What Shirt to Wear with Cargo Pants
Tumblr media
Cargo pants were hugely popular back in the 1990s and have made a big comeback in recent years. Known for their roomy silhouette and utilitarian pockets, cargo pants offer both comfort and versatility. However, their baggy, casual shape can make them tricky to style. So what type of shirt should you wear with cargo pants? The key is choosing tops that provide balance.
Factors to Consider When Selecting a Shirt
When creating an outfit with cargo pants, keep these factors in mind:
Color Palette
Stick to neutral colored shirts in black, white, tan, olive green, or other earth tones. These hues complement and balance the usual tan, army green, or black shades of cargo pants. Avoid wearing bright colors that may clash with the pants.
Fit
Look for shirts with a tailored, well-fitted silhouette. Oversized and boxy tops can overwhelm cargo pants, while skin-tight shirts may look too extreme. Aim for tees, polos, and button-downs that fit properly through the shoulders, chest, and sleeves. Proper shirt fit helps balance the roominess of cargo pants.
Style
Crew neck and v-neck t-shirts, polo shirts, casual button-downs, flannels, and henleys are all shirt styles that work well with men's cargo pants. Avoid more formal dress shirts, which can look mismatched.
Material
Lightweight, breathable materials like cotton, linen, and knits make the best shirt options for cargo pants. Avoid slick, shiny fabrics that may look incongruous with the casual vibe of cargos.
Tuck or Untuck
Either a tucked-in or untucked shirt can work well. Tucking in gives a put-together look, while letting your shirt hang loose adds relaxed flair. Feel free to switch up between the two styles.
Recommended Shirts to Pair with Cargo Pants
Here are some specific shirt styles and colors that complement cargo pants especially well:
Solid color t-shirt in white, black, gray, olive green, tan
Breton stripe tee in classic navy/white
Plaid button-down shirt left open over a plain tee
Denim button-down shirt in light or medium wash
Olive green utility shirt or field jacket
Tan/beige henley shirt with a few buttons undone
White or pastel polo shirt with a few buttons open
Lightweight cotton sweater or hoodie in gray, green, or blue
Chambray shirt in blue, pink, or white
Full Outfit Ideas
Use these examples to inspire your own cargo pants outfits:
Cargo Pants Outfit #1
Olive green cargo pants
White crew neck t-shirt
Black denim jacket
White sneakers
Cargo Pants Outfit #2
Tan cargo pants
Navy and white striped Breton shirt
Brown leather belt
Brown leather boots
Cargo Pants Outfit #3
Army green cargo pants
Gray long sleeve henley shirt
Black canvas high-top sneakers
Cargo Pants Outfit #4
Khaki cargo pants
Light blue polo shirt
Brown leather belt
Brown leather loafers
Key Takeaways
The oversized, casual look of cargo pants calls for balance. Choose shirt colors that complement the pants, opt for proper shirt fits, and aim for casual styles like tees, polos, and button-downs. Materials like cotton and linen work better than slicker fabrics. Feel free to tuck or untuck your shirt.
With some thoughtful styling, men's cargo pants can absolutely work for comfortable, casual outfits. Just be sure to balance the volume in the pants with well-fitting, complementary shirts up top. What shirt will you wear with your cargo pants?

Lost Tomb Lewks, Part 2
(Masterpost) (More Canary Frivolity)
Warning: mild spoilers for both seasons of The Lost Tomb Reboot
Look 6: Wu Xie busts out the clean & preppy look for a visit to his Second Uncle. He’s just a rich boy from a rich family, spare him his life...
Tumblr media
I really appreciate what the camera operator is doing for us here but I don’t feel like these jeans entirely do Wu Xie’s ass justice. Unfortunately, not every show can bespoke-tailor Zhu Yilong’s trousers onto him as if they were made of paint.
Tumblr media
This look features a cream-colored sweater with cable knit detailing down the front and ribbed raglan sleeves. Underneath he’s got a collared blue shirt with the collar tucked or buttoned down inside the sweater. Tight black jeans and pristine white kicks round out the look.
This outfit says, very relatably, “I am one person with my friends and another with my family.” One thing I like about this show is how it engages with the difficulty of balancing family obligations and one’s own life path. Wu Xie is pretty successful at being true to himself, his uncles, his friends, and the Wu legacy all at the same time, but he has to push back against a lot of demands in order to achieve that.
Tumblr media
Look 7: Uncle Wu Erbai gets to show off his fashion sense in this introductory scene, as well, wearing a shirt with a band collar and a double-breasted grey suit. His glasses are a combination of gold-color metal and brown plastic rims. Overall his looks says he’s a trendy, but not flashy, rich guy in later middle age.
Tumblr media
Look 8: Bad guy Xue is an asshole, but he wears a couple of pretty good outfits. This one features a clever twist on a tangzhuang jacket. The shape and frog fastenings of this jacket are like a normal tangzhuang, but the lapels and collar are cut like a western style suit jacket - but tailored to be worn up, not folded back like a western lapel. This creates an interesting neckline detail, in which the notch and open vee show off the clean cut of the standing shirt collar underneath.
Tumblr media
(more after the cut)
Look 9 is a good one for having a classic jump scare while exploring. The main part of this outfit is a practical olive green coat that we’ll be seeing more of. It’s got a good face-framing popped collar.
Tumblr media
It’s hard to see, but this outfit has a dark brown shirt with with a lighter-colored pocket on the front. The clothing in this show is full of interesting details, but the camera doesn’t consistently pause to examine them, being more interested in story, mood, and character development. Stupid camera.
Tumblr media
This look includes adorable driving gloves with a nice pierced-dot pattern.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is a good look for being wet, and admiring your wet boyfriend platonic life partner true love sworn brother soul mate adventure buddy fuck buddy lover friend.
This episode introduces Zhang QiLing and his first hoodie, but it’s so dark throughout his initial scenes that there’s not much to say about it except 1. it’s a hoodie 2. with a beautiful man inside it.  We’ll look more closely at his hoodies later in the series.
Tumblr media
Look 10: Fortunately the show wastes no time unwrapping QiLing’s torso, and pouring buckets of water on him so that Wu Xie we can admire his bod, which is entirely worthy of admiration. OP has put these lightning gifs in slow motion for the good of any flashing-sensitive brains out there. And for no other reason.
Tumblr media
This is a good look for....uh...this is a good look.
Tumblr media
Look 11 appears out of context at different points in the show, when Wu Xie sits at his tasteful table and writes in his tasteful deckle-edge journal with his tasteful fountain pen. The show does a great job giving each character a distinctive and consistent style. Wu Xie’s is always subtle except for his monstrous first look, with an emphasis on soft textural elements & a narrow range of earth tones. That go well with blood.
