Etrian Odyssey Series: Compilation of Archetypal Town Characters

I really love the NPCs that show up in each Etrian Odyssey game, in the town you keep coming back to between dungeon visits. Unironically, I'm always excited to see the new shopkeeper, innkeeper, barkeeper, etc. of any given EO game. Because of that, just for fun, I decided to gather official art for all characters of the archetypes: guildmasters (whom you speak to when growing and organizing your guilds), innkeepers (whom you speak to when resting at an inn or storing/taking back items), shopkeepers (whom you speak to when buying goods and armor/weapons), barkeepers (whom you speak to to get and report sidequests), and...mission givers? (officials whom you speak to to get or report important story missions).

Now, some of this art was a bit tough to find, mainly for Etrian Mystery Dungeon 2 and the Mobile game, since neither was released outside of Japan and the latter is more or less lost. For EMD 2 I went to some Japanese articles on 4gamer talking about it (https://www.4gamer.net/games/375/G037512/20170720039/ and https://www.4gamer.net/games/375/G037512/20170622014/) and for the Mobile game I went to this Japanese Article that that talked about playing it a little (http://dihyhi.blog.fc2.com/blog-entry-47.html), which to my knowledge is one of the only documentations of that game, so credit to those sources for the art. I also machine translated those sites for info on the Characters' names and whatnot, so take it with a grain of salt. I know machine translations are rarely very helpful but it's all I had right now, sorry.

It should also be noted that there will be light spoilers for some of the games here, mainly Etrian Odyssey 3. Nothing too egregious, at worst it's for something you find when you beat the second Stratum, but I still feel I should mention it.

One last thing, I will be listing most games as EO plus their respective number (so the first game will be EO1), the Mystery Dungeon games will be listed as EMD and EMD2, for the first and second respectively, the Mobile game will written EOM, and even though in America it's called Etrian Odyssey Nexus I will write that game as "EOX", simply because that's more distinctive as an acronym. I've seen others on here do that so it's probably not so weird but I still felt I should clarify.

But enough talk! It is time to meet the guildmasters, some of the most important NPCs in any Etrian Odyssey game! Mostly rather well-armored looking (except for in EO3, EMD2, and Mobile), these tend to be pretty cool characters, and while we don't always get to see them fight much it's welcome when the chance does arrive.

My favorite of these is probably Marion, with Asuka and Egar as runner ups.

And now, for the group that, to be real, is a big part of why I wanted to make this post: the Innkeepers! Friendly, helpful folks that run the inns where your characters can rest, healing up and saving progress. As some likely remember, I already listed most of these characters in that meme I made some time back, featuring characters I like that have constantly closed eyes (https://barbaracleboy.tumblr.com/post/722662911985778688/forgive-me-if-ive-posted-this-here-already-but-i). I intentionally tried to list every Innkeeper from the Etrian Odyssey series (minus some whose eye aren't closed all the time, whom I will get into later), and I largely succeeded!...except it turns out that there's a unique innkeeper in the Etrian Odyssey Mobile game. Granted, I can't really get on myself for that, it's a Japan-only mobile game that barely anyone seems to have played or heard of and is also not available anymore. Still, that was a slight bummer for me. But look! They're all here now!

My favorites of these is probably Hanna, with Jenetta and Dalla as runner ups.

And now, I can truly have them lined up together.

Next up are various shopkeepers! Fun fact! Napier is not only the Shopkeeper to have run the shop in two separate games (not counting remakes), but one of, if not the only one of these NPCs to have hosted a facility in two separate games.

My favorite of these is probably Shilleka, with Edie and Wynne as runner ups.

This group consists of characters in similar not identical roles to the prior group: if I'm correct, in Etrian Odyssey One medicines and equipment were sold at different shops, and at medicine shops you could also revive characters and cure petrification (EO2 brought medicine at the main shop but kept the revival at the hospital). Hoffman, Stiles, and Muse(?) here ran their respective games medicine shops/hospitals, Angie supported Dr. Stiles, Don Chano supported his daughter, Elizabeth (from the prior group), and Lizley and the Merchant of Darkness(?) acted as merchants you coukd run into within the dungeon itself. Also, apparently Hoffman, Stiles, and Angie are (based on) characters from Trauma Center, which is neat.

My favorite of these is probably Don Chano, with either Lizley and the Merchant of Darkness as runner ups.

Another big favorite of mine, the Barkeeps! It's always fun chatting with these friendly types, hearing them cheer you on before many quests and compliment you for having completed one. They're so pleasant!...Though. yeah, Kvasir can be quite suspect with some of the things he says.

My favorite here is probably Kirtida, with Niralda and...either Missy or Mukkoran as runner ups...I love them too much, ha.

I don't know what to call this grouo really but they give the story missions and are about all in some position of power. Some are more involved in the story than others, but overall you will be seeing them often...Also, for some reason I couldn't find anyone that fills this role for Etrian Mystery Dungeon 2? Maybe I just did a bad job at looking but I don't know, I just couldn't find anybody. It's odd.

