflection to be in close and constant proximity to him. Meeting him in the morning you had to shake [____] and tell him how you were and at ever encounter during the same day you had to stop and tell him how you were "by this time." [....]. But the point to reach is, that Miss Laurens, with fortune, fame and rank at her feet, waved them off and married little ugly Frank Henderson. This must have occured about the year 1800. They lived together about a year, during which time young Frank was born. [I suppose he was born in London and it was so understood in Abbeville, as I several times heard him say his vote was challenged at Cedar Springs in '30 or '32 for evidence that he was 'civilised.' The husband and wife spent the second year or a part of it, in Paris, and quarrelled and filed bills and cross-bills for divorce, with evidneces that looked ugly for both. I  do not know whether the battle was in England , France or South Carolina; no dissolution of the marriage tie was granted but the child was awarded to the father, and also the trusteeship of the estate, the wife being allowed an annuity of $1800, and the balance of income divided between father and son. My understanding is, that the father placed his son in Scotland with his relatives and came himself to the United States to manage the estate, making his residence at Newport, R.I., where he again married and raised a family, spending the winter in Charleston and Abbevilles, leasing and renting the property. The wife remained in England and was living at an advanced age 26 or 28 years ago. Frank junior, was graduated at Edinburgh College and afterwards went through and graduated also at one of the first German colleges and travelled a year or two. He then came to Charleston and read law with Jas. L. Pettigrew, or another, and was admitted after a most brilliant examination and the highest hopes entertained of his. (This I learned from the lips of one who studied and was admitted with him.) But just at that seemingly propitious period, he learned of the existence of his mother, whom he he supposed had died at his birth, and with the message there came too much for his; his proud heart broke, and thought caring not for the bowl he sought refuge in it from thence until the grave closed him. When I first saw him in 1834 he appeared to be between 30 and 35 years of age, and had reached his quart per day; in 1840 he could 'run' it, and to the end there was no difficulty in disposing of it. He made Abbeville his home and never left it but three times that I remember - twice he spent the summers at Flat Rock, N.C., and about 1836 he went to Washington. His father was trying to get reimbursed for a large sum expended by the elder Laurens in aid of the first 'rebellion,' and supposed his presence would aid it. [...] Afterwards he weakened rapidly and required aid at the end of day sittings and on the 'quarter stretch' he had to read and drink mostly in bed. He went under in 1847. How a man could drink so much, so persistently and so long, is a puzzle. My explanation is this: he in the first place inherited a perfect physical development, strengthened by the school and college discipline in Europe and he was free from all irregularities or habits taxing the system until perhaps 27 years of age with the basis of a good constitution established; again he always ate his meals and slept; and drank only the purest spirits, and never before breakfast on an empty stomach. [...] NOTE BY THE EDITOR - Henry Laurens was President of the Continental Congress, and a merchant of Charleston and one of the most distinguished citizens of South Carolina, and being sent by the Revolutionary authorities on a mission to Holland was captured on the high seas by the Bris-ish and was required to spend a long time (four years) in the Tower of London, where he wrote his famous journal. Before the Revolutionary war broke out, he had sent his son John Laurens to London to complete his education. His father, Henry Laurens, had a partner in business in Lodnon by the mane of Manning with whom his son John lived whilst in London. An intimacy grew up between John and the daughter of Mr. Manning, which resulted in his marrying her, and as fame reports it, he never saw his wife after the marriage ceremony, but embarked that very day for Paris, where he was staying when the Revolutionary war broke out. As his father was being carried a captive to the Tower of London, John passed him at sea on his way to join the rebel army. He arrive and became an 'aid de camp' of Washington, and afterwards Lieutenant Colonel of Lee's Legion, after the resignation of Light Horse Harry, and in endeavouring to check a foraging party on the Cumbahee River in this State was killed - the very last man who fell in the Revolutionary war; and it had always been said that he sought his death. He was accomplished and gallant and for him our neighboring County, 'Laurens,' was named. In the mean time, the wife he had left, before she doffed the bridal attire, was delivered of a daughter, Frances Eleanor Laurens, who had a career as remarkable as any lady we ever read of in romance of story. We will not publish all we have heard of her but it connects with our subject, and we state she fell heir, during her life, to the famous Laurens Lands in Abbeville County under the will of her distinguished grandfather Henry Laurens, of which Dr Ramsay, the historian, was executor.  She married one Francis Henderson, a Scotchman, then living in London, and said to have been a clerk in the Bank of England. They had one son, Francis Henderson, junior. The marriage was unhappy. W have heard much of one Sir Harry Vane Temple in this connection, but this deponent knows nothing of his own knowledge and therefore forbears to state any more. Suffice it to say that Francis Henderson, senior and his wife Frances Eleanor were divorced in London and by the articles of separation, the quondam husband Francis Henderson, had secured to him during his wife's life, the usufruct of the Laurens lands in Abbeville County and the Hampstead marshes near Charleston. The life of Mrs. Henderson was much prolonged - she lived to quite an old age - said to near a hundred - and died within the last few years. In order to look after these lands and collect his rents, Mr Henderson came to Abbeville and lived with a Scotchman then here, John McLaren. Afterwards he had his son Francis Henderson, junior with him, and these are the people of who our firend, the ex-Abbevillian writes so pleasantly.