Tumblr media
This look features a soft marled cardigan over a thin sweater that looks like lambswool or cashmere. Something that can handle a very fine gauge machine knit, is soft, and throws back a nice glow when the light hits it. It has a tiny horizontal stripe. This sweater pairing is either grey, brown, yellow, or green; the scene lighting is warm and has a yellow cast, so it’s hard to say how much of the color is actually inherent in the clothing.
Tumblr media
Look at his lovely translucent ear.
Tumblr media
Wu Xie is wearing this look to write in his own Grave Robber’s Note, or his diary, at any rate.  If he wants to have someone to pass it along to, he’d better get busy, literally.
Tumblr media
This is a good look for contemplating your obligations to the future of your family, and wondering if now is a good time to talk about polyamory with your two favorite Xiao’s.

FANGAN CHARACTER DESIGNS YO HOLLER
I have been encouraged to post some of my fangan peeps' appearances and I shall do so with gratitude
Baiko Omori - Ultimate Lucky Student
Fitting his talent, Baiko looks average. His skin is tan from working in the sun and under his clothes, he is built quite wiry. He has an oval face and clean skin. His slim lips are always curved into a mysterious, blank smile and has a small, straight nose; the rest of his facial features are hidden by his bangs. He has rectangular, attentive, deep and soft blue eyes that display his emotions very clearly.
Baiko wears a dark blue turtleneck sweater and a used-looking light brown trench coat with a stand-up collar and big buttons that reaches his knees. Latter belonged to his grandfather. The collar of the turtleneck conceals an old scar across his throat that was stretched as he grew. He wears straight dark brown suit pants and shiny brown business shoes. He also carries a golden pocketwatch around his neck.
Baiko has long, dark brown hair and his slightly-tousled bangs reach over his eyes and up to the middle of the bridge of his nose. His hair dips a little into the collar of his coat, then bends and continues outside of the collar until his waist. He has an ahoge which curls to a square with soft edges.
Ei Hagakure - Ultimate Ghost Whisperer
Ei is a tall and lanky girl. She has dark skin and in her underweight phases, her bone structure becomes visible. She has a long face with half-closed eyes that make her look smug. Ei has three earlobe piercings on each ear. There are a hanging golden star and moon, a glob of green goo, an eyeball, a cartoon ghost, dango-like puffy balls colored gradient purple and a button.
Ei has dark-brown, almost black, frizzly hair that she keeps in two big buns on her head. Strands are falling into her face and framing her jaw. Inside her two buns, she keeps the antennas of her gear. They extend when she is scared.
Ei wears a lab coat that she has dyed pink. The symbol of her university is printed on the coat's lapel. Under her coat, she wears a loose t-shirt with a light-blue and yellow batik design that is stuffed in her pants. Her sweatpants-like pants are dark purple with a sand-colored strap and (the area on the end of a sweatpants where it tightens around the leg).
Ei's ghost detection device hangs around her neck. It is a vintage lunchbox with a surreal motto on it. One side is filled with a monitor, the other with three speed-indicator-like displays and a foldable keyboard.
Etsuya Iwata - Ultimate Opera Singer
Etsuya has an average body build and a slim face. He wears make-up, dark lilac-blue eyeshadow and thick eyeliner. He also added an artificial beauty mark above his upper lip. Etsuya has brown, rectangular eyes, so dark that they seem black.
As for clothing, Etsuya wears a mix of costumes for his roles. He wears a white loose shirt which is stuffed inside a dark red long and wide skirt with a golden vine pattern. A golden, glittery matador jacket is draped over his shoulders. A tag saying “Prop for: Etsuya Iwata'' is attached to its collar. Additionally, he wears dark brown slippers.
He has blond hair and styles it to round, big curls into a ponytail. A rose is tucked behind his ear.
(Etsuya is kinda just entirely based on the opera "Carmen" aksjjs)
Hideaki Yukiyama - Ultimate Mathematician
Hideaki is a small, thin boy. He has a round face and big, circular bright green eyes. He has a button nose and is usually seen with a wide grin. Hideaki styles his red hair to part in the middle and stick to the side like a clown or an owl.
Hideaki’s daily attire consists of a button-up shirt that looks three sizes too big for his frame, shorts and mid-calf high socks. The shirt is half black and half white, the black part is made out of velvet and has arithmetic operators in all colors and sizes on them. A cheap squirting prank flower is attached to the collar. His socks are green and red striped. His shorts and shoes are part of the uniform of his boarding school, his shorts are therefore strictly gray and straight and his shoes neatly shiny black.
(tbh I'm not satisfied with Hideaki's design yet. His early design was way too bright and chaotic but this one is kinda.... too dark and gray when I imagine Hideaki? I can recolor the shirt in also green/red but I fear that that's too much on the eye??? Idk man I'm an absolute fashion disaster and so is Hideaki am9sjehe)
Ichini - Ultimate Robotics Engineer
To be honest, I have a vision of Ichini but I don't have details since I haven't really done much with robots before. What I know that Ichini is absolutely massive and mostly uses angled shapes. Xe is a robot from the neck down. Xe has square, bulging shoulders, thick arms and giant hands. Instead of feet, xe just has flat metal clumps. In general, xe is very unproportional, wide torso, slim hips, short legs, also considering that xir head is still human and way too small for the rest of xir body. Xir hair is jet black with a cyan stripe, it's styled into one giant spike or multiple spikes that stand up from the back of xir head.
Jun Nagao - Ultimate Escapologist
Jun is of nearly average build, just a little thinner and smaller. His complexion is sickly. He has a round face. Due to his facioplegia, his expression is always stern, almost annoyed. His thin, straight eyebrows, slim lips and empty, light-gray eyes play a role in that. His brown hair is shaven. At the back of his head is a bald spot where the weapon hit that knocked him unconscious.
(The same weapon (probably a bat, a pipe or a baton) caused his head injury that lead to the paralysis of his face. It was the first abduction incident.)
He wears a long-sleeve shirt which is a bit oversized and of a yellow that almost seems dirty. The sleeves end in black leather and have a leather strip with a small buckle attached to them. The leather ends are folded up as not to hinder Jun's hands. The sleeves can be fixated like a straitjacket like a belt on several points on his chest and back, the other straps lined up in two rows like trench coat buttons. The leather looks used.
His tight pants are black and gray striped, horizontally but swirling down his legs. They're held up by an old brown leather belt with metal-rimmed holes on the entirety of it. On each belt loop hangs a different type of lock. Jun wears a chain around his neck like a necklace. The keys hanging from the chain fit the locks on his hip. In between the keys, two bobby pins can also be found.
