Tumblr media
Pairing: Jake Seresin x female reader
Word Count: 1440 (ish)
A/N: Written for @sailor-aviator’s Christmas Writing Challenge. My word was candy cane. To be super honest, I completely forgot I had to write this until last night and went through about 5 ideas before I landed on this today. Thanks to @buckysdollforlife for the quick beta-ing they did earlier. Part of the Jake & Dewey ‘Verse. GIF by @babyrooster
Dividers by: @saradika (Go check out her others, they're awesome!!!)
Warnings: Super fluffy and honestly? The most suggestive thing I’ve written…ever. So yeah, implied future smut I guess?

MERRY CRISIS EVERYONE!!!
Tumblr media
When you’d told Jake that your favorite thing about Christmas was candy canes and other peppermint flavored things, you didn’t think he’d go this hard with it.
Tumblr media
On December 1st, you shambled into the kitchen to see Jake standing at the island with a steaming mug in his hand and a big smile on his face.
“Merry Christmas sweetheart.” He leaned down to press a kiss to your lips and when you pulled away, you took a sip of your coffee.
“Jake! You made me a Peppermint Mocha?!”
“Of course I did, it’s your favorite.”
“Maybe you should change your callsign to 'Starbies'.”
Tumblr media
On December 2nd, you woke to find a big bag of the Ghirardelli Peppermint Bark Squares on your nightstand with a short note I love you so much baby. Enjoy your minty snack!
You took the bag with you to work and shared the love with your coworkers. On your lunch hour, you headed over to the Exchange to meet up with Bob for lunch and shared some with him, giving him extra to share with the other Daggers.
“Hey Bobbers? Could you give Jake something extra for me please?”
“Sure Dew, what is it?” You planted a kiss on Bob’s cheek and he turned red and smiled. “I can’t guarantee he’s going to appreciate it as much since it’s not coming from you.”
Tumblr media
It went like that for the next week or so. Candy cane themed gifts for you every day. Knee high socks covered in candy canes, some earrings you’d seen on TikTok, all kinds of candies that were putting out their peppermint flavored things.
Two weeks before Christmas, Jake came home with news that he and the other Daggers (Mav included) were going to be gone until a few days before the holiday to several Naval Air Stations starting in New Jersey and ending back home in San Diego. You didn’t know all the facts, because all Jake could tell you was that it had to do with the Uranium Mission (since you were Mickey’s only family and Jake’s partner, Mav had said that all you could really know was that it was dangerous and that the squad called it the Uranium Mission).
Jake promised his gifts would keep going in his absence, even when you told him they didn’t need to.
Tumblr media
The first day he was gone, you went to the Hard Deck to have dinner with Halo, a recent friend. Halo waved when she saw you walk in and you joined her at the end of the bar, where you greeted Penny.
“Hey Pen, missing Mav already?”
“Always do”, she replied with a smile. After you and Halo gave her your dinner order, she placed a glass down in front of you.
“What’s this?”
“Hangman asked me to get you a peppermint flavored drink every time you come in while they’re all gone.” She pulls a mini-candy cane from under the bar and sticks it in the glass. “This here is a Peppermint Piña Colada. Enjoy.”
“What’s with all the peppermint?” asked Callie.
“Last month, I told Jake that one of my favorite things about Christmas was candy canes and peppermint flavored stuff. Since December 1st, he’s given me something peppermint flavored or candy cane themed every single day.” You took a sip of your drink, “Oof…that’s actually better than I thought it would be.”
“Oh. So that’s why Hangman asked me to give you this.” Callie pulled a small red and white gift bag from the bar stool beside her and slid it your way. “He said to tell you not to open it until tomorrow though.”
“Ugh! But I want to open it now!”
“He said, and I quote: ‘One a day Dewey, that’s the rule. Be a good girl and follow the rules.’” Callie made a face like she wanted to vomit. “I don’t kink shame, but I did not need to know that.”
You’re not sure how long you laughed after that.
Tumblr media
The next day, Callie came to visit you at the library.
“So, what was in the bag?” she asked. “Wait. After that message, I’m not sure I want to know.” You gave a small laugh as you placed two small spray bottles on your desk.
“He got me hand sanitizer spray in Twisted Peppermint from Bath & Body Works. One for the office and one to carry in my bag.”
“Can I have some?”
“Sure!” You give her a couple sprays and she rubbed her hands together.
“This smells awesome. Like I’d dipped my hands in Christmas or something.”
Tumblr media
While he was gone, Jake had cookies from Tiff’s Treats (a dozen minty chocolate) delivered, a box of only peppermint chocolates from Copper Coast Confections, a new red and white striped apron from Hedley & Bennett with your name embroidered on the front. After watching Next Level Chef a few months ago, you’d expressed to him how you wanted an apron from H&B one day and that it might take you a while because they were pretty expensive. You couldn’t believe he’d remembered. After that, when you invited Callie and Penny over and the three of you would cook or bake together, you smiled big as you sported your new apron.
Tumblr media
Finally, the day Jake and the rest of the Daggers were due home arrived. They weren’t due until late afternoon, so you changed in your office at the library. You wore your candy cane earrings, striped Santa hat, bright red lipstick with peppermint gloss, and made sure your new manicure (candy cane themed of course) shone brightly.
You stood with Penny and the other families that waited for their sailors. You hugged Bob and Phoenix when they walked over to you guys and when Reuben and your brother arrived, they both gave you a big wet kiss on either cheek. Distracted as you were wiping your cheeks off while laughing, you didn’t see or hear Jake approaching.
“What are you doin’ givin’ my girl kisses, Payback?”
“JAKE!” You whirled around with a scream.
“Hey sweetheart.” You practically jumped into his arms and pulled his face to yours (thank goodness for long lasting liquid lipsticks!). Jake took it a step further and dipped you backwards while still kissing you…like that sailor kissing a nurse in New York City on VJ Day in 1945.
“What am I?” you heard Mickey ask. “Chopped liver?”
Tumblr media
Later that night, you were in bed reading while Jake finished his shower. You could smell the shower gel he used because it was one he’d gotten you while he was gone (a delicious pepperminty scent from LUSH), and he finally emerged from the bathroom in a peppermint scented cloud.
“Boy, am I happy to be home.”
“I’m glad you’re home too, Jake.” You pecked him on the lips when he leaned down over you. “I missed you and even though I loved absolutely everything you got me--especially the candy cane themed flower bouquet--none of it replaces having you here with me.”
“You sap.”
“Shut up. You love how sappy I am.”
“True.” He put on his sleep pants and got in bed next to you. “Do you want today’s present?”
“I thought you were today’s present?”
“I’m just the bonus”, he said with his traditional Jake Seresin smile (it was your favorite of his smiles).
“Then gimme!” You put your book down and made grabby hands at him.
“Here you go m’darlin.” He handed you a small box with a red and white bow on it.
“Jake. Jake. This isn’t…?”
“No, it isn’t. I wouldn’t do that without Mickey being present.”
“Oh okay. It’s not that I don’t want to…”
“Baby, don’t worry, I understand.”
“I love you.”
“I know.” He winked at you and you couldn’t help but roll your eyes.
“Nerd.” You turn back to the small box and open it. Inside was a necklace with a small ruby and diamond encrusted candy cane on it. “Holy shit.”
“I take it that means you like it.”
“I love it Jake.” You settle onto his lap and kiss him. When you pull apart, he takes the necklace from the box and moves to put it on you. “Thanks cowboy. I think this is going to beat one of my gifts to you for sure.”
“Oh? Do tell.” You hop off his lap and run into your closet. A few minutes later, you emerge wearing your new candy cane themed robe and your necklace.
“I wanted to put on my necklace and see what you think about how it looks.”
“Let’s see it.” Jake’s jaw drops comically when you throw off your robe, because standing in front of him is you. In your necklace.
Just your necklace.
“Merry Christmas Lieutenant.”

What are you doing to me?
Pairing: Jake Seresin x Latina!reader
Summary: Since the first moment Jake laid eyes on you, you had his attention. Little did he know that you were going to change in every possible way he didn't see coming.
A/n: If you guys like this idea, I might even turns it into a series and add more into to fill in some blanks. I hope you guys do enjoy this!
Tumblr media
Maybe it was the way you spat fire when you argued. Or how you defend yourself from a man double your size and weight, but you had Jake amused and intrigued. "Go suck a fucking dick, pinché puto feo! (fucking ugly bitch)" You glared at the man, who didn't seem to get that you weren't interested. He was about to step in when he noticed Rooster moving behind you. A hand was placed on your shoulder as he held you back from attacking the man.
"The lady doesn't seem interested." Rooster stood tall behind you, ensuring he had a good hold on you. "I'm gonna advise that you turn and leave before things get ugly." He nodded at him, and the man, red with anger, left. Once he was gone, Rooster whispered something to the firecracker, who just shrugged the man off her. A smile danced on her lips as she playfully punched his arm. Whatever they were talking about, Jake couldn't hear, with everyone now talking again and the music playing.
And that was how it began. The interest Jake grew in you.
After that night, he knew he had to get to know you.
________
Bradley, aka Rooster, was someone you considered family. When you moved away from the family that cut their ties with you at a young age, you somehow ended up rooming with Bradley at 19. While he was only a couple of years older than you, you both had hit it off well. He had no one after losing his mother, leaving you two closer. A friendship that soon blossomed into a relationship of siblings. "Go away." You pushed Bradley, who now had his arm around your shoulders. He smiled down at you, amused with your lazy attempts to push him.
"You know you love me." He said over the music playing in the background. This earned a laugh that left your lips as you shook him off of you. "You'd be lost without me, Y/n." You rolled your eyes at him as you sat on the hood of his truck. You didn't know how you allowed this man to convince you to come out this Friday night, but here you were. Once again, at the bar where you almost wished you had knocked down that ugly piece of shit of a man.
Almost.
"Actually, I'd be at the apartment." You shrugged as you swung your feet back and forth. "I'd be in my cozy bed watching Criminal Minds." This time, he was the one to roll his eyes at you. Unlike Bradley, you didn't mind not going out that much. You'd be home watching a good movie or show and curled up in bed. He'll, even reading a good book was enough for you. However, that didn't mean you didn't enjoy yourself when you were out.
"You've already watched every episode of that show." He pointed out, and he wasn't wrong. You had watched all of Criminal Minds, but you loved that show too dearly not to rewatch it.
"Y? (And)" You raised an eyebrow, not seeing the issue.
