She’s loved him all her life… but will he be there when she needs him the most? Disheartened and adrift after being written out of a hit TV show, actor Aidan Flaherty returns to his family’s historic winery, where he’s invested some of the fortune he’s made. As the holidays approach, Aidan becomes intrigued with the old showboat that’s dry-docked just east of town… and even more intrigued with the daughter of his former mentor, who now owns it. He decides to buy the boat and restore it to its former glory. Single mom Holly Santos is back in River’s Edge after her divorce and she is over men in general and actors in particular. If she could only get rid of her father’s old showboat, a source of fascination for her son, Mateo. She never expects her old crush to walk into her tea shop or the fireworks that happen every time they’re in the same room. Can Aidan convince her that he is determined to restore their shared heritage on the showboat and that he’s home to stay?
Read an Excerpt A knock on his car window jerked him back to the Mickey D’s parking lot and he turned to see a young woman peering in. “Hey?” She tapped on the glass again. “Hey? Aren’t you that cop? The one on TV? Pete At-Atwater?” Aidan came within a second of simply shaking his head since she didn’t even have the name of his character right, but another girl came up behind the blonde, a huge smile on her face. “It’s him!” She gripped the blonde’s arm. “It’s Pete Atwood from LA Detectives!” Elbowing her way to the window of the little MG, she stooped down. “We love you, Pete!” Pinning on his celebrity smile, the one that showed off his dimples and made hearts race all over America and Canada, Aidan rolled down the window. “Good morning, ladies.” They clutched each other and giggled, jiggling with excitement. “Can we get a picture with you?” the blond one asked while the other one bit her lip and sighed. “Sure.” Aidan opened the car door and got out, surreptitiously scanning the parking lot as he did so. Most of the cars were in the drive-thru and the people in line weren’t paying attention to the activity in the corner of the parking lot, where he’d deliberately parked to avoid being recognized. How had these two figured out who he was? Oh, crap, the California license plates on Pete’s distinctive MG! A dead giveaway and it’s no secret that the actor who plays Pete Atwood is from a small river town in southern Indiana. At least ten pictures and a couple of autographs later, he was back in the car while the two girls scurried off. Aidan watched out of the corner of his eye as they high-fived each other before getting into an older compact car. No doubt they were both on their phones letting friends know that Pete Atwood was haunting the parking lot of the McDonald’s on the highway, so heaving a huge breath, he buckled up and turned the key in the ignition. Day 21 Crescent City to Nesika Beach 69 Miles
July 19, 2017 6:02 time, 2,813 calories, 2,795' climbed, 11.4 avg mph Leaving Crescent City after a day there doing nothing had me eager to go!  I still did sleep in a little bit, I figured if you have a bed, use it.  Still I was one the road in time to have 30 miles in the bag by eleven when I hit the towns of Brookings and Harbor, which are separate towns but do share a sign.  However, when it comes to signs around here I have a major issue!  There was no giant "welcome to Oregon" sign, nor was there a welcome party with banners congratulating me for having ridden my bike all the way through california, that's a different story though.  I was in Oregon without even realizing it! I pulled into Smith River, about 20 miles in, where there was a bike shop sign by the street but no actual bike shop, I still need to pump up my tires.  After this my Momma called, she was been on vacation with my pops in Virginia and it sounds like getting their fill or civil war history, country founding history and the national parks over there.  She's a really great traveler, I owe her for that, she taught me well and it was fun to chat about their park adventure across the country while I was having mine.   What I really needed to talk about though was some heavy stuff, One of the best parts about this trip is talking to my family so much. I am realizing what this trip is really about by doing all this processing with them.  I have an on going list of why I am doing this and yesterday my mom gave me some insight that blows the hole thing away.  I am doing this trip as a reset button, a new matchline (the term my map uses when one section of map ends and another begins) in my road map of life.  I think one of the reasons that this year has been hard is because I just feel like my life at this point has been defined now by before and after my divorce.  The heartbreak, pain and depression caused by my ex's cheating, lying and greed weighs so heavy that I freaked out, and by freaked out I mean jumped on my bike and starting riding to Canada. The visual memory of catching her red handed and the physical altercation that followed with him left me highly traumatized and stained and stained everything.  Now there can be a new giant milestone to see before and after from instead that shitty one.  My mom said that was how she answered people when they asked why I was doing this, that I was creating a net set point.  That gave me such a massive moment of clarity, like there is an expansive field unfolding in front of me, or more technically a endless road laid out ahead, and I can stop trying to get out from under the weight of the lies, and suffering that I have been buried by. All those messy memories now fall into the past and having a great adventure replaces it as the defining point of my recent history.  