He wears clunky-looking black boots that reach a little over his ankle, so that the ends of his pant legs disappear in the shoe. The black and yellow shoelaces are tied strangely and differently on each boot.
Kaida Tsutsumi - Ultimate Stock Broker
Kaida is small for her age and has inherited the classic looks of her family: slim, blonde hair and semi-rimless glasses. Her hair is cropped short and parted to a formal side parting. Her clothes are very formal as well: She wears a full, dark green suit, a white shirt and a tie that is held in place by a silver tie pin.
(Hm, I feel like Kaida needs more details in her designs and I really don't know what since they gotta relate to her talent somewhat.)
Kyo Kido - Ultimate Horror Author
Kyo is tall but his bent posture decreases his height. Though he is lanky, he has broad shoulders that don't quite fit him.
Kyo has a long face with slim features and high cheekbones. There are dark circles from tiredness under his white eyes. His hair is straight and dark blue; one side of his head is shaven, the other grown out to his shoulder.
He wears very casual clothing, a black t-shirt with a grey skull on the breast pocket stuffed into black ripped jeans, and worn, dirty white sneakers. Over the t-shirt, he wears a blue checkered flannel shirt. The t-shirt and jeans have strange red stains on them.
(idk if I'll add that as "OfFicIaL" but I just had the most random thought, what if the stains were soup stains that didn't wash out and that's why he doesn't like soup kjwjeheehe, everyone is like "Oh my God, that's probably blood on his clothes, eek, that's so creepy!" and Kyo is just standing there with his soup stains)
Maxis von Läuterbach - Ultimate Knight
Maxis is tall and wiry, however, seems slender. Because they are half-German, half-Novoselic, their complexion is accordingly Caucasian. They have yellow eyes with slits which makes them look dragon-like. They also have a big hawk nose and slim lips. Their hair is of a rather dirty blond, reaches to their chin and is parted in the middle. A golden circlet is placed on their brow.
Maxis' outfit is inspired by German medieval fashion and is mostly in blue and green. They wear a light blue tunic with a damask pattern and a golden belt where they keep their sheathed sword, a long cape, tight leggins, and loose brown leather boots.
(For reference, I searched up some medieval clothing, found this and took inspiration from the guy with the green cape in the bottom right corner. Fun fact, that guy is labeled with "Fürst" which translates to "prince", so yeah even in their clothing, Maxis goes full "You have reached the house of unrecognized talent.")
Miyoko Iwata - Ultimate DJ
Miyoko dresses in loose, mostly white clothing that is splattered with neon green, blue, yellow and pink paint. Her outfit consists of an old jeans jacket, a loose top, and wide ripped pants. She has styled her white hair into many independent ponytails. Most of her face, meaning half of her forehead, her eyes, and half of her cheeks, are covered by her visor. It is a black display with a white rim that displays kaomoji-like eyes in correspondence to her current mood. She has brightly painted nails.
(Yeah, Miyoko just goes >o<. Also when she is so utterly disappointed by something that she doesn't even have words for it, I imagine her visor just displays "......" Also I may or may not have stolen that visor idea and design from Godot from Ace Attorney but yeah, I did.)
Rokuro Nakatani - Ultimate Fraud
Rokuro has a slim, femininely shaped body and a chiseled face. He has slick black hair, one strand is falling into his face. In the style of a true con man, he wears a black suit without a tie and a long coat with a fur collar over his shoulders. His eyes are colored like emeralds and there is always a smug smile on his thin lips. Rokuro wears elaborate earrings and a myriad of big rings with gemstones set in them.
Shiori Ishimaru-Owada - Ultimate Team Captain
Shiori is tall and is built athletically, so she has broad shoulders and is decently muscular. She has an angular face, round eyes and short bushy eyebrows. Her eye color is a sort of pinkish. She has thin faded cut scars on her entire face. Her hair is brown-blackish, sorta shaggy and tamed into the stump of a ponytail. Bangs still fall in her face.
Shiori is dressed according to her talent and mostly in the colors of her ice hockey team: blue and orange. She wears a training jacket with the name of her team on the front and her surname and her number, 11, on the back, orange sport shorts which expose her toned legs, blue sneakers and a simple white shirt.
In addition, she has an elastic sport bandage around her left ankle and blue boxing bandages around her wrists and palms.
Tamae Shiroma - Ultimate Whistleblower
Tamae is a small, chubby girl. She is snuggled into comfortable clothing: a dark blue hoodie, black sweatpants and sneakers. She mostly wears her hood up and under it, a baseball cap that she can pull into her face to hide it. Under her cap, some of her locks spring out onto her forehead. Her hair is dyed lightly purple and she has an undercut at whose sides the dye is fading and her natural hair color, black, is coming through. Most of her hair is hidden under her cap though.
She has a round face, a big nose and squinting ink-black eyes. Her eyebrows aren't dyed and bushy and slightly bent upwards.