"Now, if it ain't Rooster." A new voice stopped Bradley before he could respond. You glanced over your shoulder and spotted an attractive man walking towards us. He looked to be about six foot and close to Bradley's age. Your eyes took in the white shirt that seemed to fit snugly around his arms but left space around his torso and the jeans that seemed to fit him well. As your eyes traveled back up to his face, you noticed he was already looking at you. You had to fight the urge to look away, embarrassed you were caught checking him out.
"Hangman." Bradley nodded at him, but you could hear the slight annoyance in his voice. The man didn't look away from you as a cocky smile pulled at his lips. His green eyes traveled down your figure, taking in your jeans and the tight red shirt with a low v cut. Enough to show a good amount of cleavage before he looked back at you.
"Jake," He held a hand out. "Jake Seresin." He introduced himself. Bringing your bottom lip between your teeth, you hesitated before taking his hand. You could feel the roughness from the palm of his hand.
"Y/n Dominquez." You smiled at him and watched as he muttered your name. "Encantada. (nice to meet you)"
"Hangman, Rooster!" A new voice called from within the bar. Reluctantly, you looked away and noticed a few dagger members waving for them. Letting go of his hand, you turned back to Bradley and gave him a slight nudge with your foot so you could hop off the truck. He held his hand out, which you pushed away. You didn't have to look to know that Jake, or Hangman as the rest seemed to call him, had begun to walk into the bar. Bradley lingered behind, waiting for you.
"This is where I tell you, don't let that face trick you." You glanced over at him. "He'll break your heart." You let out an amused snort before pushing him forward.
"Roger that." A little salute in the process before you guys joined the rest of his group. Jake was on your mind the whole time, as you didn't shy away from checking him out when he wasn't looking. Even if you were on the other side of the bar, ordering drinks with Phoenix, your eyes somehow always landed back on him.
And that was the first night you both had been introduced to each other.
________
It has been about five months since Bradley introduced you to the rest of his group. Five months since you had also met Jake. "You're going to force me to go alone?" Phoenix asked as she was dressed up. A beautiful, tight-fitting, black dress. Her hair was down and with soft, loose curls. Her makeup was done beautifully.
"I don't see why I have to go." You pulled a pillow to your lap. "Besides, you have the rest of the daggers; you won't be alone." She gave me a deadpan look.
"I'd be the only girl surrounded by idiots." She pointed out, and you smiled, knowing she made a valid point. "Please, besides, Jake is gonna be there." Your grip around the pillow tightened as you fought the urge to smile. Even though you were told how much of an arrogant, egotistical asshole Jake was, you had somehow grown to like him more than you planned. Maybe it was how he was still a gentleman or the playful flirting he constantly threw your way, but this man did something to you.
"Sabes que te odio, (you know I hate you) right?" You glared at the girl before you, regretting the drunk confession four weeks ago. She laughed and pulled out the red dress we had gotten a few weeks back. The moment your eyes landed on the dress, you knew you had to get it. The beautiful red complemented your warm skin tone. It was an off-the-shoulder long-sleeve dress, and the side slit was long; you were worried about how much it would show. You took the dress from her hands and walked into the bathroom. "How much time do I have?" You called out.
"Well," You could hear her move closer. "Bob said the boys must be there in two hours to finish getting ready. So I say about an hour." You looked at your hair through the mirror and sighed. You weighed your options before you decided to change into the dress. As you ran your fingers down the dress, you shook your head, having to change your underwear as it was showing. As you opened the door, Phoenix smiled as her eyes traveled down your figure.
"I need new underwear." You mumbled as you walked past her, undoing your hair. You opened your underwear drawer and pulled out a red thong, one you knew you could hide so it wouldn't be shown through the slit.
"Damn, Y/n." She smiled at you as you slipped the thong on. Your eyes met hers, and she smirked at you. "You are going to make that man fall for you bad." A small laugh left my lips as I stood up straight. "Let me help you with your makeup." She pulled out the makeup back in the bathrooms as you sat down.
_____
The wedding was beautiful. You couldn't be more than happy for Bob and his wife. Your eyes stayed on the newly married couple that danced in the middle of the dance floor. You downed the shot of tequila that Nat had gotten you before Bradley dragged her onto the dance floor. You hummed to yourself and swayed to the music. "Now, why is my firecracker alone?" You could feel how close he was to you as his lips brushed against your ear. His hand rested on the small part of your back as he rubbed his thumb soothingly. You moved back a bit, your head touching his shoulder.
"Just taking in the happy couple." You motioned to where Bob whispered something to his wife, who just laughed. Jake just hummed and moved a chair to sit behind you. You could feel the pull on your chair as he brought you closer to him.
"Never thought Bob would be the first to settle," Jake said, and you turned your head to glance at him. His gaze was already on you as you raised an eyebrow at him.
"Why?" You smiled with a slight tilt in your head. "Bob is a charming man. His wife is lucky to have him." Jake gave you a shrug.
"Not the first thing I imagined for him when we met." He grabbed your hand close to him and messed with it as he continued, "He's a taciturn man. Keeps mostly to himself, and half the time, you forget he's even there." You gave him a slight hum as you knew he had a point. Your first impression of Bob was that he reminded you of an innocent little kid. A puppy, even with his eyes always looking slightly confused and lost.
"Well, I guess he surprised you all then." Jake let out a soft laugh that seemed to warm a spot deep in your belly, loving the sound of it.
"Dance with me." He got up and walked before you; his hand never left yours. A soft okay left your lips as he helped you up. You didn't miss how his beautiful green eyes trailed down your figure. Or the way they deemed to darken when he took in the tattoo exposed from your slit. You pulled him to the dance floor, where there was an open spot with few people around. Jake wasted no time pulling you close as his hands reached your waist. Your hands around his shoulders as you sway to the music. "You look stunning." You looked up at him as he pulled you closer to him.
"You don't look too bad yourself." You played with hair, lightly running your nails against his scalp. His eyes fluttered shut as he suppressed a groan from leaving his lips. Having you this close to him, he could feel everything. The way your boobs pressed up against him or his hands were inches away from being able to slide his hand down to your ass. Hell, if he wanted to, he could move his hand close to the slit and touch the exposed skin that seemed to taunt him. Touch the black ink that painted your beautiful skin. He couldn't help the frown that pulled at the corner of his lips. "Jake, estás bien (are you okay)?" Jake opened his eyes to look at you as you looked worried. "Are you okay?" You asked once again as you moved a hand to cup his cheek. Your eyes scanned his face, and he just nodded.
"Yeah," He took a deep breath. He could take in your scent. The sweetness filled his nose, along with a jasmine and maybe a hint of vanilla. But with it all, her scent was the prominent scent that drove him crazy. "Yeah, I'm fine, firecracker." The nickname he gave you left his lips as you rubbed his cheek with your thumb. He looked down at you, and every part holding him back vanished. The gap between you closed as he brought his lips down to yours. At first, you were taken off guard by his action, but you kissed him back. Your arms wrapped around him as you pulled him closer and smiled into the kiss. He felt you slightly open your mouth and wasted no time to allow his tongue to explore your mouth. He explored it all and moved a hand up your neck, deepening the kiss. A groan left his lips as you tasted better than he ever imagined. When you pulled back from the kiss, he couldn't help but give you a lazy smile as he gripped your waist tighter.
"Wow," Jake's heart swelled when a giggle left your lips.
"What are you doing to me, firecracker?" He groaned as he placed his forehead against yours. "You got me going crazy for you and your fiery attitude."

It's a Nice Year For a...White Wedding-Pt.1 (J.Seresin)
Tumblr media
Pairing: Jake Seresin x female reader, Jake Seresin x Garcia!reader, Jake Seresin x latina!reader, Jake Seresin x plus size!reader
Word Count: 2624
A/N: Written for @roosterforme's 80's Rocktober Playlist Challenge. As you can tell by the title, I chose Billy Idol's "White Wedding". I'm late in posting, I know, but life decided to smack me across the face and steal my inspiration. That is why I'm breaking up the story into two parts. I felt it was better to get something out now (that was good), rather than nothing for a long time. I want to thank my betas, @jobean12-blog & @buckysdollforlife, for looking over what I have and reassuring me that it was indeed flowing perfectly fine.
Triggers: fatphobic moments (but it doesn't go into super detail).

Engagement-Spring
“Dew, trust me, I know EXACTLY where to go on our honeymoon”, Jake declared one day a month after y’all’s engagement.
“Oh?”  You looked at him with an inquiring eyebrow from your place at your desk.
“Yeah darlin’.  You’re going to love it.”
“And what is this honeymoon I’m going to love?”
“Can’t tell ya.  It’s a surprise.”  You pouted as he walked around your desk and leaned on the arms of your office chair, scooting his face closer and closer to yours.
“Not even a little hint?” you asked, batting your eyelashes at him and sticking your bottom lip out even more.  Jake smiled that big Jake Seresin smile of his and he leaned into the kiss.
“Nope.  Not even a little one.”  He stood up and smiled at you again, “I’ll see you later Dew.  Love you!”
“Love you too Hangman!” you called as he jogged out of your office.
Tumblr media
“We need to choose a date Jake.”  Your fiancé launched a dart at the board and turned to you.  The two of you were having a fun night out with the rest of the Daggers at the Hard Deck.
“I agree m’dear.  Any ideas?”  He picked up his bottle of Shiner Bock and took a drink.
“I’d like sometime in October”, you countered from your seat on a bar stool near him.  “How about you?”
“I was going to suggest a date in October too, actually.”  He walked up and stood himself between your spread knees.
“Oh really?” you replied coyly.
“Yeah.”  He grinned and leaned into a kiss.  One of your hands slid from where you gripped him on his waist to the back pocket of his jeans.
“OH MY GOD.  Hermanita!  Can you not?!  I’m trying to eat mozzarella sticks here!”  You smiled in the kiss and lifted a hand towards Mickey, and flipped him the bird.
“Shut up Fanboy.  Let your sister be gross with Hangman”, you heard Rooster say to your brother…followed by a smack.  You wondered (as Jake continued to kiss you) who hit your brother upside the head.
“Phoenix!”
“Rooster’s right, let her be”, you heard your friend say.  “But if this starts turning into what I almost saw in her office last week, I’m throwing a pitcher of water at them.”
Your head jerked quickly to the right and you narrowed your eyes at Phoenix, acutely aware that Jake’s lips were now moving against your neck.
“I thought I told you not to mention that.”  She simply shrugged her shoulders at you.  Mickey turned to look at you with a horrified look on his face.
“In your office?!  I visit you there!”
