#I’d also kind of like to remedy my post about my least favorite upper moon

almost all demon slayer characters are super interesting Wells of potential and Kaigaku however underutilized is not a exception.
What are your thoughts on Kaigaku? For me he is a interesting foil to most slayers because more than anything else he wants to keep living for himself. He is the opposite of the self sacrificing attitude that the Rengokus or Zenitsu possess. No matter what it takes, he'll do whatever is most likely to help him survive. Even if he has to beg more powerful people like Kokushibo and that demon from Gyomei's backstory, he'll do it without shame.
Even when he was in safe hands under Gramps Jigoro he still didn't feel completely safe and did whatever he could so he could become Gramps heir so in his eyes he'll never be replaced. That kind of mindset runs deep.
I think Tanjiro probably could have gotten to him since he is a peer and doesn't stand above him, ungodly levels of empathic and self sacrificing, could and would beat Kaigaku 's ass need be and he's emotionally mature with a solid head on his shoulders.
I gave into my instinct to ramble about a character that has barely any content but I really want know your thoughts.
Space anon
Don’t worry about rambling! This really helped me gather my thoughts on him because I honestly didn’t think much of him at all? To me he was such a background character that didn’t make too big of an impact, but a lot of the characters I love are kind of the same way so I thought a little bit more about him and now here we are lol.
I think that Kaigaku would’ve been just as interesting as all the other demons if the series could’ve afforded more time to show/develop him. I still think the twist of him becoming the upper moon 6 is good and surprising, but more so because of Zenitsu’s ties to him and not the character himself. However I do think that he’s one of the more interesting characters in theory because his actions are unlike anything we’ve seen! I can’t think of a character that will sell another person out just to save their skin like he does except for maybe like, Douma or Kokushibo, because even the demons have people they’re loyal to. I don’t think that makes him a bad character though, I think it makes him very interesting.
I also like that he’s a direct parallel to Zenitsu. Kaigaku is presented to be everything that Zenitsu isn’t (brave, independent, and skilled vs fearful, dependent, and incompetent- which is his view on himself btw, I think Zenitsu is a lot more than he gives himself credit for), and someone that Zenitsu looks up to because he wants to be just like him. I like that Zenitsu, despite seeming to be a worse version of him, thrives and grows because he has real connections with the people around him that he’s become vulnerable and trusting to, while Kaigaku only cares about himself and builds no meaningful relationships to the point that he didn’t even have loyalty to the whole of humanity. He also serves to give Zenitsu closure, and show the audience how much Zenitsu has grown.
But, on his own, I think of Kaigaku like this- he is very, deeply afraid. He presents himself as fearless and strong, but if that were the case then he wouldn’t of sold out Gyomei and he wouldn’t of turned to Kokushibo either. He doesn’t trust anyone because he thinks it’ll get him killed, and only wants to survive even if he has nothing meaningful to show for it in the end, which is why he becomes a demon. He puts Zenitsu down because he can see himself in him, and probably hates that Zenitsu became more successful and happier than him. I think that Kaigaku is an extremely scared boy that its driven him to do terrible things, and it just piles onto the tragedy that all the upper moons are.