Holistic in nature, the Comme des Garçons SHIRT label has assisted young shoppers in exploring a personalized style-driven less by trends and even less so by dictation. Such a method is wholesome in its intriguing stance that counters any corporate case study or superficial look into the teenage mind. Whereas fashion and its surrounding industry seek to implement a set of rules and directional guidance each season, this forcefulness falls wayside to the true rebelliousness of the teen spirit. Stuck somewhere between childhood and impending adulthood, teenage boy's inability to fall in line with societal rules and regulations is at the heart of the Comme sub-label. As is similar to that of the brand's founder Rei Kawakubo, a nature of aggression and constant frustration dominates the seasonal displays. Spring Summer 2022 is furtherance of defiance as scoffing at discipline forms into a silent protest that averts tradition and modernity. This season's minimal display took form in striped patterns, graphic typography, and multi-dimensional separates that equip wearers with a youthful sophistication that only Rei Kawakubo could invent. Off-duty and appearing to have just awoken from a deep sleep, Comme’s SHIRT models stepped onto the scene with blank expression’s that read as if they would rather be anywhere but on the runway. Equipped with a stature of stress-free coolness, their uncombed hair and relaxed movement resurrected a lack of urgency that would define the aesthetic of the collection. Not taking fashion, or really anything for that matter, too seriously is what makes this vision and resulting work so enticing. Untuck the shirttails or elongate them, mix and match uncomplimentary stripes with one another, and rock cheetah print Asics, with these boys, fashion and style exist in two worlds entirely separate of coherence. Opening the collection was an ensemble of a brash red and black striped vest and matching button-down top. Wrapping around the elbow hung loose sleeves that served no function at all, while the red contrast stitching found on the black trousers tied the look together neatly. Red and black, two colors synonymous with risk and boldness, continued to be used in cardigan sweaters, cropped trousers, and t-shirts. Further in the collection, a lighter, playful side began to develop. After all, with an unformed identity and much growth to be had, teenager’s emotions often drift from angry to joyful, dominant to friendly within the blink of an eye. White and light blue buttoned downs and striped pocket windbreakers and parkas allude to a simplified option for those rebels with a cause. Polka dot and diamond checkered black and white prints to add something of spunk to the ensemble. Unexpected and quite smart were double-layered tops sewn in near the hem. Appearing as two shirts layered atop of one another, the piece, along with more nonfunctional added sleeves sporadically placed throughout the collection, exalt the magnificent patterns so familiar with that of Comme’s many other labels. Adventurous and observant, a scientific mindset accompanies this conceptual kid-at-heart philosophy. Doodling in textbooks and unknowingly digging deep into the creative subconscious has always been a rich tradition for young students whose attention and focus to math or English class is fleeting. Rather than diminish such endeavors, the SHIRT design team took to embracing the activity and incorporated graffitied text and imagery into monochromatic sets. The wording of “Splash”, “Splosh!”, and “Ditch!” find themselves placed next to abstract scribbles of random lines and bubble-letter imaginative phrases like “SLUP”. Characteristic of freedom and stepping outside the norm, the pure expressions of the communication stays with viewers for the chaotic bliss of emotional uncertainty. Is the wearer pissed off, jubilant, or downright bored? Either way, the items at hand were placed on revised menswear classics: moto vests with bias zippers, baggy shorts that extend just above the calf, and loose jackets with wide sleeves that taper to the base of the hand. Three outerwear options in black, formless shapes epitomize a reserved protectiveness that disregards conservation. Strong and daring, a hooded piece with a large front pocket and ruffled style lines embraced fluidity. Whilst not known as a label catering to a unisex audience, the reality of such styles attracts a gender non-specificity that caters to attitude rather than sex. Without skipping a beat, Comme des Garçons SHIRT delivered a message rife with consciousness. Lacking any fortitude to the COVID-19 pandemic, the easiness, and variety of the label’s apparel is consistently developed upon pointing to the well-oiled machine that is Comme des Garçons. For the design team and those involved in producing the line’s off-kilter fashion, SHIRT has provided an alternative for those youth driven by more than what would look good in an Instagram photo. Fashion for the carefree, calculated adolescent, SHIRT’s inability to comprise matches the spirited heart of its wearers.

But What Clothes Do You Truly Wear?
Most of us have more clothes than we need, and while there’s always that temptation to get more, the truth is only a small portion of our wardrobes make up our everyday wear. Vogue ran a story about this earlier this year, where they asked their editors which pieces they pull out most often from their mountain of options. I decided to pose the same question to some of my favorite people in the menswear industry. With what we assume are ginormous wardrobes in their closets, what clothes do they truly wear on a daily basis? Yesterday we covered four modern style icons -- here’s a look at the personal daily habits of four more.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Michael Hill, Creative Director at Drake’s
The things I reach for the most aren’t terribly interesting, but hopefully they come together in an interesting way. I mostly wear my unlined suede chukkas and unlined shell cordovan penny loafers from Alden. I like grey flannels and heavy corduroys a lot. I mostly wear long-point, oxford-cloth button-downs, particularly in blue and white stripes. Ties tend to be either blue or green. I love tweed jackets. I have two in solid navy and solid green, but the others are patterned sport coats in earthy browns.
The one thing that might be unusual is my love for cotton suits, particularly in bright blues and drab olives. Wool is a wonderful fiber -- it keeps its shape, it has a spring to it, and it can look well pressed. I love cotton suits for all the reason why people hate them. They’re stiff, they crumple, the color fades. I can picture my cotton suit sitting on the end of my rail at home now. The way the sleeves curl, it looks like my arms are in them, and the sleeves will probably stay like that even after the jacket has been cleaned. If you get one in a heavy drill cotton, the fabric almost moulds to your body. That’s the wonderful thing about cotton suits. They’re casual and age with you, much like a good pair of jeans.
I also love my M-65 jacket. I wear it over tailored clothing, but also casually. It’s an easy go-to and great for travel. There are so many big pockets, you almost don’t even need a bag. I live on a farm out in the countryside in Devonshire, so waxed cotton Barbour jackets and bucket hats are useful.
There are also some things here and there I usually reach for on the weekend. A pair of taupe-colored needlecord pants I bought in Japan; some Chromexcel moccasins from the New England Outerwear Company, which have these rubber outsoles. They’re such brilliant casual pieces. I wear a lot of sturdy knitwear, such as Shetlands and sweatshirts. I don’t like knits that feel too luxurious and fine. One odd thing about sweatshirts is that I don’t like them in the more classic grey. My wife wears my grey ones now, but the color doesn’t work for me. I’m too pasty. Instead, I like them in olive and indigo.
Lastly, I have a few nice watches, but I mostly just wear things from Swatch. I have a few semi-translucent ones in bright colors such as green, yellow, and orange. I also have a few solid colors as well. I love when they do the really simple ones in solid colors. Yellow is my favorite color, but it doesn’t do well against my skin. I think I can away with it on my wrist though.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ethan Newton, Co-Founder of Bryceland’s
My day-to-day wardrobe changes according to where I am, but I always have a few things that I call my sartorial comfort food.
The first is a Stetson Stratoliner from the 1950s. As a big baldy with a tendency to squint his eyes and get sunburnt, I’m rarely without a lid on my noggin. And while I have some amazing custom pieces from a few great makers, there’s something about this soft, broken-down piece of Silverbelly Beaver that I can’t seem to replicate. I wear it with everything from three-pieces suits to rayon shirts paired with denim and boots. Its versatility comes from never being too perfectly matched with whatever I’m wearing.
I also get a lot of wear out of my navy blazer. The idea of a staple navy jacket has been repeated ad-nauseam, but the simple fact is that it really is useful. I have a full-handed, reasonably heavy jacket made in a basket-weave Sportex fabric by Dormeuil. The fabric’s crunch and solidity make it perfect for everything from grey flannels and wide-waled, wheat cords, to my favorite P44 USMC cargos and busted-down 501s. If I had the time, I would get another navy sport coat in Fox Flannel’s amazing 430g basket-weave jacketing -- a fabric that has such structure that it seems to always fall like iron.