“Oh, relax Fanboy.”  Jake had finally pulled himself away from your neck.  “Just wait ‘til it’s your turn.”
“Never”, your brother said with a huff, and went back to angrily dipping his mozzarella sticks in the marinara sauce.
“Anyways”, Jake said as he looked back at you, “I talked to my mama the other day and she invited us down in a couple weeks to throw us an engagement party.”
“Really?”
“Yup.”  Jake looked up at the rest of the squad, “And all of y’all are invited too, obviously.”
“Aw yeah!  I’ve missed Mama Seresin”, said Javy.  Suddenly, his eyes got big and he smiled like you hadn’t really seen before.  “Is she going to make her banana pudding?”
“She wanted me to tell you that she’s going to have some Tupperware with some for you at the airport.”  Javy let out a whoop in excitement.
“So”, bringing Jake’s attention back to you, “What’s the date you were thinking?”
“If you’re cool with it, how about October 13th?”
“Why that specific day?”
“It’s Navy’s birthday.”  You gave your fiancé a big smile.
“You nerd.”  You gave him a big kiss, ignoring an annoyed groan from Mickey.  “I love it.”

Venue, Wedding Party, and Dress -Summer
You looked up from your latest romance novel to watch your found family going at it in another rousing edition of Dogfight Football.  Rooster pulled back and launched the ball towards Jake, who caught it.  You jumped up to cheer.
“YEAH!  THAT’S MY MAN!!!” you yelled.  “YEAH BAY-BEE!”  Jake gave a little bow in your direction and blew you a kiss (you spied Rooster and Mickey pretending to throw up behind him and started laughing).  A few minutes later, Mav called time and everyone dispersed to their towels.
You dropped into your camp chair, a gift from Jake so you’d be comfortable anytime you came down to the beach with him and the squad…or even just on your own.  The best part about it wasn’t even an original part: your wonderful fiancé had noticed the book sleeve you carried around sometimes and got one custom made to attach to your chair.  You thanked him thoroughly.
Jake plopped down in his own chair next to you and opened a bottle of water to hydrate.
“Whatcha readin’?”
“Mickey bought me the physical copies of Catharina Maura’s books I was missing from my shelf, so I’ve decided to re-read them.  I’m starting with my favorite, Forever After All.”
After a while, everyone made their way over to the Hard Deck’s outside seating to have a group lunch.  Phoenix decided to bring up the latest wedding topic.
“So, have you two decided on a venue?”  You and Jake shook your heads.
“First we thought of having it on my parent’s ranch in Texas, but most of the guest list lives out here.  So now we’re looking into finding somewhere here.”
“Do you have an idea of what you’d like?” asked Mav.
“I want something outside”, you responded.  “That was the original idea for the ranch.”  Mav looked at Penny and shrugged at her.
“How about a beach ceremony?” Penny suggested.  You whipped your head around to Jake.
“My girl’s smilin’ big already.  I think you hit the nail on the head there, Penny.”
“Why don’t you have it out here?  Afterwards, we can do the reception inside”, she added.  “Before you say no, that you don’t want to put me out or something else like that, let me just say we have plenty of space and I’d love to be able to be part of your day like this.”
Jake simply looked at you with a big smile on his face.
“It’s perfect darlin’.  After all, this is where we first met.”
Tumblr media
You and Jake decided you wanted to include your found family as much as your actual families in the ceremony.  You more so than him, since the only blood relative you had (and still spoke to) was Mickey.
Jake suggested asking Isla and Jesse if they wanted to be part of the wedding party, so you did a FaceTime call with them.
“HI AUNTIE DEW!”
“Hey my beautiful girls!  How are you?  What are we reading?”  Jesse proceeded to tell you about how she had just started reading the Babysitters Club series and you got pretty excited since it was one of your favorite series’ growing up.  You promised to show her your original copies of the entire series the next time she came to visit.  Isla then started to tell you about the latest picture book she read, Dragons Love Tacos.
“It’s so funny and I love tacos too!  We have the best tacos!” cried Isla.
“Yes we do”, Jake added.  “So, Jesse.  Isla.  Auntie Dew and I are calling because we wanted to ask you if you wanted to be in the wedding.”
You knew Jake had a higher tolerance for loud sounds because he spent his time in jets, but you spent your time in a quiet environment, so when the most ear piercing shriek you’d heard up until that point emanated from your iPad, you assumed you were now deaf.  When your hearing returned, Jake was calming the girls.
“Hey, y’all need to use inside voices, okay?  Don’t want us going deaf, do ya?”
“No Uncle Jake.  Sorry Auntie Dew.”
“It’s no problem girls”, you replied, wiggling your finger around in your ear.
“Can I be a bridesmaid?” asked Jesse.
“Of course my darling!  Once I choose the colors, I’ll let your mama know so you can go dress shopping, okay?”
“Yes ma’am!”  You could both hear Lauren (who was behind the camera) promising Jesse they’d go shopping as soon as you let them know.
“Isla, since your sister wants to be a bridesmaid, I have a special job for you”, you said with a big smile.
“Really Auntie Dew?  What’s my job?”
“I’d like you to help Uncle Mouse and I make it down the aisle to your Uncle Jake.”  You smiled big at Isla’s nickname for your brother, because she was absolutely convinced he was the Disney character thanks to his first name (even if it was technically Miguel).  “Would you like to be our Flower Girl?”
You swore you were going to be deaf if you kept surprising these little girls with anything else throughout their lives.
Tumblr media
Once you had Jesse and Isla’s roles set,  you went about putting together the rest of the wedding party.  Because your wedding wasn’t some big blow out affair, the both of you decided on having just one attendant each (besides Jesse and Isla).  Jake obviously chose Javy as his Best Man and you decided on Bob as your Man of Honor, the two of you becoming even better friends since his and Jake’s accidents last year.  Another obvious choice was that your brother would be escorting you down the aisle.
The two of you still wanted to include the rest of your friends somehow and it finally came to you one night while you were wasting time on TikTok.  You showed Jake the video and when he finally stopped laughing, he agreed to your proposition.
“Phoenix, Payback, and Rooster are going to LOVE that.”
Tumblr media
The next item on your To-Do List was the most difficult one: dress shopping.  Going shopping for any kind of clothes, let alone a wedding dress, was difficult…especially for a bigger girl.  Jake helped you to learn to love yourself more every single day, but the first couple of trips to bridal salons managed to beat the extra love you’d gained right out of you.  Really, it was your fault because you’d gone on the first couple of appointments alone.  At the first salon, you wandered the shop for almost 15 minutes before any of the salespeople came to ask if you needed help, and when the woman did, she looked at you with a look that basically said What is someone like you doing here?  It was sad, because it was the shop you’d dreamt about going to as a little girl when you were thinking of your dream wedding.  You didn’t tell anyone what had happened that time or the other times.
It wasn’t until you were having an impromptu Girl’s Night with Phoenix while out at the Hard Deck that the topic of your dress came up.
“So Dew, you find a dress yet?”
“Uh no, Phe, I haven’t.”  You took a sad sip from your Pina Colada.  Penny walked up and leaned on the counter in front of you just then and you avoided looking at her or Phoenix so they would see your disappointment.
“Why not?  You need to get a move on!  Altering the dresses takes time you know”, Penny interjected.
“I know!  I know it takes time!”  You had tried keeping the emotions in, but you couldn’t.
“You okay?” questioned Phoenix.
“No!  I’m not okay!  My wedding to the most gorgeous man ever is in a handful of months and I have no dress because every salon I’ve been to up until now has nothing for girls like me or they basically refused to help with a whole ‘We don’t serve your kind here.’ ‘tude!  Like, what is this?!  Mos Eisley and I’m a droid trying to get into the cantina?!  It’s a wonder Jake wants to marry me!”  You ran off before either woman could recover from your outburst.
You were woken up the next day when someone jumped on you.
“What the f--”
“Time to get up, sleepy head!”  You cracked your eyes open to see Phoenix, Penny, Bob, and your brother all staring at you.
“What in the ever lovin’ hell are y’all doin’ here?”
“Well, hermanita, we’re here to help you dress shop.”
“Huh?”
“Phoenix and I told these two over here about what you said to us yesterday”, added Penny.  “A friend of mine owns a shop that is miles better than the places you’ve been to already.”
“So we’re stealing you away today while Jake, Rooster, Coyote, and Payback look for suits”, added Bob.
“So get out of bed, get dressed, and let’s go shopping!” Phoenix cried.  She and Penny shooed the boys out and waited with them in the living room while you cleaned up and got dressed.
An hour later, the five of you stepped foot into Wildest Dreams Bridal Boutique…and the place really lived up to the name.  Every single dress you saw as you walked in was beyond gorgeous and there were posters of models and mannequins of all sizes.  You were going to find your dress today.
Your party was met by Penny’s friend Kathryn (“Or you can call me Kat, whichever is alright with me!”), who sat you all down on a couch in front of a raised platform and mirror, a la Say Yes to the Dress!.  Shop assistants brought over champagne to your family and friends (with a Coke for Bob) while Kat took you around the shop and asked your preferences (“I definitely need it to have pockets!”) and other questions about the ceremony, like location and time of day.  Once she had what she needed, Kat took you to a changing room where you got into a robe and she returned with several dresses.
You marched out to the couch area where everyone was and showed off each dress.  By the time you had tried on the seventh dress, you were beginning to lose hope you’d find something.  It wasn’t the fit or that the dresses didn’t look good on you, you just hadn’t had the ‘look at yourself in the mirror and immediately begin crying because this was The Dress’ moment yet.
You were sitting dejected in your robe when Kat came back in with two more dresses on the rolling rack.
“I’m confident it’s going to be one of these two”, she adds with a smile.  “Let’s get you dressed.”
The first dress was gorgeous, and you felt it. Phoenix, Penny, Bob, and Mickey all loved that dress.  Penny was all for that first dress…and you almost said yes.  There was just something missing.
When Kat unzipped and held open the second dress and you stepped into it, you shuddered (in a good way).  Kat watched your reflection in the dressing mirror and stood back in a thoughtful pose.
“There’s still a little something missing.”  She thought for a minute and then suddenly snapped her fingers.  “I know!”
Kat left and came back quickly with some veils.  She quickly put your hair up into a low bun and then pinned the veil in.  Kat moved behind you and picked up the train to walk you out to your family.
When Mickey saw you, his eyes began to glass over with tears.  Bob just sat dumbfounded, mouth hanging open.  Penny and Phoenix had big smiles on their faces.  You stepped up onto the platform and Kat fluffed out the train.
