Betta Foods: A Big Huge List

Oh boy, I’m so sorry this has been sitting unpublished at the bottom of my drafts list for like a year at this point, I’m not sure why I didn’t put it out when I finished it back then, but here it is! On popular request, alongside my Big Huge Goldfish Food List

I did it! Wrangled together a pretty long list of betta foods. Wonderful, terrible, and some in between. But mostly terrible, wow there’s a lot of bad food on the market....

I actually had to go back through and move several of the higher ranked ones down the list because on a second look a year later they were worse than I remembered. Either the companies changed the formulas or 2017 Anna was selectively blind to a lot of soy and brewer’s yeast 🤔 

Please note that this is NOT a nutrition guide! This is just a list of commercial foods ranked by quality! For a better breakdown of what, when, and how much to feed your betta please check out this great guide by @tser. 

Also, unless otherwise specified these are all based on the pellet versions of these foods, not flakes. Pellets in general are always going to be the better choice.

Quality ingredients, minimal fillers, these are good choices for regular feeding alongside the proper frozen live proteins

Not bad

May be rotated in with other staple foods for variety. Some have slightly lower quality ingredients or a few too many fillers, others are good quality but not well balanced for daily feeding.

would make a great staple but it’s not a gel food, this one is messy!

If you have to..?

Passable if you’ve really got nothing else on hand, but otherwise don’t waste your money. Feeding these long term is not going to be healthy for your fishies.

1st ingredient corn starch, 5 more fillers, plus 8 plant ingredients, no way

Tetra Betta Plus Floating Pellets

Only protein ingredients are 2nd and... 8th... on the list. The rest is all fillers and nutrients and some algae meal way down. Yeesh.

Tropical USA Betta Granules 

11 different fillers what else do I say

Zoo-Med Micro Floating Betta Pellets  

It’s trash. I mean. It’s trash. comes with tiny adorable feeding wand tho, that’s a plus, so cute

This one may be a little rougher than my goldfish list since I’m not a betta person and I compiled this list much faster than the other one (even if it did take me forever to actually publish it, oops)