Finally, I’m always carrying my world around with me, from my smokes to my camera to whatever book I’m reading at the time. I use our Bryceland’s leather tote for these purposes, which is based off a vintage L.L. Bean tote my business partner Kenji found. It’s simply built from a soft, but sturdy leather, and the tan color works well with black or brown accessories. It’s simple, rugged, and utilitarian -- what I hope as a brand we stand for -- and the simplicity of the design lends itself well to customization. I’ve adorned mine with vintage silver pieces and a bandana at the handle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
George Wang, Founder of BRIO
I think most people buy for versatility, but people in the clothing trade often have much more extensive wardrobes. Still, we live in the real world and often fall into a repetitive lifestyle, just like everyone else. Only a small portion of my wardrobe is used on a daily basis.
In the spring and summer months, I wear a lot of cotton and linen button-down shirts, as well as open-weave voile shirts in light blue. My most used jackets tend to be navy single- and double-breasted sport coats. They pair well with gray Fresco trousers, which are useful given how hot summers can get in Beijing. Beige is also a great summer color. I wear a cream silk-linen sport coat with navy trousers, as well as beige linen trousers with navy jackets. Blue cotton suits can also be great.
To dress down tailored clothing, I like long-sleeved knitted polos. They work in either light or dark colors. And on weekends, I’m usually just in sweats, shorts, or jeans. For shoes, I mostly rely on my unlined, brown calfskin Edward Green penny loafers and shell cordovan Alden loafers -- either tassels or pennies.
Naturally, fall and winter are about heavier fabrics. I wear a lot of tweed once the weather gets cold -- sport coats in green Game Keepers tweed, brown herringbone tweed, and grey Donegal tweed. Navy serge blazer is nice for a slightly sharper, crisper look. Trousers tend to be either grey flannel or beige cavalry twill. If I need to wear suits for business, it’s usually a grey thornproof single-breasted suit this time of year, or a heavy, blue worsted double-breasted.
There are also just some things I find are useful for both keeping warm and looking stylish. A thick, rollneck sweater in either cream or navy; a waxed cotton Barbour jacket. If I need a coat to throw over tailored clothing, it’s usually my grey herringbone Ulster coat or camel-colored polo. I have a Woolrich arctic parka I rely on a lot for weekends. Shoes are still mostly Alden, but I also wear my brown suede oxfords from Edward Green a lot. They go well with suits.

Gabriel Öberg Bustad, Manager at Skoaktiebolaget
Unfortunately, when trying to describe my personal style, I find my description often sounds dull and lacking in personality. Nevertheless, I like classic and conservative clothing, typically with muted, subtle colors and few (if any) patterns or details standing out. I love balance and harmony in my clothing, and look for things that are in keeping with my calm personality. I love to have the opportunity to work with skilled craftsmen and women who enhance my good sides and assist me in hiding or mitigating my not-so-good sides.
Summers are short here in Northern Europe, so I’ve prioritized my fall and winter wardrobe. For comfort and style, I can’t stress enough how useful it is to have a classic, double-breasted overcoat in navy. I have one from Sartoria Corcos in Florence, Italy, which is made from a wool-cashmere blend overcoating. The blend gives the fabric a softer touch, but it’s still insulating enough for our Scandinavian weather. I’m a huge fan of trench coats for the same purposes, particularly for fall. I own four of them in different colors.
For sport coats, I find my brown houndstooth sport coat is very versatile. It’s made from a cashmere fabric woven by Zegna. I wear it with mid-gray wool flannel trousers and brown, apron-toe derbies from Saint Crispin’s (it’s their 633 model). The three are easy to wear, classic, and stylish, and look great together or with other things.

Legging Outfits For Travel-20 Travel Bloggers Approved Looks
Some of us love traveling. Some of us are not so enthused. But all of us can agree that being both comfortable and stylish is an absolute non-negotiable. Enter: leggings. They are the perfect article of clothing, whether you are flying, traveling by bus, or are planning your holiday wardrobe.
They pair well with almost any top and you can dress them up or down according to your needs. Plus, they take up way less space than your stack of vacation jeans. For this article, we have compiled 20 outfits to inspire you to find your perfect leggings for traveling.
How To Wear Leggings When Traveling?
But before we get into that, let’s talk about some tips to help you find…The Best Leggings for Traveling:
Opt for well-fitting, form-sculpting leggings with a high waist
Consider compression leggings if you know you will be sitting for long periods of time
Whenever possible, go for moisture-wicking leggings which will keep you dry and comfortable no matter the temperature
Seamless leggings are the height of comfort – when in doubt, go seamless!
The more opaque the better as nobody wants to be worrying about undergarments showing
Without further ado, let’s get started with our outfits!
↓20. Perfect Leggings For Traveling to Colder Places

These are a Few of my Favorite Things
Quality is a necessity for me. Products and pieces I buy need to have lasting value and work well. After reading the book “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up” by Marie Kondo, I was so enthralled by Marie’s love and affection towards the things she owned. She gives her items the care that one would give to a small child, doing things like “giving them a home” and “saying goodnight to them at the end of the night.” It seems a bit silly, crazy almost, to treat inanimate objects as having thoughts or feelings, but she claims this respect for  the things you own has an impact on your life.
While I don't say thank you to my hairbrush after brushing my hair, I do see what she’s saying in terms of loving the things you buy. Having a love for your perfume or jeans really affects my mood and behavior. I find myself a lot calmer when I am wearing my perfume, and more confident when my eyeliner looks good. I appreciate the things I buy, and so I invest my money into things that will make me happy. I love items with history, a story to tell. I feel like I’m continuing on their journey by using them.
Here are ten items I swear by, and kinda love.
Mason Pearson Hairbrush
Tumblr media
Like I said, I love a piece with history, but I also love a piece that works, obviously. I have a tendency to want the best of everything I have. I always look up “best white t shirt” or “best eyeliner”. And that is how I found this brush. Founded by Englishman Mason Pearson way back in 1885, it is considered the best hairbrush of all time. The brush is, kind of beautiful? Coming in a box that with artwork that looks like it came from the 1950′s, the hairbrush features fine boar bristles set on a pneumatic rubber cushion. The wooden handle has the name detailed in gold. The set also comes with a little cleaner brush to get out all your nasty hair from the brush when you’re done. The hairbrush just does stuff to my hair that no dollar store brush has ever done. The boar bristles gently collect each strand of my hair, and disperse the oils that hang out at my roots  to my dried out ends. A steep price for a brush, but I don't see this item leaving my cosmetic case for years and years to come.
