I can’t tell you how excited I was when I first saw Finn in The Force Awakens promos. I could already tell he’d be a great character because he’s a stormtrooper who obviously was force sensitive. The shot of Finn holding a lightsaber got me so hyped that I bought tickets for the opening weekend. Finn was the highlight of TFA and I kept gushing about him to my friends. I was even looking forward to the comics. I was so excited for the next movie. If Finn wasn’t going to be trained by Luke, then he’ll obviously become the next leader of the Resistance because he provided valuable information that led to the destruction of the Starkiller Base, he went personally to rescue his friend and he took on the leader of the Knights of Ren.
I was so excited for the next movie but it was obvious that Finn was missing in the promos. In hindsight I feel so dumb for thinking, ‘there’s no way they’d waste a character like Finn. He’s probably doing things in the movie that are too spoiler-y’ but again I was making assumptions based on how Finn was initially promoted and how he was received positively by critics and the audience. When the movie was released, I was disappointed but I still tried to find something I liked about Finn’s arc because I wasn’t ready to admit that I was tricked and Finn was downgraded to the supporting cast. Once again his Stormtrooper past wasn’t touched on except in his confrontation with Phasma. There’s so much they could have done with Finn. He was forced to join the First Order, he knows Stormtroopers were brainwashed. Imagine if after leaving Canto Bight, Finn inspired some Stormtroopers to defect. That would be a fitting ending to his arc in TLJ but the movie was more interested in Reylo than anything else.
Somehow JJ Abrams managed to trick me again. Finn is force sensitive in TROS but he doesn’t do anything with it. Instead he seems to spend the entire movie repeating the third act of TFA where it’s just ‘Rey! Rey!’
Out of all the new characters, Finn is the easiest to write. Thanks to John, the audience understands Finn. Having him deal with his time as a child soldier, have him question everything he has been taught, have him step up as a leader, have him actually affect the plot in TLJ and TROS would have fixed every problem and ensured that he becomes a beloved character. It’s because writing Finn isn’t difficult that I know Disney and everyone involved chose to waste his character.