Not a single one of them said a word, because they all knew what you did: this was The Dress you would marry the man of your dreams in.

A/N: Written for @jupitercomet's 12 Days of Christmas Challenge. I had Day 1-Secret Santa. This is also my first Top Gun Maverick fic, so go easy on me! I want to thank the wonderful and amazing @jobean12-blog for letting me bounce ideas off of her and helping me break through my writer's block. Also, many, many thanks to @navybrat817, for her firsthand knowledge of Navy life and for answering my countless questions. You two rock!
Triggers: Death of parents (just mentioned, no specifics), negative talk about self, body image issues. Angst with a happy ending.

You were content with the quiet life you led.  Working as a librarian on a US Navy installation allowed you that freedom.  NAS Miramar wasn’t small, but it wasn’t huge either.  When you worked in the public library system, you were busy quite often…and it was starting to wreak havoc on your mental health.  Luckily, around the time you were trying to decide what to do with your career, your brother, Mickey ‘Fanboy’ Garcia, called you to let you know he was going to be stationed at NAS Miramar for the foreseeable future to be part of the now permanent Dagger Squad.
So, you moved to San Diego and onto the installation with Mickey, leaving your hometown behind (it didn’t really bother you to leave because your parents had been gone for several years and your introverted nature didn’t grant you close friends).  He helped you get the job at the library and that was that.
The day you finished unpacking your things, Mickey told you he was going to take you out to meet the rest of the squad because the only person you knew was Reuben and you needed to meet some new people in your new home:
Tumblr media
“Are you sure that’s okay?  I don’t want to invade your group or anyth--"
“Sis…really?  This night is for you!  I’ve told them all about you and how excited I am to have you with me again.”  You smiled big and giggled.
“Aw, you’re such a sweetheart, aren’t ya little bro?”
“Shut up”, pouted Mickey.  You grabbed his hand and pulled him to you.
“Thanks.  Te quiero, hermanito.”
“I love you too.”
Tumblr media
When you and Mickey arrived at the local watering hole, The Hard Deck, you were instantly greeted by Reuben.  He pulled you into a tight hug, calling you Little Garcia (which was a ridiculous nickname, seeing as how you were older than Mickey by a year).  Shortly after that, Bob, Rooster, Phoenix, and Coyote showed up.  You were all sitting around one of the pool tables, drinking beers (in your case, it was an ice cold Dr. Pepper because you weren’t big on drinking) when you heard the most suave and cocky sounding, Texas accent ever:
“What do we have here?”  You saw Phoenix roll her eyes and smile.
“Little Garcia, this here is Bagman.”
“Hangman.”
“Whatever.”  Hangman laughed and pulled Phoenix into a hug.  When she let him go, he turned to look at you.
“So, you’re Fanboy’s sister.”  You nodded.
“Y-yes.  That’d, uh, that’d be me.”
“Well m’dear, we’re all really happy that Fanboy has you close by again.”
“I’m glad to be here Hangman.”  He smiles big and sits on the barstool next to you.
“Please, call me Jake.”
“Okay, Jake.”  If this man keeps looking at you with those gorgeous green eyes, you were going to melt.
“So, tell me Little Garcia, what do you do?”
“I’m a librarian.  I’m going to be working on base and living with Mickey”, you replied.  “Since I was moving down here, he managed to get out of the barracks and into a small house on base.”  Jake clapped his hands together and looked around at the group.
“You’re going to be living on the base?  That means you deserve your own callsign!”  The rest of the squad voiced their agreement.  “The question is, what do we call you?”
“How about Libby?” suggested Bob.  He made a face when everyone groaned.  “I know, I know.”  A few of the others made their own suggestions of library related callsigns before Jake stood from his spot next to you.
“I’ve got it!”  Jake turned back to you with a huge smile on his face, “How about…Dewey?”
You felt heat crawling up your neck because of the way he was looking at you, like you were the only woman in the room.  You knew that that wasn’t possible, that someone as good looking and amazingly talented and a hero like Jake would never look at someone like you that way.  Why would a man who looked like he was crafted by Zeus himself look at a chubby librarian twice, when he could have women like Phoenix, or your cousin Isabella (who stole the first boy you ever really had a chance with, away)?
“I like it.  Thanks, Jake.”  He pulled you into a hug, squeezing you tight.
Oh Lord.  You were in trouble.
Tumblr media
That was a year ago.  Over the last year, it was like you became an honorary member of the Dagger Squad.  They became the family you and Mickey were missing.  Most of them came to visit you at work.  One of those people was Jake.  The first time he came by, a month after the two of you met, you were shelving books and he’d snuck up on you, giving you a moment worthy of fan fiction itself.
Tumblr media
You stepped up onto the plastic footstool and filed the book in its spot, on the topmost shelf.  You had an earbud in and were singing quietly along to “Remember Me” from Coco since you very rarely ever got someone in the library this early in the day, which meant you didn’t hear the door open, and you didn’t hear footsteps coming towards you.  You felt something tap you on the shoulder and you let out a scream, feeling yourself tilt backwards.  You squeezed your eyes shut and braced yourself for the inevitable pain, but it never came.  Instead, you felt the warm embrace of familiar arms.
“You can open your eyes now, darlin’.”  Opening one eye, you saw Jake smiling at you.  “Sorry I scared you, Dewey.”
“Oh, it’s not a problem.  I should’ve been paying more attention and–” It was then that you realized Jake was holding you bridal style.  “Oh my God!  Jake!  Put me down!  You’re going to hurt your back or something and I’m going to get in trouble for breaking government property.  I’m way too hea–”
You would’ve rambled on had Jake not stopped you.
“Dewey.  I’m going to need you to relax.  You’re not going to mess up my back and you’re not going to get in trouble.  I have trained a long time and I don’t want to sound like a cocky bastard–”  You gave him a judgmental eyebrow raise and a Look.  “Okay, you have a point.”
“Seriously Jake, I don’t want to hurt you!”  Jake rolled his eyes but put you down carefully.  “Thank you.  I know you work out..I mean look at you, of course you do.  I just-lifting weights and doing bench presses is one thing, Jake…”
“Dewey…”
“Thank you for saving me from getting hurt”, you say before Jake can continue with whatever platitudes someone as good looking, built, and thin as him can come up with.  You smooth out the skirt of your bright red button front chiffon dress and look up at him since he has at least half a foot on you.  “Is there something I can help you find today, Lt. Seresin?”
Jake’s jaw clenched and you could tell he wanted to say more.  What you couldn’t figure out was why he seemed to care this much about how you thought of yourself.  He was just a friend.
“Uh, no…no.”  He ran a hand through his light brown hair.  “My sister is coming to visit next week with my nieces for Family Weekend.  Are y’all doing anything special?”
“Of course!”  You gave him a big smile and proceeded to run through the activities that were planned.
Tumblr media
The following week, you got to meet Jesse and Isla Seresin.  The bonus was getting to see ‘Uncle Jake’ in action first hand and you hated it because every minute you spent in his presence was making you fall in love with him.  This was something you didn’t want because you knew you couldn’t afford a broken heart.  Not again.  You’d only recently been able to put your heart back together finally coming to term with the loss of your parents.  You weren’t going to let a crush derail that progress.
Tumblr media
Over the next 10 months, Jake visited you at the base library often, acting like that first conversation between you two never happened.  You’d ask after Isla and Jesse, how school was going and when they’d be back to visit again.  Jake would even bring you gifts from the girls for their ‘favorite librarian’ when he’d come back from visiting them.
Sometimes Jake would come to the library because he needed to research something for a mission or because he needed to develop some sort of lesson plan now that he was an instructor at TOPGUN.  Sometimes he’d come by just to chat.  During those chats, you found yourself opening up to him.  One day in October, almost a year after you moved to San Diego, Jake and some of the squad were at the library helping with the Halloween Festival for the kids the library staff was throwing in the parking lot.  You and Jake were manning the ‘Balloon Dart’ booth, chatting away the time while waiting for some new challengers.
“You know Dewey, in all the time I’ve known you, I don’t think I’ve ever asked you what your favorite book is”, said Jake.
“Is this you asking?”
“Mmhmm.”
“Pride & Prejudice”, you replied, keeping your eyes on your feet.  “I know, you don’t have to say it.  It’s totally cliché.”
“It’s not cliché at all.  It’s a good book.”  You looked up at Jake’s comment.
“You like Pride & Prejudice?”
“Your Lizzie Bennett is showing, you know.”
“Sorry.”
“No worries.  I read it for school, and I just really liked it”, said Jake.  “So, why is it your favorite?”
“It’s one of the first books my mom and I read together”, you replied.  Smiling sadly, you continue.  “She’d read me a chapter a night.  It took a while, but we finally finished it.  Afterwards, we borrowed the six-disc BBC mini-series from our local library and watched it all in one day.  Colin Firth was so handsome and a perfect Mr. Darcy.  Then in 2005, she surprised me with tickets to the movie as a late birthday gift and I just adored Matthew MacFadyen’s version of Darcy.  It fed my love of reading, which then inspired my choice in career.  Before they died, mom and I had been looking for the ‘Peacock edition’ of the book that was released in 1894.  It’s one of the most valuable and gorgeous versions because of the cover and illustrations by Hugh Thomson.  I had almost tracked one down, but then…”
You looked away, not wanting to let Jake see you cry, but were unsuccessful.  Jake reached over and tipped your face up so he could look you in the eye, and wrapped his free hand around your ample waist, pulling you closer.
“I’m sorry about your parents.  It can’t have been easy for you and Fanboy.”  He placed the hand he’d had under your chin on your cheek and wiped away the few tears that escaped.
“It wasn’t.  He hides it better than I do, but he was just as broken.  It’s why I’m so thankful for Reuben and the rest of you.  When I couldn’t be there for him, all of you were…so, thank you, Jake.”
The way he was looking at you made you weak in the knees, and you saw him leaning towards you.  Was Jake Seresin about to kiss you?  Unfortunately, you wouldn’t find out because as he got closer, one of the kids ran up to the booth and you two jumped apart.
You watched him closely, out of the corner of your eye, the rest of the night.  You made sure you were always busy with the kids or whatever else was needed at the booth so that you weren’t available to talk with Jake.  You could tell he wanted to say something about what happened, but you really didn’t want to deal with the rejection and the explanation that it was a mistake.