Now my tomorrows are defined by a backdrop of something awesome and I'm standing on a spring board into the future, I'm getting ready to jump, that's why I'm riding.  Thanks Mom! I love you more than anything! Which brings me to something I want to clear up,  My stupid rant two weeks ago about matrimony in a modern society, I wish I wasn't alone writing all that so someone could have slapped me and told me to shut up.  I do believe what I said about all the religious stuff and how it damages a proper understanding of relationships, lovers, and meant to be ness, but marriage is not the problem.  Just like "guns don't kill people, people kill people," "marriage doesn't hurt people, shitty people hurt people."  I lost a boat load of money to a cheating ex wife and there was no case I could make to avoid it, that's bullshit, but my problem isn't with marriage, maybe it's with divorce or entitlement, greed, shitty people, liars, cheaters etc.  It's with people not being true and hurting others especially when there is a lot tied up in the relationship, nothing compounds betrayal and heartbreak worst than the person who caused it getting rich by stealing your life saving afterward by taking advantage of the "No Fault" state laws.  But it's not about marriage and it's not fair to make blanket statements like it's outdated, stupid or not for me.  I want to get married again, by brother and Nina, my mom and pop, they are shinning examples of marriage   at it's best.  I want that and just because my pursuit of it exploded in my face like a firecracker going off earlier than expected I am determined to not loose an eye or a finger because of it.  I don't want to be a sour old man that spends his time shitting on the one thing that is a major source of most peoples happiness.  Instead, it would be a lot nicer to decide that she hurt me, marriage didn't hurt me, and look forward to finding the next woman to spend my life with, start a family and be my wife.  After all in the words of the great modern philosopher Beyonce "if you like it then you should'a put a ring on it"  Being that guy who keeps his girl waiting until maybe he gets ok with the idea of marriage is immature, selfish and absolutely not fair to her or truly being in love, unless they both don't want it that so be it.  I don't think I'll find a girl that's such a feminist that she rejects marriage all together but wants to be with me, after all taking my name is a deal breaker.   Anyway I don't have to find her, she is in San Diego and her name is Jennifer Wilbanks and I am in love with her.  It's been really hard getting to this point, the concepts of trust and love and knowing that you can trust your feelings was pretty shot to shit for me.  So despite spending over a year dating Jen now it's been a roller coaster for me.  She's perfect, a complete angel and I'd be a damn fool to throw what we have away because I don't know what I want or it keeps changing or I'm now afraid of commitment.  This was the other thing my brilliant mother cleared up for me this morning.  At one point I got a little offended because she interrupted me by just saying "Oh get over it!" I was describing how my divorce has created so much uncertainty for me and a hesitation to trust my feelings when I think I feel sure about something. So much so to the point that I am probably about to have this amazing women walk away from me because I am clearly not on a timeline that syncs with hers.  I am not there because I've been traumatized and it's easier now to just focus on me and what I want instead of growing up and taking a chance and becoming the man I want to be, a family man, a man that puts others first and can trust her and know that we want the same things and can grow together as we pursue them.  She said nothing is ever certain not for you or anyone, no matter what they've been through so get over it.  I want to be a husband, I do, I like that.  My friend Pablo who I was traveling with last week said once "Having a great woman is one of the best things in the world."  If my woman (yes, I know the myriad of issues with the term "my woman" please forgive it this once) wants to be my wife then damnit, I want to want to be her husband, put a ring on it, have that commitment and determination and passion and reason to fight for love.

I Never Chose to Live in the Philippines
People have many different reasons for choosing to live in the location they do.
I’m originally from the UK but now live in the Philippines and have done so for the last twelve years.
However, the truth of the matter is, I never really chose to live in the Philippines…
…it chose me.
If that sounds a bit rich and a little bit ‘hippy-dippy’, then let me assure you its not.
Read this article to the end and hopefully you’ll understand what I mean when I say I never chose to live in the Philippines.
Why Do You Live Where You Live?
For some, the place they live is simply the place they were born, and they never had the desire to move.
Perhaps they lack the resources or imagination to live somewhere else.
I make no judgment at all on anybody who chooses not to relocate, as long as they’re happy where they are then I say ‘more power to ya!’.
But the truth is, I know for a fact, that many people live their entire lives in a place that brings them little happiness or in some extreme cases…
…none at all.