Chanel No. 5
Tumblr media
Infamous is the only word I can use to describe this perfume. Even if you didn't know you know about it, you always kinda knew about it. Chanel No. 5 is seen as the most classic fragrance in the world. Marilyn Monroe even teased reporters claiming it was all she wore to bed. After creating somewhat of an empire and name for herself, Coco Chanel wanted a scent to capture her reinvention of the modern woman in the 20′s. In an effort to create a “clean” fragrance that lasted on the skin, Chanel had perfumer Ernest Beaux create a variety of perfumes that would fit her request. She smelled a collection of fragrances Beaux created numbered 1 to 5, and 20 to 24. She picked number five, hence the name. The scent, concocted from jasmine, rose, sandalwood, and vanilla, was marketed as the scent of a woman. The scent of power that women at the time couldn't have. The scent has been changed over the years, much to the public’s dislike. The newer version smells a lot more like baby powder and less graceful. If you go online, you can find vintage bottles of the pure parfum, more potent and vibrant than the Eau De Parfum that we see so often today. Again, a steep price to pay for a perfume. I got mine online, completely sealed, for about $150. Not a big bottle either. But even after knocking it over, taking it between New York and Florida tons of times as well as overseas, I still have over half a bottle left after two years. The beautiful golden liquid comes in a glass bottle and lid, if you get your hands on a vintage one. The bottle is meant to be turned over, soaking the glass cap. You then dab the cap on your wrists, neck, and wherever else you’d like. I think the bottle, over one with a spritzer, is what makes the perfume last so long. That, and you need so little of the perfume because of its potency. Some say the perfume smells like an old lady, but I think to each their own. When I wear the perfume, I smell strength, confidence, and some vanilla too. I agree it does smell mature, but the comfort I get when wearing this perfume does more for me than anything else. It is the warmth of a blanket, the lightness of a linen shirt, and the depth of a classic movie. I feel Coco Chanel with me when I wear this perfume, and I feel like a woman.
Cartier Tank Watch
Tumblr media
The luxury brand Cartier, nowadays, seems to be most recognized with their Love collection, popularized by Kylie Jenner. And while I love the Love Collection (feeling punny today, sorry) it comes off as a little...overused? There’s just something not special about it if everyone who has the money to drop on it gets one. Completely disregard this if I ever come into money because I will for sure buy a love bracelet. But for now, saying it’s too trendy makes me feel a little better about not having one, but I digress. The tank watch, on the other hand, is a timeless piece (oh my god, so punny I am SO SORRY) created in 1917 by Cartier after the American troops arrived in France and helped to save the European Nations. Successful American and British armies relied on tanks, a novelty at that time on battlefields. The watch, is inspired by British Tanks with it’s flat and angular case. The sleek design and leather strap on this small watch caught the eyes of some of the most famous and powerful women including Jackie Kennedy, Lady Di, and even Michelle Obama. The watch is a small piece of jewelry that adds statement when worn. I am not a watch person, but this watch does it for me. It exudes sophistication, class, and time!
Levi’s 501 Jeans
Tumblr media
The ever-so recognizable stitching on the the back pocket of these jeans has been around for generations. Your parents definitely had a pair. They were a staple for the 90′s mom jeans and have come back in style with the high waisted shorts and straight leg jean revolution. Though, did they ever really go away? Dating back to 1890, the Levi’s 501 XX jeans are the original 5 pocket jeans that we all wear today. I’d always known about Levi’s jeans (who doesn't?) but I always saw them as a mom brand or dad with white sneakers brand. Not until middle school did I start seeing the famous back pockets on high waisted cut off shorts that girls wore with crop tops or over swimsuits. I still wasn't convinced. It took me until more recently, when I followed French fashion bloggers to notice everyone had a pair of these Levi’s 501 jeans, and they looked good, really good. Not only did they cinch and lift where they were supposed too, but they looked good with just about anything. I've seen them dressed up with lace bodysuits and blazers, or dressed down with a t shirt tucked in. They give of a carefree, casual look while at the same time, projecting quality, functionality, and of course, history. It takes a while to find a good pair of 501′s in the cut and size you’re looking for. They are at just about every thrift store around, but I’ve never seen a pair that resembles the one’s I see on blogs. It took me a great deal or searching to finally find a light blue pair in a size 27 (I’m a size 25 but vintage sizes are two sizes larger than your normal number) on depop. They are a straight leg jeans, kind of in between skinny jeans and boyfriend jeans. I immediately cut them off a couple inches because I’m short and obsessed with cropped jeans. And I can attest to the magic of these jeans (Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants anyone?). They are super high waisted, creating a silhouette all of us desire. They give you a Kim K butt by lifting your cheeks to the Gods. And the loose leg, which I thought I would hate, creates a relaxed look while still shaping your legs. These jeans are forever, I swear.
Black Cigarette Pants
Tumblr media
These black cropped pants have been a staple for me for a while. I've had pairs from just about every brand, most recently being LOFT. Cigarette pants stood for the revolutionary wave of women being able to wear pants in the 1950′s. Inspired by men’s slacks, they were undoubtedly an expression of freedom that was beginning to come for women at the time. Cigarette pants are high-waisted and tight fitting. They formed to a woman's figure and showed off her greatest assests. The cropped hem, which ended just above the ankle, provided length for the leg. It suited, and still suits, every body shape there is. Women like Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe were big fans of the cigarette pants, as am I. I tend to grab these pants every day that I’m not wearing jeans. They're so easy to wear it’s not even funny. I throw on a turtleneck, my cigarette pants, and ballet flats and I’m all set. Work, school, a bar, wherever you go these pants will work. I've had a couple pairs, but usually one at a time, and always in black. I look for a high waist, side pockets, and tight (but not skinny jean tight) legs. I almost always have to crop them or hem them because I have unreasonably short legs, but it’s worth the hassle.
Charvet Shirt
Tumblr media
I had always been looking for a good quality button down (button up? What’s the difference?) but every single one I was recommended was always kind of...meh. It wasn't until I was reading an interview from Sofia Coppola, who is one of my style idols, where she said her go to "uniform” was a Charvet men’s shirt and pants. So of course I had to have one. The French shirtmaker Charvet has been the place where men get their perfectly tailored shirts and suits since 1838. The Brand, founded by Monsieur Joseph-Christophe Charvet, has supplied shirts to Charles de Gaulle, Winston Churchill and Yves Saint Laurent. The classic Charvet shirt is white, but the French brand carries blue, stripes, and just about any other color you can dream of. The clean cut shirt is made from premier cotton. The collar alone is made with six layers of unfused cloth.  Buttons are Australian mother-of-pearl, from the surface of the oyster shell for better strength and color clarity. Each shirt takes thirty days to complete. This amount of craftsmanship and quality is reflected in the price. The men’s classic shirt is priced at $695 on Neiman Marcus. However, secondhand you can purchase the shirt, men’s or women’s, for under $100. I snagged a women’s blue and white vertical striped shirt on poshmark and when I tell you this is the nicest button down shirt I have ever owned, I mean it. It’s thick cotton is heavy enough to be opaque but light enough to give a clean cut look. It’s so soft I want to sleep in it. I have washed it, dried it, and done unspeakable things to a shirt of this value, and it is still in mint condition. It dresses up or down and fits me like a glove. I am with Ms. Coppola on this one. This shirt has become a “uniform” for me.