‘Reminiscences of Abbeville’ in the Abbeville Press and Banner, 19 April 1876 [x]
Okay first of all this is all very interesting and I love learning about Frances. Secondly, I just wanted to address a few inaccuracies: the article says that John was the ‘only surviving child’ of Henry Laurens when Martha, Mary, Henry Jr and James were still alive so that’s not true. It also says that John left Martha on their wedding day when they got married October 26th 1776 and he left 2 months later on the 27th of December 1776 and Martha gave birth sometime in January 1777. Further regarding this subject it says that Martha gave birth right after the wedding which isn’t true at all, she gave birth 2/3 months later.
I love the fact that it says ‘a historical fact’ like we aren’t just making this up to feel sad reader, it really happened and as if all of this isn’t historical fact.
Frances died in 1860 at aged 83 so this article was done 16 years after her death.

Tysm for the list! I was wondering, would you mind doing the same for Frances? :)
Thank YOU for sending me asks. It feels like I have more of a purpose than just randomly posting when I’m actually helping people. I’ve found out quite a bit about Frances lately so hopefully I can help you.
Her name was Frances Eleanor Laurens. Eleanor comes from her paternal grandmother Eleanor Delamere Ball Laurens. There’s no one called Frances in either the Laurens or Manning families. It does mean ‘free one’ though.
She was often called Fanny as a nickname
She was born in January 1777 to Martha Manning Laurens and John Laurens
She was born with a swollen thigh and hip which her grandfather said was due to the carelessness of the nurse who delivered her.
She lived with her mother Martha in Chelsea, London at the beginning of her life
Baptised at Saint Andrew Undershaft, London on St Mary Axe.
On the 28th January 1777 John Baker visited Martha and Frances.
On the 29th November 1780 Martha took Frances to meet her grandfather Henry Laurens in the Tower of London
27th August 1782: Her father John Laurens died leaving her orphaned age 5.
Between when Martha (her mother) died and when she was adopted by Martha Laurens (her aunt) I’m not sure who looked after her. It could’ve been her grandfather William Manning.
Around 1784, when she was 7, she lived in Bath with Martha Laurens (her aunt), her 14 year old aunt Polly (aka Mary) and her great aunt Mary.
Also around this time is when Henry Laurens began a long process to get Frances the money that John had earned from being a soldier.
11th May 1785: Laurens women arrive in Charleston
Martha (aunt) acts as Frances’s mother and educates her using Benjamin Rush’s Thoughts Upon Female Education.
1792: Henry Laurens died. Left his plantation at Long Canes in Ninety-Six District to a 15 year old Frances.
1795: 18 year old Frances marries Francis Henderson at St Clement Danes Church in London, England which is really close to Chancery Lane and Middle Temple.
According to familyseach.org Francis Henderson Jr was baptised in 1797 so he would have to have been born then but according to Greg Massey and this source ‘Reminiscences of Abbeville’ in the Abbeville Press and Banner, 19 April 1876 he was born in 1800.
Francis Henderson Jr (John Laurens’s grandson) was baptised at St Marylebone Parish Church, Marylebone Road, London, England
1801: Frances and Francis Sr separated. Francis Sr got custody of their son.
Francis Sr went to America, Francis Jr was sent to Scotland and believed that his mother had died. Francis Sr seemed to only really care about getting the money that was owed to Frances and their heirs of John Laurens.
The Hendersons (not Frances) kept petitioning to Congress to release the money. But Frances wasn’t there so Congress refused.
In 1832 after many unsuccessful attempts the Hendersons and Frances managed to get the money that was owed to John Laurens.
14th July 1832: John Laurens’s heirs received $7335.86.
1847: Francis Jr died
10 Jun 1853: Married James Cunnington when she was 76 at  Saint Botolph Without Aldersgate
Described as: ‘ the beautiful, accomplished and wealthy Miss Laurens, of Charleston, S.C ‘

Buncombe Co. NC Genealogies and Histories #northcarolinapioneers
Buncombe County Wills and Estates
Buncombe county was formed in 1791 from parts of Burke County and Rutherford Counties. It was named for Edward Buncombe, a colonel in the American Revolutionary War, who was captured at the Battle of Germantown. The large county originally extended to the Tennessee line. Many of the settlers were Baptists, and in 1807 the pastors of six churches including the revivalist Sion Blythe formed the French Broad Association of Baptist churches in the area. In 1808 the western part of Buncombe County became Haywood County. In 1833 parts of Burke County and Buncombe County were combined to form Yancey County, and in 1838 the southern part of what was left of Buncombe County became Henderson County. In 1851 parts of Buncombe County and Yancey County were combined to form Madison County. Finally, in 1925 the Broad River township of McDowell County was transferred to Buncombe County.