My favorite here has GOT to be the Outland Count (massively fond of his face, his moustache, and his dog), with Flowdia and Persephone as runner ups.

Last group here, being a variety of characters that act as alternatives or support for some of the other ones. This also has spoilers for etrian Odyssey 3 (the thing being spoiled is discovered after you beat the second Stratum but still).

Visil is a character you'll occasionally see during tbe story of EO1, Quona is Hannah's daughter who will sometimes greet you at the inn instead of or in addition to her mother, Gradriel is someone you'll see a bit throughout EO2's story, Gutrune is the Princess of Armoroad whom you'll see and/or hear about throuought EO3's story, Seyfreid is the Abyssal King whom you'll speak with and get Subclasses from in the Deep City of EO3, Napier's Sister (who, unfortunately, seems to have no confirmed name) runs the shop of the Deep City in EO3, Angie (who I would presume isn't the same one from EO2 but is based on the same Trauma Team character? I think?) runs the inn of EO3's Deep City, and finally, Yobo is Traoré's brother in Etrian Mystery Dungeon 2, and I...think he assists Mukkoran in giving out quests?...Him being a recolor is pretty lame, tbh.

My favorite here is probably Visil, with Napier's Sister and Seyfreid as runner ups.

HOO! THERE WE GO! Hope you guys liked this little trip down memory lane I guess, ha. I love many of these characters, and if and when EO6 happens I can't wait to see who it introduces that'll enter my heart just like many of these have!

Wow! It’s been a while since I’ve made one of these things properly and personally I’m not any good at them but here’s a shot for good luck! Thank you so much to everybody who’s followed me and taken interest on my take on Cloud and just spares me overall some time of their day. I know I’m not the most active but I do try to be around to have a good time with all of you! I’ve met some pretty awesome people so far and I’ve been having such a wonderful time here too. Roleplaying here and just goofing around/having a good time with friends really eases my stress and lightens my mood a lot! So I really thank you guys for helping me ease up when I feel like things might be getting too heavy for me! Even if my time thus far has been short and not more than a uhhh week or two give or take I’ve had a lot of laughs and have gotten the pleasure to write with some amazing people and even meet a few of them too! So thank you so much! I’ve been encountering and dealing with some rough patches lately so coming on here and just spending time here has made me feel a little better, more afloat I guess. So I genuinely thank each and every one of you who chat with me/write with me/scream at me/send me asks/reblog things that inspire me/reblog things of things I like/reblog/post things that make me laugh because you’re doing more than what you think you’re doing for me so thanks, like really thank you.

Cloud’s a very important character, someone I enjoy portraying and just writing as and some of you have stuck around and have given me a couple of thumbs up on how I’m doing with him so thank you so much for sending me feedback, it gives me extra exp. since I’m a lvl 3 scrub right now lmao. I have a lot of feelings about his character and many ideas and some of you have indulged me already in a couple I’ve had in mind so again thanks! Thanks for sticking around, being kind to me, letting me clown around every now and then, and just being you and giving me the opportunity to be around you in some kind of way!

There’s also some people who aren’t on tumblr anymore but every now and then I get to talk to them when they drop by, thanks to you guys as well for the support and for being around me in some kind of way. 👉 @fairlegacy: Okay but listen Sam’s awesome and amazing and one of my best friends out there. I know that I can go to him and talk to him just about everything. He’s very kind and extremely wise, gives me advice and helps me out when he thinks it’s getting out of my hands and does what he can to keep me in check. Though a bit over protective if you ask me, I’m just as like protective of him too. He’s had my back ever since I met him and in fact the way we started to talk was kinda funny because he was very unsure of how to approach me in conversation when I reached out to him which I personally thought was cute but he’s gotten better now! Just like I’m so thankful to have him in my life and that he came into it because honest to anything out there he’s a beautiful human being and a wonderful best friend and I’m sorry this is sappy Sam but like it’s true, you’re very special to me and I’d bring hell on earth for you if anybody ever wronged you just like you’ve shown me the countless and zillions of times that you’re there for me. You remind me at least once day, you probably don’t even notice but you do and that means so much to me. That you remind me that you’re there and I honestly want to learn how to be that way, to have a presence just like yours that makes others feel really safe and sure because in the past I was pretty blind to my surroundings but then I met you and we grew close and because of it I notice a lot and many things from others, things I missed/couldn’t see/didn’t appreciate so thank you Sam. Like I know sappiness really isn’t your thing but I love you man, thanks for being my friend. Not just that but like I admire you as a writer and how much you can write and have passion over Zack? And how good you are as Zack? Like hands down if I practiced exclusivity at all you’d by my Zack. Like goals? I’ve never met anybody else with this genuine passion and love over a character like you because you can like scream days on days about Zack lmao. I know right now you’re like away for a bit and I totally understand why but I can’t wait to have you back buddy, really!