Yves Saint Laurent “Smoking Jacket”
Tumblr media
No I don't own a YSL smoking jacket. BUT, I do own a couple of blazers that are the same thing to me. Officially named “Yves Saint Laurent Le Smoking Suit”, it was the first tuxedo for women. There is a trend with me and “revolutionary women’s clothes”, I know. In 1966, designer Yves Saint Laurent created “Le Smoking” as an alternative to the little black dress. The tuxedo style suit was made for women, taking inspiration from men’s tuxedos, Laurent added feminine shapes and curves to the suit to create a more womanly figure. The three piece suit was made famous by Helmut Lang’s pictures above, which featured androgynous models with slicked back hair, smoking cigarettes in the streets of Paris. The suit, stood for influence and power for women at a time when women were still expected to wear skirts and dresses. The suit, especially the blazer for me, oozes sex appeal and class. Blazers add such a statement to an outfit. I can't help but want to throw on a blazer everyday and while it’s not a Saint Laurent jacket, it still counts. One day YSL, one day.
Burberry Trench Coat
Tumblr media
Possibly one of my favorite items of clothing, ever? There is not a time or a place where I don't bring my trench coat. I wear it in the spring, summer, fall, and winter. Anytime it is acceptable, or even not acceptable, to wear a trench coat, I do. The coat was designed in 1912 by Thomas Gabardine to protect WW1 military personnel from wind and rain. It is made from gabardine, a tough and hard-wearing fabric that Mr. Burberry actually invented in the late 1800s. The trench coat made its way from officers to everyday people because of its sleek and verstatile design, attracting film stars and royals. The inside of the trench is lined with the classic Burberry checkered pattern. This jacket is my second skin. I have worn it with jeans, dresses, shorts, even pajamas. It feels amazing on the skin, the lightweight lining feels like silk and the heavy gabardine fabric is tough and hard to ruin (this is big for me, I drop a lot of sauces). It can be a light jacket in the warmer months, or layered in the cooler months. I often wear it with the belt tied in the back, and unbuttoned for a more casual look. I love this jacket so much I sometimes wear it around the house just to feel better. I will never, ever, not wear my trench coat.
Jane Birkin Basket Bag
Tumblr media
This item is actually a new one for me that I purchased this past summer. I've always known about French Actress Jane Birkin, but I never really understood her thing about straw bags? Jane Birkin is the inspiration for the infamous Hermes Birkin Bags, and she has her straw bag to thank for that. Hermes chief executive Jean-Louis Dumas was sat next Birkin on an airplane when her items fell out of her straw bag. He created the Birkin, a handbag with a solid bottom, like her straw bag. She liked straw basket bags because of their sturdy and solid structure. The straw basket bags have been a “trend”, I hate to say, for the past two years with just about every French blogger carrying one. It took me a while to catch on, I saw it as being a little...old woman at the market? But I quickly liked the natural aesthetic it brings to an outfit, even a all black classy outfit. Its light, and airy, something that is often needed, especially in New York where its all dark colors always. I purchased my basket bag on etsy and have never looked bag. I add bandanas and scarves to the handles, making it look different every day. It has sort of become a statement piece for me and I have grown my straw bag collection to include a larger straw tote and a slouchy shoulder bag. I hope it holds up!
E. Porselli Ballet Flats
Tumblr media
Last, but most. certainly. not. least. My favorite shoes in the entire world, E. Porselli black ballet flats. I don't ever have to think about shoes with an outfit, because it’s always my flats. Even in the dead of winter, in the snow, I wear my flats. These shoes have been my staple for a couple years now, and I get happier each time I wear them. The ballet flat, obviously derived from the Ballerina shoe, has been around since the 16th century. They went in and out of style after the high heel came around, but were brought back to life when Audrey Hepburn wore them in Funny Face. Repetto is actually the more classic ballet shoe brand, but for some reason I prefer the slipper-like style of E. Porselli’s. They’re lightweight, but they can handle the extreme walking I do in the city. I have this obsession with my feet looking slim and small, and will not wear a shoe if they’re even slightly clunky (sorry boots!) But ballet flats are the epitome of my style. I have nothing more to say.

How To Match Every Element Of Your Suit
http://fashion-trendin.com/how-to-match-every-element-of-your-suit/
How To Match Every Element Of Your Suit
There’s more to a good suit than a good fit. That sounds like sartorial sacrilege but it’s true (dig out your prom photos for shuddersome evidence). Yes, a tailored two-piece is the foundation every buttoned-up gent should aspire to, but that’s just the starting point of looking good in formalwear.
Where suiting goes from an art to a science is in the details. You need to know your elements, and they need to know each other. Your shirt must complement your suit. Your tie must complement your shirt. Your pocket square must complement everything. And we haven’t even got to footwear yet.
No matter how much tailoring has relaxed in recent years, there are rules that govern all the above.
First, The Basics
Before we get into the formulae of formalwear, let’s make sure the fundamentals are covered. Since most men rarely invest in a new suit, refresh your current look with a well-stocked rotation of everything else, says Ryan Haynes, a buyer at designer menswear store Coggles. “Buy a minimum of five shirts that’ll complement your suit. Classic white and pale blue go with most things, and it’s worth spending a little extra for the quality.”
Once you start adding accessories, there are two common mistakes men make, says Sarah Gilfillan, founder of personal styling service Sartoria Lab. “There’s either a reluctance to mix patterns, which creates a boring look with a plain suit, shirt and tie. Or, there are too many patterns that shout for attention, and the resulting look is confused.
“The easiest way to match your tailoring is to limit the statement to one piece, and keep the rest plain: a patterned suit with plain pieces elsewhere, or vice versa.”
That covers the basics. The next step requires a masters in menswear, including an understanding of complementary shades, finishing touches and shoe suitability – knowledge that we managed to glean from the experts below.
Suit + Shirt
This is the bedrock of your entire look: get the pairing right and you’re on course to build a suit of armour. Get it wrong and you’ll look like an Apprentice reject.
“A crisp, classic white shirt will never fail, and sits with all suit colours and tones,” says Alan Cook, menswear design lead at Marks & Spencer. “That said, lilac and purple are just two tones that work well with grey or navy suits, while soft greys and periwinkle are sound choices with black or charcoal tailoring.”