For me, moving to the Philippines was something that was born out of a need to be somewhere else.
Anywhere else.
I’d always felt uncomfortable and out of place. Like I had an itch that I could never scratch.
Does that make sense?
I just wanted a place where I could feel happy and relaxed and free from worry and stress. It never seemed like an unreasonable goal to me but yet it was something that I could never achieve while living in the West.
Finding a Wife in the Philippines
For many people, getting married, having kids and settling down is what they think will bring them happiness. If that’s you and you’re genuinely happy then, that’s awesome!
I know that many visitors to this site are interested in finding a wife, and that’s great. I wish them well, and hopefully, someday, I’ll follow suit.
Finding a wife was never my primary reason for moving here.
Having been married twice before, I was never overly concerned with finding a spouse nor does it occupy too much of my time.
That’s not to say that I’m against the idea because I genuinely believe in the institution of marriage.
Committing to another person and promising to spend the rest of your lives together, sounds pretty sweet to me.
It’s just not something I’ve seen too much evidence of in my lifetime and can count the great unions on the fingers of one hand.
The Philippines is also a ‘no divorce’ country and annulments can be expensive and take a long time.
The next time I get married will have to be the last, and so I’m even more cautious than normal.
Negativity is Everywhere
I recently read a comment from somebody on our Facebook page, something to the effect that we – as in Retiring to the Philippines – are lying to our visitors by only promoting the beauty and benefits of living in the Philippines.
Initially, I was mad and was going to post a snide rebuke, but then I stopped myself and thought about it for a moment.
There are indeed quite a few posts on this website espousing a seemingly idealistic view of life in the Philippines for foreigners, but there is also some that point out the dangers and pitfalls that one might encounter.
The fact is that most of the guys that choose to write for our website are genuinely really happy with their lives and grateful to be living here.
That’s not to say it’s all roses and candy and we don’t encounter hassles and things that annoy us.
Of course, we do, and you know what? That’s life!
Whether those things are something that you allow yourself to be defined by is your call entirely, and nobody else’s!
The difference between us and some other foreigners that live in the Philippines is that we don’t try to impose our views or opinions on the locals or their government.
We accept and acknowledge that we are visitors and it is a privilege to be here, and not a right.
As I mentioned above, my reasons for living in the Philippines are to find personal happiness and avoid stress.
For me, it’s working out just fine, but it’s certainly not the traditional lifestyle of an expat in the Philippines.
My idea of happiness may be different from yours and to be honest, I expect it is.
I’ve always been the type of person that enjoys their own company, and I don’t necessarily need other people to make me feel whole.
I was speaking to my stepfather the other day, and I commented that “most of the problems that I’ve had in my life were caused by other people,” and that’s true.
Left to my own devices, I tend to do just fine.
Too Anti-Social to be Sociable?
Somebody over here – a foreigner – once referred to me as ‘anti-social, ‘ and to some degree, they may have been right.
I would argue, however, that I’m not so much anti-social as hyper-selective and cautiously skeptical of people and their motives.
When I am in the company of others, I’m usually the life of the party and am an engaged and inquisitive conversationalist.
The fact that I’m not constantly surrounded by people and for the most part, don’t feel a personal need for permanent companionship, doesn’t make me anti-social.
It just makes me, me.
Conclusion
So to answer the question of why I live in the Philippines, I’d say, because it makes me happy and for the most part, people leave me alone.
That’s it!
Nothing magical and no great secret. It is simply a country and lifestyle that suits me and allows me to live my life the way I want.
Will it suit everybody? I’m guessing not.
Will it suit you? I have no idea.
One thing I can say though is that if you come over here with some pre-conceived notion of how you think things ‘should’ be, then you’re probably going to be disappointed.
I came here because of my need to be somewhere other than where I was, and at the time, it was Hawaii.
I’d also tried Australia, Canada, the Canary Islands and my homeland of the UK. I’d been searching for someplace to call ‘home’ for forty years and now I’ve finally found it in the Philippines.
I had no preconceptions, and I even had to check the map to see where the Philippines was!
That was twelve years ago, and for me, it’s been the best decision I NEVER made.
All the best!
If anything in this article resonates with you, then please feel free to post a comment below. Make sure you read our comment policy though before you do as I’m not a fan of negativity and they will no doubt end up in the trash before they see the light of day.
All part and parcel of working to keep my life positive and make myself a happy and content individual.
