Carving up the Pistes in Livigno, Italy

After four nights visiting family in Sheffield, UK, over the New Year, and three nights in Edale to address my withdrawal symptoms from hiking on the remote Kinder Scout, I set out in the early darkness for London Gatwick airport, hypnotized by the wind driven snow which the wipers struggled to clear away. My new iPhone 8 had suddenly died for no reason a couple of days earlier, so I'd been communicating the airport rendezvous with my two sons, Luke and Alex, by email from my laptop, and was now navigating the old school way, by memory and road sign.

Four grueling hours later and I felt pleased with myself that I'd managed to rendezvous at the gate, on time, and without the use of much technology. And as usual it was as though we'd never been apart – they are grown up now at 26 and 28 years old, so we were just like three mates simply carrying on where we'd last left off. But my feeling of content was about to hit a minor setback! As the Easyjet flight to Innsbruck, Austria, began it's long approach between snow covered peaks along the Inn Valley, the steep, icy slopes soared up either side of us, funneling the winds, and causing our plane to buffet around like a ball in a lottery machine. I did wonder whether our numbers might come up! Then just as we were a couple of hundred feet above the runway the engines suddenly kicked in and became deafening, roaring loudly and sending vibrations through the cabin. The landing had been aborted and we were off into a fast, steep ascent to clear the menacingly close snowy mountain tops, the calm face for my boys belying my wildly beating heart. There's something very scarily out-of-place about hearing these engines roar at the wrong time, when you're supposed to be landing rather than taking off. After circling back the pilot explained that he would go around for another go, and everyone held their breath with ashen faces as we came in again for the second time. It was exactly the same heart stopping outcome, and only two approaches per flight are allowed, so we were forced to head to Munich airport, only 15 minutes away, while the pilot decided what to do.  

After successfully landing in Munich, to relieved and rousing applause, we started to refuel and the pilot announced we were going in for a third attempt – at that there was a mad rush for the exit and, after special clearance from customs, about a third of the passengers left the aircraft. I guess Munich was close enough for some.

Our third attempt into Innsbruck went without a hitch – it seemed the winds had calmed down just enough, and in our lateness we raced through immigration control to the car rental desk where I immediately felt ripped off for incurring unexpected costs for snow chains (requirement for traveling through the Munt La Schera Tunnel - 83 euros) and being late (out-of-hours - 45 euros). We headed off through Innsbruck center on our way to Switzerland and Italy but it was a shaky start as we seemed to find ourselves on a dark road shared by the cities trams – I'm still not completely sure whether we should have been on that 'road', especially when the driver of a tram coming the other way gave us a strange look, urgently waving his arms, but at the time was confident I would be able outrun any tram coming up behind us.

The narrow and winding icy roads through the Swiss Alps in total darkness were not the easiest to drive on, even with snow tires, and so after three hours was relieved to see the Mont La Schera tunnel come into view – a 45 euro return toll for a two mile long tunnel seemed steep, but it's the only guaranteed way into Livigno during the winter when other routes regularly get blocked off.

We entered the tunnel in Switzerland and emerged into the isolated enclave of Livigno Valley in Italy, and after such a long day I was relieved to see the Hotel Loredana come into view – I'd started out in the snowy early morning darkness of Edale, UK, made an unplanned stop in Germany, then onto Austria and Switzerland, and finally completed my journey in the snowy evening darkness of Italy, 13 hours later. As we finally relaxed in the comfortable three star hotel, which was perfect for our needs, our fatigue started to take it's toll and we were soon fast asleep.

During the next four days we would explore the pistes, bars and restaurants on both the Trepalle and Livigno side of the valley. A typical day would be a couple of hours skiing between 11.00am and 1.00pm, then lunch and drinks between 1.00 and 2.00 pm at a mountain restaurant – Camanel Di Planon was our favorite, not least because of their hot chocolate spiked with an potent dose of rum. More skiing from 2pm to 3.30pm was usually followed by a final beverage or two, before cautiously navigating down a difficult 'black' graded run to the bottom of the slopes in the semi-darkness around 4.30pm. After a short rest back at the hotel we would head out into Livigno town to find a half decent restaurant for dinner where the raucous apres ski scene would be kicking off.

The runs, graded as mainly 'red', with a few of the more difficult 'blacks' and a smattering of easier 'blues' s thrown in, had an eclectic mix of names such as Capriolo, Libellula, Giorgio Rocca or Scoiattolo, to name just a few. I should say the difficulty level was a tad less than runs I'd experienced in the nearby Alps resorts of Chamonix and Zermatt where I would generally have stayed well clear of most 'black' runs. And I should note that the 'red' grading is not used in the USA – there a 'red' would be graded as an easy 'black' or a difficult 'blue'. Other benefits of this place over those more popular European resorts were quieter pistes, lower prices, and fewer western Europeans – although I should say your average western European skier is way more interesting and adventurous than many of the western European sun seekers that I sometimes meet on my travels. Italians and Russians seemed to be the most populous here.

Luke and Alex, although way more competent than me, would fill me with anxiety as they headed down the piste ahead of me at breakneck speed – as a father, it's an anxiety I never seem to lose. But they would regularly wait for their dad part way down the run, and then carry on ahead again once I'd safely arrived, finally meeting up at the bottom to travel back up in the lift together. And their skiing techniques seem to parallel their personalities – Alex lost in thought on a higher plane as he incessantly explores the jumps and off-piste sections through trees, like a red setter sniffing out enticing morsels, while Luke just going straight at full speed, direct and organized.

I would just take my time cruising down the empty pistes in peace, my face cooled by the chill breeze and pin pricks of disturbed icy powder, mitigated only slightly by the bright, warming sunshine -- the only sounds were of my skis scraping gentle arcs in the snow, and my breaths, speeded slightly by the mild dose of adrenaline coursing through my veins. Time would seem to stand still as I was lost in the moment, with unrelated thoughts flowing in and out like dreams.

But after four days of adventure on the pistes it was time to finally leave this beautiful, remote enclave. Our drive back to Innsbruck airport through the Swiss mountains was much easier in the daylight, and our flight back to London Gatwick went without a hitch this time. And as I said my goodbyes to Luke and Alex and headed off to catch my flight back to New York, I was starting to notice their absence already, and Iooked forward to the next time we would navigate the pistes together on some far away slopes.