As Jake was explaining the rules to one of the kids, you saw her mother fluffing her hair and adjusting her ‘assets’.  She put on the biggest (fakest) smile she could when Jake turned his attention to her. You rolled your eyes as you eyeballed the diamond on her left hand.  Did she think that he would just ignore that she was married and fall into her bed?  You knew Jake was imperfect, but he would never stoop that low.
You loved him.  You knew that now, because you gave up on trying to not fall in love with him months ago.  You hoped it wasn’t obvious because you didn’t want to be that chubby girl who was in love with the hot guy and acted like a stalker.  Becoming that stereotype was not going to happen.
Tumblr media
Over the next month, you did absolutely everything in your power to avoid Jake Seresin.  You changed your shifts at work as much as you could so you wouldn’t be there when you knew he had free time and if he came in when you were there, you made sure you were busy or your coworkers would take care of him for you.  You didn’t go out to the Hard Deck on the weekends or anytime you knew he’d be there.
The week before Thanksgiving, you were at work when you received a visitor.
“Dewey?”  You looked up from your work to see Phoenix in the doorway of your office.
“Hey Phe!  Come on in.”  She stepped into your office and took a seat across from you.  “So, what brings you by?”
“We’ve missed you”, she said.  “All of us.”  The underlying meaning in her words didn’t skate past your understanding.
“I-I just can’t Phe.  I won’t be able to get over him if I’m around him constantly.  And I have to get over him because when he eventually finds someone–”
“Dewey, he doesn’t want to find anyone else.”
“Nat, I’m going to explain something to you, okay?”  You took a deep breath and continued, “Men as good looking as Jake or Rooster or any of them don’t go for women like me.  I know I’m not ugly, I never said that, but I am fat.  It’s just a fact.  Someone who takes care of himself like Jake is expected to be with a woman who looks like you.  Like the high school trope, the quarterback and the cheerleader.  I’m just the nerd who helps tutor the quarterback.  Who, like an idiot, falls for him and thinks that because he was so nice to me, maybe I should tell him how I feel.  When I do, he goes and laughs about it with his cheerleader girlfriend and all the other jocks.
I reached too far Nat.  Like I said, I need to get over him because I need to be able to be around him when he finds his cheerleader.”
Phoenix huffed.
“I didn’t know you felt like this.”
“I’ve been dealing with this since I was a kid.  I was compared to my cousin and how she looked.”
“Why didn’t you come talk to me?”  Phoenix leaned forward and took your hand.
“Phe, you’ve got enough on your plate, enough to deal with”, you reply.  “Besides, you’re not my therapist.  I didn’t want to burden you with my problems.  I’m already enough of a burden to Mickey.  I’m his older sister and he thinks he has to take care of me.”
“Can I say something now?” she asked, and you nodded.  “You are not a burden.  Not to me, not to Jake, and especially not to Fanboy.  He’s your brother and he loves you.  Before you moved here, he may have smiled and joked around, but it never really meant much.  He was just okay.  After you let him know you were coming to San Diego, you should’ve seen how happy he was.  His smile was huge, and his eyes didn’t look empty.  You’ve made all of our lives better.”
By the time she finished, tears fell silently down your cheeks.
“Thank you, Phe.  I love you, you know.”
“I love you too, Dewey.”  Phoenix came around the desk and pulled you into a tight hug.  “Believe it or not, this wasn’t the only reason I came to see you.”  You pulled away and wiped your cheeks.
“What can I help you with?”
“Some of us are having a Friendsgiving thing next week.  I wanted to know if you and Fanboy wanted to join us.”
“Um…”
“He’s going to Texas to see his family.”
“Okay then.”
Tumblr media
Friendsgiving with Rooster, Phoenix, Reuben, and Mickey was one of the happiest times you had.  After dinner, Phoenix brought out a small basket with several small pieces of paper.
“What’s this?”  You looked over at your brother with a questioning look.
“Last Christmas, we all decided that a Secret Santa with the squad would be fun.  Since it was a hit, we’re doing it again.”  He took the basket from Phoenix and held it out to you, “It’s your first time, so you get the first draw.  No take backsies, unless you get your own name.”
“Got it.”  You closed your eyes and shoved your hand in the basket, rooting around for a few seconds before finally grabbing a paper.  You unfolded it, shielding the paper from prying eyes.  You smiled at the ‘Bob’ written on the paper.  You were close enough with Bob and knew the perfect gift for him.
“When do we have to have the gifts ready?” you asked the group.
“Penny’s having a Christmas party at The Hard Deck next month on the 15th”, said Rooster.  You felt your stomach drop.  You weren’t making any progress in getting over the feelings you had for Jake, and you didn’t think you were ready to see him again.
“Awesome.  Can’t wait.”  Bob came in for Book Club all the time, so you could slip him his gift then and not have to worry about being at the party.  Everyone would be so busy enjoying it, they probably wouldn’t even notice you weren’t there.  How wrong you were.
Tumblr media
Now.
Sure enough, the day before Penny’s Christmas party, Bob stopped by the library.  He loved his gift; you’d gotten him a cookie decorating class that was online and prerecorded so he wouldn’t miss any of the days because of work and emphasized intricate decorating techniques.
He gave you a kiss on the cheek and a big hug in thanks, promising you the first batch of cookies he made with his newfound knowledge.  Before leaving, he asked if he’d see you the next day at The Hard Deck.  You felt bad about lying but told him no because you had to take care of something important.  In reality, you were going to hide out at the library for a few hours and then go home.
So, you did.  Your phone started going off only a few minutes after everyone was supposed to be arriving at The Hard Deck.  You ignored the texts from Phoenix, Mickey, Bob, and Reuben and were about to shut your phone off when a call from Mickey came through.
“What?”
“Where are you?”
“I’m busy.”
“You’re a bad liar, you know, hermanita.”  You rolled your eyes.
“Is there a reason you’re calling Mickey?”
“Everyone is wondering where you are.”  You could hear voices and the jukebox going in the background; it sounded like a good time.  “And I mean everyone.”
“Mickey…I can’t, okay?  I won’t be a novelty or something he bides his time with until he finds someone better, someone prettier.  Someone thinner and more appropriate for him.”
“That’s complete bullshit.  And Hangman is a lot of things, but that isn’t something he’d ever do.  Please believe me.  When I met him, I thought he was a complete dick.  The only one who didn’t was Coyote, and that’s only because they’ve been friends for years, so he knows how much of a good man Jake is.”
Mickey went on about Jake’s pros and as you were about to cut him off and hang up, you heard another voice.
“Fanboy, who are you talking to?”  Jake.  He’d seen your brother having a heated discussion while on the phone, and since he hadn’t seen you yet, he put two and two together.
“Don’t you say a word Mickey.  Don’t you do it.”
“Um…”
“Fanboy, is it Dewey?  Where is she?”
“I’m under orders to not say anything.”
“Bullshit.  Tell me.  Now.  I need to talk to her.”
“No.”  You knew your brother and you could hear his resolve weakening in his voice.  Suddenly, you heard what sounded like a scuffle on the other end and shouts of Give it back Hangman! before another voice came on the line.
“Dewey?  Dewey, please, tell me where you are.  I need to talk to you.”  You pressed ‘mute’, so he wouldn’t hear you starting to cry.  “Please darlin’.  Tell me where you are.”
You almost broke at the pleading in his voice.  You didn’t understand why he was so determined about seeing you.  You were just friends.  You took a deep breath and unmuted the call.
“I’m sorry Jake, but I’m not going to do that.”
“Darlin’, pl–”
“Goodnight Jake.”  You hung up and put your phone on ‘Do Not Disturb’, so you could listen to music while you did some shifting and didn’t have to worry about phone calls interrupting you.
You were in a Metallica-type of mood, so you chose the correct playlist and put in your earbuds.  ‘All Nightmare Long’ transitioned in to ‘Master of Puppets’ (your favorite song), and you shimmied along the aisles, shifting books around so they weren’t so tightly packed together.
Once again, you were so distracted by your task and the music, you didn’t hear someone knocking on the front door of the building or even walking in.  He heard you, though.  Jake called out for you, but when he didn’t get a response, he went to check your office.  Seeing your things still there, he was dead quiet to find out where you were...until he heard you singing.
‘Come crawling faster (faster)
Obey your master (master)
Your life burns faster (faster)
Obey your master
Master!
Master!’
Jake took the stairs two at a time, finding you in the graphic novel section.  You had your back to him, and he knew you were going to be mad, but he just had to.  Unbeknownst to you, he tiptoed up to you and tapped you on the shoulder.
You let out an almighty shriek and spun around, your feet getting tangled together.  Jake launched himself forward and caught you before you could fall and get hurt.
“You okay Dewey?”  You smacked him on the chest and pushed him away.
“Jake Seresin!  How could you do that to me?!”  You pulled your earbuds out and pocketed them.  You looked over at Jake and were glad to see he was looking slightly ashamed.
“I’m sorry darlin’.”
“What are you doing here Jake?  I wanted to be alone.”
“I needed to see you.”
“Why?  What could you possibly have to say to me right now?  There’s a party with everyone there and yet you’re here, wasting your time with me.”  You crossed your arms and leaned against the shelf.
“First of all, you’re not there, so not everyone is there.”  Jake reached behind him and pulled a wrapped, rectangular something he’d tucked into his back pocket.  “Secondly, I needed to give you this.  I’m your Secret Santa.’
“You could’ve just given it to Mickey to give to me.”
“Dewey, just take it, please.”
“Fine.”  You reached over and took the package from Jake’s hands.  You were carefully unwrapping the gift when Jake spoke up.
“Why have you been avoiding me?”
“I haven’t b–”
“Don’t lie to me.  I may act like an idiot, but I’m not one.  Anytime I go to visit you, either you’re not there because you changed your schedule, or you get one of the others to deal with me.  When we all get together at the Hard Deck, you never show.  Fanboy feeds us whatever lie you tell him, but I know better.  I know you, something happened to make you avoid me and the others.”
“Jake…”  Before you could continue, you pushed the wrapping paper of the gift to reveal a book.  A copy of the ‘Peacock Edition’ of Pride & Prejudice, originally published in 1894, making this a first printing.  You carefully opened the book to look through it.  No creases, the spine was perfect for a book that was almost 130 years old, and it was beautiful.
“Do you like it?”  In your astonishment, you’d forgotten he was standing there.
“Jake, Jake, I-I-I can’t believe you remembered?”
“I did.”  You felt tears starting to form and threatened to fall down your cheeks.
“Jake, I c-can’t accept this. It-It’s too much.”
“It’s not too much darlin’.  I just hope it makes you feel closer to your mom.”  The tears fell in a steady flow now.  Jake rushed forward and took your face in your hands.  “Please don’t cry baby.”