👉 @jjillekkot: Nina! Honest to everything when I met you I never thought we were gonna grow this close. Like at all. Not that I mind it at all or was against it back then or anything it just like happened and just like you’ve told me that it surprised you I haven’t told you but it also took me by surprise and shocked me too. You’re so important and special to me, I’m also glad that I was given the chance to meet you and get to know you, and just be close to you and just be able to spend time with you. You’re so kind, sweet, genuine, like I don’t even have words to describe how great you are too me and how important. Actually I think you might know I’ve told you countless of times I’d pummel people in your honor so maybe you do get an idea of what I mean lmao! Thank you so much for your support and for your patience with the things I’m going through right now, not just you but Sam and Rose too. You’re a huge rock for me, like it’s nice to know that maybe if I’m pulling a two week of straight working with no days off in between or at all I know that when I come back you’ll be here to greet me and say hi and that’s really nice to know that I’ll have people to come back to, it makes things less heavy for me so thank you. Thank you for just being you, for being by my side, being a wonderful human being, just for being you and for coming into my life. You and I don’t really talk as much but when we do it’s always nice and I appreciate it when we can. Sam always tells me that you and I are more similar than he thought and it kinda makes me curious what he means by that lmao I do know that you’re very kind, and sweet, and funny, and a very genuine person who cares a lot for others and wants the well being of those you care about. You’ve shown me before that you look out for me too and that means so much to me, thank you for caring for me because I also care about you a lot. 10 Things About the Mun

The name of the game is: If you’re tagged, post 10 random facts that your followers don’t know about you, and then tag 10 people who you want to know more about, and they’ll do the same! Tagged by @chikorithesaiyan

I am very sure everybody who follows me knows these things about me because most of y’all if not all of you came from my personal blog and I’m not really secretive (online at least). But if I can’t finish 10 things then I won’t bother posting this but if I do then well you’re reading this >w>

1. I really love dragons. Like, a lot. They’re my life now. They’re easier to draw than most other things, they come in all sizes and shapes and colors and some have scales and some have feathers and some have fur and some have horns and some are big and STRONG or smol or noodles etc etc etc

2. I’m a physics major about to start my sixth year in undergrad college, and I’m really hoping I’ll be able to finish this year because two of the classes I have left I almost failed last semester and dropped them, and one of them is available ONLY once with one professor each spring :x

3. I’m actually pretty bad at science and math tbh despite my major/studies, because my brain is the equivalent of a corrupted Windows 10 computer with 512 GB of storage, and 2 GB of RAM.

4. I started roleplaying in... 2011? I think. I was doing it on forums with really bad OCs, and it didn’t really last long because the group got all stupid and petty and then moved on to other things I didn’t join. But I found tumblr in 2012 and started RPing as CS in the Kirby community. I was awful back then, but thankfully I got better at least.

5. I RPed a Dragonite for a couple of years I guess because if you didn’t know like DRAGONITE IS THE PERFECT POKEMON THEY ARE SUCH ROUND BOIS.

6. I really like Bayonetta, okay? She’s the star, she’s a classy sarcastic motherfucker, and she’s cocky in a good way okay. You know who else is good?? JEANNE. So much POWER and so much SPEED and such a good Umbran sister to Bayonetta OKAY NOTHING CAN STAND IN THEIR WAY. But anyway yeah I like playing those games a lot especially online.

7. Back to Dragonite I actually had ideas for a dragon when I was still in the Pokemon community but my art style was super limited and I didn’t bother drawing my own original shit yet and then once I was done with the community... I think I was done by then, I tried drawing my own dragon. Memory’s bad. But since I had been learning to draw and drew nothing but Dragonite for two years nonstop at least one person called my dragon a Dragonite idk for fun or for real idk but eventually that fat dragon turned into Apex. I had been very conscious about the whole thing since and didn’t want my dragons looking like modified Dragonites omfg though even my other dragons were called my Dragonite character too I’m sure out of a joke but still it was kind of cringey/painful to hear tbhhhh because that wasn’t what I was going for at all

8. I have a bunch of plants. My room is a jungle, and as a result they increase the humidity in here probably, and I keep my door shut for privacy because I’m a recluse, and I keep a bunch of plant lights on all day, and this room is naturally hotter than the rest of the house for some reason so all that combined makes one very very hot room. I’m also operate very hot it’s a living hell. This was meant to be a fact about my plants but it’s about heat now.

10. Uhhhhhhhh uhhh I like vore? Like, a LOT? I know this weirds a lot of people out though probably not most of my followers since most came from my personal/art blogs but not sure idk. It weirds me out sometimes too. But that’s how it is. ESPECIALLY dragon vore. This uh... just to be clear, doesn’t affect my RP motivations here. If some of my characters do happen to try eating people’s characters around here, it’s really not vore motivated at all omg I know that can be hard to believe but trust me I really don’t want to RP here for the sake of vore, and I think there’s a really big difference between RPs that I do here and vore RPs. I mean I’m not /against/ it but it’s a little specific and I’d want it to make sense and not be OOC??? And at the very least where both I and the other RPer are comfortable RPing that kind of scenario omg