If you want to cast your dye a little wider with on-trend coloured tailoring, play it safe by keeping things neutral. If you’re experimenting with a deep green suit or burgundy suit, try a lighter version of the same shade on your suit. The tonal trick also works on more standard colours to give your outfit depth, says Cook. “A cornflower blue shirt with a microprint looks incredible within a wider indigo suit.”
Outfit Inspiration
Shirt + Tie
Air ties, roll necks and T-shirts are all fair game under a blazer these days, and with the menswear menagerie so crowded, it’s tempting to put the humble tie on the endangered species list. That would be a mistake. A shirt and tie may sit on the conservative end of the dress code spectrum, but it’s a classic combo for a reason. Do it right, and it’s about much more than looking good. This timeless pairing can make you appear trustworthy and employable.
“The search for a tie can be overwhelming,” admits Allyson Lewis, CEO of The Tie Bar. “There are so many colours, fabrications, patterns and textures, but it needn’t be this way. Once you’ve confirmed the general dress code, identify the overarching colour: your tie should, ultimately, complement the dominate shade with an overall colour or stripe, or opt for a pattern or colour that’s in contrast.”
Try matching a rich blue tie with a sky-blue shirt and dark navy suit for a tonal look, or a red tie for some colour-pop contrast. If you’re wearing grey, stick with muted tones such as brown or burgundy, or choose a black tie for a sharp salt-and-pepper effect. If you’re wearing a black suit, and you’re light skinned, use the tie to dial down the contrast between you and the suit by opting for a warm colour like burgundy.
Lewis also cautions that not all shirt and tie combinations work, and you should swerve ‘holiday cheer’ at all costs. “Avoid any pairings that invoke thoughts of a specific holiday: red and green, black and orange, red, white and blue and so on and so forth. While it is possible to pull off such combos, it’s a delicate balancing act that can come across costumey as opposed to polished.”
Outfit Inspiration
Pocket Square + Suit + Tie
From Pitti peacocks to corporate careerists, a pocket square has become an essential component of a suit. A finer detail for sure, but one that’s still subject to the rules.
“A strong match between a pocket square, shirt and tie is mainly based on the colour,” says Danny O’Neill, sales manager at Moss Bros. “It doesn’t necessarily have to be the same print or texture as long as the shades work together.” In fact, something too samey can look a bit too perfect – a bit wedding starter pack. And of course, some colour combinations work far better than others.
Feel free to experiment with material and print, too. “There isn’t an ideal fabric or one to be avoided – with pocket squares you can be as adventurous with the fabrics and prints as you like,” says O’Neill. “However, it is important that the colour should complement either the shirt or tie.”
The safest option is to pair a white shirt with a white pocket square. For a more advanced approach, look for a patterned pocket square where the secondary colour matches the tie, or go tonal with a subtle change of shade between the shirt, tie and square.
Outfit Inspiration
Socks + Suit
Justin Trudeau may bask in soaring approval rates, but, sock horror, he doesn’t always put his best foot forward when matching his hosiery with his tailoring. Canada’s leading man has punctured many a strong look with an ill-advised, novelty sock, and every guy should eschew the Chewbacca feet for something more appropriate.
A foolproof technique is to match the colour of your socks with the colour of your trousers. Black on black, navy on navy, fifty shades of grey.
For a slightly less safe (read: boring) approach, look out for subtle details within an outfit to highlight with your socks, says Ryan Palmer, co-founder of The London Sock Company. “Things like the lining of a suit jacket, a colour detail on the belt, or your pocket square or cufflinks.”
Know that some combinations are easier to pull off than others, too. “Classic dressers should opt for black, burgundy or dark greys socks – especially when you’re wearing a darker suit,” says Palmer. “Or, if you do decide to spin the colour wheel, mustard, turquoise and red sit especially well with navy tailoring thanks to the contrast.” If you do take this route though, ensure the vibrancy is limited to your ankles only.
Outfit Inspiration
Suit + Shoes
Now, nobody is saying you need a sneakerhead-style walk-in wardrobe, but every man should own at least a few colours and styles of work shoes. A single pair won’t sit with every suit hanging on your rail, but when it comes to matching your shoes and trousers, some are more versatile than others.
Always wear black shoes with a black suit and recycle them for deep navy business suits when you have a day in boardroom. Chocolate brown shoes will work with your staple navy and grey tailoring, and it’s also worth keep something a little less formal in your rotation for dress-down days.
“Deep, dark claret shoes work well across a range of suit colours, from black and navy to dark brown and grey,” says Phill Tarling, a stylist who counts Tom Hardy on his client list. “Tan brogues can be worn with blue and grey suits also, but they don’t work with darker tones.”
It’s not just the colour to consider, but the style of shoe too. “My advice is to keep your footwear simple – a classic brogue, Derby or loafer for a classic suit. It’s much easier to make a statement up-top with your accessories than it is your footwear.”
Outfit Inspiration
Cufflinks + Suit
Once you’ve got the main show sorted, it’s onto the support acts. Some well-deployed accessories, like cufflinks, can lift a look from standard to headliner – providing you pick the right ones.
“Wearing cufflinks can be a way to add personality to a formal outfit,” says Kate Regan, head designer at British tailoring outfit Hawes & Curtis. “While some abstract cufflinks are acceptable, they should be out of bounds with a dinner suit or on smarter occasions.” And if you’re wearing a shirt that requires cufflinks, chances are it’s such an event.
“When wearing a white shirt, you can experiment with any colour, pattern or shape cufflinks, unless you’re in a strict formal environment,” says Regan. “Gold designs really stand out against a light blue or navy shirt, while black onyx is better suited to black tie.” So that means having at least two sets in your arsenal, lest you go too Diddy at the office, or too muted at the top table.
Outfit Inspiration
Leather Accessories
If your 9-5 demands a suit, it’s worth investing in fine leather goods to match because you’ll get the wear out of them: the belt, the briefcase and the shoes. But such pieces should chime just as well as the threads on your back.
“The classic rule is well-known: leathers should always match leathers, so if your shoes are brown, your belt should be too,” says Mariya Dykalo, creative director at Aspinal of London. “The rule applies to briefcases too if you’re wearing all-black. However, other coloured suits don’t have to match.” Good news, especially since a good leather laptop case doesn’t come cheap.
“The colour of the leathers you choose can speak volumes about your personality. Opt for all-black accessories when you need to look sharp and corporate, but switch for tan on the weekend. Either way, they should be of complementary colours or varying neutrals. And you can never go wrong with navy – less formal but always classic.”