You shut your eyes and basked in the feeling of his hands on your cheeks.
“Why did you do this Jake?  This isn’t something you do for a friend for a Secret Santa gift.”  You hear Jake chuckle.
“Open your eyes darlin’.”  You took a deep breath and slowly opened your eyes to look into green ones.  “You know why, Dewey.”
“I need you to say it.  I won’t believe it unless you do.”
“I love you, Miss Garcia.”
“Jake…”  You gave him a big watery smile.
“I know you have your reservations because of some weird reason that you think you don’t deserve me just because of the way you look.  Baby, that can’t be further from the truth.  I love you because of who you are, of what you’ve overcome, of what you’ve done–”
“I’m just a librarian, Jake.  I’m not anyone special.  But you, you’re a literal hero.  I read, you fly planes and save the world…how could I ever measure up?”
“Darlin’, you’re a hero too, to the girls.  I can never talk with Isla and Jesse without hearing Miss Garcia this and Miss Garcia that and When can we see Miss Garcia again, Uncle Jake?  They were both having trouble with their reading, but after meeting you, they’re the top readers in each of their classes.”
“I–” Before you could say anything else, Jake surged forward and kissed you. You’d only ever been kissed a few times in your life, but this blew the other kisses out of the water, it obliterated them. It reminded you of The Princess Bride, and the thought brought a smile to your face.
When the lack of air finally became an issue, you pulled away and leaned your forehead against Jake’s.
“I love you too, Jake, so much.”
Jake smiled that perfect smile of his and kissed you again. So focused on the kiss, neither of you heard the footsteps up the stairs, and didn’t know Reuben, Mickey, Rooster, Coyote, Phoenix, and Bob were watching the two of you make out until Coyote spoke up.
“Yeah buddy! Get your girl!” You and Jake broke apart in surprise.
“What the hell guys?!”

Sometimes, you liked to think of yourself as a dragon.  Dragons lived in caves (aka the library, in your case) and protected their hoard of gold (the books).  For the most part, you kept your inner dragon asleep, ready to pounce only when someone messed with your hoard.
So far, since moving to San Diego to live with your brother and starting work at the library on base, the dragon had been in hibernation.  So when the one person you didn’t expect woke the sleeping dragon, you were just as surprised as he was.
Tumblr media
“GOOD LORD.”  Your ears perked up at your fellow librarian’s exclamation.
Smiling, you slid your new bookmark into the book you had been reading.  Jake had given the bookmark to you, ‘just because’ he said, after finding out that The Mummy was your favorite movie.  One side had the quote “Hey, O’Connell!  Looks to me like I’ve got all the hor-ses!” and the other had “Hey Beni!  Looks to me like you’re on the wrong side of the ri-ver!” over black background.  It was simple but you absolutely loved it.  You loved him.
You took a deep breath and pushed thoughts of your naval aviator out of your head as you walked up to see Cass leaning on her desk with her forehead resting on her hands and grumbling.
“Are you okay?”
“No!”
“Um…why?”
“Look at this!”  She didn’t even lift her head, just pointed to a pile of Clive Cussler books and Spiderman comics.
“They look fine.”
“Open them!”  You picked up a copy of Cussler’s The Sea Wolves and flipped it open.  The pages fell open to a spot and that’s when you noticed it: the top right corner of the right page was folded down.  Someone had dog-eared multiple pages throughout.  You snapped the book shut and immediately went to another.  Book after book was full of dog-eared pages.  You picked up What If…Miles Morales and sure enough, more dog-eared pages.
“What in the-”
“Exactly!”  Cass lifted her head from the desk.  “I haven’t even checked which one of these flyboys returned these.  When I find out, I’m going to make sure their commander grounds them for a day or something because this is sacrilege!”
“Hey, don’t worry, okay?  I’ll take care of it”, you replied.  Cass looked up at you with relief in her eyes.
“Really?  You’d do this for me?”
“Of course!”  You grabbed a book cart sitting nearby and placed all the offending books on it.  “Go get your lunch and I’ll do this.”
Cass popped out of her chair and pulled you into a tight hug.
“Thanks for saving me from the Brig for punching a naval aviator.”
“Relax Cass, they wouldn’t have sent you to the Brig.”  She laughed and smiled before leaving to grab her things for lunch.
Your rolled the cart back to your office and sat down to scan the first book’s barcode.  You clicked on the record and then on LAST BORROWER.  The disappointed look on your face morphed into one of anger as you glared at the name on your screen:
Lt. Jake ‘Hangman’ Seresin
Cass was going to have to bail you out of the Brig.

Jake was in the air, running dog-fighting exercises with Phoenix and Bob against Maverick when he heard voices over the coms...and one sounded very familiar.
“Mickey, give me the thing.”
“Hermanita, what are you doing here?”  You must of had a Look on your face because Jake could hear the fear in Fanboy’s voice.
“Hondo said I could when I asked if I could come by because it was important.  Now, GIVE. ME. THE. THING.”  Jake smiled at your tone, letting out a small laugh…which was the absolute wrong thing to do, since Fanboy had remembered to let go of the button that allowed Jake's voice to come through coms.  He heard a crackling sound and then you.
“JAKE SERESIN.  I WOULDN’T BE LAUGHING IF I WERE YOU.”
“Um, h-hey sweetheart.”
“Don’t you ‘sweetheart’ me, Seresin.”  Jake could hear the others laughing quietly in the background.  He even heard Mav, Phoenix, and Bob all let out an ‘ooooh’.
“What’s up?” he asked, audibly swallowing.
“I saw the books you returned today.”  Jake wracked his brain, thinking over the books he’d returned.  He couldn’t think of anything that happened to them, but maybe he just didn't notice?
“Did I spill somethin’ on ‘em darlin’?  I’ll pay for it as soon-”
“No.”  He heard you let out a ‘hmph’.  “And don’t try to butter me up with darlin’ either!”
“Dewey, what is goin’ on?”
“Jake, what is one of my biggest pet peeves when it comes to books?”  He knew it, he really did.  Except, in that very moment, it evaporated out of his brain.
“Um…I know, I swear I do.”
“Mickey!  What is my pet peeve?”  Jake heard Fanboy clear his throat.
“Dog-eared pages.  When it’s someone’s own book, you don’t really care because it’s theirs and they can do what they want.  But if it’s a library book, or one of yours, well…”  That’s when Jake remembered.
“Oh no.”
“Oh no is right…sweetheart.”
“You’re in trouble Bagman!”
“Shut up Mickey.”
“Sorry hermanita.”
“Jake?”
“Yeah, baby?”
“I’ll see you tonight.”
He heard a door slam shut, signaling that you had left the room before the others were teasing Jake with another drawn out ‘oooooooh!’.
Jake felt himself start to break out in a sweat.  He gulped before clearing his throat and called out to Maverick.
“Hey, Mav?”
“Yeah, Hangman?”
“Remind me, how long does the gas last in these new FA-18s?”

A/N 2: Do I know this is a ridiculous way to react to something so simple, like dog eared pages in a book? Yes. Do I care? Not in the least. This was written for fun, so read it with that in mind.
Don't forget to leave a comment and reblog! It would be much appreciated!
A/N 3: And many many many thanks to the one and only @notroosterbradshaw. You know why.

Tumblr media
Pairing: Jake 'Hangman' Seresin x plus size!reader, Jake 'Hangman' Seresin x librarian!reader, Jake 'Hangman' Seresin x Garcia!reader, Jake 'Hangman' Seresin x latina!reader
Word Count: 4719
A/N: This was written for @roosterforme's Love Is In the Air challenge. The song I chose was John Legend's romantic hit, All of Me; it's what inspired the title! Thanks once again to the incomparable, amazing, sweet @jobean12-blog for her help beta-ing and letting me bounce ideas off her when I'd get stuck.
Trigger Warnings: Bob has an accident that isn't described. Jake has an accident that is described. Depressed Jake. Negative feelings of self-worth. I know absolutely nothing about comas because I am not a doctor.

You didn’t think you’d be back here so soon.  The pale cream walls of BMC MCAS Miramar taunted you as you made your way down the hall.  Everyone had just been here a few weeks before when Bob had been recovering from a training accident.  You weren’t privy to the details of said accident, but all you knew was that Jake was directly at fault.
And even though Bob forgave Jake, the guilt was absolutely crushing him.
Tumblr media
You hadn’t been to see Bob in the first couple of days after the accident because you knew he was going to feel overwhelmed with the squad, Mav, Penny, and quite a few others checking on him.  You sent a ‘Get Well’ gift with Mickey and you texted with him regularly.  When you finally went to go see him, you heard Jake’s raised voice.
“How can you say that to me Bob?” Jake snapped.  “How can you forgive me for that stupid mistake when it almost cost you your life?”
“Jake, did you do it on purpose?  Did you do that with the express purpose of killing me?” Bob asked quietly.  You could hear Jake stammering, like he was so appalled that Bob would ask him that and he just couldn’t form an answer.
“Hell no.  Of course not!” he cried.  “I may act like an asshole, and tease you like we were kids in school, but I’m not that guy.  You’re one of my favorite people, man.  Dewey loves you like you were another brother, and I love her, so…”
“Then why shouldn’t I forgive you?”  Jake didn’t respond, so you made some noise to alert them you were heading their way.
You walked into Bob’s hospital room with a smile and went to greet him first.
“Hey Bobbers, how are you feeling?”
“I’m getting there.”
“Good.”  You gave him a kiss on the temple and turned to see an expressionless look on Jake’s face.  You pulled him into a hug, which he seemed less than enthusiastic to return. “Jake?”
Jake wouldn’t look at you.  His eyes focused on the floor.
“I, uh…I’m gonna go now.”
“But J-”  He swept out of Bob’s hospital room without so much as a ‘goodbye’ to either of you.  You were staring at the doorway your boyfriend had just walked out of when you heard your name being called, your real name.  You went and took a seat at Bob’s bedside.
“He’s just beating himself up over what happened.  Jake’s one of the best–don’t you ever tell him I said that–and so when he messed up, and someone got hurt, it threw him for a loop.”
“I just wish I knew how to help him.”
“Just give him time Dewey.”
Tumblr media
You gave him time.  Everyone did.  Bob was released several days later, and Jake wouldn’t look him in the eye when Bob (once again) told him that he forgave him.
“I mean it Jake”, Bob said.  “You don’t need to hold this over yourself.  You didn’t do it on purpose.  I forgive you.”
“You shouldn’t.”  Jake picked up his things and turned back towards him.  “You shouldn’t forgive me.  I ruin every good thing I touch.”
That’s the day it started…at least, that’s what Bob and the others told you.  Jake started to be more reckless with his flying.  Jake was no longer dripping in confidence to which everyone was accustomed.  Mickey would tell you that he appeared to lose his confidence, in his abilities to be the best and just about everything else.
You saw it too, if you were lucky to see him. When you did see him, he barely held you; at first it was just holding your hand and kisses at the corner of your mouth.  It eventually whittled down to no touches or kisses at all.  He barely acknowledged you, except for saying ‘Hey’ when he noticed you were around.  You knew what was happening: he was pulling away.
You did everything you could to show him that despite his mistake, you still loved him and you always would.  Jake wouldn’t accept that, however, so you decided not to push anymore.  You’d be there when he was ready, but you wouldn’t push because you knew that would only drive him farther away.
Tumblr media
You stood in the doorway of Room 2188, watching the gentle rise and fall of Jake’s chest.  His sister, Lauren (Jesse and Isla’s mom), was sitting with him
“You know, Jake, the girls miss you.  They keep asking when they can see Uncle Jake.”  She sniffled a little before continuing.  “So I’m going to need you to wake up.  For them, for me, for Leslie, for Coyote and all your other friends…but especially for your girl.  I know you love her and she loves you.  You miss him somethin’ awful, don’t ya, Dewey?”
You hadn’t realized she knew you were there.
“Very much”, you replied.  Lauren stood as you walked over and hugged her.  “Any change?”
“None.”  You could see she was tired.  She’d spent the entire night at the hospital since you weren’t allowed to.  You and Jake weren’t married so you weren’t ‘family’.
“Go get some rest.  Get you a shower and something to eat.  The girls are probably tired of Rooster and Coyote.  I’ll let you know if anything changes.”
“I think it’s more the other way around to be honest.”  She gave you a big hug before gathering her things to leave.  “Thanks Dewey.  We’ll get our Jake back soon.”
“I hope so.”  Lauren shut the door as she left.  You leaned forward and kissed Jake’s hair since his face had several bruises that you didn’t want to aggravate.  You sat down in the chair Lauren had been occupying and reached forward for Jake’s hand.  You made sure to avoid touching his side, where he was still healing from being impaled by a piece of debris (he had been lucky because the piece of jagged metal had missed major organs).
Before you could speak, there was a knock at the door and Dr. Bast stepped in.
“Hello Miss Garcia.  How’s our favorite librarian today?”  The doctor’s English accent was soothing and helped calm your nerves.
“Ok as I can be Doc.”
“That is quite understandable.”  Dr. Bast picked up Jake’s chart and started reading over the notes made by the night nurses.
“So, any theories as to why he hasn’t woken up yet?” you asked.
“Unfortunately not.  While he has no swelling in his brain, he did get thrown against the ground harder than we would like, so that’s what caused the traumatic brain injury, therefore the coma.  It could’ve been worse, had he not been wearing a helmet.”
You looked back at Jake, and brushed the hair from his forehead.  “I need you to come back to me cowboy, okay?  Please.”
“Don’t worry Miss Garcia, your lieutenant will be alright, even if I can’t tell you when.  He’s improving each day.”  Dr. Bast smiled at you from the other side of Jake’s hospital bed.  “Just keep talking to him, he’ll hear you.”
“I always thought that was a myth.”
“Patients may not hear every single thing, but they still hear you.  Anyways, I’ve also got a surprise for you: You’re being allowed overnight stays with Lt. Seresin.”
Your head whips around to the doctor.
“Really?”  He nods and you shoot out of your seat to pull him into a hug.  “Thanks so much Dr. Bast, I really appreciate it.”
“It was nothing.  Now, I’ll leave you to it.  We’ll be back to check on him later.”
You resume your post next to Jake’s bed once again, but you suddenly couldn’t stand the quiet, so you switched on the tv and were deep in commentary about a movie you were watching on Netflix called Set It Up (“You know, if you look real close at when Charlie and Harper are having pizza, you can see the exact moment he falls in love with her, I swear!”) when there was a knock at the door and your brother and Reuben stepped in.
“Hey hermanita.”
“Little Garcia.”
You stood and both men gave you almost bone-crushing hugs and pulled up chairs.
“Thanks for visiting guys.”
“Of course.  We needed to see how Jake was doing”, replied Mickey.  He took a deep breath before continuing.  “But we also came because we wanted to talk to you.”
“Fanboy, maybe we shouldn’t–”
“She needs to know man”, Mickey said, cutting off his pilot.
“But–”
“Guys!  What are you talking about?  What do I need to know?” you asked as you looked at your brother and Reuben.
“About the conversation we had with Jake the day of his accident.”
“What did he say Mickey?”
“You have to understand, he felt like shit after what happened to Bob.  All of us could see he’d lost confidence in himself and he wasn’t flying like we all know he should’ve been…”
Tumblr media
“You need to get out of your head Hangman, or you’re going to make my sister a widow before you can make her a wife.”
Jake felt the hurt of that comment in his spine.  It had been so long since Fanboy, or anyone for that matter, had said his callsign with such disdain, so it only piled on the hatred Jake was already feeling for himself.  It also didn’t help that he’d taken Fanboy to lunch to ask for his blessing to propose to Dewey a few days before Bob’s accident.
“Well, maybe she’d be better off without me.  I was the reason her best friend got hurt, and he could’ve died”, Jake said.  No one had ever heard him sound so defeated.  “Besides, I know you never liked me for her…”  Fanboy sighs.
“Jake…man, that’s not what I sa–”  Jake cuts him off.
“You thought it though.”  Fanboy was getting increasingly worried as the conversation continued.  “Maybe I should just go.  I’m probably only going to fuck up her life.”
“Jake.”
Before Jake could reply, he heard a horrible sound coming from his jet’s engines and alarms began going off in the cockpit.  He heard Payback and Fanboy calling out to him.
“Hangman, what’s going on?!”
“Is it a bird strike?” he heard Fanboy call out over coms.
“No, there’s something wrong with the engines!”  Suddenly he heard another grinding sound and then his left wing was on fire.
“Hangman!  Eject!” Maverick’s panicked voice came through his headset.  “Eject!”
“Extinguishing left engine!”  Jake went through the process of trying to quell the fire in the engine, when an alarm went off signaling the failure of his right engine.  “Damn it!  Extinguishing right engine!”
“HANGMAN!  EJECT NOW!”  Memories of the day of Phoenix and Bob’s crash years before played through Jake’s mind as Maverick screamed at him.  He tried starting the engines once more, if only to gain a bit more altitude so he could eject safely.  That did the same as it had when Phoenix tried it and it sent Jake’s Super Hornet spiraling.
Jake pulled the ejection handle and flew upwards as his jet made impact and exploded, sending debris flying at him.  He cried out in pain as he looked down to see a piece of metal sticking out of the left side of his abdomen.
And because luck was not on his side, a gust of wind sent him careening towards the ground.  The impact was enough to knock him completely out and as the darkness crept into his vision, his last thought was of you.
Tumblr media
“...and if that hadn’t happened, he probably wouldn’t be in a coma”, Mickey said.  You had tears streaming down your face by the time Mickey finished (an abridged version) of his story.  Your brother and Reuben pulled you into a group hug.
“I’m sorry Little Garcia”, Reuben said.  “I know he’s going to be okay.  He’ll be back to normal, showin’ us all up in no time.”
“I hope so Reuben”, you replied.  “Thank you for telling me.”
“No problem hermanita.”
Mickey and Reuben stayed a couple more hours, eventually leaving only because they had training to get to.
Eventually, Dr. Bast returned to do his nightly check on Jake, so you went down to the cafeteria to pick something up for your dinner.
The doctor was gone by the time you got back, so you settled in the chair and flipped the tv on just so you had something on in the background.  After dinner, Bob and Phoenix stopped by for a quick visit after training and dropped off a small bag of your things that Mickey had put together for you.
After your best friend and his pilot left, you decided to get ready for bed.  After Mickey’s story earlier, you felt emotionally drained.  It was when you were about to start your face care routine that you got an idea.  You put on your headband and grabbed the extra and left the bathroom to see Jake.
“I’ve decided that we’re going to have a spa night cowboy.  Now, I know you hate my cat ear headband, but you’re unconscious so you have no say.  Got to keep all that glorious hair out of the way you know.”
You slipped it on and then went to the bathroom to do your cleanser.  After patting your face dry, you grabbed a package of face wipes, moisturizer, and a jar of eye masks and placed them on the small hospital bed table.
Before you began anything, you opened Spotify on your phone and pulled up your Liked Songs playlist and tapped play.  The soothing tones of Henry James’ It’s Been A Long, Long Time started flowing from the speaker (it being the song that played on your drive to the hospital).  After setting aside the phone, you popped open the package of face wipes and carefully wiped his face clean.
Henry James segued into John Legend’s All of Me, one of your favorite romantic songs.  You started singing along quietly as you twisted open the jar of eye masks, and carefully place one sparkly patch under Jake’s right eye.
'Cause all of me
Loves all of you
Love your curves and all your edges
All your perfect imperfections
Give your all to me
I'll give my all to you
You're my end and my beginning
Even when I lose, I'm winning
After you put down the patch under Jake’s left eye, you put the eye masks on yourself, sat down next to Jake, and put your hand in his.  You continued singing along, and it got to the last verse when you felt a squeeze.  The song was immediately paused and you turned to look at your pilot.
“Jake?  Sweetheart?”  His face showed no signs that he was waking, and his heart monitor was a steady beep.  Maybe I imagined it? you thought to yourself.  You were looking at your hands when you saw it happen.  It felt like the hundreds of movies you’d seen where the unconscious person heard something and they magically woke up.
So, you watched and waited.
Nothing happened.
Tumblr media
“Baby, can you turn it down?”
“Why does my face feel wet?”
“Where am I?”
“Dewey, why are you crying?  I can hear your crying.”
“Wait…why can’t I move?  Why can’t I open my eyes?”
“WHAT IS GOING ON?!”
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, you were not privy to Jake’s inner turmoil.  You didn’t hear him calling out for you as you pulled the headband and eye masks off his face, tossed them into the trash can, pressed the call button.
It was a few minutes later when you heard a knock and Jake’s night nurse (who’d introduced herself earlier), Nurse Jo, stepped in.
“Everything okay, love?”
“Uh…um, he squeezed my hand.”
“Now, are you su–”
“I know what I felt and what I saw.  He squeezed my hand.  Twice.”
“I’ll page Dr. Bast.”  She noted your shining eyes and came over and placed a calming hand on your back.  “Don’t worry, love.  He’s going to be okay.  If anything, this was an indication that he might be coming out of the coma.”
“I hope so.”
You texted Lauren to update her on what was going on with Jake, because you needed her to know immediately.  You had just put away your phone when Dr. Bas came in.
“Jo, what have we got?”
“Miss Garcia informed me that Lt. Seresin squeezed her hand twice.”
“Are you s–”
“100%.”  You cut him off.  “I saw it happen.”  The doctor looked Jake over some more, before he typed up his notes in Jake’s file.
“I cannot, with absolute certainty, tell you why he squeezed your hand.  It could be random muscle spasms, it could be something worse.  However, it could also mean that he’ll be waking up soon.  I’m hoping it’s that.  For now, I’ll have the nurses increase their checks on him, as well as I’ll come a few extra times each day if my schedule permits.”
“Thank you so much.”
“I will caution you, however.  When he wakes up, it usually comes in stages.  This isn’t like the movies where he’ll open his eyes and automatically remember what happened, who you are or who he is.  He’ll most likely be suffering from post-traumatic amnesia, which would account for his potential memory loss and he could also become restless and agitated.  So it’s best to not take a lot of what he says in the first hours or days to heart, it’s just his brain rebooting.”
“Will he remember all that?  The time right after he wakes up?”
“I couldn’t tell you for certain.  It’s different with every person.  But also, none of what he says, if he even does, is one of those ‘this is how feels deep down in his subconscious’ type of things.  Like I said, don’t take any of it seriously.”
You looked over at Jake and ran your hand through his messy hair.
“Is there anything else I need to keep an eye out for?” you asked without looking back over at Dr. Bast.
He explained a few more things before he and Nurse Jo left the room.  You called Lauren and let her know everything the doctor had told you.  After you finished the call, you put on Spotify again (on random), and by some weird chance, ‘All of Me’ started playing again.
You smiled as you set a sleep timer and grabbed a pillow and blanket to get comfy in your chair for the night.
Tumblr media
Lauren arrived the next morning, just in case.
Jake showed no other signs of waking up.
Tumblr media
The next day was almost the same.  Except that Bob, Rooster, and Coyote came to visit and Lauren told them what Dr. Bast had told you.  At first, everything was normal.  But when Rooster started talking, Jake squeezed your hand.  You failed to connect the two incidents and didn’t mention it.
Coyote took over the conversation, then Lauren said something that caused Rooster to chime in and Jake did it again.  The more Rooster spoke, you finally started putting it together.  The group realized something was going on when they realized you weren’t even paying attention to the conversation.
“What’s going on?”  Lauren gave you a questioning look.
“Everytime Rooster talked, Jake squeezed my hand.”
“Ha.  Even out cold, Bagman can’t get enough of me”, Rooster said with a smile.  It had been a while since Jake and Rooster would consider themselves rivals, and thought of each other as the brother neither ever had.
But Jake didn’t squeeze your hand when Rooster spoke that time, instead he–
“Uggggh.”
It was almost comical the way everyone stopped talking and snapped their heads towards Jake.  When he made no sounds, you looked at Rooster and motioned for him to talk some more.
“Uh…I never told you this Jake, but when you saved Mav and me, I almost cried.  I went to visit my parents after we got back and I told th–”
“Ch…”
“You’re a good man Jake, and one of the best wingmen I could ask for…”
“Chick…”
“So we need you to wake up, okay brother?”
“Chicken.”
“Really?!”
Tumblr media
Still, Jake didn’t wake up that day.  Everyone (but you and Lauren) left when Dr. Bast arrived.  They took Jake for tests and when they brought him back, told you two that he was showing amazing improvement.  Lauren switched out with you that night so you could go home for rest, but you didn’t really get any.  You were so worried he’d wake up and you wouldn’t be there.
When you arrived the next morning, you found Lauren and Dr. Bast in the hallway, both looked worried.
“--completely normal for him to not remember anything.  He’s suffering from Post-Traumatic Amnesia.  His head injury wasn’t too severe, so I don’t think it’ll last a significant amount of time.”
“He woke up?”  They both turned to look at you and Lauren rushed over.
“About 15 minutes ago.  I knew you’d already be on your way, and he needed to be looked over, so that’s why I didn’t call you.”
“No worries at all.”  You hugged her tight.  “How is he?”
“It appears that Lt. Seresin only remembers being in the Navy and being from Texas.”
“Can I see him?” you ask in a small voice.  Lauren nodded and Dr. Bast led you into the room.
“Lt. Seresin?”
“Yeah, doc?”  You felt your heart swell.  It had been so long since you’d heard that Texan drawl.
“Are you okay to receive another visitor?”
“‘Course doc.”  His accent was thicker than you had ever heard before.
“This is Miss Garcia, your–”
“--friend.”  You didn’t want to overwhelm Jake so soon. "We're friends."
“Well, I’ll leave the two of you to it.”
“Like I said, I’m a friend of yours”, you said and took a seat near the bed, but not super close.  Jake’s eyes looked you over closely, making you want to shrink in on yourself.  You couldn’t help looking him over just in the same way: his hair looked a little shaggier and he had a decent beard going on.
“How are we friends?”
“My brother is in your squad.  His name is Mickey, Mickey Garcia.  Callsign Fanboy.”  Jake looked away for a minute, as if he searched his mental files for that name.
“Does he like Star Trek?”
“Yes!  Yes. Loves it.  I like to call it his one flaw, because I love–”
“Star Wars.”  Jake was still staring off into space.  “Your voice sounds familiar.”
“Well, we have known each other for a year or two now…”
“What’s your name?”  He smiled when you told him.
“But Reuben–his callsign is Payback…he’s a member of your squad too, and Mickey’s pilot–he likes to call me Little Garcia sometimes.  I still don’t get why.  I’m not younger than Mickey and I’m certainly not littler than he is–”
“You’re gorgeous.”
“Oh.”  You felt the heat creep up your neck and settle in your cheeks.  “Um, thank you.  You, uh, you don’t have to say that though.”
“I mean it.”
Tumblr media
It went like that for a couple days, but you weren’t at the hospital as often as you were when he was unconscious.  You told yourself it was so he could recover without having so many people around him, just Lauren to help him along.
But in truth, you stayed away because you were worried; worried that he wouldn’t remember you or everyone but you and the relationship you two shared.  You always thought it was like a dream, a man like Jake wanting to be with someone like you…even after all this time.  Lauren would message you several times a day, telling you that Jake was asking for Little Garcia.  You made excuses that you were busy at work since you’d been gone for a bit after what happened to Jake. You knew you had chosen the wrong time to distance yourself, but you couldn’t help thinking What if, when he remembered everything, he realized he didn’t want to be with you anymore? or worse, What if he blamed you for the accident?  The rational part of your brain was screaming at you that you were so very wrong…but you just couldn’t hear it.
Tumblr media
Around four days after Jake woke up, you planned on finally going back to visit him after work, and went so far as shooting Lauren a quick text letting her know and set about working on shelf reading (aka organizing and straightening) the graphic novel section.
You were up on a step stool, when you heard what sounded like a group come in downstairs.  You thought about going down to see if Cas needed help, but decided against it; she’d call if she needed you.  Hoping the footsteps that signaled someone was coming upstairs were planning to avoid the section you were working in, you continued your organization.
You were zoned out as you worked so you were beyond surprised when you felt hands at your waist.  You let out a yelp as you were falling preparing for the pain of a fall that never came.  There was something about the arms around you, so as soon as you felt calm enough, your eyes snapped open.
“Jake?”  He helped you stand comfortably and scooted away from you.  “Oh my God, what are you doing here?  How are you feeling?”
“They let me out, and I’m feeling way better”, he replied.  “I’m not 100%, but I’m getting there.”
“Good!  I’m so glad.”
“Where have you been?  I’ve been waiting to see you Dewey.”
“I’ve been b- - Wait.  You called me Dewey.”
“I did.”
“That means- -”
“Yup.  I remember everything darlin’.”
“Oh.”
“Yeah, oh.”
“I’m s- -”
“Do you not love me anymore?” he asked.  “Is it because of the accident that hurt Bob?  D-do you have feelings for Bob?”
“No! No, Bob is my best friend.  I love him the way I love Mickey, he’s another brother to me. You know that.”
“Then what is it?”
“I love you more than everything.  I was just so scared that you’d never remember me or you’d wake up and realize your accident was my fault.”
“Sweetheart, my accident was a simple malfunction.  It happens  sometimes.”
“I was so scared, so so scared, that I was going to lose you.”
“I won’t lie to you and say that will never happen, because nothing is ever certain in this job.”
“I know.”  Jake smiled at you and took your hands in his, leading you over to the balcony overlooking the library’s main floor.  You gasped upon seeing all of the Dagger Squad, Penny, Amelia, Lauren, Cas, and even Nurse Jo and Dr. Bast gathered together.  Every one of them was holding a bouquet of your favorite flowers in your favorite color, smiling up at the two of you.
“Fanboy?”
“I know I’ve already given it, but yes, you have my blessing…and our parents’ too.”  You turned to look at Jake so fast, you swore you heard a cracking sound.
“Oh my God.  Oh my God. You’re- -”
“I am”, Jake answered with a smile and got down on one knee.  He reached into the pocket of his jeans and pulled out the most beautiful ring you’d ever seen.  “This belonged to Nana Seresin.  Our grandpa gave it to her back in the day when he proposed and said it was going to be handed down to me when I met the love of my life.  I went to visit Nana after that Halloween carnival.  You remember the one?”
“Mmhmm.”  You were completely incapable of words in that moment.
“I knew then, that one day, I was going to marry you.”  You were crying in earnest now.  “When I first woke up, and I couldn’t remember anything, I just knew there was something I was missing.  So I’m just going to keep it simple.  Miss Garcia, Dewey…Will you marry me?”
“You know how much I love quoting my favorite things…”
“Yeah…?”
“So, before I give you my answer, I’m going to use the words of a woman much wiser than me: ‘The only thing I ask is that you outlive me so I never have to live another day without you'.” **
“Is that a yes, baby?”
“Yes Jake, I’ll marry you.”  He slid the ring onto your finger and stood up, pulled you into his arms and kissed you.
The two of you pulled apart to everyone’s cheers.
“I love you so much Jake.”
“I love you too sweetheart.”
